Recently, Tu, Zeng, Li, and Helleseth considered trinomials of the form $f(X)=X+aX^{q(q-1)+1}+bX^{2(q-1)+1}\in\Bbb F_{q^2}[X]$, where $q$ is even and $a,b\in\Bbb F_{q^2}^*$. They found sufficient conditions on $a,b$ for $f$ to be a permutation polynomial (PP) of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ and they conjectured that the sufficient conditions are also necessary. The conjecture has been confirmed by Bartoli using the Hasse-Weil bound. In this paper, we give an alternative solution to the question. We also use the Hasse-Weil bound, but in a different way. Moreover, the necessity and sufficiency of the conditions are proved by the same approach.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $e$ be a positive integer. We completely explain the permutation binomials and trinomials arising from the reversed Dickson polynomials of the $(k+1)$-th kind $D_{n,k}(1,x)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p^e}$ when $n=p^l+2$, where $l\in \mathbb{N}$.
Let $q$ be a power of $2$. Recently, Tu and Zeng considered trinomials of the form $f(X)=X+aX^{(1/4)q^2(q-1)}+bX^{(3/4)q^2(q-1)}$, where $a,b\in\Bbb F_{q^2}^*$. They proved that $f$ is a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ if $b=a^{2-q}$ and $X^3+X+a^{-1-q}$ has no root in $\Bbb F_q$. In this paper, we show that the above sufficient condition is also necessary.
Let $q>2$ be a prime power and $f=-{\tt x}+t{\tt x}^q+{\tt x}^{2q-1}$, where $t\in\Bbb F_q^*$. We prove that $f$ is a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ if and only if one of the following occurs: (i) $q$ is even and $\text{Tr}_{q/2}(\frac 1t)=0$; (ii) $q\equiv 1\pmod 8$ and $t^2=-2$.
Permutation polynomials are an interesting subject of mathematics and have applications in other areas of mathematics and engineering. In this paper, we determine all permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{2^m}$ in Zieve's paper. We prove a conjecture proposed by Gupta and Sharma and obtain some new permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{2^m}$. Finally, we show that some classes of permutation trinomials with parameters are QM equivalent to some known permutation trinomials.
Let $q$ be a prime power. We determine all permutation trinomials of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ of the form $ax+bx^q+x^{2q-1}\in\Bbb F_{q^2}[x]$. The subclass of such permutation trinomials of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ with $a,b\in\Bbb F_q$ was determined in a recent paper by the author.
We determine all permutation trinomials of type $x^{2p^s+r}+x^{p^s+r}+λx^r$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^t}$ when $(2p^s+r)^4<p^t$. This partially extends a previous result by Bhattacharya and Sarkar in the case $p=2$, $r=1$.
Permutation polynomials over finite fields play important roles in finite fields theory. They also have wide applications in many areas of science and engineering such as coding theory, cryptography, combinatorial design, communication theory and so on. Permutation binomials and trinomials attract people's interest due to their simple algebraic form and additional extraordinary properties. In this paper, several new classes of permutation binomials and permutation trinomials are constructed. Some of these permutation polynomials are generalizations of known ones.
Let $f(X)=X(1+aX^{q(q-1)}+bX^{2(q-1)})\in\Bbb F_{q^2}[X]$, where $a,b\in\Bbb F_{q^2}^*$. In a series of recent papers by several authors, sufficient conditions on $a$ and $b$ were found for $f$ to be a permutation polynomial (PP) of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ and, in characteristic $2$, the sufficient conditions were shown to be necessary. In the present paper, we confirm that in characteristic 3, the sufficient conditions are also necessary. More precisely, we show that when $\text{char}\,\Bbb F_q=3$, $f$ is a PP of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ if and only if $(ab)^q=a(b^{q+1}-a^{q+1})$ and $1-(b/a)^{q+1}$ is a square…
Permutation polynomials over finite fields have wide applications in many areas of science and engineering. In this paper, we present six new classes of permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ which have explicit forms by determining the solutions of some equations.
