In this paper characters of the normaliser of $d$-split Levi subgroups in $\mathrm {SL}_n(q)$ and $\mathrm {SU}_n(q)$ are parametrized with a particular focus on the Clifford theory between the Levi subgroup and its normalizer. These results are applied to verify the Alperin-McKay conjecture for primes $\ell$ with $\ell\nmid 6(q^2-1)$ and the Alperin weight conjecture for $\ell$-blocks of those quasi-simple groups with abelian defect. The inductive Alperin-McKay condition and inductive Alperin weight condition by the second author are verified for certain blocks of $\mathrm {SL}_n(q)$ and $\mathrm {SU}_n(q)$.
In this paper we consider the inductive Alperin-McKay condition for quasi-isolated 2-blocks of exceptional groups of Lie type. Thereby, we complete the proof of the Alperin-McKay conjecture for the prime 2.
We verify the inductive blockwise Alperin weight (BAW) and the inductive Alperin-McKay (AM) conditions introduced by the second author for blocks of finite quasisimple groups with cyclic defect groups. Furthermore we establish a criterion that describes conditions under which the inductive AM condition for blocks with abelian defect groups implies the inductive BAW condition for those blocks.
In this paper, we show that the Alperin-McKay conjecture holds for 2-blocks of maximal defect. A major step in the proof is the verification of the inductive Alperin-McKay condition for the principal 2-block of groups of Lie type in odd characteristic.
The Alperin-McKay conjecture is a longstanding open conjecture in the representation theory of finite groups. Späth showed that the Alperin-McKay conjecture holds if the so-called inductive Alperin-McKay (iAM) condition holds for all finite simple groups. In a previous paper, the author has proved that it is enough to verify the inductive condition for quasi-isolated blocks of groups of Lie type. In this paper we show that the verification of the iAM-condition can be further reduced in many cases to isolated blocks. As a consequence of this we obtain a proof of the Alperin-McKay conjecture for…
We show that Dade's ordinary conjecture implies the Alperin-McKay conjecture. We remark that some of the methods can be used to identify a canonical height zero character in a nilpotent block.
The Alperin-McKay conjecture relates height zero characters of an $\ell$-block with the ones of its Brauer correspondent. This conjecture has been reduced to the so-called inductive Alperin-McKay conditions about quasi-simple groups by the third author. Those conditions are still open for groups of Lie type. The present paper describes characters of height zero in $\ell$-blocks of groups of Lie type over a field with $q$ elements when $\ell$ divides $q-1$. We also give information about $\ell$-blocks and Brauer correspondents. As an application we show that quasi-simple groups of type $C$ over…
Let $G$ be a finite solvable or symmetric group and let $B$ be a $2$-block of $G$. We construct a canonical correspondence between the irreducible characters of height zero in $B$ and those in its Brauer first main correspondent. For symmetric groups our bijection is compatible with restriction of characters.
Let p be a prime, B a p-block of a finite group G and b its Brauer correspondent. According to the Alperin-McKay Conjecture, there exists a bijection between the set of irreducible ordinary characters of height zero of B and those of b. In this paper, we show that whenever G is p-solvable such a bijection can be found, both for ordinary and Brauer characters, with the additional property of being compatible with divisibility of character degrees. In this case, we also show that the dimension of b divides the dimension of B.
Späth showed that the Alperin-McKay conjecture in the representation theory of finite groups holds if the so-called inductive Alperin-McKay condition holds for all finite simple groups. In a previous article, we showed that the Bonnafé-Rouquier equivalence for blocks of finite groups of Lie type can be lifted to include automorphisms of groups of Lie type. We use our results to reduce the verification of the inductive condition for groups of Lie type to quasi-isolated blocks.
We prove the Alperin-McKay Conjecture for all $p$-blocks of finite groups with metacyclic, minimal non-abelian defect groups. These are precisely the metacyclic groups whose derived subgroup have order $p$. In the special case $p=3$, we also verify Alperin's Weight Conjecture for these defect groups. Moreover, in case $p=5$ we do the same for the non-abelian defect groups $C_{25}\rtimes C_{5^n}$. The proofs do not rely on the classification of the finite simple groups.
