A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is said to be a TNI-subgroup if $N_{G}(H)\cap H^g=1$ for any $g\in G\,\backslash \,N_{G}(H).$ Let $A$ be an abelian group acting coprimely on the finite group $G$ by automorphisms in such a way that $C_G(A)=\{g\in G : g^a=g $\, for all $a\in A\}$ is a solvable TNI-subgroup of $G$. We prove that $G$ is a solvable group with Fitting length $h(G)$ is at most $h(C_G(A))+\ell(A)$. In particular $h(G)\leq \ell(A)+3$ whenever $C_G(A)$ is nonnormal. Here, $h(G)$ is the Fitting length of $G$ and $\ell(A)$ is the number of primes dividing $A$ counted with multiplicities.
In this paper, we characterize finite group $G$ with unique proper non-abelian element centralizer. This improves \cite[Theorem 1.1]{nab}. Among other results, we have proved that if $C(a)$ is the proper non-abelian element centralizer of $G$ for some $a \in G$, then $\frac{C(a)}{Z(G)}$ is the Fitting subgroup of $\frac{G}{Z(G)}$, $C(a)$ is the Fitting subgroup of $G$ and $G' \in C(a)$, where $G'$ is the commutator subgroup of $G$.
The article deals with profinite groups in which the centralizers are abelian (CA-groups), that is, with profinite commutativity-transitive groups. It is shown that such groups are virtually pronilpotent. More precisely, let G be a profinite CA-group. It is shown that G has a normal open subgroup N which is either abelian or pro-p. Further, a rather detailed information about the finite quotient G/N is obtained.
Let $G$ be a finite non-abelian group and $m=|G|/|Z(G)|$. In this paper we investigate $m$-centralizer group $G$ with cyclic center and we will prove that if $G$ is a finite non-abelian $m$-centralizer $CA$-group, then there exists an integer $r>1$ such that $m=2^r.$ It is also prove that if $G$ is an $m$-centralizer non-abelian finite group which is not a $CA$-group and its derived subgroup $G'$ is of order 2, then there exists an integer $s>1$ such that $m=2^{2s}.$
A group G has restricted centralizers if for each g in G the centralizer C_G(g) either is finite or has finite index in G. A theorem of Shalev states that a profinite group with restricted centralizers is abelian-by-finite. In the present article we handle profinite groups with restricted centralizers of word-values. We show that if w is a multilinear commutator word and G a profinite group with restricted centralizers of w-values, then the verbal subgroup w(G) is abelian-by-finite.
A group $G$ is said to be $n$-centralizer if its number of element centralizers $\mid \Cent(G)\mid=n$, an F-group if every non-central element centralizer contains no other element centralizer and a CA-group if all non-central element centralizers are abelian. For any non-abelian $n$-centralizer group $G$, we prove that $\mid \frac{G}{Z(G)}\mid \leq (n-2)^2$, if $n \leq 12$ and $\mid \frac{G}{Z(G)}\mid \leq 2(n-4)^{{log}_2^{(n-4)}}$ otherwise, which improves an earlier result. We prove that if $G$ is an arbitrary non-abelian $n$-centralizer F-group, then gcd$(n-2, \mid \frac{G}{Z(G)}\mid) \neq…
We extend results on transitive self-similar abelian subgroups of the group of automorphisms $\mathcal{A}_m$ of an $m$-ary tree $\mathcal{T}_m$ in \cite{BS}, to the general case where the permutation group induced on the first level of the tree has $s\geq 1$ orbits. We prove that such a group $A$ embeds in a self-similar abelian group $A^*$ which is also a maximal abelian subgroup of $\mathcal{A}_m$. The construction of $A^*$ is based on the definition of a free monoid $Δ$ of rank $s$ of partial diagonal monomorphisms of $\mathcal{A}_m$, which is used to determine the structure of $C_{\mathcal…
A group $G$ is said to have restricted centralizers if for each $g$ in $G$ the centralizer $C_G(g)$ either is finite or has finite index in $G$. Shalev showed that a profinite group with restricted centralizers is virtually abelian. Given a set of primes $π$, we take interest in profinite groups with restricted centralizers of $π$-elements. It is shown that such a profinite group has an open subgroup of the form $P\times Q$, where $P$ is an abelian pro-$π$ subgroup and $Q$ is a pro-$π'$ subgroup. This significantly strengthens a result from our earlier paper.
Every finite non-abelian group of order $n$ has a non-central element whose centralizer has order exceeding $n^{1/3}$. The proof does not rely on the classification of finite simple groups, yet it uses the Feit-Thompson theorem.
The set of all centralizers of elements in a finite group $G$ is denoted by $Cent(G)$ and $G$ is called $n-$centralizer if $|Cent(G)| = n$. In this paper, the structure of centralizers in a non-abelian finite group $G$ with this property that $\frac{G}{Z(G)} \cong Z_{p^2} \rtimes Z_{p^2}$ is obtained. As a consequence, it is proved that such a group has exactly $[(p+1)^2+1]$ element centralizers and the structure of the commuting conjugacy class graph of $G$ is completely determined.
The role of finite centralizers of involutions in pseudo-finite groups is analyzed. It is shown that a pseudo-finite group admitting a definable involutory automorphism fixing only finitely many elements is finite-by-abelian-by-finite. As a consequence, we give a model-theoretic proof of a result for periodic groups due to Hartley and Meixner. Furthermore, it is shown that any pseudo-finite group has an infinite abelian subgroup.
We consider abelain subgroups of small index in finite groups. More generally, we consider subgroups such that the product of their index by the index of their centralizer is small.
