We study the phase diagram of spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions decaying with a power-law $\propto r^{-α}$ ($α\ge 1$) accompanied by modulated single-ion anisotropy. Employing the techniques of the density-matrix renormalization group, effects of long-range interactions and single-ion anisotropy on a variety of correlations are investigated. In order to check the consistency, the fidelity susceptibilities are evaluated across quantum phase transitions. The quantum critical points are faithfully detected and orders of phase transitions are determined. The correlation-length critical exponent is extracted from scaling functions of the fidelity susceptibility. The presence of long-range interactions leads to quantitative change of the phase boundaries and reduces the order of phase transition under certain conditions. A direct first-order transition between the periodic Néel phase and the large-$D$ phase occurs for slowly decaying antiferromagnetic interactions.
We present a 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy study of the two incommensurate magnetic phases in the multiferroic material FeVO4. We devise lineshapes appropriate for planar elliptical and collinear modulated magnetic structures and show that they reproduce very well the Mössbauer spectra in FeVO4, in full qualitative agreement with a previous neutron diffraction study. Quantitatively, our spectra provide precise determinations of the characteristics of the elliptical and modulated structures which are in good agreement with the neutron diffraction results. We find that the hyperfine field elliptic…
We present magnetic and transport properties of PrRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ single crystals which exhibit antiferromagnetic order below T$_{N}$ = 68 K. Well defined anomalies due to magnetic phase transition are observed in magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and specific heat data. The T$_{N}$ of 68 K for PrRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ is much higher than 5.4 K expected on the basis of de-Gennes scaling. The magnetic susceptibility data reveal strong uniaxial anisotropy in this compound similar to that of PrCo$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. With increasing pressure T$_{N}$ increases monotonically up to T$_N$ = 71.5 K at 22.5 k…
In RBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} compounds (R is rare earth), a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition is accompanied by a giant magnetoresistance. We study the magnetization of detwinned GdBaCo_{2}O_{5.5} single crystals, and find a remarkable uniaxial anisotropy of Co^{3+} spins which is tightly linked with the chain oxygen ordering in GdO_{0.5} planes. Reflecting the underlying oxygen order, CoO_2 planes also develop a spin-state order consisting of Co^{3+} ions in alternating rows of S=1 and S=0 states. The magnetic structure appears to be composed of weakly coupled ferromagnetic ladders with Isin…
Implementation of antiferromagnetic compounds as active elements in spintronics has been hindered by their insensitive nature against external perturbations which causes difficulties in switching among different antiferromagnetic spin configurations. Electrically-controllable strain gradient can become a key parameter to tune the antiferromagnetic states of multiferroic materials. We have discovered a correlation between an electrically-written straight-stripe mixed-phase boundary and an in-plane antiferromagnetic spin axis in highly-elongated La-5%-doped BiFeO$_{3}$ thin films by performing p…
The field-induced transition in one-dimensional S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is obtained on the basis of the Schwinger boson mean-field theory. The behaviors of the specific heat and susceptibility as functions of temperature as well as the applied transverse field are explored, which are found to be different from the results obtained under a longitudinal field. The anomalies of the specific heat at low temperatures, which might be an indicative of a field-induced transition from a Luttinger liquid phase to an ordered…
We analyze and compare the effect of spatial and spin anisotropy on spin conductivity in a two dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg quantum magnet on a square lattice. We explore the model in both the Neel antiferromagnetic (AF) phase and the collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase. We find that in contrast to the effects of spin anisotropy in the Heisenberg model, spatial anisotropy in the AF phase does not suppress the zero temperature regular part of the spin conductivity in the zero frequency limit - rather it enhances it. We also explore the finite temperature effects on the Drude weight in the A…
