A Korn-type inequality in SBD for functions with small jump sets

We present a Korn-type inequality in a planar setting for special functions of bounded deformation. We prove that for each function in SBD$^2$ with sufficiently small jump set the distance of the function and its derivative from an infinitesimal rigid motion can be controlled in terms of the linearized elastic strain outside of a small exceptional set of finite perimeter. Particularly the result shows that each function in SBD$^2$ has bounded variation away from an arbitrarily small part of the domain.

A Korn-Poincaré-type inequality for special functions of bounded deformation

We present a Korn-Poincaré-type inequality in a planar setting which is in the spirit of the Poincaré inequality in SBV due to De Giorgi, Carriero, Leaci. We show that for each function in SBD$^2$ one can find a modification which differs from the original displacement field only on a small set such that the distance of the modification from a suitable infinitesimal rigid motion can be controlled by an appropriate combination of the elastic and the surface energy. In particular, the result can be used to obtain compactness estimates for functions of bounded deformation.

Integral representation for functionals defined on $SBD^p$ in dimension two

We prove an integral representation result for functionals with growth conditions which give coercivity on the space $SBD^p(Ω)$, for $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. The space $SBD^p$ of functions whose distributional strain is the sum of an $L^p$ part and a bounded measure supported on a set of finite $\mathcal{H}^{1}$-dimensional measure appears naturally in the study of fracture and damage models. Our result is based on the construction of a local approximation by $W^{1,p}$ functions. We also obtain a generalization of Korn's inequality in the $SBD^p$ setting.

A quantitative geometric rigidity result in SBD

We present a quantitative geometric rigidity estimate for special functions of bounded deformation in a planar setting generalizing the result by Friesecke, James, Müller obtained in nonlinear elasticity theory and the piecewise rigidity result by Chambolle, Giacomini, Ponsiglione for brittle materials which do not store elastic energy. Integral representation for energies in linear elasticity with surface discontinuities

In this paper we prove an integral representation formula for a general class of energies defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$) in arbitrary space dimensions. Functionals of this type naturally arise in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities including phenomena as fracture, damage, surface tension between different elastic phases, or material voids. Existence of strong minimizers for the Griffith static fracture model in dimension two

We consider the Griffith fracture model in two spatial dimensions, and prove existence of strong minimizers, with closed jump set and continuously differentiable deformation fields. One key ingredient, which is the object of the present paper, is a generalization of the decay estimate by De Giorgi, Carriero, and Leaci to the vectorial situation. Functions of bounded deformation ($BD$) arise naturally in the study of fracture and damage in a geometrically linear context. They are related to functions of bounded variation ($BV$), but are less well understood.
