Melting of orthorhombic boron silicide B6Si has been studied at pressures up to 8 GPa using in situ electrical resistivity measurements and quenching. It has been found that in the 2.6-7.7 GPa range B6Si melts congruently, and the melting curve exhibits negative slope of -31(2) K/GPa that points to a higher density of the melt as compared to the solid phase. At very high temperatures B6Si melt appears to be unstable and undergoes disproportionation into silicon and boron-rich silicides. The onset temperature of disproportionation strongly depends on pressure, and the corresponding low-temperature boundary exhibits negative slope of -92(3) K/GPa which is indicative of significant volume decrease in the course of B6Si melt decomposition.
The orthorhombic monochalcogenide SnSe has attracted much attention in recent years as a promising high-temperature thermoelectric material. We present a study of its thermal conductivity and specific heat of SnSe between 2~K and 300~K and quantify its anisotropic thermal diffusivity, $D$. For both crystallographic orientations, thermal diffusivity remains above the recently identified Planckian limit ($D > v_s^2 τ_P$, where $v_s$ is the sound velocity and $τ_P= \hbar/k_BT$) and its anisotropy in $D$ is set by the anisotropy of $v_s$. Comparison with cubic members of the IV-VI family leads to …
While the tetragonal antiferro-electrically distorted (AFD) phase with space group $I4/mcm$ is well known for SrTiO$_3$ to occur below 105 K, there are also some hints in literature of an orthorhombic phase, either at lower temperature at high pressure. A previously proposed orthorhombic layered structure of SrTiO$_3$, known as the post-perovskite or CaIrO$_3$ structure with space group $Cmcm$ is shown to have significantly higher energy than the cubic or tetragonal phase and to have its minimum volume at larger volume than cubic perovskite. It thus cannot correspond to a high-pressure phase o…
Here we have used the density functional theory (DFT) with the GGA-PBE approximation to investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic, hardness, thermal, superconductivity and optoelectronic properties under pressure for monoclinic (P21/m) and orthorhombic (Pmn21) structures of MgVH6. We have studied optical properties of P21/m phase at 0 GPa and Pmn21 phase at 100 GPa only (considering phase stability). Both of the phases of MgVH6 are thermodynamically stable. P21/m phase is mechanically stable but Pmn21 is mechanically unstable in our calculations for the pressures considered. Monoclini…
Melting and Pressure-Induced Amorphization of Quartz

Iron represents the principal constituent of the Earth's core, but its high-pressure melting diagram remains ambiguous. Here we present a simple analytical approach to predict the melting properties of iron under deep-Earth conditions. In our model, anharmonic free energies of the solid phase are directly determined by the moment expansion technique in quantum statistical mechanics. This basis associated with the Lindemann criterion for a vibrational instability can deduce the melting temperature. Moreover, we correlate the thermal expansion process with the shear response to explain a discont…
Melting behaviors of defective crystals under extreme conditions are theoretically investigated using the statistical moment method. In our theoretical model, heating processes cause missing atoms or vacancies in crystal structures via dislocating them from their equilibrium positions. The coordination number of some atoms is assumed to be removed by one unit and the defect depends on temperature and external pressure. We formulate analytical expressions to directly connect the equilibrium vacancy concentration, the elastic modulus, and the melting temperature. Numerical calculations are carri…
MgO is an abundant mineral in the rocky mantle of terrestrial planets, but its melting behaviors remain enigmatic. Here we introduce a simple theoretical model to investigate the B1-liquid transition of MgO up to 370 GPa. Vibrational free energies of B1-MgO are fully computed by the moment recurrence technique in quantum statistical physics. On that basis, we associate the melting temperature with the isothermal bulk modulus via the work-heat equivalence principle. This strategy allows us to quantitatively explain recent experimental data. Our numerical analyses would yield insights into plane…
Re-entrant melting (in which a substance's melting point starts to decrease beyond a certain pressure) is believed to be an unusual phenomenon. Among the elements, it has so far only been observed in a very limited number of species, e.g., the alkali metals. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that this behavior actually extends beyond alkali metals to include magnesium, which also undergoes re-entrant melting, though at the much higher pressure of ~300 GPa. We find that the origin of re-entrant melting is the faster softening of interatomic interactions in the liquid phase than …
