We compute and analyse the low-lying spectrum of 2+1 dimensional $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on a spatial torus of size $l\times l$ with twisted boundary conditions. This paper extends our previous work \cite{Perez:2013dra}. In that paper we studied the sector with non-vanishing electric flux and concluded that the energies only depend on the parameters through two combinations: $x=λN l /(4π)$ (with $λ$ the 't Hooft coupling) and the twist angle $\tilde θ$ defined in terms of the magnetic flux piercing the two-dimensional box. Here we made a more complete study and we are able to condense our results, obtained by non-perturbative lattice methods, into a simple expression which has important implications for the absence of tachyonic instabilities, volume independence and non-commutative field theory. Then we extend our study to the sector of vanishing electric flux. We conclude that the onset of the would-be large-volume glueball states occurs at an approximately fixed value of $x$, much before the stringy torelon states have become very massive.
We study one-loop corrections in scalar and gauge field theories on the non-commutative torus. For rational theta, Morita equivalence allows these theories to be reformulated in terms of ordinary theories on a commutative torus with twisted boundary conditions. UV/IR mixing does not lead to singularities, however there can be large corrections. In particular, gauge theories show tachyonic instabilities for some of the modes. We discuss their relevance to spontaneous Z_N x Z_N symmetry breaking in the Morita dual SU(N) theory due to electric flux condensation.
We present a novel finite-matrix formulation of gauge theories on a non-commutative torus. Unlike the previous formulation based on a map from a square matrix to a field on a discretized torus with periodic boundary conditions, our formulation is based on the algebraic characterization of the configuration space. This enables us to describe the twisted boundary conditions in terms of finite matrices and hence to realize the Morita equivalence at a fully regularized level. Matter fields in the fundamental representation turn out to be represented by rectangular matrices for twisted boundary con…
We review some recent results related to the notion of volume independence in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories. The topic is discussed in the context of gauge theories living on a d-dimensional torus with twisted boundary conditions. After a brief introduction reviewing the formalism for introducing gauge fields on a torus, we discuss how volume independence arises in perturbation theory. We show how, for appropriately chosen twist tensors, perturbative results to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling depend on a specific combination of the rank of the gauge group (N) and the periods of the torus (l) g…
Following the recent work of Connes, Douglas and Schwarz, we study the M(atrix) model compactified on a torus with a background of the three-form field. This model is given by a super Yang-Mills theory on a quantum torus. To consider twisted gauge field configurations, we construct twisted U(n) bundles on the quantum torus as a deformation of its classical counterpart. By properly taking into account membranes winding around the light-cone direction, we derive from the M(atrix) model the BPS spectrum which respects the full SL(2,Z)*SL(2,Z) U-duality in M theory.
We present the formulation of the bosonic Hamiltonian M2-brane compactified on a twice punctured torus following the procedure proposed in \cite{mpgm14}. In this work we analyse two possible metric choice, different from the one used in \cite{mpgm14}, over the target space and study some of the properties of the corresponding Hamiltonian.
Cohomological invariants of twisted wild character varieties as constructed by Boalch and Yamakawa are derived from enumerative Calabi-Yau geometry and refined Chern-Simons invariants of torus knots. Generalizing the untwisted case, the present approach is based on a spectral correspondence for meromorphic Higgs bundles with fixed conjugacy classes at the marked points. This construction is carried out for twisted wild character varieties associated to (l, kl-1) torus knots, providing a colored generalization of existing results of Hausel, Mereb and Wong as well as Shende, Treumann and Zaslow.
We describe how an approximation to the minimal energy Skyrme crystal can be obtained from the holonomy of a Yang-Mills instanton. The appropriate instanton is twisted on a four-torus and has instanton number equal to one half. It generates a Skyrme field with the correct topological and symmetry properties of the crystal. An explicit solution for the instanton is not known, but an analytical fit to numerical data is available and using this we obtain a Skyrme crystal whose energy is only 2 percent above that of the (numerically) known solution.
