The mechanisms that drive metal-to-insulator transitions (MIT) in correlated solids are not fully understood. For example, the perovskite (PV) SrCoO3 is a FM metal while the oxygen-deficient (n-doped) brownmillerite (BM) SrCoO2.5 is an anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) insulator. Given the magnetic and structural transitions that accompany the MIT, the driver for such a MIT transition is unclear. We also observe that the perovskite metals LaNiO3, SrFeO3, and SrCoO3 also undergo MIT when n-doped via high-to-low valence compositional changes. Also, pressurizing the insulating BM SrCoO2.5 phase, drives a gap closing. Using DFT and correlated diffusion Monte Carlo approaches we demonstrate that the ABO3 perovskites most prone to MIT are self hole-doped materials, reminiscent of a negative charge-transfer system. Upon n-doping away from the negative-charge transfer metallic phase, an underlying charge-lattice (or e-phonon) coupling drives the system to a bond-disproportionated gapped state, thereby achieving ligand hole passivation at certain sites only, leading to charge-disproportionated states. The size of the gap opened is correlated with the size of the hole-filling at these ligand sites. This suggests that the interactions driving the gap opening to realize a MIT even in correlated metals is the charge-transfer energy, but it couples with the underlying phonons to enable the transition to the insulating phase. Other orderings (magnetic, charge, etc.) driven by weaker interactions are secondary and may assist gap openings at small dopings, but its the charge-transfer energy that predominantly determines the bandgap, with a negative energy preferring the metallic phase. This n-doping can be achieved by modulations in stoichiometry or composition or pressure. Hence, controlling the amount of the ligand-hole is key in controlling MIT. We compare our predictions to experiments where possible.
Understanding the intrinsic charge transport in organolead halide perovskites is essential for the development of high-efficiency photovoltaics and other optoelectronic devices. Despite the rapid advancement of the organolead halide perovskite in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications, the intrinsic charge carrier transport in these materials remains elusive partly due to the difficulty of fabricating electrical devices and obtaining good electrical contact. Here, we report the fabrication of organolead halide perovskite microplates with monolayer graphene as low barrier electrical conta…
From the spin polarized density functional total energy calculations, we shown that the ground state of cubic perovskite RbMnF$_3$ is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator due to the super-exchange mechanism, in agreement with the other theoretical and experimental results. After tetragonal distortion along the c-axis, keeping the predicted volume, our results indicated that the strain-induced magnetic phase transition from an AFM insulator to a half metallic ferromagnetic (HM-FM) state is available by the tetragonal distortion due to the insulator -- half metallic transition. The predicted ele…
Magnetic insulators with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) play a key role in exploring pure spin current phenomena and developing ultralow-dissipation spintronic devices, thereby it is highly desirable to develop new material platforms. Here we report epitaxial growth of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO)-SrIrO3 (SIO) composite oxide films (LSMIO) with different crystalline orientations fabricated by sequential two-target ablation process using pulsed laser deposition. The LSMIO films exhibit high crystalline quality with homogeneous mixture of LSMO and SIO at atomic level. Ferrimagnetic and …
Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal oxide perovskites greatly expand the field of available 2D multifunctional material systems. Here, based on density functional theory calculations, we predicted the presence of ferromagnetism orders accompanying with an insulator-metal phase transition in bilayer $KNbO_{3}$ and $KTaO_{3}$ by applying strain engineering and/or external electric field. Our results will contribute to the applications of few-layer transition metal oxide perovskites in the emerging spintronics and straintronics.
We predict a new class of topological crystalline insulators (TCI) in the anti-perovskite material family with the chemical formula A$_3$BX. Here the nontrivial topology arises from band inversion between two $J=3/2$ quartets, which is described by a generalized Dirac equation for a "Dirac octet". Our work suggests that anti-perovskites are a promising new venue for exploring the cooperative interplay between band topology, crystal symmetry and electron correlation.
