Transition metal perovskite chalcogenides, a class of materials with rich tunability in functionalities, are gaining increased attention as candidate materials for renewable energy applications. Perovskite oxides are considered excellent n-type thermoelectric materials. Compared to oxide counterparts, we expect the chalcogenides to possess more favorable thermoelectric properties such as lower lattice thermal conductivity and smaller band gap, making them promising material candidates for high temperature thermoelectrics. Thus, it is necessary to study the thermal properties of these materials in detail, especially thermal stability, to evaluate their potential. In this work, we report the synthesis and thermal stability study of five compounds, α-SrZrS$_3$, β-SrZrS$_3$, BaZrS$_3$, Ba$_2$ZrS$_4$, and Ba$_3$Zr$_2$S$_7$. These materials cover several structural types including distorted perovskite, needle-like, and Ruddlesden-Popper phases. Differential scanning calorimeter and thermo-gravimetric analysis measurements were performed up to 1200°C in air. Structural and chemical characterizations such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and energy dispersive analytical X-ray spectroscopy were performed on all the samples before and after the heat treatment to understand the oxidation process. Our studies show that perovskite chalcogenides possess excellent thermal stability in air at least up to 600°C.
Barium zirconium sulfide (BaZrS3) is an earth-abundant and environmentally friendly chalcogenide perovskite with promising properties for various energy conversion applications. Recently, sulfurization of oxide precursors has been suggested as a viable solution for effective synthesis, especially from the perspective of circumventing the difficulty of handling alkali earth metals. In this work, we explore in detail the synthesis of BaZrS3 from Ba-Zr-O oxide precursor films sulfurized at temperatures ranging from 700 °C to 1000 °C. We propose a formation mechanism of BaZrS3 based on a two-step …
We demonstrate the making of BaZrS3 thin films by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). BaZrS3 forms in the orthorhombic distorted-perovskite structure with corner-sharing ZrS6 octahedra. The single-step MBE process results in films smooth on the atomic scale, with near-perfect BaZrS3 stoichiometry and an atomically-sharp interface with the LaAlO3 substrate. The films grow epitaxially via two, competing growth modes: buffered epitaxy, with a self-assembled interface layer that relieves the epitaxial strain, and direct epitaxy, with rotated-cube-on-cube growth that accommodates the large lattice consta…
The study shows that the air-derived metal enrichment (up to 2.3 g Zn kg-1, 1.1 g Pb kg-1, and 62 mg Cd kg-1) is retained in a thin layer (~30 cm) around 10-15 cm below the peat surface. A combination of focused ion beam (FIB) technology and scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy reveals that micrometric spheroids are most characteristic for ZnS and (Zn,Cd)S, although the sulfides readily form pseudomorphs after different plant tissues resulting in much larger aggregates. The aggregates have a complex polycrystalline sphalerite structure much more advanced than typically obt…
Bulk MoS2, a prototypical layered transition-metal dichalcogenide, is an indirect band gap semiconductor. Reducing its size to a monolayer, MoS2 undergoes a transition to the direct band semiconductor. We support this experimental observation by first principles calculations and show that quantum confinement in layered d-electron dichalcogenides results in tuning the electronic structure at the nanoscale. We further studied the properties of related TmS2 nanolayers (Tm = W, Nb, Re) and show that the isotopological WS2 exhibits similar electronic properties, while NbS2 and ReS2 remain metallic …
We derive a compact matrix expression for the linear thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) for a general orthorhombic system which relates the elastic properties and the integrated quantities based on deformation and mode dependent Gruneisen parameters and mode dependent heat capacities. The density of Gruneisen parameters $Γ(ν)$ as a function of frequency $ν$, weighted by the number of phonon modes, is introduced and found to be insightful in interpreting the TEC results. Using density-functional perturbation theory and Gruneisen formalism for thermal expansion, we illustrate the general usef…
Electrocatalysts based on transition metal sulfides are drawing accelerating concerns in renewable energy research because of their intrinsically excellent activities towards both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. To date, considerable efforts are made to improve the performance of these catalysts, but ignoring the improper synthesis strategy would incur additional cost to the catalyst. Herein, a convenient, one-step anodization method is developed for fast construction of cobalt sulfides. Without any high-temperature or long-time treatment, mesoporous CoSx is self-gro…
Solution-processable, two-dimensional semiconductors are promising optoelectronic materials which could find application in low-cost solar cells. Lead sulfide nanocrystals raised attention since the effective band gap can be adapted over a wide range by electronic confinement and observed multi-exciton generation promises higher efficiencies. We report on the influence of the contact metal work function on the properties of transistors based on individual two-dimensional lead sulfide nanosheets. Using palladium we observed mobilities of up to 31 cm2/Vs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that asymmet…
