Novel topological phenomena are anticipated for three-dimensional (3D) Dirac electrons. The magnetotransport properties of cubic ${\rm Sr_{3}PbO}$ antiperovskite, theoretically proposed to be a 3D massive Dirac electron system, are studied. The measurements of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and Hall resistivity indicate the presence of a low density ($\sim 1 \times 10^{18}$ ${\rm cm^{-3}}$) of holes with an extremely small cyclotron mass of 0.01-0.06$m_{e}$. The magnetoresistance $Δρ_{xx}(B)$ is linear in magnetic field $B$ with the magnitude independent of temperature. These results are fully consistent with the presence of 3D massive Dirac electrons in ${\rm Sr_{3}PbO}$. The chemical flexibility of the antiperovskites and our findings in the family member, ${\rm Sr_{3}PbO}$, point to their potential as a model system in which to explore exotic topological phases.
In Dirac semimetals, inter-band mixing has been known theoretically to give rise to a giant orbital diamagnetism when the Fermi level is close to the Dirac point. In Bi$ _{1-x}$Sb$ _x$ and other Dirac semimetals, an enhanced diamagnetism in the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ has been observed and interpreted as a manifestation of such giant orbital diamagnetism. Experimentally proving their orbital origin, however, has remained challenging. Cubic antiperovskite Sr$ _3$PbO is a three-dimensional Dirac electron system and shows the giant diamagnetism in $χ$ as in the other Dirac semimetals. $ ^{207…
We study the effect of the long-range Coulomb interaction in $j=3/2$ Dirac electrons in cubic crystals with the $O_h$ symmetry, which serves as an effective model for antiperovskite topological crystalline insulators. The renormalization group analysis reveals three fixed points that are Lorentz invariant, rotationally invariant, and $O_h$ invariant. Among them, the Lorentz- and $O_h$-invariant fixed points are stable in the low-energy limit while the rotationally invariant fixed point is unstable. The existence of a stable $O_h$-invariant fixed point of Dirac fermions with finite velocity ani…

We present the result of an \textit{ab initio} search for new Dirac materials among inverse perovskites. Our investigation is focused on the less studied class of lanthanide antiperovskites containing heavy $f$-electron elements in the cation position. Some of the studied compounds have not yet been synthesized experimentally. Our computational approach is based on density functional theory calculations which account for spin-orbit interaction and strong correlations of the $f$-electron atoms. We find several promising candidates among lanthanide antiperovskites which host bulk Dirac states cl…
The band topology of magnetic semimetals is of interest both from the fundamental science point of view and with respect to potential spintronics and memory applications. Unfortunately, only a handful of suitable topological semimetals with magnetic order have been discovered so far. One such family that hosts these characteristics is the antiperovskites, A$_3$BO, a family of 3D Dirac semimetals. The A=Eu$^{2+}$ compounds magnetically order with multiple phases as a function of applied magnetic field. Here, by combining band structure calculations with neutron diffraction and magnetic measurem…
Oxides with perovskite-based structures have been known as essential materials for fascinating phenomena such as high-temperature and unconventional superconductivity. Discoveries of these oxide superconductors have driven the science community to vastly extend the concepts of strongly correlated electron systems. The base of these materials, the cubic perovskite oxides, $AB$O$_3$, also exhibit superconductivity with $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of up to 30 K, as reported for Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$BiO$_3$. Perovskite oxides have their counterparts, antiperovskite oxides $A_3B$O (or "$B$O$A_3$"), in which the…
Based on first-principles calculation and effective model analysis, we propose that the cubic antiperovskite material Cu$_3$PdN can host a three-dimensional (3D) topological nodal line semimetal state when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored, which is protected by coexistence of time-reversal and inversion symmetry. There are three nodal line circles in total due to the cubic symmetry. "Drumhead"-like surface flat bands are also derived. When SOC is included, each nodal line evolves into a pair of stable 3D Dirac points as protected by C$_4$ crystal symmetry. This is remarkably distinguished …