Magnetism and superconductivity are physical phenomena whose foundations are rooted in quantum mechanics and whose technological applications do not cease to surprise us. In this article we describe a class of magnetic materials, we call modulated antiferromagnetic systems (MAS), that has a prominent representative in the copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors. The class, however, is not exclusive to these superconductors. Indeed, several materials that belong to that class are insulators. The magnetic spectral weight of MAS displays the following universal properties: a local intensity…
Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) of BaCu2Si2O7 and a microscopic theory of the magnetic anisotropy of spin 1/2 chain compounds with folded CuO3 geometry being in good agreement with the available data are presented. The AFMR studies at 4.2 K show the existence of two gaps (40 and 76 GHz) at zero magnetic field and of two spin re-orientation transitions for H||c. The microscopic origin of the two gaps is shown to be Hund's rule coupling which leads to a "residual anisotropy" beyond the compensation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term by the symmetric anisotropy which would be valid without Hund…
Pronounced anisotropy of magnetic properties and complex magnetic order of a new oxi-halide compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6 has been investigated by powder and single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization and ac susceptibility techniques. Anisotropy of susceptibility extends far into the paramagnetic temperature range. A principal source of anisotropy are anisotropic properties of the involved octahedrally coordinated single Co(2+) ions, as confirmed by angular-overlap-model calculations presented in this work. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order sets in at TN=34 K. Propagation vector is strong…
A central prospect of antiferromagnetic spintronics is to exploit magnetic properties that are unavailable with ferromagnets. However, this poses the challenge of accessing such properties for readout and control. To this end, light-induced manipulation of the transient ground state, e.g. by changing the magnetic anisotropy potential, opens promising pathways towards ultrafast deterministic control of antiferromagnetism. Here, we use this approach to trigger a $\it{coherent}$ rotation of the entire long-range antiferromagnetic spin arrangement about a crystalline axis in $GdRh_2Si_2$ and demon…
Motivated by the experimentally observed $\sqrt{5} \times \sqrt{5}$ iron vacancy order and a block spin antiferromagnetic phase with large magnetic moment in $\mathrm{K}_{0.8}\mathrm{Fe}_{1.6}\mathrm{Se}_2$, we study the magnetic phase diagram of an extended $J_1-J_2$ model on a 1/5-depleted square lattice with $\sqrt{5} \times \sqrt{5}$ vacancy order, using a classical Monte Carlo analysis. The magnetic phase diagram involves various antiferromagnetically ordered phases, and most of them have higher order commensuration. We find that the experimentally relevant block-spin state occupies a sig…
We report the magnetic phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$PSe$_3$ which represents a random magnet system of two antiferromagnetic systems with mixed spin, mixed spin anisotropies, mixed nearest neighbor magnetic interactions and mixed periodicities in their respective antiferromagnetic structure. Bulk samples of Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$PSe$_3$ have been prepared and characterized phase pure by powder X-ray and neutron diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. Nature and extent of magnetically ordered state has been established using powder neutron diffraction, dc magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity…
Ba$_{3}$NbFe$_{3}$Si$_{2}$O$_{14}$ (langasite) is structurally and magnetically single domain chiral with the magnetic helicity induced through competing symmetric exchange interactions. Using neutron scattering, we show that the spin-waves in antiferromagnetic langasite display directional anisotropy. On applying a time reversal symmetry breaking magnetic field along the $c$-axis, the spin wave energies differ when the sign is reversed for either the momentum transfer $\pm$ $\vec{Q}$ or applied magnetic field $\pm$ $μ_{0}$H. When the field is applied within the crystallographic $ab$-plane, th…
Electronic and magnetic properties of the heavily H-doped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ $(x\sim0.5 )$ were studied in the framework of the density functional theory combined with the dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). We found a stripe-like-ordered structure of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, as a ground state, with the same configuration as the antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The new configuration could explain the existing experimental results related to the heavily H-doped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$, such as an in-plane electronic anisotropy and a non-uniform magnetic behavior. A significant anisotropy was …
