We continue the program of structural differential geometry that begins with the notion of a tangent category, an axiomatization of structural aspects of the tangent functor on the category of smooth manifolds. In classical geometry, having an affine structure on a manifold is equivalent to having a flat torsion-free connection on its tangent bundle. This equivalence allows us to define a category of affine objects associated to a tangent category and we show that the resulting category is also a tangent category, as are several related categories. As a consequence of some of these ideas we also give two new characterizations of flat torsion-free connections.
We also consider 2-categorical structure associated to the category of tangent categories and demonstrate that assignment of the tangent category of affine objects to a tangent category induces a 2-comonad.
Finally, following work of Jubin, we consider monads and comonads on the category of affine objects associated to a tangent category. We show that there is a rich theory of monads and comonads in this setting as well as various distributive laws and mixed distributive laws relating these monads and comonads. Even in the category of smooth manifolds, several of these results are new or fill in gaps in the existing literature.
Tangent categories are categories equipped with a tangent functor: an endofunctor with certain natural transformations which make it behave like the tangent bundle functor on the category of smooth manifolds. They provide an abstract setting for differential geometry by axiomatizing key aspects of the subject which allow the basic theory of these geometric settings to be captured. Importantly, they have models not only in classical differential geometry and its extensions, but also in algebraic geometry, combinatorics, computer science, and physics. This paper develops the theory of "different…
Connections are an important tool of differential geometry. This paper investigates their definition and structure in the abstract setting of tangent categories. At this level of abstraction we derive several classically important results about connections, including the Bianchi identities, identities for curvature and torsion, almost complex structure, and parallel transport.
We define involution algebroids which generalise Lie algebroids to the abstract setting of tangent categories. As a part of this generalisation the Jacobi identity which appears in classical Lie theory is replaced by an identity similar to the Yang-Baxter equation. Every classical Lie algebroid has the structure of an involution algebroid and every involution algebroid in a tangent category admits a Lie bracket on the sections of its underlying bundle. As an illustrative application we take the first steps in developing the homotopy theory of involution algebroids.
Tangent categories provide an axiomatic framework for understanding various tangent bundles and differential operations that occur in differential geometry, algebraic geometry, abstract homotopy theory, and computer science. Previous work has shown that one can formulate and prove a wide variety of definitions and results from differential geometry in an arbitrary tangent category, including generalizations of vector fields and their Lie bracket, vector bundles, and connections. In this paper we investigate differential and sector forms in tangent categories. We show that sector forms in any t…
Tangent categories were introduced by Rosicky as a categorical setting for differential structures in algebra and geometry; in recent work of Cockett, Crutwell and others, they have also been applied to the study of differential structure in computer science. In this paper, we prove that every tangent category admits an embedding into a representable tangent category---one whose tangent structure is given by exponentiating by a free-standing tangent vector, as in, for example, any model of Kock and Lawvere's synthetic differential geometry. The key step in our proof uses a coherence theorem fo…
Tangent categories provide an axiomatic approach to key structural aspects of differential geometry that exist not only in the classical category of smooth manifolds but also in algebraic geometry, homological algebra, computer science, and combinatorics. Generalizing the notion of (linear) connection on a smooth vector bundle, Cockett and Cruttwell have defined a notion of connection on a differential bundle in an arbitrary tangent category. Herein, we establish equivalent formulations of this notion of connection that reduce the amount of specified structure required. Further, one of our equ…
Following the pattern from linear logic, the coKleisli category of a differential category is a Cartesian differential category. What then is the coEilenberg-Moore category of a differential category? The answer is a tangent category! A key example arises from the opposite of the category of Abelian groups with the free exponential modality. The coEilenberg-Moore category, in this case, is the opposite of the category of commutative rings. That the latter is a tangent category captures a fundamental aspect of both algebraic geometry and Synthetic Differential Geometry. The general result appli…
Differential lambda-categories were introduced by Bucciarelli et al. as models for the simply typed version of the differential lambda-calculus of Ehrhard and Regnier. A differential lambda-category is a cartesian closed differential category of Blute et al. in which the differential operator is compatible with the closed structure. We prove that any differential lambda-category is equipped with a canonical strong commutative monad whose construction resembles that of the tangent bundle in the category of smooth manifolds. Most of the results of this note remain valid in an arbitrary cartesian…
The Faà di Bruno construction, introduced by Cockett and Seely, constructs a comonad $\mathsf{Fa{\grave{a}}}$ whose coalgebras are precisely Cartesian differential categories. In other words, for a Cartesian left additive category $\mathbb{X}$, $\mathsf{Fa{\grave{a}}}(\mathbb{X})$ is the cofree Cartesian differential category over $\mathbb{X}$. Composition in these cofree Cartesian differential categories is based on the Faà di Bruno formula, and corresponds to composition of differential forms. This composition, however, is somewhat complex and difficult to work with. In this paper we provide…
We describe dual notions of tangent bundle for an infinity-topos, each underlying a tangent infinity-category in the sense of Bauer, Burke and the author. One of those notions is Lurie's tangent bundle functor for presentable infinity-categories, and the other is its adjoint. We calculate that adjoint for injective infinity-toposes, where it is given by applying Lurie's tangent bundle on infinity-categories of points.
