Grain boundaries (GBs) are central defects for describing polycrystalline materials, and playing major role in a wide-range of physical properties of polycrystals. Control over GB kinetics provides effective means to tailor polycrystal properties through material processing. While many approaches describe different GB kinetic phenomena, this review provides a unifying concept for a wide range of GB kinetic behavior. Our approach rests on a disconnection description of GB kinetics. Disconnections are topological line defects constrained to crystalline interfaces with both step and dislocation character. These characteristics can be completely specified by GB bicrystallography and the macroscopic degrees of freedom of GBs. GB thermal fluctuations, GB migration and the ability of GBs to absorb/emit other defects from/into the delimiting grains can be modeled via the nucleation, propagation and reaction of disconnections in the GB. We review the fundamentals of bicrystallography and its relationship to disconnections and ultimately to the kinetic behavior of GBs. We then relate disconnection dynamics and GB kinetics to microstructural evolution. While this review of the GB kinetics literature is not exhaustive, we review much of the foundational literature and draw comparisons from a wide swath of the extant experimental, simulation, and theoretical GB kinetics literature.
Grain growth in nanocrystalline Al was studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The novelty of this study results from the utilization of an algorithm to resolve per-grain kinetics and orientation change from molecular dynamics data sets. To this aim, a highly efficient algorithm for the identification and reconstruction of crystallites from molecular dynamics data sets of FCC materials was developed. This method is capable of calculating specific attributes of grains, namely, volume, center of mass, average orientation and orientation spread. In addition, it provides a mapping meth…
In the theoretical development of normal grain growth, the roles of "drift" (curvature effect) and "diffusion" (stochastic effect) have been an open question for many years. By coupling contributions of microstructure entropy and grain topological interactions with thermodynamic extremal principle (TEP), this letter extends the existing thermodynamic framework of grain growth. It not only explains the curvature and stochastic effects by thermodynamics but provides a new mean-field model for grain growth. Through thermodynamic modification, this new model can yield a high accuracy representatio…

Grain boundary self-diffusion of $^{57}$Co, $^{51}$Cr, $^{59}$Fe and $^{54}$Mn in a coarse-grained, single-phase fcc CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy is measured in a wide temperature range of 643 to 1273~K in both C- and B-type kinetic regimes after Harrison's classification. The results suggest that the product of the pertinent segregation factors, $s$, and the grain boundary width, $δ$, is about 0.5~nm for all elements at temperatures $T>800$~K. Whereas one short-circuit contribution is observed at higher temperatures above 800~K, the penetration profiles in the C-type kinetic regime (643 -- 7…
Grain boundary (GB) kinetics is important for many applications in 2d materials and metal thin films. To study how the substrate shape affects GB mobility and kinetics, we develop a kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulation method and an analytical model for GBs on the curved substrate by combining disconnection theory and by Foppl von Karman equations. Using sinusoidal MoS2 as an example, we can increase its GB mobility more than 50 times by changing substrate shape amplitudes and periods. We find that amplitude change GB mobility exponentially while wave vector change GB mobility linearly. The si…
Grain boundaries (GBs), an important constituent of polycrystalline materials, have a wide range of manifestion and significantly affect the properties of materials. Fully understanding the effects of GBs is stalemated due to lack of complete knowledge of their structures and energetics. Here, for the first time, by taking graphene as an example, we propose an analytical energy functional of GBs in angle space. We find that an arbitrary GB can be characterized by a geometric combination of symmetric GBs that follow the principle of uniform distribution of their dislocation cores in straight li…
The thermodynamic theory of dislocation/grain boundary interaction, including dislocation pile-up against, absorption by, and transfer through the grain boundary, is developed for nonuniform plastic deformations in polycrystals. The case study is carried out on the boundary conditions affecting work hardening of a bicrystal subjected to plane constrained shear for three types of grain boundaries: (i) impermeable hard grain boundary, (ii) grain boundary that allows dislocation transfer without absorption, (iii) grain boundary that absorbs dislocations and allows them to pass later.
