A uniform hypergraph $H$ is called $k$-Ramsey for a hypergraph $F$, if no matter how one colors the edges of $H$ with $k$ colors, there is always a monochromatic copy of $F$. We say that $H$ is minimal $k$-Ramsey for $F$, if $H$ is $k$-Ramsey for $F$ but every proper subhypergraph of $H$ is not. Burr, Erdős and Lovasz studied various parameters of minimal Ramsey graphs. In this paper we initiate the study of minimum degrees and codegrees of minimal Ramsey $3$-uniform hypergraphs. We show that the smallest minimum vertex degree over all minimal $k$-Ramsey $3$-uniform hypergraphs for $K_t^{(3)}$ is exponential in some polynomial in $k$ and $t$. We also study the smallest possible minimum codegrees over minimal $2$-Ramsey $3$-uniform hypergraphs.
Let $C_6^3$ be the 3-uniform hypergraph on $\{1,\dots, 6\}$ with edges $123, 345,561$, which can be seen as the triangle in 3-uniform hypergraphs. For sufficiently large $n$ divisible by 6, we show that every $n$-vertex 3-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree at least $n/3$ contains a $C_6^3$-factor, i.e., a spanning subhypergraph consisting of vertex-disjoint copies of $C_6^3$. The minimum codegree condition is best possible. This improves the asymptotical result obtained by Mycroft and answers a question of Rödl and Ruciński exactly.
For $1\le \ell<k/2$, we show that for sufficiently large $n$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $\frac n{2 (k-\ell)} $ contains a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle. This codegree condition is best possible and improves on work of Hàn and Schacht who proved an asymptotic result.
Determine the size of $r$-graphs with given graph parameters is an interesting problem. Chvátal and Hanson (JCTB, 1976) gave a tight upper bound of the size of 2-graphs with restricted maximum degree and matching number; Khare (DM, 2014) studied the same problem for linear $3$-graphs with restricted matching number and maximum degree. In this paper, we give a tight upper bound of the size of $3$-graphs with bounded codegree and matching number.
Given hypergraphs $F$ and $H$, an $F$-factor in $H$ is a set of vertex-disjoint copies of $F$ which cover all the vertices in $H$. Let $K^- _4$ denote the $3$-uniform hypergraph with $4$ vertices and $3$ edges. We show that for sufficiently large $n\in 4 \mathbb N$, every $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $n/2-1$ contains a $K^- _4$-factor. Our bound on the minimum codegree here is best-possible. It resolves a conjecture of Lo and Markström for large hypergraphs, who earlier proved an asymptotically exact version of this result. Our proof makes use of th…
For a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, define the minimum positive codegree $δ_i^+(\mathcal{H})$ to be the largest integer $k$ such that every $i$-set which is contained in at least one edge of $\mathcal{H}$ is contained in at least $k$ edges. For $1\le s\le k,t$ and $t\le r$, we prove that for $n$-vertex $t$-intersecting $r$-graphs $\mathcal{H}$ with $δ_{r-s}^+(\mathcal{H})>{k-1\choose s}$, the unique hypergraph with the maximum number of edges is the hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ consisting of every edge which intersects a set of size $2k-2s+t$ in at least $k-s+t$ vertices provided $n$ is sufficiently l…
Let $r\ge 3$. Given an $r$-graph $H$, the minimum codegree $δ_{r-1}(H)$ is the largest integer $t$ such that every $(r-1)$-subset of $V(H)$ is contained in at least $t$ edges of $H$. Given an $r$-graph $F$, the codegree Turán density $γ(F)$ is the smallest $γ>0$ such that every $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with $δ_{r-1}(H)\ge (γ+ o(1))n$ contains $F$ as a subhypergraph. Using results on the independence number of hypergraphs, we show that there are constants $c_1, c_2>0$ depending only on $r$ such that \[ 1 - c_2 \frac{\ln t}{t^{r-1}} \le γ(K_t^r) \le 1 - c_1 \frac{\ln t}{t^{r-1}}, \] where $K_t^…