We present a detailed study of a model for strain-induced metal-insulator phase coexistence in perovskite manganites. Both nanoscale and mesoscale inhomogeneities are self-consistently described using atomic scale modes and their associated constraint equations. We also examine the stability of domain configurations against uniform and nonuniform modifications of domain walls. Our results show that the long range interactions between strain fields and the complex energy landscape with multiple metastable states play essential roles in stabilizing metal-insulator phase coexistence, as observed …
Magnetic insulators have been intensively studied for over 100 years, and they, in particular ferrites, are considered to be the cradle of magnetic exchange interactions in solids. Their wide range of applications include microwave devices and permanent magnets . They are also suitable for spintronic devices owing to their high resistivity, low magnetic damping, and spin-dependent tunneling probabilities. The Curie temperature is the crucial factor determining the temperature range in which any ferri/ferromagnetic system remains stable. However, the record Curie temperature has stood for over …
Perovskite structure is one of the five symmetry families suitable for exhibiting topological insulator phase. However, none of the halides and oxides stabilizing in this structure exhibit the same. Through density functional calculations on cubic perovskites (CsSnX$_3$ ; X = Cl, Br, and I), we predict a band insulator -- Dirac semimetal -- topological insulator phase transition with uniform compression. With the aid of a Slater-Koster tight binding Hamiltonian, we show that, apart from the valence electron count, the band topology of these perovksites is determined by five parameters involvin…
Polycrystalline Sr$_3$OsO$_6$, which is an ordered double-perovskite insulator, is synthesized via solid-state reaction under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions of 1200 $^\circ$C and 6 GPa. The synthesis enables us to conduct a comparative study of the bulk form of Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ toward revealing the driving mechanism of 1000 K ferromagnetism, which has recently been discovered for epitaxially grown Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ films. Unlike the film, the bulk is dominated by antiferromagnetism rather than ferromagnetism. Therefore, robust ferromagnetic order appears only when Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ is unde…
We present transport and thermal data for the quadruple-perovskites MCu3(Ti1-xRux)4O12 where 0 < x < 1. A metal-insulator transition (MIT) occurs for Ru concentrations x~0.75. At the same time, the Cu2+ antiferromagnetic state is destroyed and it's magnetic entropy suppressed by Ru on a 1:1 basis. This implies that each Ru transfers an electron to a Cu ion and thus the MIT correlates with filling the Cu 3d shell. The Cu spin entropy in this strongly correlated electron material provides a unique probe among MIT systems.
The centrosymmetric halide perovskites undergo a continuous phase transition from a normal insulator to a topological insulator at the critical value of strain. Contrarily, in noncentrosymmetric halide perovskites, this phase transition is discontinuous. The noncentrosymmetry does not stabilize the gapless state, causing a discontinuity in the bandgap. We have employed the density functional theory and Slater-Koster formalism-based tight-binding Hamiltonian studies to understand the evolution of band topology under the compressive strain in the halide perovskites. Our study shows that both cub…
Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites have shown remarkable optoelectronic properties (1-3), believed to originate from correlated motion of charge carriers and the polar lattice forming large polarons (4-7). Few experimental techniques are capable of probing these correlations directly, requiring simultaneous sub-meV energy and femtosecond temporal resolution after absorption of a photon (8). Here we use transient multi-THz spectroscopy, sensitive to the internal motions of charges within the polaron, to temporally and energetically resolve the coherent coupling of charges to longitudin…
Epitaxial strain has been shown to drive structural phase transitions along with novel functionalities in perovskite-based thin-films. Aliovalent doping at the A-site can drive an insulator-to-metal and magnetic transitions in perovskites along with a variety of interesting structural and electronic phenomena. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate here, how coupling epitaxial strain with A-site hole doping in a multiferroic double perovskite, Bi2FeCrO6, could lead to mitigation of issues related to anti-site defects and lowered magnetisation in thin-films of the material. We also…
