A high-entropy metal disilicide, (Mo0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2W0.2)Si2, has been successfully synthesized. X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) collectively show the formation of a single high-entropy silicide phase. This high-entropy (Mo0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2W0.2)Si2 possesses a hexagonal C40 crystal structure with ABC stacking sequence and a point group of P6222. This discovery expands the known families of high-entropy materials from metals, oxides, borides, carbides, and nitrides to a silicide, for the first time to our knowledge, as well as demonstrating that a new, non-cubic, crystal structure (with lower symmetry) can be made into high-entropy. This (Mo0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2W0.2)Si2 exhibits high nanohardness of 16.7 +- 1.9 GPa and Vickers hardness of 11.6 +- 0.5 GPa. Moreover, it has a low thermal conductivity of 6.9 +- 1.1 W m-1 K-1, which is approximately one order of magnitude lower than that of the widely-used tetragonal MoSi2 and ~1/3 of those reported values for the hexagonal NbSi2 and TaSi2 with the same crystal structure.
A new type of compositionally complex (medium- or high-entropy) M5Si3 silicides is synthesized. Both (V1/5Cr1/5Nb1/5Ta1/5W1/5)5Si3 and (Ti1/5Zr1/5Nb1/5Mo1/5Hf1/5)5Si3 form single-phase homogenous solid solutions. Notably, (V1/5Cr1/5Nb1/5Ta1/5W1/5)5Si3 forms the hexagonal gamma (D88) phase, while all its five constituent binary silicides, V5Si3, Cr5Si3, Nb5Si3, Ta5Si3, and W5Si3, are stable in the tetragonal alpha (D8l) or beta (D8m) phases. Annealing at 1600C demonstrates that this hexagonal gamma phase is stable. Comparison of the experimental and calculated X-ray diffraction patterns, Rietve…
We report the synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties of two new high-entropy silicides (HESs), namely (Nb$_{0.1}$Mo$_{0.3}$W$_{0.3}$Re$_{0.2}$Ru$_{0.1}$)$_{5}$Si$_{3}$ and (Nb$_{0.2}$Mo$_{0.3}$W$_{0.3}$Re$_{0.1}$Ru$_{0.1}$)$_{5}$Si$_{3}$. Structural analysis indicates that both HESs consist of a (nearly) single tetragonal W$_{5}$Si$_{3}$-type phase (space group $I$4/$mcm$) with a disordered cation distribution. Electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements show that (Nb$_{0.1}$Mo$_{0.3}$W$_{0.3}$Re$_{0.2}$Ru$_{0.1}$)$_{5}$Si$_{3}$ and (Nb$_{0.2}$M…
We characterize composition and structure of ultrathin nickel silicide during formation from 3 nm Ni films on Si(100) using in-situ high resolution ion scattering and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. We show the transition to occur in discrete steps, in which an intermediate phase is observed within a narrow range of temperature from 230 oC to 290 oC. The film composition of this intermediate phase is found to be 50% Ni:50% Si, without evidence for long-range structure, indicating the film to be a homogeneous monosilicide NiSi phase. The final phase is resemblant of the cubic …

This invited talk will review a series of our recent studies on high-entropy ceramics (HECs) and compositionally complex ceramics (CCCs) and discuss the future perspective. Various single-phase equimolar quinary (five-component) HECs, e.g., MB2, MB, M3B4, MB4, and MB6 borides, MSi2 and M3Si5 silicides, perovskite, fluorite, and pyrochlore oxides, and (intermetallic) aluminides have been fabricated. We further proposed to extend HECs to CCCs to include non-equimolar compositions and further consider short- and long-range orders, which reduce configurational entropies but offer additional dimens…
Melting of orthorhombic boron silicide B6Si has been studied at pressures up to 8 GPa using in situ electrical resistivity measurements and quenching. It has been found that in the 2.6-7.7 GPa range B6Si melts congruently, and the melting curve exhibits negative slope of -31(2) K/GPa that points to a higher density of the melt as compared to the solid phase. At very high temperatures B6Si melt appears to be unstable and undergoes disproportionation into silicon and boron-rich silicides. The onset temperature of disproportionation strongly depends on pressure, and the corresponding low-temperat…

Boron-doped molybdenum silicides have been already recognized as attractive candidates for space and ground ultra-high temperature applications far beyond limits of state-of-the-art nickel based superalloys. In this work, we are exploring a new method for fabricating Mo-Si-B alloys (as coatings or small bulk components) by utilizing a pressure-less reactive melt infiltration approach. The basic assumption of this approach is a synthesis of binary and/or ternary and complex intermetallic phases (silicides, borides, borosilicides), through a direct interaction of Si-B melt with molybdenum . The …