Using density-functional theory calculations, we analyze the optical absorption properties of lead (Pb)-free metal halide perovskites (AB$^{2+}$X$_3$) and double perovskites (AB$^+$B$^{3+}$X$_6$) (A = Cs or monovalent organic ion, B$^{2+}$ = non-Pb divalent metal, B$^+$ = monovalent metal, B$^{3+}$ = trivalent metal, X = halogen). We show that, if B$^{2+}$ is not Sn or Ge, Pb-free metal halide perovskites exhibit poor optical absorptions because of their indirect bandgap nature. Among the nine possible types of Pb-free metal halide double perovskites, six have direct bandgaps. Of these six typ…
Group-10 transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are rising in prominence within the highly innovative field of 2D materials. While PtS2 has been investigated for potential electronic applications, due to its high charge-carrier mobility and strong layer-dependent bandgap, it has proven to be one of the more difficult TMDs to synthesise. In contrast to most TMDs, Pt has a significantly more stable monosulfide, the non-layered PtS. The existence of two stable platinum sulfides, sometimes within the same sample, has resulted in much confusion between the materials in the literature. Neither of t…
First-row transition metal oxides and chalcogenides have been found to rival the performance of precious metal-based catalysts for the interconversion of water and O$_2$. The high lability of the first-row transition metal ions leads to surface dynamics under the conditions of catalysis and results in active site structures distinct from those expected by surface termination of the bulk lattice. While these surface transformations have been well-characterized on many metal oxides, the surface dynamics of heavier chalcogenides under electrocatalytic conditions are largely unknown. We recently r…
Owing to its superior visible light absorption and high chemical stability, chalcogenide perovskite barium zirconium sulfide has attracted significant attention in the past few years as a potential alternative to hybrid halide perovskites for optoelectronics. However, the high processing temperatures of BaZrS3 thin films at above 1000 C severely limits their potential for device applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of BaZrS3 thin films at temperatures as low as 500 C, by changing the chemical reaction pathway. The single phase BaZrS3 thin film was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Ra…
Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) are the building blocks for the future opto-electronic devices, and other energy-harvesting applications. Although the energy demand has been increasing, energy sources are diminishing. Hydrogen, green energy source, is used in space shuttles and other transportation means. The hydrogen production using semiconductors such as TiO2 suffers from several limitations, and hence, alterative techniques for hydrogen production are desired. Recently, photocatalysis using different nanostructures has been studied.1-6 In this project, we have studied the catalytic activi…
A suite measurements of the electrical, thermal, and vibrational properties are conducted on palladium sulfide (PdS) in order to investigate its thermoelectric performance. The tetragonal structure with the space group $P$42/$m$ for PdS is determined from X-ray diffraction measurement. The unique temperature dependence of mobility suggests that acoustic phonons and ion impurity scattering are two dominant scattering mechanisms within the compound. The obtained power factor of $27$ $μ$Wcm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ at 800 K is the largest value in the remaining transition-metal sulfides studied so far. The…
Organo-lead halide perovskite materials have opened up a great opportunity to develop high performance photodetectors because of their superior optoelectronic properties. The main issue with perovskite-only photodetector is severe carrier recombination. Integration of perovskite with high-conductive materials such as graphene or transition metal sulfides certainly improved the photoresponsivity. However, achieving high overall performance remains a challenge. Here, an improved photodetector is constructed by perovskite quantum dots (QDs) and atomic layer deposited (ALD) ultrathin TiO2 films. T…
Oxides have many potentially desirable characteristics for thermoelectric applications, including low cost and stability at high temperatures, but thus far there are few known high $zT$ $n$-type oxide thermoelectrics. In this work, we use high-throughput first principles calculations to screen transition metal oxides, nitrides, and sulfides for candidate materials with high power factors and low thermal conductivity. We find a variety of promising materials, and we investigate these materials in detail in order to understand the mechanisms that cause them to have high power factors. These mate…
The spin Hall effect (SHE) is highly promising for spintronic applications, and the design of materials with large SHE can enable ultra-low power memory technology. Recently, 5d-transition metal oxides have been shown to demonstrate a large SHE. Here we report large values of SHE in four 5d-transition metal anti-perovskites which makes these anti-perovskites promising spintronic materials. We demonstrate that these effects originate in the mixing of dx2-y2 and dxy orbitals caused by spin orbit coupling.