Permutation polynomials over finite fields are an interesting and constantly active research subject of study for many years. They have important applications in areas of mathematics and engineering. In recent years, permutation binomials and permutation trinomials attract people's interests due to their simple algebraic forms. In this paper, by reversely using Tu's method for the characterization of permutation polynomials with exponents of Niho type, we propose a new method to construct permutation trinomials with coefficients 1. Moreover, we give the explicit compositional inverses of a cla…
In this work, we completely characterize (i) permutation binomials of the form $x^{{{2^n -1}\over {2^t-1}}+1}+ ax \in \mathbb{F}_{2^n}[x], n = 2^st, a \in \mathbb{F}_{2^{2t}}^{*}$, and (ii) permutation trinomials of the form $x^{2^s+1}+x^{2^{s-1}+1}+αx \in \mathbb{F}_{2^t}[x]$, \end{enumerate} where $s,t$ are positive integers. The first result, which was our primary motivation, is a consequence of the second result. The second result may be of independent interest.
Let $f=a{\tt x} +b{\tt x}^q+{\tt x}^{2q-1}\in\Bbb F_q[{\tt x}]$. We find explicit conditions on $a$ and $b$ that are necessary and sufficient for $f$ to be a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$. This result allows us to solve a related problem. Let $g_{n,q}\in\Bbb F_p[{\tt x}]$ ($n\ge 0$, $p=\text{char}\,\Bbb F_q$) be the polynomial defined by the functional equation $\sum_{c\in\Bbb F_q}({\tt x}+c)^n=g_{n,q}({\tt x}^q-{\tt x})$. We determine all $n$ of the form $n=q^α-q^β-1$, $α>β\ge 0$, for which $g_{n,q}$ is a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$.
A polynomial $f(x)$ over a field $K$ is called stable if all of its iterates are irreducible over $K$. In this paper we study the stability of trinomials over finite fields. Specially, we show that if $f(x)$ is a trinomial of even degree over the binary field $\mathbb{F}_2$, then $f(x)$ is not stable. We prove a similar result for some families of monic trinomials over finite fields of odd characteristic. These results are obtained towards the resolution of a conjecture on the instability of polynomials over finite fields whose degrees are divisible by the characteristic of the underlying fiel…
Permutation polynomials over finite fields constitute an active research area and have applications in many areas of science and engineering. In this paper, four classes of monomial complete permutation polynomials and one class of trinomial complete permutation polynomials are presented, one of which confirms a conjecture proposed by Wu et al. (Sci. China Math., to appear. Doi: 10.1007/s11425-014-4964-2). Furthermore, we give two classes of trinomial permutation polynomials, and make some progress on a conjecture about the differential uniformity of power permutation polynomials proposed by B…
Let $r$ be a positive integer, $h(X)\in\Bbb F_{q^2}[X]$, and $μ_{q+1}$ be the subgroup of order $q+1$ of $\Bbb F_{q^2}^*$. It is well known that $X^rh(X^{q-1})$ permutes $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ if and only if $\text{gcd}(r,q-1)=1$ and $X^rh(X)^{q-1}$ permutes $μ_{q+1}$. There are many ad hoc constructions of permutation polynomials of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ of this type such that $h(X)^{q-1}$ induces monomial functions on the cosets of a subgroup of $μ_{q+1}$. We give a general construction that can generate, through an algorithm, {\em all} permutation polynomials of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ with this property, includin…
In this note we prove a conjecture by Li, Qu, Li, and Fu on permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_3^{2k}$. In addition, new examples and generalizations of some families of permutation polynomials of $\mathbb{F}_{3^k}$ and $\mathbb{F}_{5^k}$ are given. We also study permutation quadrinomials of type $Ax^{q(q-1)+1} + Bx^{2(q-1)+1} + Cx^{q} + x$. Our method is based on the investigation of an algebraic curve associated with a {fractional polynomial} over a finite field.
We give historical remarks related to arXiv:2112.14547 ("A New Method of Construction of Permutation Trinomials with Coefficients 1", by Guo et al.). In particular, we show that the "new" permutation polynomials in that paper are actually well known. In addition we give a simpler derivation of these permutation polynomials than had been given previously, which demonstrates the general method of producing permutation polynomials that was introduced in arXiv:1310.0776.
In this paper, a construction of complete permutation polynomials over finite fields of even characteristic proposed by Tu et al. recently is generalized in a recursive manner. Besides, several classes of complete permutation polynomials are derived by computing compositional inverses of known ones.