As a sequel to [CS13b], we verify the so-called inductive AM-condition introduced in [Sp12] for simple groups of type A and blocks with maximal defect. This is part of the program set up to verify the Alperin-McKay conjecture through its reduction to a problem on quasi-simple groups (see [Sp13]) but also the missing direction of Brauer's height zero conjecture (see [NS14])
The so-called inductive McKay condition on finite simple groups, due to Isaacs-Malle-Navarro (2007), has been recently reformulated by Späth. We show that this reformulation applies to the reduction theorem for Alperin's weight conjecture, due to Navarro-Tiep (2011). This also simplifies the checking of the inductive condition for Alperin's weight conjecture in the case of simple groups of Lie type with regard to the defining prime.
We give a criterion that simplifies the checking of the inductive Alperin weight condition for the remaining open cases of simple groups of Lie type. It is strongly related in form to the criterion of the second author for the inductive McKay conditions (see [Spä12,2.12]) that has proved very useful. The proof follows from a Clifford theory for weights intrinsically present in the proof of reduction theorems of the Alperin weight conjecture given by Navarro--Tiep and the second author. We also give a related criterion for the inductive blockwise Alperin weight condition.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. In this paper, we characterize the nonabelian composition factors of a finite group with odd $p$-Sylow automizers, and then prove that the McKay conjecture, the Alperin weight conjecture and the Alperin-McKay conjecture hold for such group.
We prove that Brauer's Height Zero Conjecture holds for p-blocks of finite groups with metacyclic defect groups. If the defect group is nonabelian and contains a cyclic maximal subgroup, we obtain the distribution into p-conjugate and p-rational irreducible characters. Then the Alperin-McKay Conjecture follows provided p=3. Along the way we verify a few other conjectures. Finally we consider the extraspecial defect group of order p^3 and exponent p^2 for an odd prime more closely. Here for blocks with inertial index 2 we prove the Galois-Alperin-McKay Conjecture by computing k_0(B). Then for p…
We determine the non-abelian composition factors of the finite groups with Sylow normalizers of odd order. As a consequence, among others, we prove the McKay conjecture and the Alperin weight conjecture for these groups.
We show that Brauer's height zero conjecture holds for blocks of finite quasi-simple groups. This result is used in Navarro-Späth's reduction of this conjecture for general groups to the inductive Alperin-McKay condition for simple groups.
We determine the numerical invariants of blocks with defect group D_{2^n} * C_{2^m} = Q_{2^n} * C_{2^m} (central product), where n > 2 and m > 1. As a consequence, we prove Brauer's k(B)-conjecture, Olsson's conjecture (and more generally Eaton's conjecture), Brauer's height zero conjecture, the Alperin-McKay conjecture, Alperin's weight conjecture and Robinson's ordinary weight conjecture for these blocks. Moreover, we show that the gluing problem has a unique solution in this case.
This paper has two main parts. Firstly, we give a classification of the $\ell$-blocks of finite special linear and unitary groups $SL_n(εq)$ in the non-defining characteristic $\ell\ge 3$. Secondly, we describe how the $\ell$-weights of $SL_n(εq)$ can be obtained from the $\ell$-weights of $GL_n(εq)$ when $\ell\nmid\mathrm{gcd}(n,q-ε)$, and verify the Alperin weight conjecture for $SL_n(εq)$ under the condition $\ell\nmid\mathrm{gcd}(n,q-ε)$. As a step to establish the Alperin weight conjecture for all finite groups, we prove the inductive blockwise Alperin weight condition for any unipotent $…
We present a new criterion to predict if a character of a finite group extends. Let $G$ be a finite group and $p$ a prime. For $N\lhd G$, we consider $p$-blocks $b$ and $b'$ of $N$ and ${\rm N}_N(D)$, respectively, with $(b')^N=b$, where $D$ is a defect group of $b'$. Under the assumption that $G$ coincides with a normal subgroup $G[b]$ of $G$, which was introduced by Dade early 1970's, we give a character correspondence between the sets of all irreducible constituents of $ϕ^G$ and those of $(ϕ')^{{\rm N}_G(D)}$ where $ϕ$ and $ϕ'$ are irreducible Brauer characters in $b$ and $b'$, respectively…
We determine the numerical invariants of blocks with defect group D_{2^n}\times C_{2^m}, where D_{2^n} denotes a dihedral group of order 2^n and C_{2^m} denotes a cyclic group of order 2^m. This generalizes Brauer's results for m=0.