In this paper, we introduce a rewriting theory of linear monoidal categories. Those categories are a particular case of what we will define as linear (n, p)-categories. We will also define linear (n, p)-polygraphs, a linear adapation of n-polygraphs, to present linear (n -- 1, p)-categories. We focus then on linear (3, 2)-polygraphs to give presentations of linear monoidal categories. We finally give an application of this theory in linear (3, 2)-polygraphs to prove a basis theorem on the category AOB with a new method using a rewriting property defined by van Ostroom: decreasingness.
In category theory, monads, which are monoid objects on endofunctors, play a central role closely related to adjunctions. Monads have been studied mostly in algebraic situations. In this dissertation, we study this concept in some categories of smooth manifolds. Namely, the tangent functor in the category of smooth manifolds is the functor part of a unique monad, which is the main character of this dissertation. After its construction and the study of uniqueness properties in related categories, we study its algebras, which are to this monad what representations are to a group. We give some ex…
We prove a conjecture by Lusztig, which describes the tensor categories of perverse sheaves on affine flag manifolds, with tensor structure provided by truncated convolution, in terms of the Langlands dual group. We also give a geometric (categorical) description of Lusztig's bijection between two-sided cells in an affine Weyl group, and unipotent conjugacy classes in the Langlands dual group. The main tool is the sheaf-theoretic construction of the center of the affine Hecke algebra due to Gaitsgory (based on ideas of Beilinson and Kottwitz), see math.AG/9912074.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\ge 0$. Let $G$ be an affine group scheme over $k$. We classify the indecomposable exact module categories over the rigid tensor category $\text{Coh}_f(G)$ of coherent sheaves of finite dimensional $k-$vector spaces on $G$, in terms of $(H,ψ)-$equivariant coherent sheaves on $G$. We deduce from it the classification of indecomposable {\em geometrical} module categories over $\Rep(G)$. When $G$ is finite, this yields the classification of {\em all} indecomposable exact module categories over the finite tensor category $\Rep(G)$. In pa…
Given a simply connected manifold M such that its cochain algebra, C^\star(M), is a pure Sullivan dga, this paper considers curved deformations of the algebra C_\star(ΩM) and consider when the category of curved modules over these algebras becomes fully dualizable. For simple manifolds, like products of spheres, we are able to give an explicit criterion for when the resulting category of curved modules is smooth, proper and CY and thus gives rise to a TQFT. We give Floer theoretic interpretations of these theories for projective spaces and their products, which involve defining a Fukaya catego…
The main result is that the category of ordinary modules of an affine vertex operator algebra of a simply laced Lie algebra at admissible level is rigid and thus a braided fusion category. If the level satisfies a certain coprime property then it is even a modular tensor category. In all cases open Hopf links coincide with the corresponding normalized S-matrix entries of torus one-point functions. This is interpreted as a Verlinde formula beyond rational vertex operator algebras. A preparatory Theorem is a convenient formula for the fusion rules of rational principal W-algebras of any type.
We prove that the Balmer spectrum of a tensor triangulated category is homeomorphic to the Zariski spectrum of its graded central ring, provided the triangulated category is generated by its tensor unit and the graded central ring is noetherian and regular in a weak sense. There follows a classification of all thick subcategories, and the result extends to the compactly generated setting to yield a classification of all localizing subcategories as well as the analog of the telescope conjecture. This generalizes results of Shamir for commutative ring spectra.
Finite Temperley-Lieb (TL) algebras are diagram-algebra quotients of (the group algebra of) the famous Artin's braid group $B_N$, while the affine TL algebras arise as diagram algebras from a generalized version of the braid group. We study asymptotic `$N\to\infty$' representation theory of these quotients (parametrized by $q\in\mathbb{C}^{\times}$) from a perspective of braided monoidal categories. Using certain idempotent subalgebras in the finite and affine algebras, we construct infinite `arc' towers of the diagram algebras and the corresponding direct system of representation categories, …
We construct a weak representation of the category of framed affine tangles on a disjoint union of triangulated categories ${\mathcal D}_{2n}$. The categories we use are that of coherent sheaves on Springer fibers over a nilpotent element of $sl_{2n}$ with two equal Jordan blocks. This representation allows us to enumerate the irreducible objects in the heart of the exotic $t$-structure on ${\mathcal D}_{2n}$ by crossingless matchings of $2n$ points on a circle. We also describe the algebra of endomorphisms of the direct sum of the irreducible objects.
We show that direct limit completions of vertex tensor categories inherit vertex and braided tensor category structures, under conditions that hold for example for all known Virasoro and affine Lie algebra tensor categories. A consequence is that the theory of vertex operator (super)algebra extensions also applies to infinite-order extensions. As an application, we relate rigid and non-degenerate vertex tensor categories of certain modules for both the affine vertex superalgebra of $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ and the $N=1$ super Virasoro algebra to categories of Virasoro algebra modules via certain …