We study the planar equivalence of orbifold field theories on a small three-torus with twisted boundary conditions, generalizing the analysis of hep-th/0507267. The nonsupersymmetric orbifold models exhibit different large N dynamics from their supersymmetric "parent" counterparts. In particular, a moduli space of Abelian zero modes is lifted by an $O(N^2)$ potential in the "daughter" theories. We also find disagreement between the number of discrete vacua of both theories, due to fermionic zero modes in the parent theory, as well as the values of semiclassical tunneling contributions to fermi…
Using the Ocneanu quantum geometry of ADE diagrams (and of other diagrams belonging to higher Coxeter-Dynkin systems), we discuss the classification of twisted partition functions for affine and minimal models in conformal field theory and study several examples associated with the WZW, Virasoro and W_{3} cases.
Recently it has been demonstrated by Dienes and Mafi, that the physics of toroidal compactified models of extra dimensions can depend on the shape angle of the torus. Toroidal compactification has also recently been used as a regulator for numerical solutions of supersymmetric fields theories in 2+1 dimensions. The question is; does the shape angle of the torus also affect the physics in this situation? Clearly a numerical solution should be independent of the shape of the space we compactify on. We show that within the context of standard DLCQ, that toroidal compactification is only allowed f…
We review some of the most important results obtained over the years on the study of Yang-Mills fields on the four dimensional torus at the classical level.
It is shown that the lattice overlap correctly reproduces the chiral determinant on a two dimensional torus in the presence of nontrivial background Polyakov loop variables.
We report some preliminary results of our ongoing non-perturbative computation of the twisted 't Hooft running coupling in a particular set-up, using the gradient flow to define the coupling and step scaling techniques to compute it. For the computation we considered a pure gauge SU(3) theory in four dimensions, defined on the lattice on an asymmetrical torus endowed with twisted boundary conditions in a single plane, and related the energy scale of the coupling to an effective size combining the size of the torus and the rank of the gauge group. Additionally, we explore some of the effects of…
We propose a lattice formulation of three dimensional super Yang-Mills model with a twisted N=4 supersymmetry. The extended supersymmetry algebra of all the eight supercharges is fully and exactly realized on the lattice with a modified "Leibniz rule". The formulation we employ here is a three dimensional extension of manifestly gauge covariant method which was developed in our previous proposal of Dirac-Kaehler twisted N=2 super Yang-Mills on two dimensional lattice. The twisted N=4 supersymmetry algebra is geometrically realized on a three dimensional lattice with link supercharges and the u…
Employing a twisted superspace with eight supercharges, we describe an off-shell formulation of N=4 D=3 twisted super Yang-Mills in the continuum spacetime which underlies the recent proposal of N=4 D=3 twisted super Yang-Mills on a lattice (arXiv:0707.3533[hep-lat]). By a dimensional reduction from the N=2 D=4, we explore the two possible topological twists of N=4 D=3 and then show that the lattice formulation given in arXiv:0707.3533[hep-lat] is essentially categorized as the B-type. We also show that, amongst the two inequivalent twists of N=4 D=3, only the B-type SYM can be realized on the…
In arXiv:0902.4032 [hep-th] an O(D,D)-covariant sigma model describing the embedding of a closed world-sheet into the 2D-dimensional twisted torus was proposed. Such sigma models provide a universal description of string theory with target spaces related by the action of T-duality. In this article a six-dimensional toy example is studied in detail. Different polarisations of the six-dimensional target space give different three-dimensional string backgrounds including a nilmanifold with H-flux, a T-fold with R-flux and a new class of T-folds. Global issues and connections with the doubled toru…

The extended supersymmetry algebra of all eight supercharges is fully and exactly realized on the lattice with a modified "Leibniz rule". The formulation we employ here is a three dimensional extension of the manifestly gauge covariant method which was developed in our previous proposal of Dirac-Kähler twisted N=2 super Yang-Mills on a two dimensional lattice. The twisted N=4 supersymmetry algebra is geometrically realized on a three dimensional lattice with link supercharges and t…