We present the first experimental realization of an $S=2$ ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic (F-AF) alternating chain in a new Mn-verdazyl complex [Mn(hfac)$_2$]$\cdot$($o$-Py-V) [hfac=1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate; $o$-Py-V=3-(2-pyridyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl]. Through the $ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital calculation, magnetization, and ESR measurements, this compound is confirmed to form an $S=2$ F-AF alternating chain with Ising anisotropy below about 100 K. Furthermore, we find an anomalous change in magnetization at 1/4 of the saturation value, which is probably a manifestation of the …
We present a dynamical mean-field study of antiferromagnetic magnons in one-, two- and three-orbital Hubbard model of square and bcc cubic lattice at intermediate coupling strength. Weinvestigate the effect of anisotropy introduced by an external magnetic field or single-ion anisotropy. For the latter we tune continuously between the easy-axis and easy-plane models. We also analyzea model with spin-orbit coupling in cubic site-symmetry setting. The ordered states as well as themagnetic excitations are sensitive to even a small breaking ofSU(2)symmetry of the model andfollow the expectations of …
Quasi-one-dimensional magnet NiCl$_2\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, usually abbreviated as DTN, does not order at zero field down to $T=0$: due to the strong single-ion anisotropy of the "easy plane" type acting on $S=1$ Ni$^{2+}$ ions, the $S_z=0$ ground state is separated from $S_z=\pm 1$ excitations by an energy gap. Once the magnetic field is applied along the main anisotropy axis, the gap closes at $B_{c1}=2.18$ T and the field-induced antiferromagnetic order arises. The low-energy excitations spectrum of this field-induced ordered state includes two branches of excitations, one of them have to be…
Soft x-ray absorption experiments on the transition metal L2,3 edge of multiferroic MnWO4 and antiferromagnetic CoWO4 are presented. The observed linear polarization dependence, analyzed by full-multiplet calculations, is used to determine the ground state wave function of the magnetic Mn2+ and Co2+ ions. The impact of the local structure and the spin-orbit coupling on the orbital moment is discussed in terms of the single-ion anisotropy. It is shown that the orbital moment in CoWO4 is responsible for the collinear antiferromagnetism, while the small size of spin-orbit coupling effects make sp…
We study the dynamical spin excitations of the one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and stochastic analytic continuation of imaginary-time correlation function. Using the transverse dynamic spin structure factor, we observe the quantum phase transition with a critical point between the topological Haldane gapped phase and the trivial phase. At the quantum critical point, we find a broad continuum characterized by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid similar to a $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. We furth…
We consider the effective 2+1 dimensional electrodynamics (QED_3) of low-energy quasiparticles coupled to fluctuating vortex loops in the d-wave superconductor, with the velocity anisotropy: v_F not equal to v_Delta. This theory should be relevant to the quantum superconductor-insulator transition in underdoped cuprates. Working in the customary large-N approximation, we find that weak anisotropy is a marginally irrelevant perturbation to the Lorentz invariant QED_3, and that the critical number N_c of Dirac fields below which the theory suffers the antiferromagnetic (chiral) instability stays…
The bicollinear antiferromagnetic order experimentally observed in FeTe is shown to be stabilized by the coupling $\tilde g_{12}$ between monoclinic lattice distortions and the spin-nematic order parameter with $B_{\rm 2g}$ symmetry, within a three-orbital spin-fermion model studied with Monte Carlo techniques. A finite but small value of $\tilde g_{12}$ is required, with a concomitant lattice distortion compatible with experiments, and a tetragonal-monoclinic transition strongly first order. Remarkably, the bicollinear state found here displays a planar resistivity with the "reversed" puzzlin…
We study the ground-state magnetic phase diagram of a spin S=1/2 antiferromagnetic two-leg ladder in the presence of period two lattice units modulated, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction along the legs. We consider the case of collinear DM vectors and strong rung exchange and magnetic field. In this limit we map the initial ladder model onto the effective spin $σ=1/2$ XXZ chain and study the latter using the continuum-limit bosonization approach. We identified four quantum phase transitions and corresponding critical magnetic fields, which mark transitions from the spin gapped regimes int…
The central issue in high-temperature cuprate superconductors is the pseudogap state appearing below the pseudogap temperature $T^*$, which is well above the superconducting transition temperature. In this study, we theoretically investigate the rapid increase of the magnetic anisotropy below the pseudogap temperature detected by the recent torque-magnetometry measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ [Y. Sato et al., Nat. Phys., 13, 1074 (2017)]. Applying the spin Green's function formalism including the Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction arising from the buckling of the CuO$_2$ plane, we obtain res…