Volume-fraction expressions are obtained for the systems of an infinite number of parallel planes arranged both regularly and randomly. As a special case of random arrangement, a non-Poissonian point process (the second-order Erlang process) of arrangement of planes is considered for the first time. The exact volume-fraction expression obtained for this case shows that it cannot be derived by the Cahn method, i. e. the extended-volume approach is applicable only to Poisson processes. The volume fraction equations for regular planes are used to study cubic grain structures, both regular and ran…
Grain boundary tracer diffusion of Ni, Fe and Cr was studied in a Ni-base 602CA coarse-grained alloy. A co-existence of several short-circuit contributions was distinguished at higher temperatures in Harrison's B-type regime (773-873 K), which were related to different families of high-angle grain boundaries with distinct coverages by precipitates and segregation levels as revealed by HAADF-STEM combined with EDX measurements. Annealing at 873 K for 18 hours resulted in Cr23C6-type carbides coexisting with an α-Cr-Mn-enriched phase in addition to sequential segregation layers of Al, Fe and Ni …
During grain growth in multiphase system, a convincing understanding on how the evolution kinetics of an individual phase-grains relates to the growth rate of entire microstructure is yet to be achieved. Therefore, in this work, comfortably comprehensible statistical tools are employed to realise the influence of the evolving phase-grains on the overall grain-growth kinetics of multiphase systems, both duplex and triplex, with varying phase-fractions. A dataset capable of rendering statistically significant, and accessible, information is built by modelling, and analysing, grain growth in twen…
The phase behavior of grain boundaries can have a strong influence on interfacial properties. Little is known about the emergence of grain boundary phases in elemental metal systems and how they transform. Here, we observe the nanoscale patterning of a grain boundary by two alternating grain boundary phases with distinct atomic structures in elemental copper by atomic resolution imaging. The same grain boundary phases are found by grain boundary structure search indicating a first-order transformation. Finite temperature atomistic simulations reveal a congruent, diffusionless transition betwee…
We examine the interaction between precipitates and grain boundaries, which undergo shear-coupled motion. The elastic problem, emerging from grain boundary perturbations and an elastic mismatch strain induced by the precipitates, is analysed. The resulting free elastic energy contains interaction terms, which are derived numerically via the integration of the elastic energy density. The interaction of the shear-coupled grain boundary and the coherent precipitates leads to potential elastic energy reductions. Such a decrease of the elastic energy has implications on the grain boundary shape and…
We introduce a method to visualize dislocations along grain boundaries at the atomic level. It uses an atomic-level Nye tensor, representing the dislocation density. To calculate the Nye tensor at grain boundaries, we extend the Hartley-Mishin strain gradient calculation to the displacement shift complete lattice. We show that the method is effective in visualizing disconnections and the dislocation content of grain boundary phase junctions in body-centered cubic tungsten, as well as face-centered cubic copper. In addition, we use the method to characterize the morphology of a two-dimensional …
We investigate the effect of solute drag on grain growth (GG) kinetics in olivine-rich rocks through full field and mean field modelling. Considering a drag force exerted by impurities on grain boundary migration allows reconciling laboratory and natural constraints on olivine GG kinetics. Solute drag is implemented in a full field level-set framework and on a mean field model, which explicitly accounts for a grain size distribution. After calibration of the mean field model on full field results, both models are able to both reproduce laboratory GG kinetics and to predict grain sizes consiste…