We consider M-theory compactified on a twisted 7-torus with fluxes when all the seven antisymmetric tensor fields in four dimensions have been dualized into scalars and thus the E_{7(7)} symmetry is recovered. We find that the Scherk--Schwarz and flux gaugings define a ``dual'' gauge algebra, subalgbra of E_{7(7)}, where some of the generators are associated with vector fields which are dual to part of the original vector fields (deriving from the 3-form). In particular they are dual to those vector fields which have been ``eaten'' by the antisymmetric tensors in the original theory by the (an…
A necessary ingredient for our previous results on the form of the long distance effective action of the twisted lattice N=4 super Yang-Mills theory is the existence of a real space renormalization group which preserves the lattice structure, both the symmetries and the geometric interpretation of the fields. In this brief article we provide an explicit example of such a blocking scheme and illustrate its practicality in the context of a small scale Monte Carlo renormalization group calculation. We also discuss the implications of this result, and the possible ways in which to use it in order …
We study a torus-like compactification of type IIB maximally supersymmetric PP-wave background. As the most general case, we discuss a T^8 compactification of all the transverse directions. A nontrivial structure of the isometry group requires an additional light-like compactification. This additional S^1 fiber is twisted on the T^8. We determine the spectrum of closed strings in this twisted torus background and compute the thermal partition function.
We show that the real Baum-Connes conjecture for abelian groups, possibly twisted by a cocycle, explains the isomorphisms of (twisted) KR-groups that underlie all T-dualities of torus orientifold string theories.
We study a discretization of ${\cal N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theory which possesses a single exact supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing. This supersymmetry arises after a reformulation of the theory in terms of {\it twisted} fields. In this paper we derive the action of the other twisted supersymmetries on the component fields and study, using Monte Carlo simulation, a series of corresponding Ward identities. Our results for SU(2) and SU(3) support a restoration of these additional supersymmetries without fine tuning in the infinite volume continuum limit. Additionally we present evidence s…
We propose a lattice action for two dimensional super Yang-Mills theory with a twisted N=2 supersymmetry. The extended supersymmetry is fully and exactly realized on the lattice. The method employed is quite general and its extension to the N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions is briefly presented. The lattice has a new type of ``fermionic'' links, where odd Grassmann variables, supercharges and fermionic connections sit. The Leibniz rule is preserved on the lattice, although in a modified ``shifted'' form that takes into account the link nature of both derivatives and supercharges. Superfield…
Recently it has been shown how a topologically twisted version of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills may be discretized in such a way as to preserve one scalar supersymmetry at nonzero lattice spacing. The remaining fifteen supersymmetries are broken by terms of ${\cal O}(a)$ where $a$ is the lattice spacing. One would like to know whether these remaining supersymmetries are regained in the continuum limit $a \to 0$ and, if not, how much tuning of the couplings in the lattice action is required. In this paper we derive the form of these additional twisted supersymmetries by combining a set of discr…
We define supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on an arbitrary two-dimensional lattice (polygon decomposition) with preserving one supercharge. When a smooth Riemann surface $Σ_g$ with genus $g$ emerges as an appropriate continuum limit of the generic lattice, the discretized theory becomes topologically twisted $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $Σ_g$. If we adopt the usual square lattice as a special case of the discretization, our formulation is identical with Sugino's lattice model. Although the tuning of parameters is generally required while taking the continuum limit, t…
D0-brane theory on a torus with a nonvanishing B field is embedded into a string theory in the weak coupling limit. It is shown that the usual supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a noncommutative torus can not be the whole story. The Born-Infeld action survives the noncommutative torus limit.