By using the piecewise method, Lagrange interpolation formula and Lucas' theorem, we determine explicit expressions of the inverses of a class of reversed Dickson permutation polynomials and some classes of generalized cyclotomic mapping permutation polynomials over finite fields of characteristic three.
Permutation polynomials over finite fields have taken an important role in vast areas in mathematics as well as engineering. Recently, Tu et al. gave some classes of complete permutation polynomials over finite fields of even characteristic. In this paper, we give some properties based on a work of Akbary et al. With the help of the properties, we give extensions of Tu et el.'s results to arbitrary characteristic.

In \cite{D1}, Dickson listed all permutation polynomials up to degree 5 over an arbitrary finite field, and all permutation polynomials of degree 6 over finite fields of odd characteristic. The classification of degree 6 permutation polynomials over finite fields of characteristic 2 was left incomplete. In this paper we complete the classification of permutation polynomials of degree 6 over finite fields of characteristic 2. In addition, all permutation polynomials of degree 7 over finite fields of characteristic 2 are classified.
Up to linear transformations, we obtain a classification of permutation polynomials (PPs) of degree $8$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2^r}$ with $r>3$. By [J. Number Theory 176 (2017) 466-66], a polynomial $f$ of degree $8$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2^r}$ is exceptional if and only if $f-f(0)$ is a linearized PP. So it suffices to search for non-exceptional PPs of degree $8$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2^r}$, which exist only when $r\leqslant9$ by a previous result. This can be exhausted by the SageMath software running on a personal computer. To facilitate the computation, some requirements after linear transformations an…
In this paper, we present three classes of complete permutation monomials over finite fields of odd characteristic. Meanwhile, the compositional inverses of these complete permutation polynomials are also proposed.
This paper provides an algorithmic generalization of Dickson's method of classifying permutation polynomials (PPs) of a given degree $d$ over finite fields. Dickson's idea is to formulate from Hermite's criterion several polynomial equations satisfied by the coefficients of an arbitrary PP of degree $d$. Previous classifications of PPs of degree at most $6$ were essentially deduced from manual analysis of these polynomial equations. However, these polynomials, needed for that purpose when $d>6$, are too complicated to solve. Our idea is to make them more solvable by calculating some radicals o…
We discuss here characteristic $p$ $L$-series as well as the group $S_{(q)}$ which appears to act as symmetries of these functions. We explain various actions of $S_{(q)}$ that arise naturally in the theory as well as extensions of these actions. In general such extensions appear to be highly arbitrary but in the case where the zeroes are unramified, the extension is unique (and it is reasonable to expect it is unique only in this case). Having unramified zeroes is the best one could hope for in finite characteristic and appears to be an avatar of the Riemann hypothesis in this setting; see Se…
We consider the logarithm of the characteristic polynomial of random permutation matrices, evaluated on a finite set of different points. The permutations are chosen with respect to the Ewens distribution on the symmetric group. We show that the behavior at different points is independent in the limit and are asymptotically normal. Our methods enables us to study more general matrices, closely related to permutation matrices, and multiplicative class functions.
In this paper, we are interested in the moments of the characteristic polynomial $Z_n(x)$ of the $n\times n$ permutation matrices with respect to the uniform measure. We use a combinatorial argument to write down the generating function of $\E{\prod_{k=1}^p Z_n^{s_k}(x_k)}$ for $s_k\in\Nr$. We show with this generating function that $\lim_{n\rw\infty} \E{\prod_{k=1}^p Z_n^{s_k}(x_k)}$ exists for $\max_k|x_k|<1$ and calculate the growth rate for $p=2, |x_1|=|x_2|=1$, $x_1=\overline{x_2}$ and $n\rw\infty$. We also look at the case $s_k\in\C$. We use the Feller coupling to show that for each $|x|…
We determine all permutation polynomials over F_{q^2} of the form X^r A(X^{q-1}) where, for some Q which is a power of the characteristic of F_q, the integer r is congruent to Q+1 (mod q+1) and all terms of A(X) have degrees in {0, 1, Q, Q+1}. We then use this classification to resolve eight conjectures and open problems from the literature, and we show that the simplest special cases of our result imply 58 recent results from the literature. Our proof makes a novel use of geometric techniques in a situation where they previously did not seem applicable, namely to understand the arithmetic of …