Grain boundaries dramatically affect the properties of polycrystalline materials because of differences in atomic configuration. To fully understand the relationship between grain boundaries and materials properties, systematic studies of the grain boundary atomic structure are crucial. However, such studies are limited by the extensive computation necessary to determine the structure of a single grain boundary. If the structure could be predicted with more efficient computation, the understanding of the grain boundary would be accelerated significantly. Here, we predict grain boundary structu…
Equations for the transformed volume fraction of a spherical particle with nucleation on its surface, both nonisothermal and isothermal, are derived in the framework of Kolmogorov method adapted for this problem. Characteristic parameters governing the transformation kinetics are determined; the latter is studied with particular emphasis on the Avrami exponent temporal behavior. It is shown that the surface-nucleated transformation qualitatively differs from the bulk-nucleated one at large values of the characteristic parameters due to the one-dimensional radial growth of the new phase occurri…

With the increasing availability of experimental and computational data concerning the properties and distribution of grain boundaries in polycrystalline materials, there is a corresponding need to efficiently and systematically express functions on the grain boundary space. A grain boundary can be described by the rotations applied to two grains on either side of a fixed boundary plane, suggesting that the grain boundary space is related to the space of rotations. This observation is used to construct an orthornormal function basis, allowing effectively arbitrary functions on the grain bounda…
We study the mechanisms of slip transfer at a grain boundary, in titanium, using Differential Aperture X-ray Laue Micro-diffraction (DAXM). This 3D characterization tool enables measurement of the full (9-component) Nye lattice curvature tensor and calculation of the density of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs). We observe dislocation pile-ups at a grain boundary, as the neighbor grain prohibits easy passage for dislocation transmission. This incompatibility results in local micro-plasticity within the slipping grain, near to where the slip planes intersect the grain boundary, and we…
We present a detailed numerical study on structure and local magnetic properties of $\langle 100 \rangle$ symmetric tilt grain boundaries in bcc-iron. Particular attention is paid to connection between type of grain boundary relaxation and local magnetic properties. Results from first principles calculation showed that grain boundary reconstruction leads to non-uniform distribution of local magnetic moments in grain boundary plane. This is in contrast with the result obtained in grain boundary plane, where simple relaxation is observed. Well optimized atomic configurations in the vicinity of t…
Investigating the grain boundary energies of pure fcc metals and their surface energies obtained from ab initio modeling, we introduce a robust method to estimate the grain boundary energies for complex multicomponent alloys. The input parameter is the surface energy of the alloy, which can easily be accessed by modern ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. The method is demonstrated in the case of paramagnetic Fe-Cr-Ni alloys for which reliable grain boundary data is available.
A discrete model and the regular solution approximation are applied to describe the effect of grain boundary motion on grain boundary phase transformations in a binary alloy. The model predicts all thermodynamic properties of the grain boundary and the solute drag force, and permits a broad exploration of the parameter space and different dynamic regimes. The grain boundary phases continue to exist in the moving grain boundary and show a dynamic hysteresis loop, a dynamic critical line, and other features that are similar to those for equilibrium phases. Grain boundary motion strongly affects …
We apply inline electron holography to investigate the electrostatic potential across an individual BaZr0.9Y0.1O3 grain boundary. With holography, we measure a grain boundary potential of -1.3 V. Electron energy loss spectroscopy analyses indicate that barium vacancies at the grain boundary are the main contributors to the potential well in this sample. Furthermore, geometric phase analysis and density functional theory calculations suggest that reduced atomic density at the grain boundary also contributes to the experimentally measured potential well.