In this work the correspondence between the semiclassical limit of the DOZZ quantum Liouville theory on the torus and the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the N=2* (Omega-deformed) U(2) super-Yang-Mills theory is used to propose new formulae for the accessory parameter of the Lame equation. This quantity is in particular crucial for solving the problem of uniformization of the one-punctured torus. The computation of the accessory parameters for torus and sphere is an open longstanding problem which can however be solved if one succeeds to derive an expression for the so-called classical Liouville…
We present fractional flux periodicity in the ground state of planar systems made of a square lattice whose boundary is compacted into a torus. The ground-state energy shows a fractional period of the fundamental unit of magnetic flux depending on the twist around the torus axis.
Following two different tracks, we arrive at a definition of Nahm's transformation valid for self-dual fields on the 4-dimensional torus with non-zero twist tensor. The transform is again a self-dual gauge field defined on a new torus and with non-zero twist tensor. It preserves the property of being an involution.
We formulate N=2 twisted super Yang-Mills theory with a gauged central charge by superconnection formalism in two dimensions. We obtain off-shell invariant supermultiplets and actions with and without constraints, which is in contrast with the off-shell invariant D=N=4 super Yang-Mills formulation with unavoidable constraints.
It is known that the T-dual of a circle bundle with H-flux (given by a Neveu-Schwarz 3-form) is the T-dual circle bundle with dual H-flux. However, it is also known that torus bundles with H-flux do not necessarily have a T-dual which is a torus bundle. A big puzzle has been to explain these mysterious "missing T-duals.'' Here we show that this problem is resolved using noncommutative topology. It turns out that every principal 2-torus-bundle with H-flux does indeed have a T-dual, but in the missing cases (which we characterize), the T-dual is non-classical and is a bundle of noncommutative to…
We consider maximally supersymmetric SU(N) Yang--Mills theory in Euclidean signature compactified on a flat two-dimensional torus with anti-periodic (`thermal') fermion boundary conditions imposed on one cycle. At large N, holography predicts that this theory describes certain black hole solutions in Type IIA and IIB supergravity, and we use lattice gauge theory to test this. Unlike the one-dimensional quantum mechanics case where there is only the dimensionless temperature to vary, here we emphasize there are two more parameters which determine the shape of the flat torus. While a rectangular…
We propose a twisted D=N=2 superspace formalism. The relation between the twisted super charges including the BRST charge, vector and pseudo scalar super charges and the N=2 spinor super charges is established. We claim that this relation is essentially related with the Dirac-Kähler fermion mechanism. We show that a fermionic bilinear form of twisted N=2 chiral and anti-chiral superfields is equivalent to the quantized version of BF theory with the Landau type gauge fixing while a bosonic bilinear form leads to the N=2 Wess-Zumino action. We then construct a Yang-Mills action described by the …
We show how to derive the supersymmetric orbifold lattices of Cohen et al. \cite{Cohen:2003xe,Cohen:2003qw} and Kaplan et al. \cite{Kaplan:2005ta} by direct discretization of an appropriate twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We examine in detail the four supercharge two dimensional theory and the theory with sixteen supercharges in four dimensions. The continuum limit of the latter theory is the well known Marcus twist of ${\cal N}=4$ Yang-Mills. The lattice models are gauge invariant and possess one exact supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing.
Recently, Okuyama and Sakai proposed a novel holomorphic anomaly equation for the partition function of 2d Yang-Mills theory on a torus, based on an anholomorphic deformation of the propagator in the bosonic formulation. Using the boson-fermion correspondence, we derive the formula for the deformed partition function in fermionic description and give a proof of the holomorphic anomaly equation.
