For a hypergraph $H=(V,\mathcal E)$, a subfamily $\mathcal C\subseteq \mathcal E$ is called a cover of the hypergraph if $\bigcup\mathcal C=\bigcup\mathcal E$. A cover $\mathcal C$ is called minimal if each cover $\mathcal D\subseteq\mathcal C$ of the hypergraph $H$ coincides with $\mathcal C$. We prove that for a hypergraph $H$ the following conditions are equivalent: (i) each countable subhypergraph of $H$ has a minimal cover; (ii) each non-empty subhypergraph of $H$ has a maximal edge; (iii) $H$ contains no isomorphic copy of the hypergraph $(ω,ω)$. This characterization implies that a countable hypergraph $(V,\mathcal E)$ has a minimal cover if every infinite set $I\subseteq V$ contains a finite subset $F\subseteq I$ such that the family of edges $\mathcal E_F:=\{E\in\mathcal E:F\subseteq E\}$ is finite. Also we prove that a hypergraph $(V,\mathcal E)$ has a minimal cover if $\sup\{|E|:E\in\mathcal E\}<ω$ or for every $v\in V$ the family $\mathcal E_v:=\{E\in\mathcal E:v\in E\}$ is finite.
Among all uniform hypergraphs with even uniformity, the odd-transversal or odd-bipartite hypergraphs are more close to bipartite simple graphs from the viewpoint of both structure and spectrum. A hypergraph is called minimal non-odd-transversal if it is non-odd-transversal but deleting any edge results in an odd-transversal hypergraph. In this paper we give an equivalent characterization of the minimal non-odd-transversal hypergraphs by the degrees and the rank of its incidence matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_2$. If a minimal non-odd-transversal hypergraph is uniform, then it has even uniformity, and …
For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ we consider the parameter $Θ(F)$, the minimum size of a clique cover of the of $F$. We derive bounds on $Θ(F)$ for $F$ belonging to various classes of hypergraphs.
We bound the number of minimal hypergraph transversals that arise in tri-partite 3-uniform hypergraphs, a class commonly found in applications dealing with data. Let H be such a hypergraph on a set of vertices V. We give a lower bound of 1.4977 |V | and an upper bound of 1.5012 |V | .
Given a hypergraph H(V;E), a set of vertices S in V is a vertex cover if every edge has at least a vertex in S. The vertex cover number is the minimum cardinality of a vertex cover, denoted by t(H). In this paper, we prove that for every 3 uniform connected hypergraph H(V;E), t(H)<=(2m+1)/3 holds on where m is the number of edges. Furthermore, the equality holds on if and only if H(V;E) is a hypertree with perfect matching.
We give a construction of r-partite r-uniform intersecting hypergraphs with cover number at least r-4 for all but finitely many r. This answers a question of Abu-Khazneh, Barat, Pokrovskiy and Szabo, and shows that a long-standing unsolved conjecture due to Ryser is close to being best possible for every value of r.
For a fixed set of positive integers $R$, we say $\mathcal{H}$ is an $R$-uniform hypergraph, or $R$-graph, if the cardinality of each edge belongs to $R$. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a Berge-$G$, denoted by $BG$, if there exists a bijection $f: E(G) \to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for every $e \in E(G)$, $e \subseteq f(e)$. In this paper, we define a variant of Turán number in hypergraphs, namely the cover Turán number, denoted as $\hat{ex}_R(n, G)$, as the maximum number of edges in the shadow graph of a Berge-$G$ free $R$-graph on $n$ vertices. We show a general…
We construct injective hulls and projective covers in categories of generalized uniform hypergraphs which generalizes the constructions in the category of quivers and the category of undirected graphs. While the constructions are not functorial, they are "sub-functorial", meaning they are subobjects of functorial injective and projective refinements.
How many monochromatic paths, cycles or general trees does one need to cover all vertices of a given $r$-edge-coloured graph $G$? These problems were introduced in the 1960s and were intensively studied by various researchers over the last 50 years. In this paper, we establish a connection between this problem and the following natural Helly-type question in hypergraphs. Roughly speaking, this question asks for the maximum number of vertices needed to cover all the edges of a hypergraph $H$ if it is known that any collection of a few edges of $H$ has a small cover. We obtain quite accurate bou…
We prove that the depth functions of cover ideals of balanced hyper- gragh have the non-increasing property. Furthermore, we also give a bound for the index of depth stability of these ideals.