Over the last few years of the heyday of hybrid halide perovskites, so many metal cations additives have been tested to improve their optoelectronic properties that it is already difficult to find an element that has not yet been tried. In general, the variety of these approaches is united under the name "doping", however, there is currently no clear understanding of the mechanisms of the influence of the metal ion additives on the properties of the lead halide perovskite materials. For many ions there is even no consensus on the most fundamental questions: what lattice position does a given i…
Perovskite metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as potential candidates for multiferroicity. However, the compounds synthesized so far possess only weak ferromagnetism and low polarization. Additionally, the very low magnetic transition temperatures ($T_c$) also pose a challenge to the application of the materials. We have computationally designed a mixed metal perovskite MOF -[C(NH2)3][(Cu0.5Mn0.5)(HCOO)3]- that is predicted to have magnetization two orders of magnitude larger than its parent ([C(NH2)3][Cu(HCOO)3]), a significantly larger polarization (9.9 μC/cm2), and an enh…
We report on atomic ordering of B-site transition-metals and magnetic properties of epitaxial La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films grown by pulsed-laser deposition under various conditions. The highest ordered sample exhibited a fraction of antisite-disorder of only 0.05 and a saturation magnetization of ~2μ_{B} per formula unit at 5 K. The result is consistent with the antiferromagnetic ordering of local spin moment (3d^{3}_{\downarrow}3d^{5}_{\uparrow}; S = -3/2+5/2 = 1). Therefore, the magnetic ground state of La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite that has been long debate is unambiguously revealed to b…
Metal halide perovskite semiconductors have outstanding optoelectronic properties. Although these perovskites are defect-tolerant electronically, defects hamper their long-term stability and cause degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are an important tool to unravel the microscopic structures of defects, but results suffer from the different approximations used in the DFT functionals. In the case of metal halide perovskites, qualitatively different results have been reported with different functionals, either predicting vacancy or interstitial point defects to be most domi…
Transition-metal perovskite oxides constitute a series of functional material systems for electronics, catalysis and energy-conversion processes, in which oxygen migration and evolution play a key role. However, the stable metal-oxygen (M-O) bond forms large energy barrier inhibiting ion diffusion. Therefore, seeking efficient and facile approaches to accelerate oxygen kinetics has become a significant issue. Here, the interaction (interfacial charge transfer and cooperative bonding) between noble metal (Pt, Ag) and perovskites oxide (SrCoO3-delta) is employed to weaken (M-O) bond and decrease…
Based on first-principles calculations, we show that chemically active metal ns2 lone pairs play an important role in exciton relaxation and dissociation in low-dimensional halide perovskites. We studied excited-state properties of several recently discovered luminescent all-inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic zero-dimensional (0D) Sn and Pb halides. The results show that, despite the similarity in ground-state electronic structure between Sn and Pb halide perovskites, the chemically more active Sn2+ lone pair leads to stronger excited-state structural distortion and larger Stokes shift in …
By applying Wannier-based extended Kugel-Khomskii model, we carry out first-principles calculations and electronic structure analysis to understand the spin-phonon coupling effect in transition-metal perovskites. We demonstrate the successful application of our approach to SrMnO$_3$ and BiFeO$_3$. We show that both the electron orbitals under crystal field splitting and the electronic configuration should be taken into account in order to understand the large variances of spin-phonon coupling effects among various phonon modes as well as in different materials.
Owing to their high energy-conversion efficiency and inexpensive fabrication routes, solar cells based on metal-organic halide perovskites have rapidly gained prominence as a disruptive technology. An attractive feature of perovskite absorbers is the possibility of tailoring their properties by changing the elemental composition through the chemical precursors. In this context, rational in silico design represents a powerful tool for mapping the vast materials landscape and accelerating discovery. Here we show that the optical band gap of metal-halide perovskites, a key design parameter for so…
There are recent investigations regarding tandem solar cells with a top perovskite cell and a bottom silicon one with a potential of > 25% power conversion efficiency. Because of still high production costs of silicon cells it is believed that this tandem cell does not satisfy future requirements. Here the construction of a low-cost FAPbI3 twin solar cell is proposed with assumed PCE of 30%. With an ingenious rear illumination even 50% bifacial power conversion efficiency should be feasible. Importantly, a single twin cell can deliver the minimum potential difference of 1.7 V to conduct water …
Solar cells based on metal-halide perovskite absorber layers have resulted in outstanding photovoltaic devices with long non-radiative lifetimes as a crucial feature enabling high efficiencies. Long non-radiative lifetimes occur if the transfer of the energy of the electron-hole pair into vibrational energy is slow, due to, e.g., a low density of defects, weak electron phonon coupling or the release of a large number of phonons needed for a single transition. Here, we discuss the implications of the known material properties of metal-halide perovskites (such as permittivities, phonon energies …
