Consider the product $X = X_{1}\cdots X_{m}$ of $m$ independent $n\times n$ iid random matrices. When $m$ is fixed and the dimension $n$ tends to infinity, we prove Gaussian limits for the centered linear spectral statistics of $X$ for analytic test functions. We show that the limiting variance is universal in the sense that it does not depend on $m$ (the number of factor matrices) or on the distribution of the entries of the matrices. The main result generalizes and improves upon previous limit statements for the linear spectral statistics of a single iid matrix by Rider and Silverstein as well as Renfrew and the second author.
We consider a class of elliptic random matrices which generalize two classical ensembles from random matrix theory: Wigner matrices and random matrices with iid entries. In particular, we establish a central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of real elliptic random matrices under the assumption that the test functions are analytic. As a corollary, we extend the results of Rider and Silverstein to real iid random matrices.
It is known that in various random matrix models, large perturbations create outlier eigenvalues which lie, asymptotically, in the complement of the support of the limiting spectral density. This paper is concerned with fluctuations of these outlier eigenvalues of iid matrices $X_n$ under bounded rank and bounded operator norm perturbations $A_n$, namely with $λ(\frac{X_n}{\sqrt{n}}+A_n)-λ(A_n)$. The perturbations we consider are allowed to be of arbitrary Jordan type and have (left and right) eigenvectors satisfying a mild condition. We obtain the joint convergence of the (normalized) asympto…
One can identify a tripartite classification of random matrix ensembles into geometrical universality classes corresponding to the plane, the sphere and the anti-sphere. The plane is identified with Ginibre-type (iid) matrices and the anti-sphere with truncations of unitary matrices. This paper focusses on an ensemble corresponding to the sphere: matrices of the form $\bY= \bA^{-1} \bB$, where $\bA$ and $\bB$ are independent $N\times N$ matrices with iid standard Gaussian real quaternion entries. By applying techniques similar to those used for the analogous complex and real spherical ensemble…
We study stochastic properties of the norm cocycle associated with iid products of positive matrices. We obtain the almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) with rate o(n 1/p) under the optimal condition of a moment or order p > 2 and the Berry-Esseen theorem with rate O(1/ $\sqrt$ n) under the optimal condition of a moment of order 3. The results are also valid for the matrix norm. For the matrix coefficients, we also have the ASIP but we obtain only partial results for the Berry-Esseen theorem. The proofs make use of coupling coefficients that surprisingly decay exponentially fast to 0 while …
We study the asymptotic behavior of outliers in the spectrum of bounded rank perturbations of large random matrices. In particular, we consider perturbations of elliptic random matrices which generalize both Wigner random matrices and non-Hermitian random matrices with iid entries. As a consequence, we recover the results of Capitaine, Donati-Martin, and Féral for perturbed Wigner matrices as well as the results of Tao for perturbed random matrices with iid entries. Along the way, we prove a number of interesting results concerning elliptic random matrices whose entries have finite fourth mome…
It is known that if one perturbs a large iid random matrix by a bounded rank error, then the majority of the eigenvalues will remain distributed according to the circular law. However, the bounded rank perturbation may also create one or more outlier eigenvalues. We show that if the perturbation is small, then the outlier eigenvalues are created next to the outlier eigenvalues of the bounded rank perturbation; but if the perturbation is large, then many more outliers can be created, and their law is governed by the zeroes of a random Laurent series with Gaussian coefficients. On the other hand…
In this paper we study the joint distributional convergence of the largest eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix of a $p$-dimensional time series with iid entries when $p$ converges to infinity together with the sample size $n$. We consider only heavy-tailed time series in the sense that the entries satisfy some regular variation condition which ensures that their fourth moment is infinite. In this case, Soshnikov [31, 32] and Auffinger et al. [2] proved the weak convergence of the point processes of the normalized eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix towards an inhomogeneous Pois…
The maximum correlation of functions of a pair of random variables is an important measure of stochastic dependence. It is known that this maximum nonlinear correlation is identical to the absolute value of the Pearson correlation for a pair of Gaussian random variables or a pair of finite sums of iid random variables. This paper extends these results to pairwise Gaussian vectors and processes, nested sums of iid random variables, and permutation symmetric functions of sub-groups of iid random variables. It also discusses applications to additive regression models.