The anisotropy of magnetic properties commonly is introduced in textbooks using the case of an antiferromagnetic system with Ising type anisotropy. This model presents huge anisotropic magnetization and a pronounced metamagnetic transition and is well-known and well-documented both, in experiments and theory. In contrast, the case of an antiferromagnetic $X$-$Y$ system with weak in-plane anisotropy is only poorly documented. We studied the anisotropic magnetization of the compound GdRh$_2$Si$_2$ and found that it is a perfect model system for such a weak-anisotropy setting because the Gd$^{3+}…
The ground state magnetization process of the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain with the easy-axis single-ion anisotropy described by negative $D$ is investigated. It is numerically found that a phase transition between two different gapless phases occurs at an intermediate magnetic field between the starting and saturation points of the magnetization for $-1.49<D<-0.35$. The transition is similar to the spin flopping, but it is second-order and not accompanied with any significant anomalous behaviors in the magnetization curve. We also present the phase diagrams in the m-D and H-D planes which reve…
We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the unusual ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional copper-iridium oxide Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$. Utilizing Ir $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we reveal a large gap magnetic excitation spectrum. We find that it is caused by an unusual exchange anisotropy generating mechanism, namely, strong ferromagnetic anisotropy arising from antiferromagnetic superexchange, driven by the alternating strong and weak spin-orbit coupling on the $5d$ Ir and 3d Cu magnetic ions, respectively. From symmetry consideration, this novel mechanism is gen…
We investigate the magnetic symmetry of the topological antiferromagnetic material Mn$_3$Ge by using torque measurements. Below the Neel temperature, detailed angle-dependent torque measurements were performed on Mn$_3$Ge single crystals in directions parallel and perpendicular to the Kagome basal plane. The out-of plane torque data exhibit $\pm\sinθ$ and $\sin2θ$ behaviors, of which the former results from the spontaneous ferromagnetism within the basal plane and the latter from the in- and out-of-plane susceptibility anisotropy. The reversible component of the in-plane torque exhibits $\sin6…
The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic zig-zag ladder is studied by exact diagonalization of small systems in the regime of weak inter-chain coupling. A gapless phase with quasi long-range spiral correlations has been predicted to occur in this regime if easy-plane (XY) anisotropy is present. We find in general that the finite zig-zag ladder shows three phases: a gapless collinear phase, a dimer phase and a spiral phase. We study the level crossings of the spectrum, the dimer correlation function, the structure factor and the spin stiffness within these phases, as well as at the transition points. As t…
It has been proposed that Sr_2RuO_4 exhibits spin triplet superconductivity mediated by ferromagnetic fluctuations. So far neutron scattering experiments have failed to detect any clear evidence of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations but, instead, this type of experiments has been successful in confirming the existence of incommensurate spin fluctuations near q=(1/3 1/3 0). For this reason there have been many efforts to associate the contributions of such incommensurate fluctuations to the mechanism of its superconductivity. Our unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements revealed that …
We investigated the in-plane anisotropy on the resistivity and thermopower of the Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} (Bi-2212) and Bi-Sr-Co-O (BiCo) single crystals. In Bi-2212, the b-axis resistivity is higher than the a-axis resistivity, and is expressed as a sum of the a-axis resistivity and an additional residual resistivity. A downward deviation due to pseudogap is observed below a characteristic temperature T^*, which is isotropic in the form of conductivity. These results suggest that the modulation structure along the b-axis works as an anisotropic scattering center, but does not affect the pseudog…
We report on a spin-polarized inelastic neutron scattering study of spin waves in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of BaFe2As2. Three distinct excitation components are identified, with spins fluctuating along the c-axis, perpendicular to the ordering direction in the ab-plane, and parallel to the ordering direction. While the first two "transverse" components can be described by a linear spin-wave theory with magnetic anisotropy and inter-layer coupling, the third "longitudinal" component is generically incompatible with the local moment picture. It points towards a contribution of iti…