We perform a comparative study on thermoelectric performance of antiperovskite oxides $Ae_3Tt$O and nitrides $Ae_3Pn$N ($Ae=$ Ca, Sr, Ba; $Tt=$ Ge, Sn, Pb; $Pn=$ As, Sb, Bi) by means of first-principles calculation. As for the oxides with the cubic structure, Ca$_3$GeO with a sizable band gap exhibits high thermoelectric performance at high temperatures, while Ba$_3$PbO with Dirac cones without the gap is favorable at low temperatures. The latter high performance owes to high valley degeneracy including the multiple Dirac cones and the valleys near the $Γ$ and R points. For the nitrides with t…
In this article, we predict the occurrence of topological non-trivial phase in hexagonal antiperovskite systems. By carefully investigating the evolution of band structure, we have studied the pressure induced topological phase transition in Ba$_{3}$BiP, Ba$_{3}$BiN, and Sr$_{3}$BiN compounds using the hybrid functional calculations. The non-trivial topology has been verified by computing Dirac like surface dispersion and topological invariant {\it Z$_2$} index via parity analysis. The unconventional spin texture has been analyzed which guaranteed the absence of impurity induced backscattering…
Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ has been proposed to be topologically non-trivial in nature. However, evidence of its non-trivial behavior is still unexplored. We report the growth and magneto-transport study of Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ thin films, revealing for the first time the contribution of two-dimensional (2D) topological surface states. We observe exceptional non-saturated linear magnetoresistance which results from Dirac fermions inhabiting the lowest Landau level in the quantum limit. The transverse magnetoresistance changes from a semi-classical weak-field $B^{2}$ dependence to a high-fiel…
We theoretically demonstrate how competition between band inversion and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) results in nontrivial evolution of band topology, taking antiperovskite Ba$_3$SnO as a prototype material. A key observation is that when the band inversion dominates over SOC, there appear "twin" Dirac cones in the band structure. Due to the twin Dirac cones, the band shows highly peculiar structure in which the upper cone of one of the twin continuously transforms to the lower cone of the other. Interestingly, the relative size of the band inversion and SOC is controlled in this series of antipe…
Weyl semimetals (WSM) exhibit chiral anomaly in their magnetotransport due to broken conservation laws. Here, we analyze the magnetotransport of WSM in the presence of the time-reversal symmetry-breaking tilt parameter. The analytical expression for the magnetoconductivity is derived in the small tilt limit using the semiclassical Boltzmann equation. We predict a planar Hall current which flows transverse to the electric field and in the plane containing magnetic and electric fields and scales linearly with the tilt parameter. A tilt-induced transverse conductivity is also present in the case …
We report an experimental study of the magnetic order and electronic structure and transport of the layered pnictide EuMnSb$_2$, performed using neutron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and magnetotransport measurements. We find that the Eu and Mn sublattices display antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Eu} = 21(1)$ K and $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Mn} = 350(2)$ K respectively. The former can be described by an A-type AFM structure with the Eu spins aligned along the $c$ axis (an in-plane direction), whereas the latter has a C-type AFM structure w…
The few reported members of the antiperovskite structure class $Ae_3Pn_APn_B$ of alkaline earth ($Ae$ = Ca,Sr,Ba) pnictides ($Pn$ = N,P,As,Sb,Bi) compounds are all based on the B-site anion $Pn_B$=N. All fit can be categorized as narrow gap semiconductors, making them of interest for several reasons. Because chemical reasoning suggests that more members of this class may be stable, we provide here a density functional theory (DFT) based survey of this entire class of $3\times5\times5$ compounds. We determine first the relative energetic stability of the distribution of pairs of $Pn$ ions in th…