Given hypergraphs H and F, an F-factor in H is a spanning subgraph consisting of vertex disjoint copies of F. Let K_4^3-e denote the 3-uniform hypergraph on 4 vertices with 3 edges. We show that for γ>0 there exists an integer n_0 such that every 3-uniform hypergraph $H$ of order n > n_0 with minimum codegree at least (1/2+γ)n and 4|n contains a (K_4^3-e)-factor. Moreover, this bound is asymptotically the best possible and we further give a conjecture on the exact value of the threshold for the existence of a (K_4^3-e)-factor. Therefore, all minimum codegree thresholds for the existence of F-f…
Given two 3-uniform hypergraphs F and G, we say that G has an F-covering if we can cover V(G) by copies of F. The minimum codegree of G is the largest integer d such that every pair of vertices from V(G) is contained in at least d triples from E(G). Define c_2(n,F) to be the largest minimum codegree among all n-vertex 3-graphs G that contain no F-covering. This is a natural problem intermediate (but distinct) from the well-studied Turán problems and tiling problems. In this paper, we determine c_2(n, K_4) (for n>98) and the associated extremal configurations (for n>998), where K_4 denotes the …
We study sufficient conditions for the existence of Hamilton cycles in uniformly dense $3$-uniform hypergraphs. Problems of this type were first considered by Lenz, Mubayi, and Mycroft for loose Hamilton cycles and Aigner-Horev and Levy considered it for tight Hamilton cycles for a fairly strong notion of uniformly dense hypergraphs. We focus on tight cycles and obtain optimal results for a weaker notion of uniformly dense hypergraphs. We show that if an $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ has the property that for any set of vertices $X$ and for any collection $P$ of pairs of vertices…
Given $k\ge 2$ and two $k$-graphs ($k$-uniform hypergraphs) $F$ and $H$, an \emph{$F$-factor} in $H$ is a set of vertex disjoint copies of $F$ that together covers the vertex set of $H$. Lenz and Mubayi studied the $F$-factor problems in quasi-random $k$-graphs with minimum degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$. In particular, they constructed a sequence of $1/8$-dense quasi-random $3$-graphs $H(n)$ with minimum degree $Ω(n^2)$ and minimum codegree $Ω(n)$ but with no $K_{2,2,2}$-factor. We prove that if $p>1/8$ and $F$ is a $3$-partite $3$-graph with $f$ vertices, then for sufficiently large $n$, all $p$-dense …
Turán's famous tetrahedron problem is to compute the Turán density of the tetrahedron $K_4^3$. This is equivalent to determining the maximum $\ell_1$-norm of the codegree vector of a $K_4^3$-free $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph. We introduce a new way for measuring extremality of hypergraphs and determine asymptotically the extremal function of the tetrahedron in our notion. The codegree squared sum, $\text{co}_2(G)$, of a $3$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is the sum of codegrees squared $d(x,y)^2$ over all pairs of vertices $xy$, or in other words, the square of the $\ell_2$-norm of the codegree v…
Given two $k$-uniform hypergraphs $F$ and $G$, we say that $G$ has an $F$-covering if every vertex in $G$ is contained in a copy of $F$. For $1\le i \le k-1$, let $c_i(n,F)$ be the least integer such that every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with $δ_i(G)> c_i(n,F)$ has an $F$-covering. The covering problem has been systematically studied by Falgas-Ravry and Zhao [Codegree thresholds for covering 3-uniform hypergraphs, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2016]. Last year, Falgas-Ravry, Markström, and Zhao [Triangle-degrees in graphs and tetrahedron coverings in 3-graphs, Combinatorics, Probability a…
For any $γ>0$, Keevash, Knox and Mycroft constructed a polynomial-time algorithm to determine the existence of perfect matchings in any $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph whose minimum codegree is at least $n/k+γn$. We prove a structure theorem that enables us to determine the existence of a perfect matching for any $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least $n/k$. This solves a problem of Karpiński, Ruciński and Szymańska completely. Our proof uses a lattice-based absorbing method.
