It is known that if one perturbs a large iid random matrix by a bounded rank error, then the majority of the eigenvalues will remain distributed according to the circular law. However, the bounded rank perturbation may also create one or more outlier eigenvalues. We show that if the perturbation is small, then the outlier eigenvalues are created next to the outlier eigenvalues of the bounded rank perturbation; but if the perturbation is large, then many more outliers can be created, and their law is governed by the zeroes of a random Laurent series with Gaussian coefficients. On the other hand, these outliers may be eliminated by enforcing a row sum condition on the final matrix.
It is known that in various random matrix models, large perturbations create outlier eigenvalues which lie, asymptotically, in the complement of the support of the limiting spectral density. This paper is concerned with fluctuations of these outlier eigenvalues of iid matrices $X_n$ under bounded rank and bounded operator norm perturbations $A_n$, namely with $λ(\frac{X_n}{\sqrt{n}}+A_n)-λ(A_n)$. The perturbations we consider are allowed to be of arbitrary Jordan type and have (left and right) eigenvectors satisfying a mild condition. We obtain the joint convergence of the (normalized) asympto…
For fixed positive integers m, we consider the product of m independent n by n random matrices with iid entries as in the limit as n tends to infinity. Under suitable assumptions on the entries of each matrix, it is known that the limiting empirical distribution of the eigenvalues is described by the m-th power of the circular law. Moreover, this same limiting distribution continues to hold if each iid random matrix is additively perturbed by a bounded rank deterministic error. However, the bounded rank perturbations may create one or more outlier eigenvalues. We describe the asymptotic locati…
We study stochastic properties of the norm cocycle associated with iid products of positive matrices. We obtain the almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) with rate o(n 1/p) under the optimal condition of a moment or order p > 2 and the Berry-Esseen theorem with rate O(1/ $\sqrt$ n) under the optimal condition of a moment of order 3. The results are also valid for the matrix norm. For the matrix coefficients, we also have the ASIP but we obtain only partial results for the Berry-Esseen theorem. The proofs make use of coupling coefficients that surprisingly decay exponentially fast to 0 while …
Consider the product $X = X_{1}\cdots X_{m}$ of $m$ independent $n\times n$ iid random matrices. When $m$ is fixed and the dimension $n$ tends to infinity, we prove Gaussian limits for the centered linear spectral statistics of $X$ for analytic test functions. We show that the limiting variance is universal in the sense that it does not depend on $m$ (the number of factor matrices) or on the distribution of the entries of the matrices. The main result generalizes and improves upon previous limit statements for the linear spectral statistics of a single iid matrix by Rider and Silverstein as we…
We consider a square random matrix of size N of the form A + Y where A is deterministic and Y has iid entries with variance 1/N. Under mild assumptions, as N grows, the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues of A+Y converges weakly to a limit probability measure βon the complex plane. This work is devoted to the study of the outlier eigenvalues, i.e. eigenvalues in the complement of the support of β. Even in the simplest cases, a variety of interesting phenomena can occur. As in earlier works, we give a sufficient condition to guarantee that outliers are stable and provide examples where th…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the outliers of the sum a Hermitian random matrix and a finite rank matrix which is not necessarily Hermitian. We observe several possible convergence rates and outliers locating around their limits at the vertices of regular polygons as in a previous work by Benaych-Georges and Rochet, as well as possible correlations between outliers at macroscopic distance as in works by Knowles, Yin, Benaych-Georges and Rochet. We also observe that a single spike can generate several outliers in the spectrum of the deformed model, as already noticed in sev…
We consider a square random matrix of size $N$ of the form $P(Y,A)$ where $P$ is a noncommutative polynomial, $A$ is a tuple of deterministic matrices converging in $\ast$-distribution, when $N$ goes to infinity, towards a tuple $a$ in some $\mathcal{C}^*$-probability space and $Y$ is a tuple of independent matrices with i.i.d. centered entries with variance $1/N$. We investigate the eigenvalues of $P(Y,A)$ outside the spectrum of $P(c,a)$ where $c$ is a circular system which is free from $a$. We provide a sufficient condition to guarantee that these eigenvalues coincide asymptotically with th…
For any family of $N\times N$ random matrices $(\mathbf{A}_k)_{k\in K}$ which is invariant, in law, under unitary conjugation, we give general sufficient conditions for central limit theorems for random variables of the type $\operatorname{Tr}(\mathbf{A}_k \mathbf{M})$, where the matrix $\mathbf{M}$ is deterministic (such random variables include for example the normalized matrix entries of the $\mathbf{A}_k$'s). A consequence is the asymptotic independence of the projection of the matrices $\mathbf{A}_k$ onto the subspace of null trace matrices from their projections onto the orthogonal of th…