We present results of a study of the antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain, subject to the simultaneous presence of single-ion anisotropy and external magnetic fields. Using quantum Monte-Carlo based on the stochastic series expansion method we first uncover a rich quantum phase diagram comprising Néel, Haldane, Luttinger liquid, and large anisotropy phases. Second, we scan across this phase diagram over a wide range of parameters, evaluating the transverse dynamic structure factor, which we show to exhibit sharp massive modes, as well as multi particle continua. For vanishing anisotropy and fields, …
Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg integer-spin chains are characterized by a spin-liquid ground state with no long-range order, due to the relevance of quantum fluctuations. Spin anisotropy, however, freezes quantum fluctuations, and the system is magnetized in the presence of a sufficiently large easy-axis anisotropy. We numerically investigate the case S=1, by means of the density-matrix renormalization group, and find that the freezing of the spin liquid into a Néel spin solid, with increasing easy-axis anisotropy, is a continuous quantum phase transition. Numerical evidence indicates that the t…
We have explored the possibility to orient spins in antiferromagnetic thin films with low magnetocrystalline anisotropy via the exchange coupling to adjacent antiferromagnetic films with high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. We have used MnO as a prototype for a system with negligible single-ion anisotropy. We were able to control its spin direction very effectively by growing it as a film on antiferromagnetic CoO films with different predetermined spin orientations. This result may pave the way for tailoring antiferromagnets with low magnetocrystalline anistropy for applications in exchange bia…

We theoretically examine anisotropy of in-plane resistivity in the striped antiferromagnetic phase of an iron arsenide superconductor by applying a memory function approach to the ordered phase with isotropic nonmagnetic impurity. We find that the anisotropy of the scattering rate is independent of carrier density when the topology of the Fermi surface is changed after the introduction of holes. On the other hand, the anisotropy of the Drude weight monotonically decreases reflecting the distortion of the Dirac Fermi surface and eventually leads to the reverse of anisotropy of resistivity, bein…
We investigated the in-plane resistivity anisotropy for underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with improved quality. We demonstrate that the anisotropy in resistivity in the magnetostructural ordered phase arises from the anisotropy in the residual component which increases in proportion to the Co concentration $x$. This gives evidence that the anisotropy originates from the impurity scattering by Co atoms substituted for the Fe sites, rather than so far proposed mechanism such as the anisotropy of Fermi velocities of reconstructed Fermi surface pockets. As doping proceeds …
We use exact diagonalization and the modified Lanczos method to study the finite energy and finite momentum spectral weight of the longitudinal and transverse spin excitations of the anisotropic zig-zag ladder. We find that the spin excitations form continua of gapless or gapped spinons in the different regions of the phase diagram. The results obtained are consistent with a picture previously proposed that in the anisotropic case there is a transition from a gapped regime to a gapless regime, for small interchain coupling. In this regime we find a sharp low-energy peak in the structure functi…
We examine the magnetic phase diagram of iron pnictides using a five band model. For the intermediate values of the interaction expected to hold in the iron pnictides, we find a metallic low moment state characterized by antiparallel orbital magnetic moments. The anisotropy of the interorbital hopping amplitudes is the key to understanding this low moment state. This state accounts for the small magnetization measured in undoped iron pnictides and leads to the strong exchange anisotropy found in neutron experiments. Orbital ordering is concomitant with magnetism and produces the large zx orbit…
We study the breakdown of the magnetization plateau at the magnetization M=M_{S}/3 (M_{S} is the saturation magnetization) of the S=1/2 anisotropic spin chain with ferromagnetic-ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the model with the isotropic ferromagnetic (trimer) coupling J_{F}, and anisotropic antiferromagnetic coupling (J_{x}=J_{y}=J_{AF} and J_{z}=ΔJ_{AF}). For the limit of large γ\equiv J_{F}/J_{AF}, the model is equivalent to the S=3/2 XXZ chain with the exchange anisotropy Δ. There is a phase transition between the plateau (small-γ) and the no-plateau (large-γ) re…