We report inelastic light scattering from underdamped plasmons in azetidinium lead bromide (AzPbBr3). The plasmons are very strongly temperature dependent and serve as a soft mode for the semiconductor-insulator phase transition near TC » 150 K, demonstrating a continuous decrease in hole concentration np(T) by at least a factor of four and implying a nearly tricritical transition. The plasmon frequency and linewidth agree with independent measurements, and the impedance analysis reveals a frequency dependence (modelled by a constant phase element, CPE) that can be identified as due to electro…
The two-dimensional layered perovskite Sr2IrO4 was proposed to be a spin-orbit Mott insulator, where the effect of Hubbard interaction is amplified on a narrow J_{eff} = 1/2 band due to strong spin-orbit coupling. On the other hand, the three-dimensional orthorhombic perovskite (Pbnm) SrIrO3 remains metallic. To understand the physical origin of the metallic state and possible transitions to insulating phases, we construct a tight-binding model for SrIrO3. The band structure possesses a line node made of J_{eff} = 1/2 bands below the Fermi level. As a consequence, instability towards magnetic …
Lead-halide perovskites attracted attention as materials for high-efficiency solar cells and light emitting applications. Among their attributes are solution processability, high absorbance in the visible spectral range and defect tolerance, as manifested in long photocarrier lifetimes and diffusion lengths. The microscopic origin of photophysical properties of perovskites is, however, still unclear and under debate. Here, we have observed an interesting universal scaling behavior in a series of (hybrid and all-inorganic) perovskite single crystals investigated via simultaneous measurements of…
We report on a Ni L$_{2,3}$ edges x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites. These compounds exhibit a metal to insulator ($MI$) transition as temperature decreases. The L$_{3}$ edge presents a clear splitting in the insulating state, associated to a less hybridized ground state. Using charge transfer multiplet calculations, we establish the importance of the crystal field and 3d spin-orbit coupling to create a mixed-spin ground state. We explain the $MI$ transition in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites in terms of modifications in the Ni$^{3+}$ crystal field splitting that induc…
Newly synthesized perovskite NaOsO3 shows Curie-Weiss metallic nature at high temperature and suddenly goes into an antiferromagnetically insulating state at 410 K on cooling. Electronic specific heat at the low temperature limit is absent, indicating that the band gap fully opens. In situ observation in electron microscopy undetected any lattice anomalies in the vicinity of the transition temperature. It is most likely that the antiferromagnetic correlation plays an essential role of the gap opening.
The semiconductor Sr2FeOsO6, depending on temperature, adopts two types of spin structures that differ in the spin sequence of ferrimagnetic iron - osmium layers along the tetragonal c-axis. Neutron powder diffraction experiments, 57Fe Mössbauer spectra, and density-functional theory calculations suggest that this behavior arises because a lattice instability resulting in alternating iron-osmium distances fine-tunes the balance of competing exchange interactions. Thus, Sr2FeOsO6 is an example for a double perovskite, in which the electronic phases are controlled by the interplay of spin, orbit…
Cobalt oxides have long been understood to display intriguing phenomena known as spin-state crossovers, where the cobalt ion spin changes vs. temperature, pressure, etc. A very different situation was recently uncovered in praseodymium-containing cobalt oxides, where a first-order coupled spin-state/structural/metal-insulator transition occurs, driven by a remarkable praseodymium valence transition. Such valence transitions, particularly when triggering spin-state and metal-insulator transitions, offer highly appealing functionality, but have thus far been confined to cryogenic temperatures in…
We report the first single crystal growth of the correlated metal LaNiO3 using a high-pressure optical-image floating zone furnace. The crystals were studied using single crystal/powder x-ray diffraction, resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility. The availability of bulk LaNiO3 crystals will (i) promote deep understanding in this correlated material, including the mechanism of enhanced paramagnetic susceptibility, and (ii) provide rich opportunities as a substrate for thin film growth such as important ferroelectric and/or multiferroic materials. This study demonstrates the powe…
