Given an open set with finite perimeter $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, we consider the space $LD_γ^{p}(Ω)$, $1\leq p<\infty$, of functions with $p$th-integrable deformation tensor on $Ω$ and with $p$ th-integrable trace value on the essential boundary of $Ω$. We establish the continuous embedding $LD_γ^{p}(Ω)\subset L^{pN/(N-1)}(Ω)$. The space $LD_γ^{p}(Ω)$ and this embedding arise naturally in studying the motion of rigid bodies in a viscous, incompressible fluid.
In this paper, we prove an upper bound for the first Robin eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian with a positive boundary parameter and a quantitative version of the reverse Faber-Krahn type inequality for the first Robin eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian with negative boundary parameter, among convex sets with prescribed perimeter. The proofs are based on a comparison argument obtained by means of inner sets, introduced by Payne, Weimberger and Polya.
The overarching goal of this paper is to link the notion of sets of finite perimeter (a concept associated with $N^{1,1}$-spaces) and the theory of heat semigroups (a concept related to $N^{1,2}$-spaces) in the setting of metric measure spaces whose measure is doubling and supports a $1$-Poincaré inequality. We prove a characterization of sets of finite perimeter in terms of a short time behavior of the heat semigroup in such metric spaces. We also give a new characterization of ${\rm BV}$ functions in terms of a near-diagonal energy in this general setting.
In the first part of this paper we show that a set $E$ has locally finite $s$-perimeter if and only if it can be approximated in an appropriate sense by smooth open sets. In the second part we prove some elementary properties of local and global $s$-minimal sets, such as existence and compactness. We also compare the two notions of minimizer (i.e. local and global), showing that in bounded open sets with Lipschitz boundary they coincide. However, in general this is not true in unbounded open sets, where a global $s$-minimal set may fail to exist (we provide an example in the case of a cylinder…
This Master's thesis presents a study of the basic properties of the s-fractional perimeter and of the regularity theory of the corresponding s-minimal sets. In particular, we give full detailed proofs for all the Theorems contained in the article "Nonlocal Minimal Surfaces" by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre and Savin, where these s-minimal sets were introduced and studied for the first time.
In this paper, we prove that for any bounded set of finite perimeter $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, we can choose smooth sets $E_k \Subset Ω$ such that $E_k \rightarrow Ω$ in $L^1$ and \begin{align} \label{moregeneralapproximation} \limsup_{i \rightarrow \infty} P(E_i) \le P(Ω)+C_1(n) \mathscr{H}^{n-1}(\partial Ω\cap Ω^1). \end{align}In the above $Ω^1$ is the measure-theoretic interior of $Ω$, $P(\cdot)$ denotes the perimeter functional on sets, and $C_1(n)$ is a dimensional constant. Conversely, we prove that for any sets $E_k \Subset Ω$ satisfying $E_k \rightarrow Ω$ in $L^1$, there exists a dimen…
Given an elliptic integrand of class $ \mathscr{C}^{3} $, we prove that finite unions of disjoint open Wulff shapes with equal radii are the only volume-constrained critical points of the anisotropic surface energy among all sets with finite perimeter and reduced boundary almost equal to its closure.
Following \cite{Visintin}, we exploit the fractional perimeter of a set to give a definition of fractal dimension for its measure theoretic boundary. We calculate the fractal dimension of sets which can be defined in a recursive way and we give some examples of this kind of sets, explaining how to construct them starting from well known self-similar fractals. In particular, we show that in the case of the von Koch snowflake $S\subset\mathbb R^2$ this fractal dimension coincides with the Minkowski dimension, namely \begin{equation*} P_s(S)<\infty\qquad\Longleftrightarrow\qquad s\in\Big(0,2-\fra…
We analyze a class of weakly differentiable vector fields (\FF \colon \rn \to \rn) with the property that (\FF\in L^{\infty}) and (÷\FF) is a Radon measure. The primary focus of our investigation is to introduce a suitable notion of the normal trace of any divergence-measure field $\FF$ over the boundary of an arbitrary set of finite perimeter, which ensures the validity of the Gauss-Green theorem. To achieve this, we establish a fundamental approximation theorem which states that, given a Radon measure $μ$ that is absolutely continuous with respect to $\mathcal{H}^{N-1}$ on $\rn$, any set of …
We study a measure-theoretic notion of connectedness for sets of finite perimeter in the setting of doubling metric measure spaces supporting a weak $(1,1)$-Poincaré inequality. The two main results we obtain are a decomposition theorem into indecomposable sets and a characterisation of extreme points in the space of BV functions. In both cases, the proof we propose requires an additional assumption on the space, which is called isotropicity and concerns the Hausdorff-type representation of the perimeter measure.