Binary transition metal chalcogenides have attracted increasing attention for their unique structural and electronic properties. High pressure is powerful tool for tuning their crystal structure and electronic structure away from their pristine states. In this work, we systematically studied the in situ structural and optical behavior of silver sulfide (Ag2S) under pressure by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Infrared (IR) spectroscopy measurements in a diamond anvil cell. Upon compression, Ag2S undergoes structural symmetrization from monoclinic to orthorhombic, represented by the decrease of angle…
Lead-based halide perovskites are emerging as the most promising class of materials for next generation optoelectronics. However, despite the enormous success of lead-halide perovskite solar cells, the issues of stability and toxicity are yet to be resolved. Here we report on the computational design and the experimental synthesis of a new family of Pb-free inorganic halide double-perovskites based on bismuth or antimony and noble metals. Using first-principles calculations we show that this hitherto unknown family of perovskites exhibits very promising optoelectronic properties, such as tunab…
The hybrid perovskites are coordination frameworks with the same topology as the inorganic perovskites, but with properties driven by different chemistry, including host-framework hydrogen bonding. Like the inorganic perovskites, these materials exhibit many different phases, including structures with potentially exploitable functionality. However, far less is known about their behaviour under pressure. We have studied the structures of of manganese and cobalt guanidinium formate under pressure using single-crystal X-ray and powder neutron diffraction. Remarkably, when pressure reduces these m…
The competition between corner, edge and face-sharing octahedral networks is a cause of phase inhomogeneity in metal halide perovskite thin-films. Here we probe the charged iodine vacancy distribution and transport at the junction between cubic and hexagonal polytypes of CsPbI$_3$ from first-principles materials modelling. We predict a lower defect formation energy in the face-sharing regions, which correlates with a longer Pb$-$I bond length and causes a million-fold increase in local defect concentration. These defects are predicted to be more mobile in the face-sharing regions with a reduce…
Strain is known to greatly influence low temperature oxygen electrocatalysis on noble metal films, leading to significant enhancements in bifunctional activity essential for fuel cells and metal-air batteries. However, its catalytic impact on transition metal oxide thin films, such as perovskites, is not widely understood. Here, we epitaxially strain the conducting perovskite LaNiO3 to systematically determine its influence on both the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction. Uniquely, we found that compressive strain could significantly enhance both reactions, yielding a bifunctional c…
Perovskite photovoltaics (PVs) have attracted attention because of their excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE). Critical issues related to large area PV performance, reliability and lifetime need to be addressed. Here, we show that doped metal oxides can provide ideal electron selectivity, improved reliability and stability for perovskite PVs. We report p-i-n perovskite PVs with device areas ranging from 0.09cm2 to 0.5cm2 incorporating a thick aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) electron selective contact with hysteresis-free PCE of over 13% and high fill factor values in the range of 80%. A…
Recently an antiferromagnetic metal phase has been proposed in double perovskites materials like Sr$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$ (SFMO), when electron doped. This material has been found to change from half-metallic ferromagnet to antiferromagnetic metal (AFM) upon La-overdoping. The original proposition of such an AFM phase was made for clean samples, but the experimental realization of La-overdoped SFMO has been found to contain a substantial fraction of antisite defects. A phase segregation into alternate Fe and Mo rich regions was observed. In this paper we propose a possible scenario in which this ty…
The outstanding optoelectronics and photovoltaic properties of metal halide perovskites, including high carrier motilities, low carrier recombination rates, and the tunable spectral absorption range are attributed to the unique electronic properties of these materials. While DFT provides reliable structures and stabilities of perovskites, it performs poorly in electronic structure prediction. The relativistic GW approximation has been demonstrated to be able to capture electronic structure accurately, but at an extremely high computational cost. Here we report efficient and accurate band gap c…
An extended study on PdS is carried out with the measurements of the resistivity, Hall coefficient, Raman scattering, and X-ray diffraction at high pressures up to 42.3 GPa. With increasing pressure, superconductivity is observed accompanying with a structural phase transition at around 19.5 GPa. The coexistence of semiconducting and metallic phases observed at normal state is examined by the Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction between 19.5 and 29.5 GPa. After that, only the metallic normal state maintains with an almost constant superconducting transition temperature. The similar evolution…