Let $N \geq 2$ and let $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ be the outer automorphism group of a nonabelian free group of rank $N$. Let $\mathrm{IA}_N(\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z})$ be the finite index subgroup of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ which is the kernel of the natural action of $\mathrm{Out}(F_N)$ on $H_1(F_N,\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z})$. We show that $\mathrm{IA}_N(\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z})$ is an $R$-group, that is, for every $ϕ,ψ\in \mathrm{IA}_N(\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z})$, if there exists $k \in \mathbb{N}^*$ such that $ϕ^k=ψ^k$, then $ϕ=ψ$. This answers a question of Handel and Mosher. We then use the fact that $\mathr…
A group $G$ is said to have restricted centralizers if for each $g \in G$ the centralizer $C_G(g)$ either is finite or has finite index in $G$. Shalev showed that a profinite group with restricted centralizers is virtually abelian. We take interest in profinite groups with restricted centralizers of uniform commutators, that is, elements of the form $[x_1,\dots,x_k]$, where $π(x_1)=π(x_2)=\dots=π(x_k)$. Here $π(x)$ denotes the set of prime divisors of the order of $x\in G$. It is shown that such a group necessarily has an open nilpotent subgroup. We use this result to deduce that $γ_k(G)$ is f…
We explore when generator-conjugate homomorphisms are conjugate and when element-conjugate homomorphisms are conjugate from abelian or dihedral groups to the symmetric group. We completely determine when such homomorphisms are conjugate in the case where the source group has two generators by studying centralizer actions in the target group.
We classify abelian subgroups of the automorphism group of any compact simple Lie algebra whose centralizer has the same dimension as the dimension of the subgroup. This leads to a classification of the maximal abelian subgroups of compact simple groups of adjoint type and a classification of the fine group gradings of complex simple Lie algebras.
We show that, for any given subgroup $H$ of a finite group $G$, the Quillen poset $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ of nontrivial elementary abelian $p$-subgroups, is obtained from $\mathcal{A}_p(H)$ by attaching elements via their centralizers in $H$. We use this idea to study Quillen's conjecture, which asserts that if $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ is contractible then $G$ has a nontrivial normal $p$-subgroup. We prove that the original conjecture is equivalent to the $\mathbb{Z}$-acyclic version of the conjecture (obtained by replacing contractible by $\mathbb{Z}$-acyclic). We also work with the $\mathbb{Q}$-acyclic…
A group is called a CA-group if the centralizer of every non-central element is abelian. Furthermore, a group is called a minimal non-CA-group if it is not a CA-group itself, but all of its proper subgroups are. In this paper, we give a classification of the finite non-solvable minimal non-CA-groups.
We show that any soluble group $G$ of type Bredon-$\FP_{\infty}$ with respect to the family of all virtually cyclic subgroups such that centralizers of infinite order elements are of type $\FP_{\infty}$ must be virtually cyclic. To prove this, we first reduce the problem to the case of polycyclic groups and then we show that a polycyclic-by-finite group with finitely many conjugacy classes of maximal virtually cyclic subgroups is virtually cyclic. Finally we discuss refinements of this result: we only impose the property Bredon-$\FP_n$ for some $n \leq 3$ and restrict to abelian-by-nilpotent, …
Finite groups with very few character values are characterized. The following is the main result of this article: a finite non-abelian group has precisely four character values if and only if it is the generalized dihedral group of a non-trivial elementary abelian $3$-group. The proof involves the analysis of the centralizers of involutions.
Let $p$ be a an odd prime and let $G$ be a finite $p$-group with cyclic commutator subgroup $G'$. We prove that the exponent and the abelianization of the centralizer of $G'$ in $G$ are determined by the group algebra of $G$ over any field of characteristic $p$. If, additionally, $G$ is $2$-generated then almost all the numerical invariants determining $G$ up to isomorphism are determined by the same group algebras; as a consequence the isomorphism type of the centralizer of $G'$ is determined. These claims are known to be false for $p=2$.
Let $G_Γ\curvearrowright X$ and $G_Λ\curvearrowright Y$ be two free measure-preserving actions of one-ended right-angled Artin groups with trivial center on standard probability spaces. Assume they are irreducible, i.e. every element from a standard generating set acts ergodically. We prove that if the two actions are stably orbit equivalent (or merely stably $W^*$-equivalent), then they are automatically conjugate through a group isomorphism between $G_Γ$ and $G_Λ$. Through work of Monod and Shalom, we derive a superrigidity statement: if the action $G_Γ\curvearrowright X$ is stably orbit equ…
Let $U$ be a Banach Lie group and $G\le U$ a compact subgroup. We show that closed Lie subgroups of $U$ contained in sufficiently small neighborhoods $V\supseteq G$ are compact, and conjugate to subgroups of $G$ by elements close to $1\in U$; this generalizes a well-known result of Montgomery and Zippin's from finite- to infinite-dimensional Lie groups. Along the way, we also prove an approximate counterpart to Jordan's theorem on finite subgroups of general linear groups: finite subgroups of $U$ contained in sufficiently small neighborhoods $V\supseteq G$ have normal abelian subgroups of inde…
Classifying endotrivial kG-modules, i.e., elements of the Picard group of the stable module category for an arbitrary finite group G, has been a long-running quest. By deep work of Dade, Alperin, Carlson, Thevenaz, and others, it has been reduced to understanding the subgroup consisting of modular representations that split as the trivial module k direct sum a projective module when restricted to a Sylow p-subgroup. In this paper we identify this subgroup as the first cohomology group of the orbit category on non-trivial p-subgroups with values in the units k^x, viewed as a constant coefficien…