We report the first experimental results of the magnetoresistance, Hall effect, and quantum Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations on single crystals of ZrTe, which was recently predicted to be a new type of topological semimetal hosting both triply degenerate crossing points and Weyl fermion state. The analysis of Hall effect and quantum oscillations indicate that ZrTe is a multiband system with low carrier density, high carrier mobility, small cross-sectional area of Fermi surface, and light cyclotron effective mass, as observed in many topological semimetals. Meanwhile, the angular dependence of th…
Landau levels of AB-stacked four- to six-layer graphene were studied experimentally in the presence of a perpendicular electric field. The Landau levels at a low magnetic field showed a characteristic structure that originated from the mini-Dirac cones created by the perpendicular electric fields. Six-fold or twelve-fold degenerate Landau levels arising from the mini-Dirac cones were observed in the vicinity of the charge neutrality point as a radial structure in a plot of their Landau fan diagrams. The structure of four-layer graphene had approximate electron-hole symmetry near the charge neu…
Three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetal is a new kind of material that has a linear energy dispersion in 3D momentum space and can be viewed as an analog of graphene. Extensive efforts have been devoted to the understanding of bulk materials, but yet it remains a challenge to explore the intriguing physics in low-dimensional Dirac semimetals. Here, we report on the synthesis of Cd3As2 nanowires and nanobelts and a systematic investigation of their magnetotransport properties. Temperature-dependent ambipolar behavior is evidently demonstrated, suggesting the presence of finite-size o…
We study a three-dimensional chiral second order topological insulator (SOTI) subject to a magnetic field. Via its gauge field, the applied magnetic field influences the electronic motion on the lattice, and via the Zeeman effect, the field influences the electronic spin. We compare two approaches to the problem: an effective surface theory, and a full lattice calculation. The surface theory predicts a massive Dirac spectrum on each of the gapped surfaces, giving rise to Landau levels once the surfaces are pierced by magnetic flux. The surface theory qualitatively agrees with our lattice calcu…
We present a study on magnetotransport in films of the topological Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ doped with Sb grown by molecular beam epitaxy. In our weak antilocalization analysis, we find a significant enhancement of the spin-orbit scattering rate, indicating that Sb doping leads to a strong increase of the pristine band-inversion energy. We discuss possible origins of this large enhancement by comparing Sb-doped Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ with other compound semiconductors. Sb-doped Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ will be a suitable system for further investigations and functionalization of topological Dirac se…
We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in BaMnBi2 single crystals. BaMnBi2 is a layered bad metal with highly anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase, small cyclotronmass, and the first-principles band structure calculations indicate the presence of Dirac fermions in Bi square nets. Quantum oscillations in the Hall channel suggest the presence of both electron and hole pockets, whereas Dirac and parabolic states coexist at the Fermi level.
We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 single crystals. YbMnBi2 is a layered material with anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase and small cyclotron mass indicate the presence of quasi two dimensional Dirac fermions. Quantum oscillations in Hall resistivity suggest the presence of both electron and hole parts of the Fermi surface whereas the Berry phase suggests spin-orbit coupling.