We report on our ongoing computation of the perturbative running of the Yang-Mills coupling using gradient flow techniques. In particular, we use the gradient flow method with twisted boundary conditions to perform a perturbative expansion of the expectation value of the Yang-Mills energy density up to fourth order in the coupling at finite flow time. We regularise the resulting integrals using dimensional regularisation, and reproduce the universal coefficient of the 1/ε term in the relation between bare and renormalised couplings. The computation of the finite part leading to a determination…
Herein, we consider a topologically twisted version of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in five dimensions which was introduced by Witten in 2011. We consider this theory on a five manifold of the form M_4 x I for M_4 an oriented Riemannian four manifold. The complete and unique action of the theory in bulk is written down and is shown to be invariant under two scalar supersymmetries.
We propose a universal geometric formulation of gauged supergravity in terms of a twisted doubled torus. We focus on string theory (M-theory) reductions with generalized Scherk-Schwarz twists residing in the O(n,n) (E_{7(7)}) duality group. The set of doubled geometric fluxes, associated with the duality twists and identified naturally with the embedding tensor of gauged supergravity, captures all known fluxes, i.e. physical form fluxes, ordinary geometric fluxes, as well as their non-geometric counterparts. Furthermore, we propose a prescription for obtaining the effective geometry embedded i…
We show that the $D=11$ Supermembrane theory (M2-brane) compactified on a $M_9 \times T^2$ target space, with constant fluxes $C_{\pm}$ naturally incorporates the geometrical structure of a twisted torus. We extend the M2-brane theory to a formulation on a twisted torus bundle. It is consistently fibered over the world volume of the M2-brane. It can also be interpreted as a torus bundle with a nontrivial $U(1)$ connection associated to the fluxes. The structure group $G$ is the area preserving diffeomorphisms. The torus bundle is defined in terms of the monodromy associated to the isotopy clas…
We consider supergravity compactifications on 6-dimensional twisted tori, which are 5-torus fibrations of the circle. The motion of branes on such manifolds can lead to power-law potentials at low energy, that may be useful for inflation. We classify the possible low energy potentials one can obtain by wrapping branes on different cycles of the fibre. Turning to the problem of moduli stabilization in such models, we prove a no-go result for solutions with parametrically small cosmological constant, under certain assumptions for the orientifolds and D-branes. We also consider the role of discre…
We study the twisted N=4 super Yang-Mills theories in the Omega-background with the constant R-symmetry Wilson line gauge field. Based on the classification of topological twists of N=4 supersymmetry (the half, the Vafa-Witten and the Marcus twists), we construct the deformed off-shell supersymmetry associated with the scalar supercharges for these twists. We find that the Omega-deformed action is written in the exact form with respect to the scalar supercharges as in the undeformed case.
We show that certain isomorphisms of (twisted) KR-groups that underlie T-dualities of torus orientifold string theories have purely algebraic analogues in terms of algebraic K-theory of real varieties and equivalences of derived categories of (twisted) coherent sheaves. The most interesting conclusion is a kind of Mukai duality in which the "dual abelian variety" to a smooth projective genus-1 curve over R with no real points is (mildly) noncommutative.
After a brief review of matrix theory compactification leading to noncommutative supersymmetric Yang-Mills gauge theory, we present solutions for the fundamental and adjoint sections on a two-dimensional twisted quantum torus in two different gauges. We also give explicit transformations connecting different representations which have appeared in the literature. Finally we discuss the more mathematical concept of Morita equivalence of C*-algebras as it applies to our specific case.
Considering the scattering of massless open strings attached to a D2-brane living in the $B$ field background, we show that corresponding scattering upto the order of $\a'^2$ is exactly given by the gauge theory on noncommutative background, which is characterized by the Moyal bracket.
We investigate mass deformation of twisted superalgebra of U(N) super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories in several models and in several dimensions, motivated by the method formulated in [1]. We show that there are several ways to perform the deformation, if a model possesses four scalar supercharges except for two dimensional B-model. We also evaluate classical vacuum solutions of the potentials of scalar fields for each model. We then find that it is always possible to find fuzzy sphere solution in the theories.