Let $X^N$ be a family of $N\times N$ independent GUE random matrices, $Z^N$ a family of deterministic matrices, $P$ a self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial, that is for any $N$, $P(X^N)$ is self-adjoint, $f$ a smooth function. We prove that for any $k$, if $f$ is smooth enough, there exist deterministic constants $α_i^P(f,Z^N)$ such that $$ \mathbb{E}\left[\frac{1}{N}\text{Tr}\left( f(P(X^N,Z^N)) \right)\right]\ =\ \sum_{i=0}^k \frac{α_i^P(f,Z^N)}{N^{2i}}\ +\ \mathcal{O}(N^{-2k-2}) .$$ Besides the constants $α_i^P(f,Z^N)$ are built explicitly with the help of free probability. In particular,…
We study the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of random matrices with iid entries. Let $N$ be a random matrix with iid entries which have symmetric distribution. For each unit eigenvector $\mathbf{v}$ of $N$ our main results provide a small ball probability bound for linear combinations of the coordinates of $\mathbf{v}$. Our results generalize the works of Meehan and Nguyen as well as Touri and the second author for random symmetric matrices. Along the way, we provide an optimal estimate of the probability that an iid matrix has simple spectrum, improving a recent result of Ge. Our techniques als…
For fixed positive integers m, we consider the product of m independent n by n random matrices with iid entries as in the limit as n tends to infinity. Under suitable assumptions on the entries of each matrix, it is known that the limiting empirical distribution of the eigenvalues is described by the m-th power of the circular law. Moreover, this same limiting distribution continues to hold if each iid random matrix is additively perturbed by a bounded rank deterministic error. However, the bounded rank perturbations may create one or more outlier eigenvalues. We describe the asymptotic locati…
We prove that few largest (and most important) eigenvalues of random symmetric matrices of various kinds are very strongly concentrated. This strong concentration enables us to compute the means of these eigenvalues with high precision. Our approach uses Talagrand's inequality and is very different from standard approaches.
We consider a class of sparse random matrices, which includes the adjacency matrix of Erdős-Rényi graphs $\mathcal G(N,p)$ for $p \in [N^{\varepsilon-1},N^{-\varepsilon}]$. We identify the joint limiting distributions of the eigenvalues away from 0 and the spectral edges. Our result indicates that unlike Wigner matrices, the eigenvalues of sparse matrices satisfy central limit theorems with normalization $N\sqrt{p}$. In addition, the eigenvalues fluctuate simultaneously: the correlation of two eigenvalues of the same/different sign is asymptotically 1/-1. We also prove CLTs for the eigenvalue …
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for linear statistics of the eigenvalues of band random matrices provided $\sqrt{n} \ll b_n \ll n$ and test functions are sufficiently smooth.
Let $U^N = (U_1^N,\dots, U^N_p)$ be a d-tuple of $N\times N$ independent Haar unitary matrices and $Z^{NM}$ be any family of deterministic matrices in $\mathbb{M}_N(\mathbb{C})\otimes \mathbb{M}_M(\mathbb{C})$. Let $P$ be a self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial. In 1998, Voiculescu showed that the empirical measure of the eigenvalues of this polynomial evaluated in Haar unitary matrices and deterministic matrices converges towards a deterministic measure defined thanks to free probability theory. Let now $f$ be a smooth function, the main technical result of this paper is a precise bound of …
We prove that the linear statistics of the eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix converge to a universal Gaussian process on all mesoscopic spectral scales, i.e. scales larger than the typical eigenvalue spacing and smaller than the global extent of the spectrum.
Random matrices formed from i.i.d. standard real Gaussian entries have the feature that the expected number of real eigenvalues is non-zero. This property persists for products of such matrices, independently chosen, and moreover it is known that as the number of matrices in the product tends to infinity, the probability that all eigenvalues are real tends to unity. We quantify the distribution of the number of real eigenvalues for products of finite size real Gaussian matrices by giving an explicit Pfaffian formula for the probability that there are exactly $k$ real eigenvalues as a determina…
We study large Wigner random matrices in the case when the marginal distributions of matrix entries have heavy tails. We prove that the largest eigenvalues of such matrices have Poisson statistics.
Using a change-of-measure argument, we prove an equality in law between the process of largest eigenvalues in a generalized Wishart random-matrix process and a last-passage percolation process. This equality in law was conjectured by Borodin and Peche.