It is a well known fact that in $\mathbb{R}^n$ a subset of minimal perimeter $L$ among all sets of a given volume is also a set of maximal volume among all sets of the same perimeter $L$. This is called the reciprocity principle for isoperimetric problems. The aim of this note is to prove this relation in the case where the class of admissible sets is restricted to the subsets of some subregion $G\subsetneq\mathbb{R}^n$. Furthermore, we give a characterization of those (unbounded) convex subsets of $\mathbb{R}^2$ in which the isoperimetric problem has a solution. The perimeter that we consider…
We deal with the asymptotic behavior of the $s$-perimeter of a set $E$ inside a domain $Ω$ as $s\searrow0$. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such limit, by also providing an explicit formulation in terms of the Lebesgue measure of $E$ and $Ω$. Moreover, we construct examples of sets for which the limit does not exist.
We consider sets of locally finite perimeter in Carnot groups. We show that if E is a set of locally finite perimeter in a Carnot group G, then for almost every x in G with respect to the perimeter measure of E, some tangent of E at x is a vertical halfspace. This is a partial extension of a theorem of Franchi-Serapioni-Serra Cassano in step 2 Carnot groups: they have shown that, for almost every x, E has a unique tangent at x, and this tangent is a vertical halfspace.
We consider the evolution of sets by nonlocal mean curvature and we discuss the preservation along the flow of two geometric properties, which are the mean convexity and the outward minimality. The main tools in our analysis are the level set formulation and the minimizing movement scheme for the nonlocal flow. When the initial set is outward minimizing, we also show the convergence of the (time integrated) nonlocal perimeters of the discrete evolutions to the nonlocal perimeter of the limit flow.
We show the existence of generalized clusters of a finite or even infinite number of sets, with minimal total perimeter and given total masses, in metric measure spaces homogeneous with respect to a group acting by measure preserving homeomorphisms, for a quite wide range of perimeter functionals. Such generalized clusters are a natural "relaxed'' version of a cluster and can be thought of as ``albums'' with possibly infinite pages, having a minimal cluster drawn on each page, the total perimeter and the vector of masses being calculated by summation over all pages, the total perimeter being m…
We study the optimal conditions on a homeomorphism $f:Ω\subset \R^n\to \R^n$ to guarantee that the composition $u\circ f$ belongs to the space of functions of bounded variation for every function $u$ of bounded variation. We show that a sufficient and necessary condition is the existence of a constant $K$ such that $|Df|(f^{-1}(A))\leq K\Ln(A)$ for all Borel sets $A$. We also characterize homeomorphisms which maps sets of finite perimeter to sets of finite perimeter. Towards these results we study when $f^{-1}$ maps sets of measure zero onto sets of measure zero (i.e. $f$ satisfies the Lusin $…
For nonnegative even kernels $K$, we consider the $K$-nonlocal perimeter functional acting on sets. Assuming the existence of a foliation of space made of solutions of the associated $K$-nonlocal mean curvature equation in an open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, we built a calibration for the nonlocal perimeter inside $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. The calibrating functional is a nonlocal null-Lagrangian. As a consequence, we conclude the minimality in $Ω$ of each leaf of the foliation. As an application, we prove the minimality of $K$-nonlocal minimal graphs and that they are the unique minimizers subje…
We prove that if the given compact set $K$ is convex then a minimizer of the functional $$ I(v)=\int_{B_R} |\nabla v|^p dx+\text{Per}(\{v>0\}),\,1<p<\infty, $$ over the set $\{v\in H^1_0(B_R)|\,\, v\equiv 1\,\,\text{on}\,\, K\subset B_R\}$ has a convex support, and as a result all its level sets are convex as well. We derive the free boundary condition for the minimizers and prove that the free boundary is analytic and the minimizer is unique.
We establish quantitative properties of minimizers and stable sets for nonlocal interaction functionals, including the $s$-fractional perimeter as a particular case. On the one hand, we establish universal $BV$-estimates in every dimension $n\ge 2$ for stable sets. Namely, we prove that any stable set in $B_1$ has finite classical perimeter in $B_{1/2}$, with a universal bound. This nonlocal result is new even in the case of $s$-perimeters and its local counterpart (for classical stable minimal surfaces) was known only for simply connected two-dimensional surfaces immersed in $\mathbb R^3$. On…
We construct two minimal Cheeger sets in the Euclidean plane, i.e. unique minimizers of the ratio "perimeter over area" among their own measurable subsets. The first one gives a counterexample to the so-called weak regularity property of Cheeger sets, as its perimeter does not coincide with the $1$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of its topological boundary. The second one is a kind of porous set, whose boundary is not locally a graph at many of its points, yet it is a weakly regular open set admitting a unique (up to vertical translations) non--parametric solution to the prescribed mean curvatu…
This doctoral thesis is devoted to the analysis of some minimization problems that involve nonlocal functionals. We are mainly concerned with the $s$-fractional perimeter and its minimizers, the $s$-minimal sets. We investigate the behavior of sets having (locally) finite fractional perimeter and we establish existence and compactness results for (locally) $s$-minimal sets. We study the $s$-minimal sets in highly nonlocal regimes, that correspond to small values of the fractional parameter $s$. We introduce a functional framework for studying those $s$-minimal sets that can be globally written…

We study the localization of sets with constant nonlocal mean curvature and prescribed small volume in a bounded open set with smooth boundary, proving that they are {\em sufficiently close} to critical points of a suitable non-local potential. We then consider the fractional perimeter in half-spaces. We prove the existence of a minimizer under fixed volume constraint, showing some of its properties such as smoothness and symmetry, being a graph in the $x_N$-direction, and characterizing its intersection with the hyperplane $\{x_N=0\}$.