A d-interval hypergraph has d disjoint copies of the unit interval as its vertex set, and each edge is the union of d subintervals, one on each copy. Extending a classical result of Gallai on the case d = 1, Tardos and Kaiser used topological tools to bound the ratio between the transversal number and the matching number in such hypergraphs. We take a dual point of view, and bound the edge-covering number (namely the minimal number of edges covering the entire vertex set) in terms of a parameter expressing independence of systems of partitions of the d unit intervals. The main tool we use is a…
Let $H=(V,E)$ be a hypergraph. Let $C\subseteq E$, then $C$ is an {\it edge cover}, or a {\it set cover}, if $\cup_{e\in C} \{v|v\in e\}=V$. A subset of vertices $X$ is {\it independent} in $H,$ if no two vertices in $X$ are in any edge. Let $c(H)$ and $α(H)$ denote the cardinalities of a smallest edge cover and largest independent set in $H$, respectively. We show that $c(H)\le {\hat m}(h)c(H)$, where ${\hat m}(H)$ is a parameter called the {\it mighty degeneracy} of $H$. Furthermore, we show that the inequality is tight and demonstrate the applications in domination theory.
In this paper we prove Ahlswede- Khachatrian conjecture~\cite{1} up to finite number of cases, which can be checked using modern computers. From this conjecture follows conjecture from~\cite{2} and Manickam-Miklós-Singhi conjecture. This paper is combined from papers~\cite{09},~\cite{08}.
Let $H$ be an $n$-vertex 3-uniform hypergraph such that every pair of vertices is in at least $n/3+o(n)$ edges. We show that $H$ contains two vertex-disjoint tight paths whose union covers the vertex set of $H$. The quantity two here is best possible and the degree condition is asymptotically best possible. This result also has an interpretation as the \emph{deficiency problems}, recently introduced by Nenadov, Sudakov and Wagner: every such $H$ can be made Hamiltonian by adding at most two vertices and all triples intersecting them.
Let $Π_q$ be an arbitrary finite projective plane of order $q$. A subset $S$ of its points is called saturating if any point outside $S$ is collinear with a pair of points from $S$. Applying probabilistic tools we improve the upper bound on the smallest possible size of the saturating set to $\lceil\sqrt{3q\ln{q}}\rceil+ \lceil(\sqrt{q}+1)/2\rceil$. The same result is presented using an algorithmic approach as well, which points out the connection with the transversal number of uniform multiple intersecting hypergraphs.
Zero forcing is an iterative coloring process on a graph that has been widely used in such different areas as the modelling of propagation phenomena in networks and the study of minimum rank problems in matrices and graphs. This paper deals with zero forcing on hypergraphs. (Representing a network by a hypergraph allows us to account for its community structure and for more general interactions between different subsets of nodes.) We consider two natural generalizations to hypergraphs of zero forcing on graphs (one of them already known) and, for each one of these generalizations we look into …
Given a set $R$, a hypergraph is $R$-uniform if the size of every hyperedge belongs to $R$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called \textit{covering} if every vertex pair is contained in some hyperedge in $\mathcal{H}$. In this note, we show that every covering $[3]$-uniform hypergraph on $n\geq 6$ vertices contains a Berge cycle $C_s$ for any $3\leq s\leq n$. As an application, we determine the maximum Lagrangian of $k$-uniform Berge-$C_{t}$-free hypergraphs and Berge-$P_{t}$-free hypergraphs.
Let $\H$ be a unimodular hypergraph over the vertex set $[n]$ and let $J(\H)$ be the cover ideal of $\H$ in the polynomial ring $R=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. We show that $\reg J(\H)^s$ is a linear function in $s$ for all $s\geqslant r\left\lceil \frac{n}{2}\right\rceil+1$ where $r$ is the rank of $\H$. Moreover for every $i$, $a_i(R/J(\H)^s)$ is also a linear function in $s$ for $s \geqslant n^2$.
We show that for all $\ell, k, n$ with $\ell \leq k/2$ and $(k-\ell)$ dividing $n$ the following hypergraph-variant of Lehel's conjecture is true. Every $2$-edge-colouring of the $k$-uniform complete hypergraph $\mathcal{K}_n^{(k)}$ on $n$ vertices has at most two disjoint monochromatic $\ell$-cycles in different colours that together cover all but at most $4(k-\ell)$ vertices. If $\ell \leq k/3$, then at most two $\ell$-cycles cover all but at most $2(k-\ell)$ vertices. Furthermore, we can cover all vertices with at most $4$ ($3$ if $\ell\leq k/3$) disjoint monochromatic $\ell$-cycles.
