A new numerical scheme for solving incompressible Bingham flows with variable density, plastic viscosity and yield stress is proposed. The mathematical and computational difficulties due to the non-differentiable definition of the stress tensor in the plug regions, i.e. where the strain-rate tensor vanishes, is overcome by using a projection formulation as in the Uzawa-like method for viscoplastic flows. This projection definition of the plastic tensor is coupled with a fractional time-stepping scheme designed for Newtonian incompressible flows with variable density. The plastic tensor is treated implicitly in the first sub-step of the fractional time-stepping scheme and a fixed-point iterative procedure is used for its computation. A pseudo-time relaxation term is added into the Bingham projection whose effect is to ensure a geometric convergence of the fixed-point algorithm. This is a key feature of the bi-projection scheme which provides a fast and accurate computation of the plastic tensor. Stability and error analyses of the bi-projection scheme are provided. The use of the discrete divergence-free velocity to convect the density in the mass conservation equation allows us to derive lower and upper bounds for the discrete density. The error induced by the pseudo-time relaxation term is controlled by a prescribed numerical parameter so that a first-order estimate of the time error is derived for the velocity field and the density, as well as the dependent parameters that are the plastic viscosity and the yield stress.
We are concerned with a system of partial differential equations describing internal flows of homogeneous incompressible fluids of Bingham type in which the value of activation (the so-called yield) stress depends on the internal pore pressure governed by an advection-diffusion equation. After providing the physical background of the considered model, paying attention to the assumptions involved in its derivation, we focus on the PDE analysis of the initial and boundary value problems. We give several equivalent descriptions for the considered class of fluids of Bingham type. In particular, we…
We propose a semismooth Newton method for non-Newtonian models of incompressible flow where the constitutive relation between the shear stress and the symmetric velocity gradient is given implicitly; this class of constitutive relations captures for instance the models of Bingham and Herschel-Bulkley. The proposed method avoids the use of variational inequalities and is based on a particularly simple regularisation for which the (weak) convergence of the approximate stresses is known to hold. The system is analysed at the function space level and results in mesh-independent behaviour of the no…
We investigate the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with Navier boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. We obtain the uniform regularity of solutions with respect to the kinematic viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusivity coefficient. These solutions are uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and $W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ which allow us to take the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit. Moreover, we also get the rates of convergence.
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with vanishing viscosity coefficients and general initial data in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ $ (d=2$ or 3). It is rigorously showed that, as the Mach number, the shear viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusion coefficient simultaneously go to zero, the weak solution of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converges to the strong solution of the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as long as the latter exists.
We look at a homogeneous incompressible fluid with a time and space variable rheology of Bingham type, which is governed by a coupling equation. Such a system is a simplified model for a gas-particle mixture that flows under the influence of gravity. The main application of this kind of model is pyroclastic flows in the context of volcanology. In order to prove long time existence of weak solutions, classical Galerkin approximation method coupled with a priori estimates allows us to partially solve the problem. A difficulty remains with the stress tensor, which must satisfy an implicit constit…
We show the existence and the regularity properties of the weak solutions to the two-dimensional stationary incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity coefficient, by analyzing a fourth-order nonlinear elliptic equation for the stream function. The density function and the viscosity coefficient may have large variations. In addition, we formulate the solutions for the parallel, concentric and radial flows respectively, and as examples we calculate the solutions with piecewise-constant viscosity coefficients explicitly.
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for the 3D nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition. We establish the local well-posedness of the strong solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing viscosity limit process is established and a strong rate of convergence is obtained as the boundary of the domain is flat. In addition, it is needed to add some additional condition for density to match well the boundary condition.
This manuscript is a survey on results related to boundary layers and the vanishing viscosity limit for incompressible flow. It is the lecture notes for a 10 hour minicourse given at the Morningside Center, Academia Sinica, Beijing, PRC from 11/28 to 12/07, 2007. The main topics covered are: a derivation of Prandtl's boundary layer equation; an outline of the rigorous theory of Prandtl's equation, without proofs; Kato's criterion for the vanishing viscosity limit; the vanishing viscosity limit with Navier friction condition; rigorous boundary layer theory for the Navier friction condition and …
We show strong convergence of the vorticities in the vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the two-dimensional torus, assuming only that the initial vorticity of the limiting Euler equations is in $L^p$ for some $p>1$. This substantially extends a recent result of Constantin, Drivas and Elgindi, who proved strong convergence in the case $p=\infty$. Our proof, which relies on the classical renormalization theory of DiPerna-Lions, is surprisingly simple.