Sm-doped BiFeO3 compacted powders with composition across the morphotropic phase boundary region were prepared by sol-gel method. Crystal structure, morphology and magnetic state of the compounds were analyzed as a function of dopant concentration, temperature and external pressure using synchrotron and laboratory X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, Raman and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Application of external pressure shifts the phase transition from the rhombohedral structure to the nonpolar orthorhombic structure towards lower concentration of the dopant content, wherein the amount of the a…
Iron under Earth's core conditions: Liquid-state thermodynamics and high-pressure melting curve
Based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we determined the melting curve of magnesium (Mg) up to ~460 GPa using the solid-liquid coexistence method. Between ~30 and 100 GPa, our melting curve is noticeably lower than those from static experiments, but is in good agreement with recent shock experiments. Up to ~450 GPa, our melting curve is generally consistent with the melting points from first-principles calculations using the small-cell coexistence method. We found that, at high pressures of a few hundred GPa, due to the strong softening of interatomic interactions in the liquid pha…
The high-pressure melting properties of the ternary alloy AlCuSi with face-centred cubic structure is theoretically investigated using the statistical moment method. We calculate the melting temperature for the alloy under pressure up to 80 GPa. The dependence of the melting temperature on the content of alloying elements is also studied. Our results agree well with previous experiments, simulations, and other theoretical calculations.
The prediction of the melting curve of metals by extrapolation to high pressures and temperatures based on the Lindemann-Gilvarry criterion (LG) assuming harmonic Debye solid is presented. The LG formulation uses the bulk modulus B and its pressure derivative B' as fit parameters deduced directly from the equation of state, however, the results are not unique and strongly depends on the chosen equation of state (EOS). By introducing a constraint that the bulk moduli parameters B and B' must simultaneously obey the Lindemann-Gilvarry criterion (LG) and the EOS, consistent bulk moduli are derive…
The p-V-T equation of state of magnesium metal has been measured up to 20 GPa and 1500 K using both multianvil and opposite anvil techniques combined with synchrotron X-ray diffraction. To fit the experimental data, the model of Anderson-Grüneisen has been used with fixed parameter δT. The 300-K bulk modulus of B0 = 32.5(1) GPa and its first pressure derivative, B0' = 3.73(2), have been obtained by fitting available data up to 20 GPa to Murnaghan equation of state. Thermal expansion at ambient pressure has been described using second order polynomial with coefficients a = 25(2)x10-6 K-1 and b …
Hexagonally structured MnRuP was studied under high pressure up to 35 GPa from 5 to 300 K using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We observed that a partial phase transition from hexagonal to orthorhombic symmetry started at 11 GPa. The new and denser orthorhombic phase coexisted with its parent phase for an unusually long pressure range, ΔP ~ 50 GPa. We attribute this structural transformation to a magnetic origin, where a decisive criterion for the boundary of the mixed phase lays in the different distances between the Mn-Mn atoms. In addition, our theoretical study shows that the orthorhombic …
It is claimed that all of the pressure scales of the reported melting curves derived by diamond anvil cell experiments require a correction which takes into account the pressure thermal shift, where vanadium is an illustrative example. The linear behavior of the thermal pressure (Pth) vs. the temperature, as predicted by first principles theoretical assumptions is then experimentally confirmed. This allows extrapolation to determine of the actual pressure and thermal temperature at the melt. Accounting for the role of the pressure transmitting media in diamond anvil cell experiments, the analy…
The high-pressure melting curves of metals provide simple and useful tests for theories of melting, as well as important constraints for the modeling of planetary interiors. Here, we present an experimental technique that reveals the latent heat of fusion of a metal sample compressed inside a diamond anvil cell. The technique combines microsecond-timescale pulsed electrical heating with an internally-heated diamond anvil cell for the first time. Further, we use the technique to measure the melting curve of platinum to the highest pressure measured to date. Melting temperature increases from $\…