We consider large complex random sample covariance matrices obtained from "spiked populations", that is when the true covariance matrix is diagonal with all but finitely many eigenvalues equal to one. We investigate the limiting behavior of the largest eigenvalues when the population and the sample sizes both become large. Under some conditions on moments of the sample distribution, we prove that the asymptotic fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues are the same as for a complex Gaussian sample with the same true covariance. The real setting is also considered.
We study CMV matrices (a discrete one-dimensional Dirac-type operator) with random decaying coefficients. Under mild assumptions we identify the local eigenvalue statistics in the natural scaling limit. For rapidly decreasing coefficients, the eigenvalues have rigid spacing (like the numerals on a clock); in the case of slow decrease, the eigenvalues are distributed according to a Poisson process. For a certain critical rate of decay we obtain the circular beta ensembles of random matrix theory. The temperature β^{-1} appears as the square of the coupling constant.
After proper rescaling and under some technical assumptions, the smallest eigenvalue of a sample covariance matrix with aspect ratio bounded away from 1 converges to the Tracy--Widom distribution. This complements the results on the largest eigenvalue, due to Soshnikov and Peche.
We establish, under a moment matching hypothesis, the local universality of the correlation functions associated with products of $M$ independent iid random matrices, as $M$ is fixed, and the sizes of the matrices tend to infinity. This generalizes an earlier result of Tao and the third author for the case $M=1$. We also prove Gaussian limits for the centered linear spectral statistics of products of $M$ independent iid random matrices. This is done in two steps. First, we establish the result for product random matrices with Gaussian entries, and then extend to the general case of non-Gaussia…
We study point process convergence for sequences of iid random walks. The objective is to derive asymptotic theory for the extremes of these random walks. We show convergence of the maximum random walk to the Gumbel distribution under the existence of a $(2+δ)$th moment. We make heavily use of precise large deviation results for sums of iid random variables. As a consequence, we derive the joint convergence of the off-diagonal entries in sample covariance and correlation matrices of a high-dimensional sample whose dimension increases with the sample size. This generalizes known results on the …
We consider dynamically defined Hermitian matrices generated from orbits of the doubling map. We prove that their spectra fall into the GUE universality class from random matrix theory.
We prove concentration results for $\ell_p^n$ operator norms of rectangular random matrices and eigenvalues of self-adjoint random matrices. The random matrices we consider have bounded entries which are independent, up to a possible self-adjointness constraint. Our results are based on an isoperimetric inequality for product spaces due to Talagrand.
It is well-known that distances in random iid matrices are highly concentrated around their mean. In this note we extend this concentration phenomenon to Wigner matrices. Exponential bounds for the lower tail are also included.
We address overcrowding estimates for the singular values of random iid matrices, as well as for the eigenvalues of random Wigner matrices. We show evidence of long range separation under arbitrary perturbation even in matrices of discrete entry distributions. In many cases our method yields nearly optimal bounds
We show that the permanent of an $n \times n$ matrix with iid Bernoulli entries $\pm 1$ is of magnitude $n^{({1/2}+o(1))n}$ with probability $1-o(1)$. In particular, it is almost surely non-zero.
We show that a nearly square iid random integral matrix is surjective over the integral lattice with very high probability. This answers a question by Koplewitz. Our result extends to sparse matrices as well as to matrices of dependent entries.
The purpose of this note is twofold: firstly to improve the known results on variation of extreme eigenvalues of birth and death matrices and random walk matrices; and secondly to progress towards the solution of a thirty years old open problem concerning the variation of eigenvalues of these matrices. Keywords: Birth and death matrices, random walk matrices, eigenvalues, monotonicity
Let $ζ= ξ+ iξ'$ where $ξ, ξ'$ are iid copies of a mean zero, variance one, subgaussian random variable. Let $N_n$ be a $n \times n$ random matrix with entries that are iid copies of $ζ$. We prove that there exists a $c \in (0,1)$ such that the probability that $N_n$ has any real eigenvalues is less than $c^n$ where $c$ only depends on the subgaussian moment of $ξ$. The bound is optimal up to the value of the constant $c$. The principal component of the proof is an optimal tail bound on the least singular value of matrices of the form $M_n := M + N_n$ where $M$ is a deterministic complex matrix…
We study linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with Brownian motion entries. We prove that, the centred, normalized linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices obey a central limit theorem (CLT) type result. We also discuss the convergence of linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with independent entries for odd power monomials. Our method is based on trace formula, moment method and some results of process convergence.