We argue that Yang-Mills theory on noncommutative torus, expressed in the Fourrier modes, is described by a gauge theory in a usual commutative space, the gauge group being a generalization of the area-preserving diffeomorphisms to the noncommutative case. In this way, performing the loop calculation in this gauge theory in the continuum limit we show that this theory is {\it one loop renormalizable}, and discuss the UV and IR limits. The moduli space of the vacua of the noncommutative super Yang-Mills theories in (2+1) dimensions is discussed.
We investigate the large-$N$ asymptotics of the topologically twisted index of $\mathcal N=4$ SU($N$) Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on $T^2\times S^2$ and provide its holographic interpretation based on the black hole Farey tail. In the field theory side, we use the Bethe-Ansatz (BA) formula, which gives the twisted index of $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory as a discrete sum over Bethe vacua, to compute the large-$N$ asymptotics of the twisted index. In a dual $\mathcal N=2$ gauged STU model, we construct a family of 5d extremal solutions uplifted from the 3d black hole Farey tail, and compute the re…

We give a one-dimensional interpretation of the four-dimensional twisted N=1 superYang-Mills theory on a Kaehler manifold by performing an appropriate dimensional reduction. We prove the existence of a 6-generator superalgebra, which does not possess any invariant Lagrangian but contains two different subalgebras that determine the twisted and untwisted formulations of the N=1 superYang-Mills theory.
$\mathcal{N}=1$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory is an appealing theoretical framework that has been studied in the literature using different methods, including standard lattice simulations. Among these, the volume-reduced twisted Eguchi-Kawai model, endowed with one adjoint Majorana fermion, could play an important role in studying its large-$N$ limit via the Curci-Veneziano prescription. In this talk, we present our results on the analysis of the scale of the theory, performed via different methods based on purely gluonic observables as well as (quenched) fundamental mesons in the chiral limit. These…
We discuss the moduli space of flat connections of Yang-Mills theories formulated on T^3 x R, with periodic boundary conditions. When the gauge group is SO(N>=7), G_2, F_4, E_6, E_7 or E_8, the moduli space consists of more than one component.
It is shown that the dimensional reduction of the N_T=2, D=3 Blau-Thompson model to D=2, i.e., the novel topological twist of N=8, D=2 super Yang-Mills theory, provides an example of a Hodge-type cohomological theory. In that theory the generators of the topological shift, co-shift and gauge symmetry, together with a discrete duality operation, are completely analogous to the de Rham cohomology operators and the Hodge *-operation.
We study the relations between two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the torus, topological string theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold whose local geometry is the sum of two line bundles over the torus, and Chern-Simons theory on torus bundles. The chiral partition function of the Yang-Mills gauge theory in the large N limit is shown to coincide with the topological string amplitude computed by topological vertex techniques. We use Yang-Mills theory as an efficient tool for the computation of Gromov-Witten invariants and derive explicitly their relation with Hurwitz numbers of the torus. We calcul…
Twisted compactification of the 6d N=(2,0) theories on a punctured Riemann surface give a large class of 4d N=1 and N=2 gauge theories, called class S. We argue that nonperturbative dynamics of class S theories are described by 5d maximal Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) twisted on the Riemann surface. In a sense, twisted 5d SYM might be regarded as a "Lagrangian" for class S theories on R^{1,2} times S^1. First, we show that twisted 5d SYM gives generalized Hitchin's equations which was proposed recently. Then, we discuss how to identify chiral operators with quantities in twisted 5d SYM. Mesons, or ho…
We characterize the correspondence between the twisted $N=2$ super-Yang-Mills theory and the Baulieu-Singer topological theory quantized in the self-dual Landau gauges. While the first is based on an on-shell supersymmetry, the second is based on an off-shell Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin symmetry. Because of the equivariant cohomology, the twisted $N=2$ in the ultraviolet regime and Baulieu-Singer theories share the same observables, the Donaldson invariants for 4-manifolds. The triviality of the Gribov copies in the Baulieu-Singer theory in these gauges shows that working in the instanton moduli…
