Motivated by the control of invasive biological populations, we consider a class of optimization problems for moving sets $t\mapsto Ω(t)\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. Given an initial set $Ω_0$, the goal is to minimize the area of the contaminated set $Ω(t)$ over time, plus a cost related to the control effort. Here the control function is the inward normal speed along the boundary $\partial Ω(t)$. We prove the existence of optimal solutions, within a class of sets with finite perimeter. Necessary conditions for optimality are then derived, in the form of a Pontryagin maximum principle. Additional optimality conditions show that the sets $Ω(t)$ cannot have certain types of outward or inward corners. Finally, some explicit solutions are presented.
This paper concerns optimal control problems for a class of sweeping processes governed by discontinuous unbounded differential inclusions that are described via normal cone mappings to controlled moving sets. Largely motivated by applications to hysteresis, we consider a general setting where moving sets are given as inverse images of closed subsets of finite-dimensional spaces under nonlinear differentiable mappings dependent on both state and control variables. Developing the method of discrete approximations and employing generalized differential tools of first-order and second-order varia…
In Hilbert space setting we prove local lipchitzness of projections onto parametric polyhedral sets represented as solutions to systems of inequalities and equations with parameters appearing both in left-hand-sides and right-hand-sides of the constraints. In deriving main results we assume that data are locally Lipschitz functions of parameter and the relaxed constant rank constraint qualification condition is satisfied.
We give sufficient conditions for Lipschitz-likeness of a class of polyhedral set-valued mappings in Hilbert spaces based on Relaxed Constant Rank Constraint Qualification (RCRCQ) proposed recently by Minchenko and Stakhovsky. To this aim we prove the R-regularity of the considered set-valued mapping and correct the respective proof given by these authors.
Since its introduction over 50 years ago, the concept of Mosco convergence has permeated through diverse areas of mathematics and applied sciences. These include applied analysis, the theory of partial differential equations, numerical analysis, and infinite dimensional constrained optimization, among others. In this paper we explore some of the consequences of Mosco convergence on applied problems that involve moving sets, with some historical accounts, and modern trends and features. In particular, we focus on connections with density of convex intersections, finite element approximations, q…

This paper addresses a new class of optimal control problems for perturbed sweeping processes with measurable controls in additive perturbations of the dynamics and smooth controls in polyhedral moving sets. We develop a constructive discrete approximation procedure that allows us to strongly approximate any feasible trajectory of the controlled sweeping process by feasible discrete trajectories and also establish a $W^{1,2}$-strong convergence of optimal trajectories for discretized control problems to a given local minimizer of the original continuous-time sweeping control problem of the Bol…
In the present work, control of time-optimal trajectory for a Dubins airplane in presence of moving and fixed obstacles is obtained. We show that for a Dubins airplane with an initial position, the control variable can be obtained using the exact penalty function method so that the airplane reaches the end position in the shortest time in the presence of obstacles.
We consider the problem of time-optimal path planning for simple nonholonomic vehicles. In previous similar work, the vehicle has been simplified to a point mass and the obstacles have been stationary. Our formulation accounts for a rectangular vehicle, and involves the dynamic programming principle and a time-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) formulation which allows for moving obstacles. To our knowledge, this is the first HJB formulation of the problem which allows for moving obstacles. We design an upwind finite difference scheme to approximate the equation and demonstrate the effica…
The minimum-time path for intercepting a moving target with a prescribed impact angle is studied in the paper. The candidate paths from Pontryagin's maximum principle are analyzed, so that each candidate is related to a zero of a real-valued function. It is found that the real-valued functions or their first-order derivatives can be converted to polynomials of at most fourth degree. As a result, each canidate path can be computed within a constant time by embedding a standard polynomial solver into the typical bisection method. The control strategy along the shortest candidate eventually gives…
A time-optimal problem for redundantly actuated robots moving on a specified path is a challenging problem. Although the problem is well explored and there are proposed solutions based on phase plane analysis, there are still several unresolved issues regarding calculation of solution curves. In this paper, we explore the characteristics of the maximum velocity curve (MVC) and propose an efficient algorithm to establish the solution curve. Then we propose a straightforward method to calculate the maximum or minimum possible acceleration on the path based on the pattern of saturated actuators, …