In insulators, the method of Marzari and Vanderbilt [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 56}, 12847 (1997)] can be used to generate maximally localized Wannier functions whose centers are related to the electronic polarization. In the case of layered insulators, this approach can be adapted to provide a natural definition of the local polarization associated with each layer, based on the locations of the nuclear charges and one-dimensional Wannier centers comprising each layer. Here, we use this approach to compute and analyze layer polarizations of ferroelectric perovskite superlattices, including changes in l…
We do a search for topological insulators which are associated with ferromagnetic ordering and show anomalous quantum Hall effect, among transition metal oxide superlattices taking the parent compounds as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Among the various superlattices which are studied here, (LaAlO3)10/(LaOsO3)2 exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state with a topologically non-trivial energy gap when a spin-orbit interaction is turned on. The study of transverse conductivity shows that the system has quantized Hall conductivity inside the topological energy gap without applying any external magnetic field. Th…
ThTaN$_3$, a rare cubic perovskite nitride semiconductor, has been studied using {\it ab initio} methods. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) results in band inversion and a band gap of 150 meV at the zone center. In spite of the trivial $Z_2$ indices, two pairs of spin-polarized surface bands cross the gap near the zone center, indicating that this system is a topological crystalline insulator with the mirror Chern number of $|{\cal C}_m|=2$ protected by the mirror and $C_4$ rotational symmetries. Additionally, SOC doubles the Seebeck coefficient, leading to a maximum of $\sim$400 $μ$V/K at 150 K for c…
The junction magnetoresistivity and domain phase transition were studied between ZnO and La0.4Gd0.1Sr0.5CoO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 (100) substrates epitaxially by pulse laser deposit. The ferromagnetic transformation into phase-separated (two phase) state was displayed below Tc~127 and has observed that the lattice change discontinuously in the doped cobalt perovskites La0.4Gd0.1Sr0.5CoO3. The Ginzburg-Landau phase field is introduced to deduce antiferroelectric domain structure in LGSCO thin film. On the basis of the domain structures, the phase boundary of thin film is strongly dependen…
Interaction-driven metal-insulator transitions or Mott transitions are widely observed in condensed-matter systems. In multi-orbital systems, many-body physics is richer in which an orbital-selective metal-insulator transition is an intriguing and unique phenomenon. Here we use first-principles calculations to show that a magnetic transition (from paramagnetic to long-range magnetically ordered) can simultaneously induce an orbital-selective insulator-metal transition in rock-salt ordered double perovskite oxides $A_2BB'$O$_6$ where $B$ is a non-magnetic ion (Y$^{3+}$ and Sc$^{3+}$) and $B'$ a…
Perovskite oxides exhibit a plethora of exceptional electronic properties, providing the basis for novel concepts of oxide-electronic devices. The interest in these materials is even extended by the remarkable characteristics of their interfaces. Studies on single epitaxial connections between the two wide-bandgap insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 have revealed them to be either high-mobility electron conductors or insulating, depending on the atomic stacking sequences. In the latter case they are conceivably positively charged. For device applications, as well as for basic understanding of the int…
In this work, we use the thermodynamically consistent and conserving self-energy embedding theory (SEET) to study the spectra of the prototypical undistorted cubic perovskites SrVO$_3$ and SrMnO$_3$. In the strongly correlated metallic SrVO$_3$ we find that the usual attribution of the satellite peaks at -1.8eV to Hund or Hubbard physics in the $t_{2g}$ orbitals is inconsistent with our calculations. In the strongly correlated insulator SrMnO$_3$ we recover insulating behavior due to a feedback effect between the strongly correlated orbitals and the weakly correlated environment. Our calculati…