The goal of this work is to analyze a model for the rate-independent evolution of sets with finite perimeter. The evolution of the admissible sets is driven by that of a given time-dependent set, which has to include the admissible sets and hence is to be understood as an external loading. The process is driven by the competition between perimeter minimization and minimization of volume changes. \par In the mathematical modeling of this process, we distinguish the adhesive case, in which the constraint that the (complement of) the `external load' contains the evolving sets is penalized by a te…
The aim of this paper is threefold. We first prove that, on $\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces, the boundary measure of any set with finite perimeter is concentrated on the $n$-regular set $\mathcal{R}_n$, where $n\le N$ is the essential dimension of the space. After, we discuss localization properties of the unit normal providing representation formulae for the perimeter measure of intersections and unions of sets with finite perimeter. Finally, we study Gauss-Green formulae for essentially bounded divergence measure vector fields, sharpening the analysis in \cite{BuffaComiMiranda19}.\\ These tools a…
In this paper we provide two different characterizations of sets with finite perimeter and functions of bounded variation in Carnot groups, analogous to those which hold in Euclidean spaces, in terms of the short-time behaviour of the heat semigroup. The second one holds under the hypothesis that the reduced boundary of a set of finite perimeter is rectifiable, a result that presently is known in Step 2 Carnot groups.
We consider sets in $\mathbb R^N$ which minimise, for fixed volume, the sum of the perimeter and a non-local term given by the double integral of a kernel $g:\mathbb R^N\setminus\{0\}\to \mathbb R^+$. We establish some general existence and regularity results for minimisers. In the two-dimensional case we show that balls are the unique minimisers if the perimeter-dominated regime, for a wide class of functions $g$.
On a convex set, we prove that the Poincaré-Sobolev constant for functions vanishing at the boundary can be bounded from above by the ratio between the perimeter and a suitable power of the $N-$dimensional measure. This generalizes an old result by Pólya. As a consequence, we obtain the sharp {\it Buser's inequality} (or reverse Cheeger inequality) for the $p-$Laplacian on convex sets. This is valid in every dimension and for every $1<p<+\infty$. We also highlight the appearing of a subtle phenomenon in shape optimization, as the integrability exponent varies.
In tis paper we prove an isoperimetric inequality for the first twisted eigenvalue $λ_{1,γ}^T(Ω)$ of a weighted operator, defined as the minimum of the usual Rayleigh quotient when the trial functions belong to the weighted Sobolev space $H_0^1(Ω,dγ)$ and have weighted mean value equal to zero in $Ω$. We are interested in positive measures $dγ=γ(x) dx$ for which we are able to identify the isoperimetric sets, namely, the sets that minimize $λ_{1,γ}^T(Ω)$ among sets of given weighted measure. In the cases under consideration, the optimal sets are given by two identical and disjoint copies of th…
Motivated by the control of invasive biological populations, we consider a class of optimization problems for moving sets $t\mapsto Ω(t)\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. Given an initial set $Ω_0$, the goal is to minimize the area of the contaminated set $Ω(t)$ over time, plus a cost related to the control effort. Here the control function is the inward normal speed along the boundary $\partial Ω(t)$. We prove the existence of optimal solutions, within a class of sets with finite perimeter. Necessary conditions for optimality are then derived, in the form of a Pontryagin maximum principle. Additional opti…
We present a Korn-type inequality in a planar setting for special functions of bounded deformation. We prove that for each function in SBD$^2$ with sufficiently small jump set the distance of the function and its derivative from an infinitesimal rigid motion can be controlled in terms of the linearized elastic strain outside of a small exceptional set of finite perimeter. Particularly the result shows that each function in SBD$^2$ has bounded variation away from an arbitrarily small part of the domain.
We analyze subsets of Carnot groups that have intrinsic constant normal, as they appear in the blowup study of sets that have finite sub-Riemannian perimeter. The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, we prove some mild regularity and structural results in arbitrary Carnot groups. Namely, we show that for every constant-normal set in a Carnot group its sub-Riemannian-Lebesgue representative is regularly open, contractible, and its topological boundary coincides with the reduced boundary and with the measure-theoretic boundary. We infer these properties from a cone property. Such a cone wi…
We consider the problem of geometric optimisation of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in the exterior of a compact set in any dimension, subject to attractive Robin boundary conditions. As an improvement upon our previous work (arXiv:1608.04896, to appear in J. Convex Anal.), we show that under either a constraint of fixed perimeter or area, the maximiser within the class of exteriors of simply connected planar sets is always the exterior of a disk, without the need of convexity assumption. Moreover, we generalise the result to disconnected compact planar sets. Namely, we prove that unde…