In this paper, we introduce and study degenerate state-dependent sweeping processes with nonregular moving sets (subsmooth and positively $α$-far). Based on the Moreau-Yosida regularization, we prove the existence of solutions under the Lipschitzianity of the moving sets with respect to the truncated Hausdorff distance.
This paper is mainly devoted to the study of controlled sweeping processes with polyhedral moving sets in Hilbert spaces. Based on a detailed analysis of truncated Hausdorff distances between moving polyhedra, we derive new existence and uniqueness theorems for sweeping trajectories corresponding to various classes of control functions acting in moving sets. Then we establish quantitative stability results, which provide efficient estimates on the sweeping trajectory dependence on controls and initial values. Our final topic, accomplished in finite-dimensional state spaces, is deriving new nec…
This paper is concerned with a Minimum-Time Intercept Problem (MTIP), for which a Dubins vehicle is guided from a position with a prescribed initial orientation angle to intercept a moving target in minimum time. Some geometric properties for the solution of the MTIP are presented, showing that the solution path must lie in a sufficient family of 4 candidates. In addition, necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality of each candidate are established. When the target's velocity is constant, by employing the geometric properties, those 4 candidates are transformed to a class of sufficient…
This paper examines a co-design problem for industrial networked control systems (NCS) whereby physical systems are controlled over wireless fading channels. In particular, the considered wireless channels are also stochastically dependent on the physical states of moving machineries in an industrial working space. In this paper, the moving machineries are modeled as Markov decision processes whereas the characteristics of the correlated fading channels are modeled as a binary random process whose probability measure is a function of both the moving machineries' physical states and the channel…
The rapid escalation in plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and their uncoordinated charging patterns pose several challenges in distribution system operation. Some of the undesirable effects include overloading of transformers, rapid voltage fluctuations, and over/under voltages. While this compromises the consumer power quality, it also puts on extra stress on the local voltage control devices. These challenges demand for a well-coordinated and power network-aware charging approach for PEVs in a community. This paper formulates a real-time electric vehicle charging scheduling problem as an mixe…
In many engineered systems, optimization is used for decision making at time-scales ranging from real-time operation to long-term planning. This process often involves solving similar optimization problems over and over again with slightly modified input parameters, often under tight latency requirements. We consider the problem of using the information available through this repeated solution process to directly learn a model of the optimal solution as a function of the input parameters, thus reducing the need to solve computationally expensive large-scale parametric programs in real time. Ou…
In this paper we show that Sum-of-Squares optimization can be used to find optimal semialgebraic representations of sets. These sets may be explicitly defined, as in the case of discrete points or unions of sets; or implicitly defined, as in the case of attractors of nonlinear systems. We define optimality in the sense of minimum volume, while satisfying constraints that can include set containment, convexity, or Lyapunov stability conditions. Our admittedly heuristic approach to volume minimization is based on the use of a determinantlike objective function. We provide numerical examples for …

This work focuses on dynamic regret of online convex optimization that compares the performance of online learning to a clairvoyant who knows the sequence of loss functions in advance and hence selects the minimizer of the loss function at each step. By assuming that the clairvoyant moves slowly (i.e., the minimizers change slowly), we present several improved variation-based upper bounds of the dynamic regret under the true and noisy gradient feedback, which are {\it optimal} in light of the presented lower bounds. The key to our analysis is to explore a regularity metric that measures the te…
Designing experiments for generalized linear models is difficult because optimal designs depend on unknown parameters. The local optimality approach is to study the regions in parameter space where a given design is optimal. In many situations these regions are semi-algebraic. We investigate regions of optimality using computer tools such as yalmip, qepcad, and Mathematica.