A well-known conjecture, often attributed to Ryser, states that the cover number of an $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph is at most $r - 1$ times larger than its matching number. Despite considerable effort, particularly in the intersecting case, this conjecture remains wide open, motivating the pursuit of variants of the original conjecture. Recently, Bustamante and Stein and, independently, Király and Tóthmérész considered the problem under the assumption that the hypergraph is $t$-intersecting, conjecturing that the cover number $τ(\mathcal{H})$ of such a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is at mos…
Let the {\it bicoloring cover number $χ^c(G)$} for a hypergraph $G(V,E)$ be the minimum number of bicolorings of vertices of $G$ such that every hyperedge $e\in E$ of $G$ is properly bicolored in at least one of the $χ^c(G)$ bicolorings. We investigate the relationship between $χ^c(G)$, matchings, hitting sets, $α(G)$(independence number) and $χ(G)$ (chromatic number). We design a factor $O(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n-\log \log \log n})$ approximation algorithm for computing a bicoloring cover. We define a new parameter for hypergraphs - "cover independence number $γ(G)$" and prove that $\log \f…
For a fixed set of positive integers $R$, we say $\mathcal{H}$ is an $R$-uniform hypergraph, or $R$-graph, if the cardinality of each edge belongs to $R$. An $R$-graph $\mathcal{H}$ is \emph{covering} if every vertex pair of $\mathcal{H}$ is contained in some hyperedge. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a \textit{Berge}-$G$, denoted by $BG$, if there exists an injection $f: E(G) \to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for every $e \in E(G)$, $e \subseteq f(e)$. In this note, we define a new type of Ramsey number, namely the \emph{cover Ramsey number}, denoted as $\hat{R}^R(BG_1…
Fractional graph isomorphism is the linear relaxation of an integer programming formulation of graph isomorphism. It preserves some invariants of graphs, like degree sequences and equitable partitions, but it does not preserve others like connectivity, clique and independence numbers, chromatic number, vertex and edge cover numbers, matching number, domination and total domination numbers. In this work, we extend the concept of fractional graph isomorphism to hypergraphs, and give an alternative characterization, analogous to one of those that are known for graphs. With this new concept we pro…
The determinants of $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices are calculated by via the oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and summing over an incidence generalization of vertex cycle-covers. These cycle-covers are signed and partitioned into families based on their hyperedge containment. Every non-edge-monic family is shown to contribute a net value of $0$ to the Laplacian, while each edge-monic family is shown to sum to the absolute value of the determinant of the original incidence matrix. Simple symmetries are identified as well as their relationship to Hadamard's maximum determinant problem. Finally, the entries…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hypergraph on a finite set $V$. A {\em cover} of $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of vertices that meets all edges of $\mathcal{H}$. If $W$ is not a cover of $\mathcal{H}$, then $W$ is said to be a {\em noncover} of $\mathcal{H}$. The {\em noncover complex} of $\mathcal{H}$ is the abstract simplicial complex whose faces are the noncovers of $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we study homological properties of noncover complexes of hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain an upper bound on their Leray numbers. The bound is in terms of hypergraph domination numbers. Also, our proof idea is …
A theorem of Elekes and Szabó recognizes algebraic groups among certain complex algebraic varieties with maximal size intersections with finite grids. We establish a generalization to relations of any arity and dimension, definable in: 1) stable structures with distal expansions (includes algebraically and differentially closed fields of characteristic $0$); and 2) $o$-minimal expansions of groups. Our methods provide explicit bounds on the power saving exponent in the non-group case. Ingredients of the proof include: a higher arity generalization of the abelian group configuration theorem in …
Given two $k$-uniform hypergraphs $F$ and $G$, we say that $G$ has an $F$-covering if every vertex in $G$ is contained in a copy of $F$. For $1\le i \le k-1$, let $c_i(n,F)$ be the least integer such that every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with $δ_i(G)> c_i(n,F)$ has an $F$-covering. The covering problem has been systematically studied by Falgas-Ravry and Zhao [Codegree thresholds for covering 3-uniform hypergraphs, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2016]. Last year, Falgas-Ravry, Markström, and Zhao [Triangle-degrees in graphs and tetrahedron coverings in 3-graphs, Combinatorics, Probability a…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hypergraph of rank $r$. We show that the simplicial complex whose simplices are the hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}\subset\mathcal{H}$ with covering number at most $p$ is $\left(\binom{r+p}{r}-1\right)$-collapsible, and the simplicial complex whose simplices are the pairwise intersecting hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}\subset\mathcal{H}$ is $\frac{1}{2}\binom{2r}{r}$-collapsible.
In this paper a hypergraph will be identified with the family of its edges. A hypergraph $\mathcal E$ possesses property $C(k,ρ)$ iff $|\bigcap \mathcal E'|<ρ$ for each $\mathcal E'\in {[\mathcal E]}^{k}$. A vertex set $Y\subset \bigcup\mathcal E$ is a "vertex cover" of $\mathcal E$ iff $E\cap Y\ne \emptyset$ for each $E\in \mathcal E$. A vertex cover $Y$ is "minimal" iff no proper subset of $Y$ is vertex cover. If $A$ is a set and $S$ is a set of cardinals, write $$ {[A]}^{S}=\{B\subset A: |B|\in S\}. $$ If $λ$ and $ρ$ are cardinals, $S$ is a set of cardinals, $k\in ω$, then we write $$\mathb…
Let $m(n,r)$ denote the minimal number of edges in an $n$-uniform hypergraph which is not $r$-colorable. It is known that for a fixed $n$ one has \[ c_n r^n < m(n,r) < C_n r^n. \] We prove that for any fixed $n$ the sequence $a_r := m(n,r)/r^n$ has a limit, which was conjectured by Alon. We also prove the list colorings analogue of this statement.