We report experimental evidence of topological Dirac fermion charge carriers in pure and robust $α$-Sn films grown on InSb substrates. This evidence was acquired using standard macroscopic four-point contact resistance measurements, conducted on uncapped films with a significantly reduced bulk mobility. We analyzed and compared electrical characteristics of the constituting components of the $α$-Sn/InSb sample, and propose a three-band drift velocity model accordingly. A surface band, with low carrier density and high mobility, is identified as the origin of the observed Shubnikov -- de Haas o…

For the innovation of spintronic technologies, Dirac materials, in which the low-energy excitation is described as relativistic Dirac fermions, are one of the most promising systems, because of the fascinating magnetotransport associated with the extremely high mobility. To incorporate Dirac fermions into spintronic applications, their quantum transport phenomena are desired to be manipulated to a large extent by magnetic order in a solid. We here report a bulk half-integer quantum Hall effect in a layered antiferromagnet EuMnBi$_2$, in which field-controllable Eu magnetic order significantly …
CaFeAsF is an iron-based superconductor parent compound whose Fermi surface is quasi-two dimensional, composed of Dirac-electron and Schrödinger-hole cylinders elongated along the $c$ axis. We measured the longitudinal and Hall resistivities in CaFeAsF with the electrical current in the $ab$ plane in magnetic fields up to 45 T applied along the $c$ axis and obtained the corresponding conductivities via tensor inversion. We found that both the longitudinal and Hall conductivities approached zero above $\sim$40 T as the temperature was lowered to 0.4 K. Our analysis indicates that the Landau-lev…

In the two-dimensional case the transition between ordinary and topological insulator states can be described by a massive Dirac model with the mass term changing its sign at the transition point. We theoretically investigate how such a transition manifests itself in resonant transport via localized helical edge states. The resonance occurs in the middle of the band gap due to a zero edge-state mode which is protected by the time-reversal symmetry, also when coupled to the conducting leads. We obtain the explicit dependence of the resonant conductance on the mass parameter and an external magn…
Rapid progress of quantum transport study in topological Dirac semimetal, including observations of quantum Hall effect in two-dimensional (2D) Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ samples, has uncovered even more interesting quantum transport properties in high-quality and three-dimensional (3D) samples. However, such 3D Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ films with low carrier density and high electron mobility have been hardly obtained. Here we report the growth and characterization of 3D thick Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ films adopting molecular beam epitaxy. The highest electron mobi…

Here we review the exotic electrical transport phenomena in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Section 1 is a brief introduction to the topological semimetals (TSMs). In Section 2 and Section 3, the intriguing transport phenomena in Dirac semimetals (DSMs) and Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are reviewed, respectively. The most widely studied Cd3As2 and the TaAs family are selected as representatives …
Massive Dirac fermions break the chiral symmetry explicitly and also make the Berry curvature of the band structure non-Abelian. By utilizing the Green's function technique, we develop a microscopic theory to establish a set of quantum diffusive equations for massive Dirac materials in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. It is found that the longitudinal magnetoresistance is always negative and quadratic in the magnetic field, and decays quickly with the mass. The theory is applicable to the systems with non-Abelian Berry curvature and resolves the puzzles of anomalous magnetotranspo…

Transport measurements have been a powerful tool for uncovering new electronic phenomena in graphene. We report nonlocal measurements performed in the Hall bar geometry with voltage probes far away from the classical path of charge flow. We observe a large nonlocal response near the Dirac point in fields as low as 0.1T, which persists up to room temperature. The nonlocality is consistent with the long-range flavor currents induced by lifting of spin/valley degeneracy. The effect is expected to contribute strongly to all magnetotransport phenomena near the neutrality point.