Symbolic regression identifies key physical parameters describing materials properties by uncovering correlations as nonlinear analytical expressions. However, the pool of expressions grows rapidly with complexity, compromising its efficiency. We tackle this challenge by a hierarchical approach: identified expressions are used as input parameters for obtaining more complex expressions. Crucially, this framework can transfer knowledge among properties, highlighting physical relationships. We demonstrate this strategy by using the Sure-Independence-Screening-and-Sparsifying-Operator (SISSO) appr…
We demonstrate memory devices based on proton doping and re-distribution in perovskite nickelates (RNiO3, {R=Sm,Nd}) that undergo filling-controlled Mott transition. Switching speeds as high as 30 ns in two-terminal devices patterned by electron-beam lithography is observed. The state switching speed reported here are 300X greater than what has been noted with proton-driven resistance switching to date. The ionic-electronic correlated oxide memory devices also exhibit multi-state non-volatile switching. The results are of relevance to use of quantum materials in emerging memory and neuromorphi…
Halide perovskites, with prototype cubic phase ABX3, undergo various phase transitions accompanied by rigid rotations of corner-sharing BX6 octahedra. Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we have performed a comprehensive investigation of all the possible octahedral tilting in eighteen halide perovskites ABX3 (A = Cs, Rb, K; B= Pb, Sn; X= I, Br, Cl) and found that the stabilization energies i.e. energy differences between cubic and the most stable tilted phases, are linearly correlated with tolerance factor t. Moreover, the tilt energies i.e. energy differences betwee…

Whilst electron correlations were previously recognized to trigger beyond conventional direct current (DC) electronic transportations (e.g. metal-to-insulator transitions, bad metal, thermistors), their respective influences to the alternation current (AC) transport are largely overlooked. Herein, we demonstrate active regulations in the electronic functionalities of d-band correlated rare-earth nickelate (ReNiO3) thin films, by simply utilizing their electronic responses to AC-frequencies (fAC). Assisted by temperature dependent near edge X-ray absorption fine structure analysis, we discovere…
Inorganic perovskite oxide ferroelectrics have recently generated substantial interest for photovoltaic applications; however, existing materials suffer from excessive electronic band gaps and insufficient electric polarization. The recent resurgence of hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics addresses the aforementioned deficiencies, but they are highly unstable against environmental effects and an inorganic resolution may still be optimal. Here we use first-principles calculations to design a low band gap, planar ferroelectric by leveraging the complexity of layered double perovskite oxides AA$^\pr…
We report a first-principles study of Bi-based 3$d$-5$d$ ordered double perovskite oxides (A$_2$BB$^\prime$O$_6$) with a 3$d$ atom (Fe) at the B-site and 5$d$ atoms (Re,Ir) at the B$^\prime$-site while keeping highly polarizable ions (Bi$^{3+}$) at the A-site. We find that, under coherent heteroepitaxy, Bi$_2$FeReO$_6$} exhibits a strain-driven anti-ferromagnetic insulator to ferrimagnetic semi-metal transition, while Bi$_2$FeIrO$_6$ shows correlation driven ferromagnetic insulator to ferrimagnetic half-metal transition with calculated magnetic moments of 5 $μ_B$/f.u. and 3 $μ_B$/f.u., respect…
Understanding the controlling principles of band gaps trends in d electron perovskites is needed both for gauging metal-insulator transitions, as well as their application in catalysis and doping. The magnitude of this band gap is rather different for different magnetic spin configurations. We find via electronic structure theory that the factors that connect gapping magnitudes to magnetism depend on the nature of the band edge orbital character (BEOC) and surprisingly scale with the number of antiferromagnetic contacts z$_i$ between neighboring transition metal ions. The dependence is weak wh…
We propose a method of controlling the metal-insulator transition of one perovskite material at its interface with a another ferroelectric material based on first principle calculations. The operating principle is that the rotation of oxygen octahedra tuned by the ferroelectric polarization can modulate the superexchange interaction in this perovskite. We designed a tri-color superlattice of (BiFeO$_3$)$_N$/LaNiO$_3$/LaTiO$_3$, in which the BiFeO$_3$ layers are ferroelectric, the LaNiO$_3$ layer is the layer of which the electronic structure is to be tuned, and LaTiO$_3$ layer is inserted to e…
We investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) in perovskite systems with d^1 and d^2 electron configuration of the transition metal (TM) cation. We first discuss the general trends expected from the changes in the crystal-field splitting and in the hopping parameters that are induced by epitaxial strain. We argue that the strain-induced crystal-field splitting generally favors the Mott-insulating state, whereas the strain-induced changes in the hopping parameters favor the metallic state under compressive strain and the insulating state under tensil…
Anisotropies in electronic transportations conventionally originate from the nature of low symmetries in crystal structures, and were not anticipated for perovskite oxides, the crystal asymmetricity of which is far below, e.g. van der Waals or topological crystal. Beyond conventional expectations, herein we demonstrate pronounced anisotropies in the inter-band coulomb repulsion dominated electronic transportation behaviors under low-dimensional confinement for the perovskite family of rare-earth nickelates (ReNiO3). From one aspect, imparting bi-axial interfacial strains upon various lattice p…
In recent years, A-site ordered half-doped double-perovskite manganites $\rm RBaMn_2O_6$ (R=rare earth) have attracted much attention due to their remarkable physical properties and a prospect of application as magnetoresistance, multiferroic, and oxygen storage materials. The nature of the ground state in ${\rm RBaMn_2O_6}$ as well as sequence of phase transitions taking place at cooling are not yet well understood due to complexity in both experimental and theoretical studies. Here we address the origin of the ground-state structure in PrBaMn$_2$O$_6$ as well as its electronic and magnetic p…
We have investigated the thermal Hall effect of magnons for various ferromagnetic insulators. For pyrochlore ferromagnetic insulators Lu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, Ho$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, and In$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$, finite thermal Hall conductivities have been observed below the Curie temperature $T_C$ . From the temperature and magnetic field dependences, it is concluded that magnons are responsible for the thermal Hall effect. The Hall effect of magnons can be well explained by the theory based on the Berry curvature in momentum space induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. The analysis has been ext…
We report x-ray diffraction, resistivity, thermopower, and magnetization of Sr3ErMn4-xGaxO10.5-d, in which A-site ordered tetragonal phase appears above x=1, and reveal that the system exhibits typical properties seen in the antiferromagnetic insulator with Mn3+. We succeed in preparing both A-site ordered and disordered phases for x=1 in different preparation conditions, and observe a significant decrease of the resistivity in the disordered phase. We discuss possible origins of the decrease focusing on the dimensionality and the disordered effect.
Complex quantum coupling phenomena of halide perovskites are examined through ab-initio calculations and exact diagonalization of model Hamiltonians to formulate a set of fundamental guiding rules to engineer the bandgap through strain. The bandgap tuning in halides is crucial for photovoltaic applications and for establishing non-trivial electronic states. Using CsSnI$_3$ as the prototype material, we show that in the cubic phase, the bandgap reduces irrespective of the nature of strain. However, for the tetragonal phase, it reduces with tensile strain and increases with compressive strain, w…
Abrupt fluorescence intermittency or blinking is long recognized to be characteristic of single nano-emitters. Extended quantum-confined nanostructures also undergo spatially heterogeneous blinking, however, there is no such precedence in dimensionally unconfined (bulk) materials. Here, we report multi-level blinking of entire individual organo-lead bromide perovskite micro-crystals (volume 0.1-3 micron-cuble) under ambient conditions. Extremely high spatiotemporal correlation (>0.9) in intra-crystal emission intensity fluctuations signifies effective communication amongst photogenerated carri…
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have emerged to the forefront of optoelectronic materials advancement in the past few years. Due to the nature of organic compounds within the perovskite structure, its optoelectronic properties are affected by complex interaction and correlation effects between the organic and inorganic ions. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, we observe two broad plasmonic excitation from the calculated loss function (LF) -Im[\varepislon^{-1} (ω)], peak A' and B' at 3.28 eV and 4.26 eV, respectively. The presence of these two asymmetric peaks in the spectroscopic el…