We study the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a general capillary term. Thanks to recent methods based on Lagrangian change of variables, we obtain local well-posedness in critical Besov spaces (even if the integration index p is different from 2) and for variable viscosity and capillary terms. In the case of constant coefficients and for initial data that are perturbations of a constant state, we are able to prove that the lifespan goes to infinity as the capillary coefficient goes to zero, connecting our result to the global existence result obtained by Danchin …
We study statistical solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation and their vanishing viscosity limit. We show that a formulation using correlation measures, which are probability measures accounting for spatial correlations, and moment equations is equivalent to statistical solutions in the Foias-Prodi sense. Under the assumption of weak scaling, a weaker version of Kolmogorov's self-similarity at small scales hypothesis that allows for intermittency corrections, we show that the limit is a statistical solution of the incompressible Euler equations. To pass to the limit, we derive a…
There are a few examples of solutions to the incompressible Euler equations which are piecewise smooth with a discontinuity of the tangential velocity across a hypersurface evolving in time: the so-called vortex sheets. An important open problem is to determine whether or not these solutions can be obtained as zero viscosity limits of the incompressible Navier-Stokes solutions in the energy space. In this paper we establish a couple of sufficient conditions similar to the one obtained by Kato in [T.~Kato. Remarks on zero viscosity limit for nonstationary Navier-Stokes flows with boundary. Semi…
Global Existence and Incompressible Limit for the Three-Dimensional Axisymmetric Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Bulk Viscosity and Large Initial Data
In this paper, we are concerned with the vanishing viscosity problem for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with helical symmetry, in the whole space. We choose viscosity-dependent initial $\bu_0^ν$ with helical swirl, an analogue of the swirl component of axisymmetric flow, of magnitude $\mathcal{O}(ν)$ in the $L^2$ norm; we assume $\bu_0^ν\to \bu_0$ in $H^1$. The new ingredient in our analysis is a decomposition of helical vector fields, through which we obtain the required estimates.
In this note we analyze a model for a unidirectional unsteady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid with time dependent viscosity. A possible way to take into account such behaviour is to introduce a memory formalism, including thus the time dependent viscosity by using an integro-differential term and therefore generalizing the classical equation of a Newtonian viscous fluid. A possible useful choice, in this framework, is to use a rheology based on stress/strain relation generalized by fractional calculus modelling. This is a model that can be used in applied problems, taking into account a…

Several fluid systems are characterised by time reversal and parity breaking. Examples of such phenomena arise both in quantum and classical hydrodynamics. In these situations, the viscosity tensor, often dubbed ``odd viscosity'', becomes non-dissipative. At the mathematical level, this fact translates into a loss of derivatives at the level of \textsl{a priori} estimates: while the odd viscosity term depends on derivatives of the velocity field, no parabolic smoothing effect can be expected. In the present paper, we establish a well-posedness theory in Sobolev spaces for a system of incompres…
In this paper we obtain new well-possedness results concerning a linear inhomogenous Stokes-like system. These results are used to establish local well-posedness in the critical spaces for initial density $ρ_{0}$ and velocity $u_{0}$ such that $ρ_{0}-ρ\in\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac{3}{p}}(\mathbb{R}^{3})$, $u_{0}\in\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac{3}{p}-1}(\mathbb{R}^{3})$, $p\in\left( \frac{6}{5},4\right) $, for the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with variable viscosity. To the best of our knowledge, regarding the $3D$ case, this is the first result in a truly critical framework for which one…
In this short note, we study the local well-posedness of a 3D model for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with partial viscosity. This model was originally proposed by Hou-Lei in \cite{HouLei09a}. In a recent paper, we prove that this 3D model with partial viscosity will develop a finite time singularity for a class of initial condition using a mixed Dirichlet Robin boundary condition. The local well-posedness analysis of this initial boundary value problem is more subtle than the corresponding well-posedness analysis using a standard boundary condition because the Robin boundary conditio…
We investigate the uniform regularity and vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. It is shown that there exists a unique strong solution of the incompressible chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system in a finite time interval which is independent of the viscosity coefficient. Moreover, the solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space, which allows us to take the vanishing viscosity limit to obtain the incompressible inviscid chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system.