We consider the one dimensional, periodic spin chain with $N$ sites, similar to the one studied by Haldane \cite{hal}, however in the opposite limit of very large anisotropy and small nearest neighbour, anti-ferromagnetic exchange coupling between the spins, which are of large magnitude $s$. For a chain with an even number of sites we show that actually the ground state is non degenerate and given by a superposition of the two Néel states, due to quantum spin tunnelling. With an odd number of sites, the Néel state must necessarily contain a soliton. The position of the soliton is arbitrary thu…
Electrical resistivity rho, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization M and specific heat measurements are reported on a singlecrystalline sample of CePd5Al2, showing successive antiferromagnetic orderings at T_N1=4.1 K and T_N2=2.9 K. The temperature dependence of T_N1 shows a Kondo metal behavior with large anisotropy, rho_c/rho_a=3.2 at 20 K, and opening of a superzone gap along the tetragona c-direction below T_N1. Both T_N1 and T_N2 gradually increase with applying pressure up to 2.5 GPa. The data of chi(T) and M(B) in the paramagnetic state were analyzed using a crystalline electric fie…
We systematically investigated the anisotropic in-plane resistivity of the iron telluride including three kinds of impurity atoms: excess Fe, Se substituted for Te, and Cu substituted for Fe. Sizable resistivity anisotropy was found in the magneto-structurally ordered phase whereas the sign is opposite ($ρ_a$ $>$ $ρ_b$, where the $b$-axis parameter is shorter than the $a$-axis one) to that observed in the transition-metal doped iron arsenides ($ρ_a$ $<$ $ρ_b$). On the other hand, our results demonstrate that the magnitude of the resistivity anisotropy in the iron tellurides is correlated with …
We present a novel ground state that explain the continuous modulated charge diagonal order recently observed in manganese oxides, at hole densities $x$ larger than one half. In this diagonal phase the charge is modulated with a predominant Fourier component inversely proportional to $1-x$. Magnetically this state consist of antiferromagnetic coupled zig-zag chains. For a wide range of relevant physical parameters as electron-phonon coupling, antiferromagnetic interaction between Mn ions and on-site Coulomb repulsion, the diagonal phase is the ground state of the system. The diagonal phase is …
We have studied anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) and magnetization with rotating magnetic field (B) within $CuO_2$ plane in lightly doped AF $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$. \emph{A giant anisotropy} in MR is observed at low temperature below 5 K. The c-axis resistivity can be tuned about one order of magnitude just by changing B direction within $CuO_2$ plane and a scaling behavior between out-of-plane and in-plane MR is found. A "Spin valve" effect is proposed to understand the giant anisotropy of out-of-plane MR and the evolution of scaling parameters with the external field. It is found that the f…
Low-temperature magnetic resonance study of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu(en)(H$_2$O)$_2$SO$_4$ (en = C$_2$H$_8$N$_2$) was performed down to 0.45~K. This compound orders antiferromagnetically at 0.9K. The analysis of the resonance data within the hydrodynamic approach allowed to identify anisotropy axes and to estimate the anisotropy parameters for the antiferromagnetic phase. Dipolar spin-spin coupling turns out to be the main contribution to the anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic phase. The splitting of the resonance modes and its non-monotonous dependency on the applied freq…
The magnetic response of antiferromagnetic CsO2, coming from the p-orbital S=1/2 spins of anionic O2- molecules, is followed by 133Cs nuclear magnetic resonance across the structural phase transition occuring at Ts1=61 K on cooling. Above Ts1, where spins form a square magnetic lattice, we observe a huge, nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the exchange coupling originating from thermal librations of O2- molecules. Below Ts1, where antiferromagnetic spin chains are formed as a result of p-orbital ordering, we observe a spin Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior of spin dynamics. These two inte…
We have studied the effect of anisotropies on the quantum phase transition of the Kondo necklace model in dimensions D=1, 2 and 3. Both the anisotropy $δ$ of the inter-site interaction term and anisotropy $Δ$ of the on-site Kondo interaction have been included. We use a bond operator method with constraints implemented in mean field approximation. Starting from the paramagnetic phase we determine the critical ratio $(t/J)_c$ of the quantum critical point and associated scaling exponents of the Kondo-singlet gap. We show that in the case of easy-axis type anisotropy $δ>1$ a qualitatively new be…