We report magnetotransport properties of BaZnBi$_{2}$ single crystals. Whereas electronic structure features Dirac states, such states are removed from the Fermi level by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and consequently electronic transport is dominated by the small hole and electron pockets. Our results are consistent with three dimensional (3D) but also with quasi two dimensional (2D) portions of the Fermi surface. The spin-orbit coupling-induced gap in Dirac states is much larger when compared to isostructural SrMnBi$_{2}$. This suggests that not only long range magnetic order but also mass of th…
The magnetotransport properties of epitaxial films of Cd3As2, a paradigm three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, are investigated. We show that an energy gap opens in the bulk electronic states of sufficiently thin films and, at low temperatures, carriers residing in surface states dominate the electrical transport. The carriers in these states are sufficiently mobile to give rise to a quantized Hall effect. The sharp quantization demonstrates surface transport that is virtually free of parasitic bulk conduction and paves the way for novel quantum transport studies in this class of topological mate…
Three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals are new quantum materials and can be viewed as 3D analogues of graphene. Many fascinating electronic properties have been proposed and realized in 3D Dirac semimetals, which demonstrates their potential applications in next generation quantum devices. Bismuth-antimony Bi1-xSbx can be tuned from a topological insulator to a band insulator through a quantum critical point at x ~ 4%, where 3D Dirac fermions appear. Here, we report on a magnetotransport study of Bi1-xSbx at such a quantum critical point. An unusual magnetic-field induced semimetal-semiconduc…
Cd3As2 is a candidate three-dimensional Dirac semi-metal which has exceedingly high mobility and non-saturating linear magnetoresistance that may be relevant for future practical applications. We report magnetotransport and tunnel diode oscillation measurements on Cd3As2, in magnetic fields up to 65 T and temperatures between 1.5K to 300K. We find the non-saturating linear magnetoresistance persist up to 65T and it is likely caused by disorder effects as it scales with the high mobility, rather than directly linked to Fermi surface changes even when approaching the quantum limit. From the obse…
The structural, magnetotransport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of Ag-doped Bi2Se3 single crystals are presented. Temperature dependent resistivity exhibits metallic behavior with a slope change above 200 K for Ag-doped Bi2Se3. The magnetoresistance shows positive quadratic dependence at low fields satisfying Kohler's rule. Hall resistivity measurement shows that electrons are dominant charge carriers. Furthermore, these results agree well with the ARPES spectra observed at T = 20 K, where the Fermi level lies inside the bulk conduction band. The Dirac point of the topo…
The newly discovered topological Dirac semimetals host the possibilities of various topological phase transitions through the control of spin-orbit coupling as well as symmetries and dimensionalities. Here, we report a magnetotransport study of high-mobility (Cd1-xZnx)3As2 films, where the topological Dirac semimetal phase can be turned into a trivial insulator via chemical substitution. By high-field measurements with a Hall-bar geometry, magnetoresistance components ascribed to the chiral charge pumping have been distinguished from other extrinsic effects. The negative magnetoresistance exhi…
We show that shaped topological insulator (TI) nanowires, i.e. such that their cross-section radius varies along the wire length, can be tuned into a number of different transport regimes when immersed in a homogeneous coaxial magnetic field. This is in contrast with widely studied tubular nanowires with constant cross-section, and is due to magnetic confinement of Dirac surface carriers. In flat 2D systems such a confinement requires non-homogeneous magnetic fields, while for shaped nanowires of standard size homogeneous fields of the order of $B\sim\,1$T are sufficient. We put recent work [K…
We report magnetotransport studies on a gated strained HgTe device. This material is a threedimensional topological insulator and exclusively shows surface state transport. Remarkably, the Landau level dispersion and the accuracy of the Hall quantization remain unchanged over a wide density range ($3 \times 10^{11} cm^{-2} < n < 1 \times 10^{12} cm^{-2}$). This implies that even at large carrier densities the transport is surface state dominated, where bulk transport would have been expected to coexist already. Moreover, the density dependence of the Dirac-type quantum Hall effect allows to id…
Cd3As2 is a model material of Dirac semimetal with a linear dispersion relation along all three directions in the momentum space. The unique band structure of Cd3As2 makes it with both Dirac and topological properties. It can be driven into a Weyl semimetal by the symmetry breaking or a topological insulator by enhancing the spin-orbit coupling. Here we report the temperature and gate voltage dependent magnetotransport properties of Cd3As2 nanoplates with Fermi level near the Dirac point. The Hall anomaly demonstrates the two-carrier transport accompanied by a transition from n-type to p-type …