The lattice dynamics for NiCo, NiFe, NiFeCo, NiFeCoCr, and NiFeCoCrMn medium to high entropy alloy have been investigated using the DFT calculation. The phonon dispersions along three different symmetry directions are calculated by the weighted dynamical matrix (WDM) approach and compared with the supercell approach and inelastic neutron scattering. We could correctly predict the trend of increasing of the vibrational entropy by adding the alloys and the highest vibrational entropy in NiFeCoCrMn high entropy alloy by WDM approach. The averaged first nearest neighbor (1NN) force constants betwe…
Do high-entropy alloys and ceramics have their grain boundary (GB) counterparts? As the concept of high-entropy grain boundaries (HEGBs) was initially proposed in 2016, this article provides the first complete and rigorous discussion of the underlying interfacial thermodynamics. A simplified segregation model can illustrate both GB and bulk high-entropy effects, which reduce GB energy with increasing temperature for saturated multicomponent (conventional and high-entropy) alloys. HEGBs can be utilized to stabilize nanocrystalline alloys at high temperatures via thermodynamic and kinetic effect…
We introduce a simplified method to model the interatomic interactions of high entropy alloys based on a lookup table of cluster energies. These interactions are employed in replica exchange Monte Carlo simulations with histogram analysis to obtain thermodynamic properties across a broad temperature range. Kikuchi's Cluster Variation Method entropy formalism and high temperature series expansions are applied to directly calculate entropy from statistics on short- and long-range chemical order, and we discuss the convergence of the entropy as clusters of differing size are included.
Here, we designed two promising schemes to realize the high-entropy structure in a series of quasi-two-dimensional compounds, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). In the intra-layer high-entropy plan, (HEM)X2 compounds with high-entropy structure in the MX2 slabs were obtained, here HEM means high-entropy metals, such as TiZrNbMoTa. And superconductivity with a Tc~7.4 K was found in a Mo-rich HEMX2. On the other hand, in the intercalation plan, we intercalated HEM-atoms (FeCoCrNiMn) into the gap between the sandwiched-MX2 slabs resulting in a series of (HEM)xMX2 compounds, x in the range …
In this present investigation, we discussed the synthesis, microstructure, and hydrogen storage behavior intermetallic Laves phase in a hexanal TiVZrMnCoFe high entropy alloy. In this HEA, three elements are hydride-forming elements and the other three are non-hydride-forming elements (Fe, Mn, Co). The thermodynamic parameter like enthalpy of mixing was calculated using Meidmas model. The possibility of developing high entropy Laves phase-based hydrogen storage materials was advocated.
A recent paper by Juntao Huo et al [Chin. Phys. Lett. 39 (2022) 0464011] reported a correlation between the entropy of mixing (and the corresponding energy state) and the thermal stability and mechanical parameters, for three Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be metallic glasses (MG) including a high-entropy one (HEMG). The authors dismissed a possible compositional contribution to the variations of the thermal stability and mechanical parameters studied.
One of the main drawbacks of the powder metallurgy route for High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs) is the unavailability of fully pre-alloyed powders in the market. Using commodity powders (commercial Ni, Fe and Co base fully pre-alloyed powders, fully available in large quantities and at competitive prices) to produce HEAs presents a completely new and competitive scenario for obtaining viable alloys for high-performance applications.
High-entropy alloys, which exist in the high-dimensional composition space, provide enormous unique opportunities for realizing unprecedented structural and functional properties. A fundamental challenge, however, lies in how to predict the specific alloy phases and desirable properties accurately. This review article provides an overview of the data-driven methods published to date to tackle this exponentially hard problem of designing high-entropy alloys. Various utilizations of empirical parameters, first-principles and thermodynamic calculations, statistical methods, and machine learning a…