In this paper we study some variants of Dirac-type problems in hypergraphs. First, we show that for $k\ge 3$, if $H$ is a $k$-graph on $n\in k\mathbb N$ vertices with independence number at most $n/p$ and minimum codegree at least $(1/p+o(1))n$, where $p$ is the smallest prime factor of $k$, then $H$ contains a perfect matching. Second, we show that if $H$ is a $3$-graph on $n\in 3\mathbb N$ vertices which does not contain any induced copy of $K_4^-$ (the unique $3$-graph with $4$ vertices and $3$ edges) and has minimum codegree at least $(1/3+o(1)))n$, then $H$ contains a perfect matching. Mo…
Ramsey, Erdos-Rado, and Conlon-Fox-Sudakov have given proofs of the 3-hypergraph Ramsey Theorem with better and better upper bounds on the 3-hypergraph Ramsey Number. Ramsey and Erdos-Rado also prove the a-hypergraph Ramsey Theorem. Conlon-Fox-Sudakov note that their upper bounds on the 3-hypergraph Ramsey Numbers, together with a recurrence of Erdos-Rado (which was the key to the Erdos-Rado proof), yield improved bounds on the a-hypergraph Ramsey numbers. We present all of these proofs and state explicit bounds for the 2-color case and the c-color case. We give a more detailed analysis of the…
Let $H$ be a $k$-graph on $n$ vertices, with minimum codegree at least $n/k + cn$ for some fixed $c > 0$. In this paper we construct a polynomial-time algorithm which finds either a perfect matching in $H$ or a certificate that none exists. This essentially solves a problem of Karpiński, Ruciński and Szymańska; Szymańska previously showed that this problem is NP-hard for a minimum codegree of $n/k - cn$. Our algorithm relies on a theoretical result of independent interest, in which we characterise any such hypergraph with no perfect matching using a family of lattice-based constructions.

The size-Ramsey number of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges in a graph $H$ such that every 2-edge-coloring of $H$ yields a monochromatic copy of $G$. Size-Ramsey numbers of graphs have been studied for almost 40 years with particular focus on the case of trees and bounded degree graphs. We initiate the study of size-Ramsey numbers for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Analogous to the graph case, we consider the size-Ramsey number of cliques, paths, trees, and bounded degree hypergraphs. Our results suggest that size-Ramsey numbers for hypergraphs are extremely difficult to determine, and many…
Much recent progress in hypergraph Ramsey theory has focused on constructions that lead to lower bounds for the corresponding Ramsey numbers. In this paper, we consider applications of these results to Gallai colorings. That is, we focus on the Ramsey numbers resulting from only considering $t$-colorings of the hyperedges of complete $r$-uniform hypergraphs in which no rainbow $K_{r+1}^{(r)}$-subhypergraphs exists. We also provide new constructions which imply improved lower bounds for many $3$ and $4$-uniform Ramsey numbers and $3$ and $4$-uniform Gallai-Ramsey numbers.
We generalize the Harary-Sachs theorem to $k$-uniform hypergraphs: the codegree-$d$ coefficient of the characteristic polynomial of a uniform hypergraph ${\cal H}$ can be expressed as a weighted sum of subgraph counts over certain multi-hypergraphs with $d$ edges. We include a detailed description of the aforementioned multi-hypergraphs and a formula for their corresponding weights.
The anti-Ramsey problem was introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1970s. The anti-Ramsey number of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, $ar(n,s, \mathcal{H})$, is the smallest integer $c$ such that in any coloring of the edges of the $s$-uniform complete hypergraph on $n$ vertices with exactly $c$ colors, there is a copy of $\mathcal{H}$ whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers of linear paths and loose paths in hypergraphs for sufficiently large $n$, and give bounds for the anti-Ramsey numbers of Berge paths. Similar exact anti-Ramsey numbers are obtai…
We improve upon the lower bound for 3-colour hypergraph Ramsey numbers, showing, in the 3-uniform case, that \[r_3 (l,l,l) \geq 2^{l^{c \log \log l}}.\] The old bound, due to Erdős and Hajnal, was \[r_3 (l,l,l) \geq 2^{c l^2 \log^2 l}.\]
Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter proved that the Ramsey numbers of graphs of bounded maximum degree are linear in their order. We prove that the same holds for 3-uniform hypergraphs. The main new tool which we prove and use is an embedding lemma for 3-uniform hypergraphs of bounded maximum degree into suitable 3-uniform `pseudo-random' hypergraphs.