We compute the limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edge of the spectrum of large Hermitian random matrices perturbed by the addition of small rank deterministic matrices. To be more precise, we consider random Hermitian matrices with independent Gaussian entries $M_{ij}, i\leq j$ with various expectations. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of such random matrices exhibits, in the large $N$ limit, various limiting distributions depending on both the eigenvalues of the matrix $(\mathbb{E}M_{ij})_{i,j=1}^N$ and its rank.
In this paper, we consider the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of random matrices. Our main result shows that these statistics are determined by the first four moments of the distribution of the entries. As a consequence, we derive the universality of eigenvalue gap distribution and $k$-point correlation and many other statistics (under some mild assumptions) for both Wigner Hermitian matrices and Wigner real symmetric matrices.
This article focuses on linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices with independent entries. Using the convergence of moments we show that the linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices for odd degree monomials with degree greater than or equal to three does not converge in distribution to a Gaussian random variable. This result is a departure from the known results, Liu, Sun and Wang (2012), Kumar and Maurya (2022), of linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices for even degree monomial test functions, where the limits were Gaussian random variables.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for finite-dimensional vectors of linear eigenvalue statistics of submatrices of Wigner random matrices under the assumption that test functions are sufficiently smooth. We connect the asymptotic covariance to a family of correlated Gaussian Free Fields.
We present a novel approach to study eigenvalues of deformed random matrices. This approach applies to many deformed Gaussian matrix models; two such models are studied in detail: the deformed GOE and the spiked population model.
We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and applies localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. Moreover we investigate families of covariance matrices as well.
Large H-selfadjoint random matrices are considered. The matrix $H$ is assumed to have one negative eigenvalue, hence the matrix in question has precisely one eigenvalue of nonpositive type. It is showed that this eigenvalue converges in probability to a deterministic limit. The weak limit of distribution of the real eigenvalues is investigated as well.
Since E.P.Wigner (1958) established his famous semicircle law, lots of attention has been paid by physicists, probabilists and statisticians to study the asymptotic properties of the largest eigenvalues for random matrices. Bai and Yin (1988) obtained the necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong convergence of the extreme eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix. In this paper, we consider the case of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices. We prove the necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong convergence of extreme eigenvalues of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices correspondin…
We analyze the largest eigenvalue statistics of m-dependent heavy-tailed Wigner matrices as well as the associated sample covariance matrices having entry-wise regularly varying tail distributions with parameter $0<α<4$. Our analysis extends results in the previous literature for the corresponding random matrices with independent entries above the diagonal, by allowing for m-dependence between the entries of a given matrix. We prove that the limiting point process of extreme eigenvalues is a Poisson cluster process.
We compute exact asymptotic of the statistical density of random matrices belonging to invariant random matrices ensemble (RMT) orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles, where all its eigenvalues lie within the interval $[σ, +\infty[$ or $]-\infty,τ]$ or $[σ,τ]$. It is found that the density of eigenvalues generically exhibits an inverse square-root singularity at the location of the barriers. These results generalized the case of Gaussian random matrices ensemble studied by Dean-Majumdar.
The purpose of this note is to establish a Central Limit Theorem for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on the correct aymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson, and its extension to large families of Wigner matrices by means of the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin.
We consider a square random matrix of size $N$ of the form $P(Y,A)$ where $P$ is a noncommutative polynomial, $A$ is a tuple of deterministic matrices converging in $\ast$-distribution, when $N$ goes to infinity, towards a tuple $a$ in some $\mathcal{C}^*$-probability space and $Y$ is a tuple of independent matrices with i.i.d. centered entries with variance $1/N$. We investigate the eigenvalues of $P(Y,A)$ outside the spectrum of $P(c,a)$ where $c$ is a circular system which is free from $a$. We provide a sufficient condition to guarantee that these eigenvalues coincide asymptotically with th…
This note presents some central limit theorems for the eigenvalue counting function of Wigner matrices in the form of suitable translations of results by Gustavsson and O'Rourke on the limiting behavior of eigenvalues inside the bulk of the semicircle law for Gaussian matrices. The theorems are then extended to large families of Wigner matrices by the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Similar results are developed for covariance matrices.