In this paper characters of the normaliser of d-split Levi subgroups in Sp2n(q) are parametrised with a particular focus on the Clifford theory between the Levi subgroup and its normaliser. This forms a key step in verifying the inductive Alperin-McKay condition from Späth via a criterion given by Späth and the author.
In this paper, we prove that a refinement of the Alperin-McKay Conjecture for $p$-blocks of finite groups, formulated by I. M. Isaacs and G. Navarro in 2002, holds for all covering groups of the symmetric and alternating groups, whenever $p$ is an odd prime.
In this paper, we study the relationship between the McKay quivers of a finite subgroups $G$ of special linear groups general linear groups, via some natural extension and embedding. We show that the McKay quiver of certain extension of a finite subgroup $G$ of $\mathrm{SL}(m,\mathbb C)$ in $\mathrm{GL}(m,\mathbb C)$ is a regular covering of the McKay quiver of $G$, and when embedding $G$ in a canonical way into $\mathrm{GL}(m-1,\mathbb C)$, the new McKay quiver is obtained by adding an arrow from the Nakayama translation of $i$ back to $i$ for each $i$. We also show that certain interesting e…
We are interested in the McKay quiver $Γ(G)$ and skew group rings $A*G$, where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, where $V$ is a finite dimensional vector space over a field $K$, and $A$ is a $K-G$-algebra. These skew group rings appear in Auslander's version of the McKay correspondence. In the first part of this paper we consider complex reflection groups $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$ and find a combinatorial method, making use of Young diagrams, to construct the McKay quivers for the groups $G(r,p,n)$. We first look at the case $G(1,1,n)$, which is isomorphic to the symmetric group…
Let $N$ be a normal subgroup of a finite group $G$ and $V$ be a fixed finite-dimensional $G$-module. The Poincaré series for the multiplicities of induced modules and restriction modules in the tensor algebra $T(V)=\oplus_{k \geq 0}V^{\otimes k}$ are studied in connection with the McKay-Slodowy correspondence. In particular, it is shown that the closed formulas for the Poincaré series associated with the distinguished pairs of subgroups of $\mathrm{SU}_2$ give rise to the exponents of all untwisted and twisted affine Lie algebras except ${\rm A}_{2n}^{(1)}$.
For each prime number $s$ we introduce examples of $(s-1)$- and $s$-representation infinite algebras in the sense of Herschend, Iyama and Oppermann, which arise from skew group algebras of some metacyclic groups embedded in $\mathrm{SL}(s,\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathrm{SL}(s+1,\mathbb{C})$. For this purpose, we give a description of the McKay quiver with a superpotential of such groups. Moreover we show that for $s=2$ our examples correspond to the classical tame hereditary algebras of type $\tilde{D}$.
The Alperin--McKay conjecture relates irreducible characters of a block of an arbitrary finite group to those of its $p$-local subgroups. A refinement of this conjecture was stated by the author in a previous paper. We prove that this refinement holds for all blocks of symmetric groups. Along the way we identify a "canonical" isometry between the principal block of $S_{pw}$ and that of $S_p\wr S_w$. We also prove a general theorem on expressing virtual characters of wreath products in terms of certain induced characters. Much of the paper generalises character-theoretic results on blocks of sy…
The $n$-slice algebra is introduced as a generalization of path algebra in higher dimensional representation theory. In this paper, we give a classification of $n$-slice algebras via their $(n+1)$-preprojective algebras and the trivial extensions of their quadratic duals. One can always relate tame $n$-slice algebras to the McKay quiver of a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(n+1, \mathbb C)$. In the case of $n=2$, we describe the relations for the $2$-slice algebras related to the McKay quiver of finite Abelian subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}(3, \mathbb C)$ and of the finite subgroups obtained from em…
Assume $G$ is a finite symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(q)$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic. We describe the action of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ on the set $\mathrm{Irr}(G)$ of ordinary irreducible characters of $G$. This description relies on the equivariance of Deligne--Lusztig induction with respect to automorphisms. We state a version of this equivariance which gives a precise way to compute the automorphism on the corresponding Levi subgroup; this may be of independent interest. As an application we prove that the global condition in Späth's crite…