Motivated by recent neutron scattering experiments in Fe-based superconductors, we study how the magnetic resonance in the superconducting state is affected by the simultaneous presence of either static or fluctuating magnetic orders using the random phase approximation. We find that for the underdoped materials with coexisting superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders, spin rotational symmetry is explicitly broken at the ordering momentum $Q_1 = (π,0)$. Only the longitudinal susceptibility exhibits the resonance mode, whereas a spin-wave Goldstone mode develops in the transverse component.…
Effect of exchange anisotropy on the relaxation time of spin and vector chirality is studied for the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice by using the nonequilibrium relaxation Monte Carlo method. We identify the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition and the chiral transition in a wide range of the anisotropy, even for very small anisotropy of $\sim$ 0.01%. As the anisotropy decreases, both the critical temperatures steeply decrease, while the BKT critical region becomes divergently wide. We elucidate a sharp "V shape" of the phase diagram around th…
The decisive role of magnetic anisotropy even in systems with small anisotropy is illustrated for the honeycomb-layered antiferromagnets The decisive role of magnetic anisotropy in honeycomb layered Li$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$ with $A$ = Li and Na. Both systems evolve long range magnetic order below $T_{\rm N}$ = 14 and 16.5~K, respectively. The magnetic phase diagrams obtained from static magnetisation studies up to 15~T imply competing antiferromagnetic phases and a tricritical point at $T_{\rm N}$. The phase boundaries are visible in the dynamic response of the antiferromagn…
Neutron scattering studies of single-crystal LiNiPO$_4$ reveal a spontaneous first-order commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition. Short- and long-range incommensurate phases are intermediate between the high temperature paramagnetic and the low temperature antiferromagnetic phases. The modulated structure has a predominant antiferromagnetic component, giving rise to satellite peaks in the vicinity of the fundamental antiferromagnetic Bragg reflection, and a ferromagnetic component giving rise to peaks at small momentum-transfers around the origin at $(0,\pm Q,0)$. The wavelength …
We study the finite temperature, low energy, long wave-length spectrum of the dynamic structure factor of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in the presence of exchange anisotropy and external magnetic fields. Using imaginary-time quantum Monte-Carlo we extract parameters, relevant to characterize a {\it renormalized} Luttinger liquid. For small momentum our results are consistent with a change from propagating spinon density waves to spin diffusion, described by a finite-frequency spin-current relaxation rate. Results for this relaxation rate as well as other Luttinger liquid p…
A dimerized quantum Heisenberg or XY antiferromagnetic chain has a gap in the spectrum. We show that a weak incommensurate modulation around a dimerized chain produces a zero temperature quantum critical point. As the incommensuration wavelength is varied, there is a transition to a modulated gapless state. The critical behaviour is in the universality class of the classical commensurate-incommensurate (Pokrovsky-Talapov) transition. An analogous metal-insulator transition can also take place for an incommensurate chain.
We investigate the $S=2$ antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain with the exchange and single-ion anisotropies in a magnetic field, using the numerical exact diagonalization of finite-size clusters and the level spectroscopy analysis. It is found that a magnetization plateau possibly appears at a half of the saturation magnetization for some suitable anisotropy parameters. The level spectroscopy analysis indicates that the 1/2 magnetization plateau is formed by two different mechanisms, depending on the anisotropy parameters. The phase diagram of the 1/2 plateau states and some typical magnetizat…
We consider analytically and numerically an anisotropic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ delta-chain (sawtooth chain) with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. For certain values of the interactions a lowest one-particle band becomes flat and there is a class of localized-magnon eigenstates which form a ground state with a macroscopic degeneracy. In this case the model depends on a single parameter which can be chosen as the anisotropy of the exchange interactions. When this parameter changes from zero to infinity the model interpolates between the one-dim…
A structural and thermodynamic study of the newly synthesized single crystal Sr5Rh4O12 is reported. Sr5Rh4O12 consists of a triangular lattice of spin chains running along the c-axis. It is antiferromagnetically ordered below 23 K with the intrachain and interchain coupling being ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM), respectively. There is strong evidence for an Ising character in the interaction and geometrical frustration that causes incomplete long-range AFM order. The isothermal magnetization exhibits two step-like transitions leading to a ferrimagnetic state at 2.4 T and a FM st…
