Configurational entropy can impact crystallization processes, tipping the scales between structures of nearly equal internal energy. Using alloyed single crystals of Gd2PdSi3 in the AlB2-type structure, we explore the formation of complex layer sequences made from alternating, two-dimensional triangular and honeycomb slabs. A four-period and an eight-period stacking sequence are found to be very close in internal energy, the latter being favored by entropy associated with covering the full configuration space of interlayer bonds. Possible consequences of polytype formation on magnetism in Gd2PdSi3 are discussed.
Endowed with a multitude of exquisite properties such as rich electrochemistry, superb topology and eccentric electromagnetic phenomena, honeycomb layered oxides have risen to the top echelons of science with applications in diverse fields ranging from condensed matter physics, solid-state chemistry, materials science, solid-state ionics to electrochemistry. However, these oxides are vastly underutilised as their underlying atomistic mechanisms remain unexplored. Therefore, in this study, atomic-resolution imaging on pristine $\rm K_2Ni_2TeO_6$ along multiple zone axes was conducted using sphe…
A high-entropy metal disilicide, (Mo0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2W0.2)Si2, has been successfully synthesized. X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) collectively show the formation of a single high-entropy silicide phase. This high-entropy (Mo0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2W0.2)Si2 possesses a hexagonal C40 crystal structure with ABC stacking sequence and a point group of P6222. This discovery expands the known families of high-entropy materials from metals, oxides, borides, carbides, and nitrides to a silicide, for the first time to our knowle…
Honeycomb layered oxides have garnered tremendous research interest in a wide swath of disciplines owing not only to the myriad physicochemical properties they exhibit, but also their rich crystal structural versatility. Herein, a comprehensive crystallographic study of a sodium-based $\rm Na_2Ni_2TeO_6$ honeycomb layered oxide has been performed using atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy, elucidating a plethora of atomic arrangement (stacking) disorders in the pristine material. Stacking disorders in the arrangement of honeycomb metal slab layers (stacking faults) occur predomin…
We have investigated the growth of Pt on Ge(110) using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The deposition of several monolayers of Pt on Ge(110) followed by annealing at 1100 K results in the formation of three-dimensional metallic Pt-Ge nanocrystals. The outermost layer of these crystals exhibits a honeycomb structure. The honeycomb structure is composed of two hexagonal sub-lattices that are displaced vertically by 0.2 Å with respect to each other. The nearest-neighbor distance of the atoms in the honeycomb lattice is 2.5${\pm}$0.1 Å, i.e. very close to the predicted nearest-neig…
We report the discovery of weak topological insulators by ab initio calculations in a honeycomb lattice. We propose a structure with an odd number of layers in the primitive unit-cell as a prerequisite for forming weak topological insulators. Here, the single-layered KHgSb is the most suitable candidate for its large bulk energy gap of 0.24 eV. Its side surface hosts metallic surface states, forming two anisotropic Dirac cones. Though the stacking of even-layered structures leads to trivial insulators, the structures can host a quantum spin Hall layer with a large bulk gap, if an additional si…

The synthesis of IrI$_3$ at high pressure in its layered honeycomb polymorph is reported. Its crystal structure is refined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Faults in the honeycomb layer stacking are observed by single crystal diffraction, synchrotron powder diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. A previously unreported hyperhoneycomb polymorph of IrI$_3$ ($β$-IrI$_3$), is also described. Its structure in space group Fddd is determined by single crystal XRD. Both materials are highly-resistive diamagnetic semiconductors, consistent with a low spin d$^6$ configuration for Ir(III)…
The synthesis, structure, and basic magnetic properties of Na2Co2TeO6 and Na3Co2SbO6 are reported. The crystal structures were determined by neutron powder diffraction. Na2Co2TeO6 has a two-layer hexagonal structure (space group P6322) while Na3Co2SbO6 has a single-layer monoclinic structure (space group C2/m). The Co, Te, and Sb ions are in octahedral coordination, and the edge sharing octahedra form planes interleaved by sodium ions. Both compounds have full ordering of the Co2+ and Te6+/Sb5+ ions in the ab plane such that the Co2+ ions form a honeycomb array; the stacking of the honeycomb a…
The Rashba effect is fundamental to the physics of two-dimensional electron systems and underlies a variety of spintronic phenomena. It has been proposed that the formation of Rashba-type spin splittings originates microscopically from the existence of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the Bloch wave functions. Here, we present detailed experimental evidence for this OAM-based origin of the Rashba effect by angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and two-photon photoemission (2PPE) experiments for a monolayer AgTe on Ag(111). Using quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis we d…