We report the successful formation of bulk insulating ternary topological insulators candidate Bi2Se2Te (BST) by pulsed laser deposition technique. The films were deposited with sequential ablation of separate Bi2Se3 (BS) and Bi2Te3 (BT) targets. From the X-ray diffraction analysis and temperature dependent resistivity we were able to conclude that the as grown thin films have ordered chalcogen layers and the chemical potential in these thin films lie in the bulk gap. To realize entirely topological transport for any device applications it is essential to tune the chemical potential in the bul…
Preceded by the discovery of topological insulators, Dirac and Weyl semimetals have become a pivotal direction of research in contemporary condensed matter physics. While easily accessible from a theoretical viewpoint, these topological semimetals pose a serious challenge in terms of experimental synthesis and analysis to allow for their unambiguous identification. In this work, we report on detailed transport experiments on compressively strained HgTe. Due to the superior sample quality in comparison to other topological semimetallic materials, this enables us to resolve the interplay of topo…
Low-field magnetotransport measurements of topological insulators such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$ are important for revealing the nature of topological surface states by quantum corrections to the conductivity, such as weak-antilocalization. Recently, a rich variety of high-field magnetotransport properties in the regime of high electron densities ($\sim10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$) were reported, which can be related to additional two-dimensional layered conductivity, hampering the identification of the topological surface states. Here, we report that quantum corrections to the electronic conduction are dominated…
Novel topological state of matter is one of the rapidly growing fields in condensed matter physics research in recent times. While these materials are fascinating from the aspect of fundamental physics of relativistic particles, their exotic transport properties are equally compelling due to the potential technological applications. Extreme magnetoresistance and ultrahigh carrier mobility are two such major hallmarks of topological materials and often used as primary criteria for identifying new compounds belonging to this class. Recently, LaBi has emerged as a new system, which exhibits the a…
The emergence of topological order in graphene is in great demand for the realization of quantum spin Hall states. Recently, it is theoretically proposed that the spin textures of surface states in topological insulator can be directly transferred to graphene by means of proximity effect. Here we report the observations of the topological proximity effect in the graphene-topological insulator Bi2Se3 heterojunctions via magnetotransport measurements. The coupling between the p_z orbitals of graphene and the p orbitals of surface states on the Bi2Se3 bottom surface can be enhanced by applying pe…
Researches on anomalous Hall effect (AHE) have been lasting for a century to make clear the underlying physical mechanism. Generally, the AHE appears in magnetic materials, in which extrinsic process related to scattering effects and intrinsic contribution connected with Berry curvature are crucial. Recently, AHE has been counterintuitively observed in non-magnetic topological materials and attributed to the existence of Weyl points. However, the Weyl point scenario would lead to unsaturated AHE even in large magnetic fields and contradicts the saturation of AHE in several tesla (T) in experim…
Recently discovered Dirac and Weyl semimetals display unusual magnetoresistance phenomena, including a large, non-saturating, linear transverse magnetoresistance and a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance. The latter is often considered as evidence of fermions having a defined chirality. Classical mechanisms, due to disorder or non-uniform current injection, can however, also produce negative longitudinal magnetoresistance. Here, we report on magnetotransport measurements performed on epitaxial thin films of Cd3As2, a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal. Quasi-linear positive transverse magne…
As an intermediate state in the topological phase diagram, Dirac semimetals are of particular interest as a platform for studying topological phase transitions under external modulations. Despite a growing theoretical interest in this topic, it remains a substantial challenge to experimentally tune the system across topological phase transitions. Here, we investigate the Fermi surface evolution of Cd3As2 under high pressure through magnetotransport. A sudden change in Berry phase occurs at 1.3 GPa along with the unanticipated shrinkage of the Fermi surface, which occurs well below the structur…
Gray tin, also known as $α$-Sn, can be turned into a three-dimensional topological insulator (3D-TI) by strain and finite size effects. Such room temperature 3D-TI is peculiarly interesting for spintronics due to the spin-momentum locking along the Dirac cone (linear dispersion) of the surface states. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been used to investigate the dispersion close to the Fermi level in thin (0\,0\,1)-oriented epitaxially strained films of $α$-Sn, for different film thicknesses as well as for different capping layers (Al, AlO$_x$ and MgO). Indeed a proper cap…