The classical hypergraph Ramsey number $r_k(s,n)$ is the minimum $N$ such that for every red-blue coloring of the $k$-tuples of $\{1,\ldots, N\}$, there are $s$ integers such that every $k$-tuple among them is red, or $n$ integers such that every $k$-tuple among them is blue. We survey a variety of problems and results in hypergraph Ramsey theory that have grown out of understanding the quantitative aspects of $r_k(s,n)$. Our focus is on recent developments and open problems.
Chvatal, Roedl, Szemeredi and Trotter proved that the Ramsey numbers of graphs of bounded maximum degree are linear in their order. In previous work, we proved the same result for 3-uniform hypergraphs. Here we extend this result to k-uniform hypergraphs, for any integer k > 3. As in the 3-uniform case, the main new tool which we prove and use is an embedding lemma for k-uniform hypergraphs of bounded maximum degree into suitable k-uniform `quasi-random' hypergraphs.
In 1991, McKay and Radziszowski proved that, however each 3-subset of a 13-set is assigned one of two colours, there is some 4-subset whose four 3-subsets have the same colour. More than 25 years later, this remains the only non-trivial classical Ramsey number known for hypergraphs. In this article, we find all the extremal colourings of the 3-subsets of a 12-set and list some of their properties. Using the catalogue, we provide an answer to a question of Dudek, Fleur, Mubayi and Rödl about the size-Ramsey numbers of hypergraphs.
Given $3 \leq k \leq s$, we say that a $k$-uniform hypergraph $C^k_s$ is a tight cycle on $s$ vertices if there is a cyclic ordering of the vertices of $C^k_s$ such that every $k$ consecutive vertices under this ordering form an edge. We prove that if $k \ge 3$ and $s \ge 2k^2$, then every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $(1/2 + o(1))n$ has the property that every vertex is covered by a copy of $C^k_s$. Our result is asymptotically best possible for infinitely many pairs of $s$ and $k$, e.g. when $s$ and $k$ are coprime. A perfect $C^k_s$-tiling is a spann…
The $s$-colour size-Ramsey number of a hypergraph $H$ is the minimum number of edges in a hypergraph $G$ whose every $s$-edge-colouring contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. We show that the $s$-colour size-Ramsey number of the $t$-power of the $r$-uniform tight path on $n$ vertices is linear in $n$, for every fixed $r, s, t$, thus answering a question of Dudek, La Fleur, Mubayi, and Rödl (2017). In fact, we prove a stronger result that allows us to deduce that powers of bounded degree hypergraph trees and powers of `long subdivisions' of bounded degree hypergraphs have size-Ramsey numbers tha…
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a Berge-$G$, denoted by $BG$, if there exists a bijection $f: E(G) \to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for every $e \in E(G)$, $e \subseteq f(e)$. Let the Ramsey number $R^r(BG,BG)$ be the smallest integer $n$ such that for any $2$-edge-coloring of a complete $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, there is a monochromatic Berge-$G$ subhypergraph. In this paper, we show that the 2-color Ramsey number of Berge cliques is linear. In particular, we show that $R^3(BK_s, BK_t) = s+t-3$ for $s,t \geq 4$ and $\max(s,t) \geq 5$ where $BK_n$ is a Be…
Recently, asymptotic values of 2-color Ramsey numbers for loose cycles and also loose paths were determined. Here we determine the 2-color Ramsey number of 3-uniform loose paths when one of the paths is significantly larger than the other: for every $n\geq \Big\lfloor\frac{5m}{4}\Big\rfloor$, we show that $$R(\mathcal{P}^3_n,\mathcal{P}^3_m)=2n+\Big\lfloor\frac{m+1}{2}\Big\rfloor.$$
We consider a robust variant of Dirac-type problems in $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For instance, we prove that if $H$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least $(1/2 + γ)n$, $γ>0$, and $n$ is sufficiently large, then any edge coloring $ϕ$ satisfying appropriate local constraints yields a properly colored tight Hamilton cycle in $H$. Similar results for loose cycles are also shown.