Extraordinary electronic phases can form in artificial oxide heterostructures, which will provide a fertile ground for new physics and also give rise to novel device functions. Based on a systematic first-principles density functional theory study of the magnetic and electronic properties of the (111) superlattices (ABO3)2/(AB'O3)10 of 4d and 5d transition metal perovskite (B = Ru, Rh, Ag, Re, Os, Ir, Au; AB'O3 = LaAlO3, SrTiO3), we demonstrate that due to quantum confinement, bilayers (LaBO3)2 (B = Ru, Re, Os) and (SrBO3)2 (B = Rh, Os, Ir) are ferromagnetic with ordering temperatures up to ro…
Perovskite structured transition metal oxides are important technological materials for catalysis and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Their functionality often depends on oxygen diffusivity and mobility through complex oxide heterostructures, which can be significantly impacted by structural and chemical modifications, such as doping. Further, when utilized within electrochemical cells, interfacial reactions with other components (e.g. Ni- and Cr-based alloy electrodes and interconnects) can influence the perovskite's reactivity and ion transport, leading to complex dependencies that are d…
Highly-efficient solar cells containing lead halide perovskites are expected to revolutionize sustainable energy production in the coming years. Combining these next-generation solar panels with agriculture, can optimize land-use, but brings new risks in case of leakage into the soil. Perovskites are generally assumed to be toxic because of the lead (Pb), but experimental evidence to support this prediction is scarce. We used Arabidopsis thaliana to test the toxicity of the lead-based perovskite MAPbI3 (MA = CH3NH3) and several of its precursors in plants. Our results show that MAPbI3 severely…
From the spin polarized density functional total energy calculations, we shown that the ground state of cubic perovskite RbMnF$_3$ is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator due to the super-exchange mechanism, in agreement with the other theoretical and experimental results. After tetragonal distortion along the c-axis, keeping the predicted volume, our results indicated that the strain-induced magnetic phase transition from an AFM insulator to a half metallic ferromagnetic (HM-FM) state is available by the tetragonal distortion due to the insulator -- half metallic transition. The predicted ele…
The discovery of double perovskites A2B(I)B(III)X6 (A=monovalent cation; B(I)/B(III) = metal cation; X = halogen) as Pb(II)-free alternatives has attracted widespread attention, making it possible to introduce d-block metal cations (e.g., d0 and d10) into halide perovskites. However, at present, there are quite limited insights into the underlying bonding orbitals for d-block metal cation-based halide perovskites. Here, we present an orbital engineering strategy to construct two-dimensional (2D) electronic structures in three-dimensional (3D) halide perovskites by rationally controlling the d …
The long carrier lifetime and defect tolerance in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are major contributors to the superb performance of MHP optoelectronic devices. Large polarons were reported to be responsible for the long carrier lifetime. Yet microscopic mechanisms of the large polaron formation including the so-called phonon melting, are still under debate. Here, time-of-flight (TOF) inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments and first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the lattice vibrations (or phonon dynamics) in methylammonium lead io…
Metal halide perovskites exhibit a materials physics that is distinct from traditional inorganic and organic semiconductors. While materials such as CH3NH3PbI3 are non-magnetic, the presence of heavy elements (Pb and I) in a non-centrosymmetric crystal environment result in a significant spin-splitting of the frontier electronic bands through the Rashba-Dresselhaus effect. We show, from a combination of \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics, density-functional theory, and relativistic quasi-particle \textit{GW} theory, that the nature (magnitude and orientation) of the band splitting depends o…
Metal halide perovskites represent a flourishing area of research, driven by both their potential application in photo-voltaics and optoelectronics, and for the fundamental science underpinning their unique optoelectronic properties. The advent of colloidal methods for the synthesis of halide perovskite nanocrystals has brought to the attention inter-esting aspects of this new type of materials, above all their defect-tolerance. This review aims to provide an updated survey of this fast-moving field, with a main focus on their colloidal synthesis. We examine the chemistry and the ca-pability o…

After more than a century of studies on the optical properties of Bi3+ ions, the assignment of the nature of the emissions and the bands of the absorption spectra remain ambiguous. Here, we report an insight into the spectroscopy of Bi3+-activated CaMO3 perovskites (M = Zr, Sn, and Ti), discussing the factors driving the metal-to-metal charge transfer and sp -> s2 transitions. With the aim to figure out the whole scenario, a combined experimental and theoretical approach is employed. The comparison between the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence emissions with the temperature depen…
The mechanisms that drive metal-to-insulator transitions (MIT) in correlated solids are not fully understood. For example, the perovskite (PV) SrCoO3 is a FM metal while the oxygen-deficient (n-doped) brownmillerite (BM) SrCoO2.5 is an anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) insulator. Given the magnetic and structural transitions that accompany the MIT, the driver for such a MIT transition is unclear. We also observe that the perovskite metals LaNiO3, SrFeO3, and SrCoO3 also undergo MIT when n-doped via high-to-low valence compositional changes. Also, pressurizing the insulating BM SrCoO2.5 phase, drives a …