In this paper, we investigate the fluctuations of a unit eigenvector associated to an outlier in the spectrum of a spiked $N\times N$ complex Deformed Wigner matrix $M_N$: $M_N =W_N/\sqrt{N} + A_N$ where $W_N$ is an $N \times N$ Hermitian Wigner matrix whose entries have a law $μ$ satisfying a Poincaré inequality and the matrix $A_N$ is a block diagonal matrix, with an eigenvalue $θ$ of multiplicity one, generating an outlier in the spectrum of $M_N$. We prove that the fluctuations of the norm of the projection of a unit eigenvector corresponding to the outlier of $M_N$ onto a unit eigenvector…
We study point process convergence for sequences of iid random walks. The objective is to derive asymptotic theory for the extremes of these random walks. We show convergence of the maximum random walk to the Gumbel distribution under the existence of a $(2+δ)$th moment. We make heavily use of precise large deviation results for sums of iid random variables. As a consequence, we derive the joint convergence of the off-diagonal entries in sample covariance and correlation matrices of a high-dimensional sample whose dimension increases with the sample size. This generalizes known results on the …
We consider products of independent square random non-Hermitian matrices. More precisely, let $n\geq 2$ and let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be independent $N\times N$ random matrices with independent centered entries with variance $N^{-1}$. It was shown by Götze and Tikhomirov and by Soshnikov and O'Rourke that the limit of the empirical spectral distribution of the product $X_1\cdots X_n$ is supported in the unit disk. We prove that if the entries of the matrices $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ satisfy uniform subexponential decay condition, then the spectral radius of $X_1\cdots X_n$ converges to 1 almost surely as $…
We consider an Information-Plus-Noise type matrix where the Information matrix is a spiked matrix. When some eigenvalues of the random matrix separate from the bulk, we study how the corresponding eigenvectors project onto those of the spikes. Note that, in an Appendix, we present alternative versions of the earlier results of Bai and Silverstein about the lack of eigenvalues outside the support of the deterministic equivalent measure and of Capitaine about the exact separation phenomenon, where we remove some technical assumptions.
It is well-known that distances in random iid matrices are highly concentrated around their mean. In this note we extend this concentration phenomenon to Wigner matrices. Exponential bounds for the lower tail are also included.
Let $X^N$ be a family of $N\times N$ independent GUE random matrices, $Z^N$ a family of deterministic matrices, $P$ a self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial, that is for any $N$, $P(X^N)$ is self-adjoint, $f$ a smooth function. We prove that for any $k$, if $f$ is smooth enough, there exist deterministic constants $α_i^P(f,Z^N)$ such that $$ \mathbb{E}\left[\frac{1}{N}\text{Tr}\left( f(P(X^N,Z^N)) \right)\right]\ =\ \sum_{i=0}^k \frac{α_i^P(f,Z^N)}{N^{2i}}\ +\ \mathcal{O}(N^{-2k-2}) .$$ Besides the constants $α_i^P(f,Z^N)$ are built explicitly with the help of free probability. In particular,…
We consider the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of small rank perturbations of random $N\times N$ matrices. We allow the rank of perturbation $M$ increases with $N$, and the only assumption is $M=o(N)$. In both additive and multiplicative perturbation models, we prove rigidity results for the outliers of the perturbed random matrices. Based on the rigidity results we derive the empirical distribution of outliers of the perturbed random matrices. We also compute the appropriate projection of eigenvectors corresponding to the outliers of the perturbed random matrices, which are approximate eigenvec…
We address overcrowding estimates for the singular values of random iid matrices, as well as for the eigenvalues of random Wigner matrices. We show evidence of long range separation under arbitrary perturbation even in matrices of discrete entry distributions. In many cases our method yields nearly optimal bounds
In this paper, we study the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the spiked invariant multiplicative models when the randomness is from Haar matrices. We establish the limits of the outlier eigenvalues $\widehatλ_i$ and the generalized components ($\langle \mathbf{v}, \widehat{\mathbf{u}}_i \rangle$ for any deterministic vector $\mathbb{v}$) of the outlier eigenvectors $\widehat{\mathbf{u}}_i$ with optimal convergence rates. Moreover, we prove that the non-outlier eigenvalues stick with those of the unspiked matrices and the non-outlier eigenvectors are delocalized. The results also hold near the s…
Consider the matrix $Σ_n = n^{-1/2} X_n D_n^{1/2} + P_n$ where the matrix $X_n \in \C^{N\times n}$ has Gaussian standard independent elements, $D_n$ is a deterministic diagonal nonnegative matrix, and $P_n$ is a deterministic matrix with fixed rank. Under some known conditions, the spectral measures of $Σ_n Σ_n^*$ and $n^{-1} X_n D_n X_n^*$ both converge towards a compactly supported probability measure $μ$ as $N,n\to\infty$ with $N/n\to c>0$. In this paper, it is proved that finitely many eigenvalues of $Σ_nΣ_n^*$ may stay away from the support of $μ$ in the large dimensional regime. The exis…