Let $K_m^{(3)}$ denote the complete $3$-uniform hypergraph on $m$ vertices and $S_n^{(3)}$ the $3$-uniform hypergraph on $n+1$ vertices consisting of all $\binom{n}{2}$ edges incident to a given vertex. Whereas many hypergraph Ramsey numbers grow either at most polynomially or at least exponentially, we show that the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(K_{4}^{(3)},S_n^{(3)})$ exhibits an unusual intermediate growth rate, namely, \[ 2^{c \log^2 n} \le r(K_{4}^{(3)},S_n^{(3)}) \le 2^{c' n^{2/3}\log n} \] for some positive constants $c$ and $c'$. The proof of these bounds brings in a novel Ramsey probl…
We show that there is an absolute constant $c>0$ such that the following holds. For every $n > 1$, there is a 5-uniform hypergraph on at least $2^{2^{cn^{1/4}}}$ vertices with independence number at most $n$, where every set of 6 vertices induces at most 3 edges. The double exponential growth rate for the number of vertices is sharp. By applying a stepping-up lemma established by the first two authors, analogous sharp results are proved for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. This answers the penultimate open case of a conjecture in Ramsey theory posed by Erdős and Hajnal in 1972.
Let $G$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph. When is it possible to orient the edges of $G$ in such a way that every $p$-set of vertices has some $p$-degree equal to $0$? (The $p$-degrees generalise for sets of vertices what in-degree and out-degree are for single vertices in directed graphs.) Caro and Hansberg asked if the obvious Hall-type necessary condition is also sufficient. Our main aim is to show that this is true for $r$ large (for given $p$), but false in general. Our counterexample is based on a new technique in sparse Ramsey theory that may be of independent interest.
The family $D(k,m)$ of graphs having an orientation such that for every vertex $v \in V(G)$ either (outdegree) $°^+(v) \le k$ or (indegree) $°^-(v) \le m$ have been investigated recently in several papers because of the role $D(k,m)$ plays in the efforts to estimate the maximum directed cut in digraphs and the minimum cover of digraphs by directed cuts. Results concerning the chromatic number of graphs in the family $D(k,m)$ have been obtained via the notion of $d$-degeneracy of graphs. In this paper we consider a far reaching generalization of the family $D(k,m)$, in a complementary form, int…
We establish a precise characterisation of $4$-uniform hypergraphs with minimum codegree close to $n/2$ which contain a Hamilton $2$-cycle. As an immediate corollary we identify the exact Dirac threshold for Hamilton $2$-cycles in $4$-uniform hypergraphs. Moreover, by derandomising the proof of our characterisation we provide a polynomial-time algorithm which, given a $4$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree close to $n/2$, either finds a Hamilton $2$-cycle in $H$ or provides a certificate that no such cycle exists. This surprising result stands in contrast to the graph setting, in whi…
An edge-colored hypergraph is rainbow if all of its edges have different colors. Given two hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$, the anti-Ramsey number $ar(\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{H})$ of $\mathcal{H}$ in $\mathcal{G}$ is the maximum number of colors needed to color the edges of $\mathcal{G}$ so that there does not exist a rainbow copy of $\mathcal{H}$. Li et al. determined the anti-Ramsey number of $k$-matchings in complete bipartite graphs. Jin and Zang showed the uniqueness of the extremal coloring. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbe…
We give a short proof that any k-uniform hypergraph H on n vertices with bounded degree Δhas Ramsey number at most c(Δ, k)n, for an appropriate constant c(Δ, k). This result was recently proved by several authors, but those proofs are all based on applications of the hypergraph regularity method. Here we give a much simpler, self-contained proof which uses new techniques developed recently by the authors together with an argument of Kostochka and Rödl. Moreover, our method demonstrates that, for k \geq 4, c(Δ, k) \leq 2^{2^{\Ddots^{2^{c Δ}}}}, where the tower is of height k and the constant c …