We investigated the electronic properties of epitaxially stabilized perovskite SrIrO3 and demonstrated the effective strain-control on its electronic structure. Comprehensive transport measurements showed that the strong spin-orbit coupling renders a novel semimetallic phase for the J_eff=1/2 electrons rather than an ordinary correlated metal, elucidating the nontrivial mechanism underlying the dimensionality-controlled metal-insulator transition in iridates. The electron-hole symmetry of this correlated semimetal was found to exhibit drastic variation when subject to bi-axial strain. Under co…
In recent experiments the irradiation of insulators of perovskite type with swift heavy ions under glancing incidence has been shown to provide a unique means to generate periodically arranged nanodots at the surface. The physical origin of these patterns has been suggested to stem from a highly anisotropic electron density distribution within the bulk. In order to show the relevance of the electron density distribution of the target we present a model calculation for the system Xe$^{+23}$ $\to$ SrTiO$_{3}$ that is known to produce the aforementioned surface modifications. On the basis of the …
Rare earth perovskite cobaltites are increasingly recognized as materials of importance due to rich physics and chemistry in their ordered-disordered structure for the same composition. Apart from colossal magnetoresistance effect, like manganites, the different forms of cobaltites exhibit interesting phenomena including spin, charge and orbital ordering, electronic phase separation, insulator-metal transition, large thermoelectric power at low temperature. Moreover, the cobaltites which display colossal magnetoresistance effect could be used as read heads in magnetic data storage and also in …
We report on a study of charge transport in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ single crystals with carrier density tuned across several orders of magnitude. Comparing this system with other quasi-cubic perovskites, in particular strontium titanate, we draw a comprehensive picture of metal-insulator transition and dilute metallicity in this $AB$O$_3$ family. Because of a lower electric permittivity, the metal-insulator transition in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ occurs at higher carrier densities compared to SrTiO$_3$. At low temperature, a distinct $T^2$ resistivity is visible. Its prefactor $A$ smoothly decreases with increasin…
The phenomenological theory for the polar instability giving rise to a two-dimensional electron gas at perovskite interfaces is hereby extended to include the coupling to perovskite tilts. A Landau theory for homogeneous tilts is first explored, setting the scene for the further, more realistic Landau-Ginzburg theory describing varying tilt amplitudes across a thin film. The theory is also generalized to account for the response to an applied electric field normal to the interface, which allows a finer control on phase transitions. The conventionally described physics of a single metal-insulat…
We report charge-transfer up to a single electron per interfacial unit cell across non-polar heterointerfaces from the Mott insulator LaTiO3 to the charge transfer insulator LaCoO3. In high-quality bi- and tri-layer systems grown using pulsed laser deposition, soft X-ray absorption, dichroism and STEM-EELS are used to probe the cobalt 3d-electron count and provide an element-specific investigation of the magnetic properties. The experiments prove a deterministically-tunable charge transfer process acting in the LaCoO3 within three unit cells of the heterointerface, able to generate full conver…
We predict a new class of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) in which the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can more effectively generate a large band gap at $Γ$ point. The band gap of conventional TI such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is mainly limited by two factors, the strength of SOC and, from electronic structure perspective, the band gap when SOC is absent. While the former is an atomic property, we find that the latter can be minimized in a generic rock-salt lattice model in which a stable crossing of bands {\it at} the Fermi level along with band character inversion occurs for a range of parame…
We consider magnetic ordering in materials with negative charge transfer energy, such as iron perovskite oxides. We show that for a large weight of oxygen holes in conduction bands, the double exchange mechanism favors a helicoidal rather than ferromagnetic spin ordering both in metals, e.g. SrFeO_3 and insulators with a small gap, e.g. CaFeO_3. We discuss the magnetic excitation spectrum and effects of pressure on magnetic ordering in these materials.