We show that in bounded domains with no-slip boundary conditions, the Navier-Stokes pressure can be determined in a such way that it is strictly dominated by viscosity. As a consequence, in a general domain we can treat the Navier-Stokes equations as a perturbed vector diffusion equation, instead of as a perturbed Stokes system. We illustrate the advantages of this view in a number of ways. In particular, we provide simple proofs of (i) local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for an unconstrained formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, and (ii) the unconditional stabilit…

Global existence and uniqueness of the density-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system with variable capillarity and viscosity coefficients
In this paper, we first prove the local well-posedness of the 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity in critical Besov spaces with negative regularity indices, without smallness assumption on the variation of the density. The key is to prove for $p\in(1,4)$ and $a\in\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac2p}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ that the solution mapping $\mathcal{H}_a:F\mapsto\nablaΠ$ to the 2-D elliptic equation $\mathrm{div}\big((1+a)\nablaΠ\big)=\mathrm{div} F$ is bounded on $\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac2p-1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. More precisely, we prove that $$\|\nablaΠ\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac2p-1}…
In this paper, we we study boundary layer problems for the incompressible MHD systems in the presence of physical boundaries with the standard Dirichlet oundary conditions with small generic viscosity and diffusion coefficients. We identify a non-trivial class of initial data for which we can establish the uniform stability of the Prandtl's type boundary layers and prove rigorously that the solutions to the viscous and diffusive incompressible MHD systems converges strongly to the superposition of the solution to the ideal MHD systems with a Prandtl's type boundary layer corrector. One of the …
In this work we extend the results in [6,32] on the 2D IPM system with constant viscosity (Atwood number $A_μ=0$) to the case of viscosity jump ($|A_μ|<1$). We prove a h-principle whereby (infinitely many) weak solutions in $C_tL_{w^*}^{\infty}$ are recovered via convex integration whenever a subsolution is provided. As a first example, non-trivial weak solutions with compact support in time are obtained. Secondly, we construct mixing solutions to the unstable Muskat problem with initial flat interface. As a byproduct, we check that the connection, established by Székelyhidi for $A_μ=0$, betwe…
This paper studies the inviscid limit of the two-dimensional incompressible viscoelasticity, which is a system coupling a Navier-Stokes equation with a transport equation for the deformation tensor. The existence of global smooth solutions near the equilibrium with a fixed positive viscosity was known since the work of F. H. Lin, C. Liu, and P. Zhang in "On hydrodynamics of viscoelastic fluids". The inviscid case was solved recently by the second author Z. Lei. in "Global well-posedness of incompressible elastodynamics in two dimensions". While the latter was solely based on the techniques fro…
Consider the dynamics of a layer of viscous incompressible fluid under the influence of gravity. The upper boundary is a free boundary with the effect of surface tension taken into account, and the lower boundary is a fixed boundary on which the Navier-slip condition is imposed. It is proved that there is a uniform time interval on which the estimates independent of both viscosity and surface tension coefficients of the solution can be established. This then allows one to justify the vanishing viscosity and surface tension limits by the strong compactness argument. In the presence of surface t…

In this article we consider viscous flow in the exterior of an obstacle satisfying the standard no-slip boundary condition at the surface of the obstacle. We seek conditions under which solutions of the Navier-Stokes system in the exterior domain converge to solutions of the Euler system in the full space when both viscosity and the size of the obstacle vanish. We prove that this convergence is true assuming two hypothesis: first, that the initial exterior domain velocity converges strongly in $L^2$ to the full-space initial velocity and second, that the diameter of the obstacle is smaller tha…
In this paper, we investigate the time decay behavior to Lions weak solution of 2D incompressible density-dependent Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity.
In this paper, we investigate the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to 2D incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with viscous coefficient depending on the density and with initial density being discontinuous across some smooth interface. Compared with the previous results for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity, the main difficulty here lies in the fact that the $L^1$ in time Lipschitz estimate of the velocity field can not be obtained by energy method (see \cite{DM17,LZ1, LZ2} for instance). Motivated by the key idea of Chemin to s…
Various models of tumor growth are available in the litterature. A first class describes the evolution of the cell number density when considered as a continuous visco-elastic material with growth. A second class, describes the tumor as a set and rules for the free boundary are given related to the classical Hele-Shaw model of fluid dynamics. Following the lines of previous papers where the material is described by a purely elastic material, or when active cell motion is included, we make the link between the two levels of description considering the 'stiff pressure law' limit. Even though vis…
In this paper we derive a criterion for the breakdown of classical solutions to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero viscosity and positive resistivity in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This result is analogous to the celebrated Beale-Kato-Majda's breakdown criterion for the inviscid Eluer equations of incompressible fluids. In $\mathbb{R}^2$ we establish global weak solutions to the magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero viscosity and positive resistivity for initial data in Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)$.
Global weak solutions and incompressible limit of two-dimensional isentropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with ripped density and large initial data
This paper is concerned with the mathematical derivation of the inhomoge-neous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (INS) from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (CNS) in the large volume viscosity limit. We first prove a result of large time existence of regular solutions for (CNS). Next, as a consequence, we establish that the solutions of (CNS) converge to those of (INS) when the volume viscosity tends to infinity. Analysis is performed in the two dimensional torus, for general initial data. In particular, we are able to handle large variations of density.
This paper studies the Cauchy problem of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic systems with or without viscosity $ν$. Under the assumption that the initial velocity field and the displacement of the initial magnetic field from a non-zero constant are sufficiently small in certain weighted Sobolev spaces, the Cauchy problem is shown to be globally well-posed for all $ν\geq 0$ and all space dimension $n \geq 2$. Such a result holds true uniformly in nonnegative viscosity parameter. The proof is based on the inherent strong null structure of the systems which was first introduced for incompressi…

This paper concerns the instability and stability of the trivial steady states of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary conditions in a slab domain in dimension two. The main results show that the stability (or instability) of this constant equilibrium depends crucially on whether the boundaries dissipate energy and the strengthen of the viscosity and slip length. It is shown that in the case that when all the boundaries are dissipative, then nonlinear asymptotic stability holds true, otherwise, there is a sharp critical viscosity, which distinguishes the nonline…