Grain Boundaries govern many properties of polycrystalline materials, including the vast majority of engineering materials. Evolutionary algorithm can be applied to predict the grain boundary structures in different systems. However, the recognition and classification of thousands of predicted structures is a very challenging work for eye detection in terms of efficiency and accuracy. A data pipeline is developed to accelerate the classification and recognition of grain boundary structures predicted by Evolutionary Algorithm. The data pipeline has three main components including feature engine…
Mg grain boundary (GB) segregation and GB diffusion can impact the processing and properties of Al-Mg alloys. Yet, Mg GB diffusion in Al has not been measured experimentally or predicted by simulations. We apply atomistic computer simulations to predict the amount and the free energy of Mg GB segregation, and the impact of segregation on GB diffusion of both alloy components. At low temperatures, Mg atoms segregated to a tilt GB form clusters with highly anisotropic shapes. Mg diffuses in Al GBs slower than Al itself, and both components diffuse slowly in comparison with Al GB self-diffusion. …
In this work, we experimentally establish the isothermal nanofacet evolution at an asymmetric tilt grain boundary in the Cu-Ag system using a diffusion couple approach. We investigate the nanofacet formation along the grain boundary in dependence of the Ag solute excess concentration. The initial grain boundary dissociates into asymmetric Ag-lean segments and Ag-rich symmetric (210) segments. Increasing Ag excess leads to an increase in Ag-rich facet segment length, while the length of the asymmetric facets remains constant. From this, we construct a grain boundary nanofaceting diagram deduced…
Systematic microstructure design requires reliable thermodynamic descriptions of each and all microstructure elements. While such descriptions are well established for most bulk phases, thermodynamic assessment of crystal defects is challenged because of their individualistic nature. In this paper, a model is devised for assessing grain boundary thermodynamics based on available bulk thermodynamic data. We propose a continuous relative atomic density field and its spatial gradients to describe the grain boundary region with reference to the defect-free, homogeneous bulk and derive the grain bo…
Segregation-induced structural transitions in metallic grain boundaries are studied with hybrid atomistic Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations using Cu-Zr as a model system, with a specific emphasis on understanding the effect of grain boundary character. With increasing global composition, the six grain boundary types chosen for this study first form ordered complexions, with the local segregation pattern depending on the grain boundary core structure, then transform into disordered complexions when the grain boundary composition reaches a critical value that is temperature dependent. T…
Grain boundaries often exhibit ordered atomic structures. Increasing amounts of evidence have been provided by transmission electron microscopy and atomistic computer simulations that different stable and metastable grain boundary structures can occur. Meanwhile, theories to treat them thermodynamically as grain boundary phases have been developed. Whereas atomic structures were identified at particular grain boundaries for particular materials, it remains an open question if these structures and their thermodynamic excess properties are material specific or generalizable to, e.g., all fcc met…
High entropy alloys (HEAs) have emerged as a new class of multicomponent materials, which have potential for high temperature applications. Phase stability and creep deformation, two key selection criteria for high temperature materials, are predominantly influenced by the diffusion of constituent elements along the grain boundaries (GBs). For the first time, GB diffusion of Ni in chemically homogeneous CoCrFeNi and CoCrFeMnNi HEAs is measured by radiotracer analysis using the $^{63}$Ni isotope. Atom probe tomography confirmed the absence of elemental segregation at GBs that allowed reliable e…
An algorithm implemented in an open-source python library was developed for building periodic coincidence site lattice (CSL) grain boundary models in a universal fashion. The software framework aims to generate tilt and twist grain boundaries from cubic and tetragonal crystals for ab-initio and classical atomistic simulation. This framework has two useful features: i) it can calculate all the CSL matrices for generating CSL from a given Sigma (Σ) value and rotation axis, allowing the users to build the specific CSL and grain boundary models; ii) it provides a convenient command line tool to en…
Faceted grain boundaries, where grain boundary area is increased in the name of producing low-energy segments, can exhibit new and unexpected migration trends. For example, several faceted $Σ$3 boundaries have demonstrated anti-thermal and thermally damped mobility. $Σ$11 <110> tilt boundaries represent another promising but relatively unexplored set of interfaces, with a (113) low-energy plane that can lead to faceting. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations are used to study grain boundary migration of an asymmetric $Σ$11 <110> grain boundary in two face centered cubic metals. Mobilit…
Recent grain growth experiments have revealed that the same type of grain boundary can have very different mobilities depending on its local microstructure. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to quantify uncertainty in the reduced mobility of curved grain boundaries for different types of boundary conditions and over a range of initial velocity seeds. We consider cylindrical island grains in Ni with a [001] tilt axis as a model system. Unexpectedly, we find large variation in the reduced mobility of curved grain boundaries depending on both the imposed constraints and the init…