We study the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of random matrices with iid entries. Let $N$ be a random matrix with iid entries which have symmetric distribution. For each unit eigenvector $\mathbf{v}$ of $N$ our main results provide a small ball probability bound for linear combinations of the coordinates of $\mathbf{v}$. Our results generalize the works of Meehan and Nguyen as well as Touri and the second author for random symmetric matrices. Along the way, we provide an optimal estimate of the probability that an iid matrix has simple spectrum, improving a recent result of Ge. Our techniques als…

This text is about spiked models of non Hermitian random matrices. More specifically, we consider matrices of the type $A+P$, where the rank of $P$ stays bounded as the dimension goes to infinity and where the matrix $A$ is a non Hermitian random matrix, satisfying an isotropy hypothesis: its distribution is invariant under the left and right actions of the unitary group. The macroscopic eigenvalue distribution of such matrices is governed by the so called Single Ring Theorem, due to Guionnet, Krishnapur and Zeitouni. We first prove that if $P$ has some eigenvalues out of the maximal circle of…
We consider a class of elliptic random matrices which generalize two classical ensembles from random matrix theory: Wigner matrices and random matrices with iid entries. In particular, we establish a central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of real elliptic random matrices under the assumption that the test functions are analytic. As a corollary, we extend the results of Rider and Silverstein to real iid random matrices.
The maximum correlation of functions of a pair of random variables is an important measure of stochastic dependence. It is known that this maximum nonlinear correlation is identical to the absolute value of the Pearson correlation for a pair of Gaussian random variables or a pair of finite sums of iid random variables. This paper extends these results to pairwise Gaussian vectors and processes, nested sums of iid random variables, and permutation symmetric functions of sub-groups of iid random variables. It also discusses applications to additive regression models.
Let $U^N = (U_1^N,\dots, U^N_p)$ be a d-tuple of $N\times N$ independent Haar unitary matrices and $Z^{NM}$ be any family of deterministic matrices in $\mathbb{M}_N(\mathbb{C})\otimes \mathbb{M}_M(\mathbb{C})$. Let $P$ be a self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial. In 1998, Voiculescu showed that the empirical measure of the eigenvalues of this polynomial evaluated in Haar unitary matrices and deterministic matrices converges towards a deterministic measure defined thanks to free probability theory. Let now $f$ be a smooth function, the main technical result of this paper is a precise bound of …
One can identify a tripartite classification of random matrix ensembles into geometrical universality classes corresponding to the plane, the sphere and the anti-sphere. The plane is identified with Ginibre-type (iid) matrices and the anti-sphere with truncations of unitary matrices. This paper focusses on an ensemble corresponding to the sphere: matrices of the form $\bY= \bA^{-1} \bB$, where $\bA$ and $\bB$ are independent $N\times N$ matrices with iid standard Gaussian real quaternion entries. By applying techniques similar to those used for the analogous complex and real spherical ensemble…
We consider the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices of the form M + P, where M is an n by n Wigner random matrix and P is an arbitrary n by n deterministic matrix with low rank. In general, we show that none of the eigenvalues of M + P need be real, even when P has rank one. We also show that, except for a few outlier eigenvalues, most of the eigenvalues of M + P are within 1/n of the real line, up to small order corrections. We also prove a new result quantifying the outlier eigenvalues for multiplicative perturbations of the form S ( I + P ), where S is a sample covariance matrix and I …
In this paper we study the joint distributional convergence of the largest eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix of a $p$-dimensional time series with iid entries when $p$ converges to infinity together with the sample size $n$. We consider only heavy-tailed time series in the sense that the entries satisfy some regular variation condition which ensures that their fourth moment is infinite. In this case, Soshnikov [31, 32] and Auffinger et al. [2] proved the weak convergence of the point processes of the normalized eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix towards an inhomogeneous Pois…
We study the fluctuations associated to the a.s. convergence, established by Belinschi-Bercovici-Capitaine, of the outliers of an Hermitian polynomial in a complex Wigner matrix and a spiked deterministic real diagonal matrix. Thus, we extend the non universality phenomenon previously established for additive deformations of complex Wigner matrices, to any Hermitian polynomial. The result is described using the operator-valued subordination functions of free probability theory.