$\mathrm{Cu_2IrO_3}$ is among the newest layered honeycomb iridates and a promising candidate to harbor a Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. Here, we investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of its structure through a combination of powder x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption fine structure measurements, as well as $ab$-$initio$ evolutionary structure search. At ambient pressure, we revise the previously proposed $C2/c$ solution with a related but notably more stable $P2_1/c$ structure. Pressures below 8 GPa drive the formation of Ir-Ir dimers at both ambient and low temperatures, …
The current family of experimentally realized two-dimensional magnetic materials consist of 3$d$ transition metals with very weak spin-orbit coupling. In contrast, we report a new platform in a chemically bonded and layered 4$d$ oxide, with strong electron correlations and competing spin-orbit coupling. We synthesize ultra-thin sheets of SrRu$_2$O$_6$ using scalable liquid exfoliation. These exfoliated sheets are characterized by complementary experimental and theoretical techniques. The thickness of the nano-sheets varies between three to five monolayers, and within the first-principles calcu…
We propose structure models of the unique long-period stacking/order (LPSO) phases formed in the Mg-Zn-RE alloys, based on Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) observations and first-principles calculations. The LPSO structures are long-period stacking derivatives of the hcp-Mg structure, and the Zn/RE distributions are restricted at the four close-packed atomic layers forming local fcc-stacking (i.e., a local ABCA stacking). Chemical order is well developed for the LPSO phases formed in Mg97Zn1Er2 (14H-type) and Mg85Zn6Y9 (18R-type) alloys with pronounced superlattice r…
In $α$-RuCl$_3$, an external magnetic field applied within the honeycomb plane can induce a transition from a magnetically ordered state to a disordered state that is potentially related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. In zero field, single crystals with minimal stacking faults display a low-temperature state with in-plane zigzag antiferromagnetic order and a three-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Here, we present angle-dependent magnetization, ac susceptibility, and thermal transport data that demonstrate the presence of an additional intermediate-f…
$α$-graphyne is a two-dimensional sheet of $sp$-$sp^2$ hybridized carbon atoms in a honeycomb lattice. While the geometrical structure is similar to that of graphene, the hybridized triple bonds give rise to electronic structure that is different from that of graphene. Similar to graphene, $α$-graphyne can be stacked in bilayers with two stable configurations, but the different stackings have very different electronic structures: one is predicted to have gapless parabolic bands and the other a tunable band gap which is attractive for applications. In order to realize applications, it is crucia…
The unique properties of topological semimetals have strongly driven efforts to seek for new topological phases and related materials. Here, we identify a critical condition for the existence of linked nodal rings (LNRs) in symmorphic crystals, and propose that three types of LNRs, named as alpha-, beta- and gamma-type, can be obtained by stacking semiconducting layers. Several honeycomb structures are suggested to be topological LNR semimetals, including layered and "hidden" layered structures. Transitions between the three types of LNRs can be driven by external strains. Interesting surface …
Due to the absence of matching carbon atoms at honeycomb centers with carbon atoms in adjacent graphene sheets, theorists predicted that a sliding process is needed to form AA, AB, or ABC stacking when directly converting graphite into sp3 bonded diamond. Here, using twisted bilayer graphene, which naturally provides AA and AB stacking configurations, we report the ultrafast formation of a transient 2D diamond-like structure (which is not observed in aligned graphene) under femtosecond laser irradiation. This photo-induced phase transition is evidenced by the appearance of new bond lengths of …
This work presents a theoretical study of the structural and electronic properties of bilayered silicon films under in-plane biaxial strain/stress using density functional theory. Atomic structures of the two-dimensional silicon films are optimized by using both the local-density approximation and generalized gradient approximation. In the absence of strain/stress, five buckled hexagonal honeycomb structures of the bilayered silicon film have been obtained as local energy minima and their structural stability has been verified. These structures present a Dirac-cone shaped energy band diagram w…
The synthesis, structure, and elementary magnetic and electronic properties are reported for layered compounds of the type Na3-xMIr2O6 and Na3-xM2IrO6, where M is a transition metal from the 3d series (M=Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe and Mn). The rhombohedral structures, in space group R-3m, were determined by refinement of neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction data. No clear evidence for long range 2:1 or 1:2 honeycomb-like M/Ir ordering was found in the neutron powder diffraction patterns except in the case of M = Zn, thus in general the compounds are best designated as sodium deficient α-NaFeO2-t…