We study the asymptotic behavior of outliers in the spectrum of bounded rank perturbations of large random matrices. In particular, we consider perturbations of elliptic random matrices which generalize both Wigner random matrices and non-Hermitian random matrices with iid entries. As a consequence, we recover the results of Capitaine, Donati-Martin, and Féral for perturbed Wigner matrices as well as the results of Tao for perturbed random matrices with iid entries. Along the way, we prove a number of interesting results concerning elliptic random matrices whose entries have finite fourth mome…
We show that the permanent of an $n \times n$ matrix with iid Bernoulli entries $\pm 1$ is of magnitude $n^{({1/2}+o(1))n}$ with probability $1-o(1)$. In particular, it is almost surely non-zero.
We consider multivariate stationary processes $(\boldsymbol{X}_t)$ satisfying a stochastic recurrence equation of the form $$ \boldsymbol{X}_t= \mathbb{ M}_t \boldsymbol{X}_{t-1} + \boldsymbol{Q}_t,$$ where $(\boldsymbol{Q}_t)$ are iid random vectors and $$ \mathbb{M}_t=\mathrm{Diag}(b_1+c_1 M_t, \dots, b_d+c_d M_t) $$ are iid diagonal matrices and $(M_t)$ are iid random variables. We obtain a full characterization of the multivariate regular variation properties of $(\boldsymbol{X}_t)$, proving that coordinates $X_{t,i}$ and $X_{t,j}$ are asymptotically independent even though all coordinates…
We study the distribution of the outliers in the spectrum of finite rank deformations of Wigner random matrices. We assume that the matrix entries have finite fourth moment and extend the results by Capitaine, Donati-Martin, and Féral for perturbations whose eigenvectors are delocalized.
We study the eigenvalue distribution of a GUE matrix with a variance profile that is perturbed by an additive random matrix that may possess spikes. Our approach is guided by Voiculescu's notion of freeness with amalgamation over the diagonal and by the notion of deterministic equivalent. This allows to derive a fixed point equation to approximate the spectral distribution of certain deformed GUE matrices with a variance profile and to characterize the location of potential outliers in such models in a non-asymptotic setting. We also consider the singular values distribution of a rectangular G…
In this paper, we study the effect of sparsity on the appearance of outliers in the semi-circular law. Let $(W_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ be a sequence of random symmetric matrices such that each $W_n$ is $n\times n$ with i.i.d entries above and on the main diagonal equidistributed with the product $b_nξ$, where $ξ$ is a real centered uniformly bounded random variable of unit variance and $b_n$ is an independent Bernoulli random variable with a probability of success $p_n$. Assuming that $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}n p_n=\infty$, we show that for the random sequence $(ρ_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ given by $$ρ_n:=θ_n…
Consider an $N\times N$ Toeplitz matrix $T_N$ with symbol ${a }(λ) := \sum_{\ell=-d_2}^{d_1} a_\ell λ^\ell$, perturbed by an additive noise matrix $N^{-γ} E_N$, where the entries of $E_N$ are centered i.i.d.~random variables of unit variance and $γ>1/2$. It is known that the empirical measure of eigenvalues of the perturbed matrix converges weakly, as $N\to\infty$, to the law of ${a}(U)$, where $U$ is distributed uniformly on $\mathbb{S}^1$. In this paper, we consider the outliers, i.e. eigenvalues that are at a positive ($N$-independent) distance from ${a}(\mathbb{S}^1)$. We prove that there …
The circular law asserts that if $X_n$ is a $n \times n$ matrix with iid complex entries of mean zero and unit variance, then the empirical spectral distribution of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} X_n$ converges almost surely to the uniform distribution on the unit disk as $n$ tends to infinity. Answering a question of Tao, we prove the circular law for a general class of random block matrices with dependent entries. The proof relies on an inverse-type result for the concentration of linear operators and multilinear forms.
We show that a nearly square iid random integral matrix is surjective over the integral lattice with very high probability. This answers a question by Koplewitz. Our result extends to sparse matrices as well as to matrices of dependent entries.
We study the distribution of the outliers in the spectrum of finite rank deformations of Wigner random matrice under the assumption that the off-diagonal matrix entries have uniformly bounded fifth moment and the diagonal entries have uniformly bounded third moment. Using our recent results on the fluctuation of resolvent entries [31],[28], and ideas from [9], we extend results by M.Capitaine, C.Donati-Martin, and D.Féral [12], [13].
We analyze the macroscale behavior of random lower (and therefore upper) triangular matrices with entries drawn iid from a distribution with nonzero mean and finite variance. We show that such a matrix behaves like a probabilistic version of a Riemann sum and therefore in the limit behaves like the Volterra operator. Specifically, we analyze certain SOT-like and WOT-like modes of convergence for random lower triangular matrices to a scaled Volterra operator. We close with a brief discussion of moments.
Suppose that A_1,\dots, A_N are independent random matrices whose atoms are iid copies of a random variable ξof mean zero and variance one. It is known from the works of Newman et. al. in the late 80s that when ξis gaussian then N^{-1} \log ||A_N \dots A_1|| converges to a non-random limit. We extend this result to more general matrices with explicit rate of convergence. Our method relies on a simple connection between structures and dynamics.
In this paper, we consider the addition of two matrices in generic position, namely A + U BU * , where U is drawn under the Haar measure on the unitary or the orthogonal group. We show that, under mild conditions on the empirical spectral measures of the deterministic matrices A and B, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle, in the scale N, with an explicit rate function involving the limit of spherical integrals. We cover in particular all the cases when A and B have no outliers.
We introduce a class of separable sample covariance matrices of the form $\widetilde{\mathcal{Q}}_1:=\widetilde A^{1/2} X \widetilde B X^* \widetilde A^{1/2}.$ Here $\widetilde{A}$ and $\widetilde{B}$ are positive definite matrices whose spectrums consist of bulk spectrums plus several spikes, i.e. larger eigenvalues that are separated from the bulks. Conceptually, we call $\widetilde{\mathcal{Q}}_1$ a \emph{spiked separable covariance matrix model}. On the one hand, this model includes the spiked covariance matrix as a special case with $\widetilde{B}=I$. On the other hand, it allows for more…
Let $ζ= ξ+ iξ'$ where $ξ, ξ'$ are iid copies of a mean zero, variance one, subgaussian random variable. Let $N_n$ be a $n \times n$ random matrix with entries that are iid copies of $ζ$. We prove that there exists a $c \in (0,1)$ such that the probability that $N_n$ has any real eigenvalues is less than $c^n$ where $c$ only depends on the subgaussian moment of $ξ$. The bound is optimal up to the value of the constant $c$. The principal component of the proof is an optimal tail bound on the least singular value of matrices of the form $M_n := M + N_n$ where $M$ is a deterministic complex matrix…
The famous \emph{circular law} asserts that if $M_n$ is an $n \times n$ matrix with iid complex entries of mean zero and unit variance, then the empirical spectral distribution (ESD) of the normalized matrix $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} M_n$ converges almost surely to the uniform distribution on the unit disk $\{z \in \C: |z| \leq 1 \}$. After a long sequence of partial results that verified this law under additional assumptions on the distribution of the entries, the full circular law was recently established in \cite{TVcir2}. In this survey we describe some of the key ingredients used in the establis…
