Based on Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function method, we have investigated spin current production in a hybrid T-shaped device, consisting of a central quantum dot connected to the leads and a side dot which only couples to the central dot. The topology of this structure allows for quantum interference of the different paths that go across the device, yielding Fano resonances in the spin dependent transport properties. Correlation effects are taken into account at the central dot and handled within a mean field approximation. Its interplay with the Fano effect is analyzed in the strong coupling regime. Non-vanishing spin currents are only obtained when the leads are ferromagnetic, the current being strongly dependent on the relative orientation of the lead polarizations. We calculate the conductance (spin and charge) by numerically differentiating the current, and a rich structure is obtained as a manifestation of quantum coherence and correlation effects. Increase of the Coulomb interaction produces localization of states at the side dot, largely suppressing Fano resonances. The interaction is also responsible for the negative values of the spin conductance in some regions of the voltage near resonances, effect which is the spin analog of the Esaki tunnel diode. We also analyze control of the currents via gate voltages applied to the dots, possibility which is interesting for practical operations.
We report on a new type of Fano effect, named as Andreev-Fano effect, in a hybrid normal-metal / superconductor (N/S) interferometer embedded with a quantum dot. Compared with the conventional Fano effect, Andreev-Fano effect has some new features related to the characteristics of Andreev reflection. In the linear response regime, the line shape is the square of the conventional Fano shape; while in the nonlinear transport, a sharp resonant structure is superposed on an expanded interference pattern, qualitatively different from the conventional Fano effect. The phase dependence of the hybrid …
After briefly reviewing the Fano effect, we explain why it may be relevant to various types of Aharonov-Bohm interferometers. We discuss both closed (electron conserving) and open interferometers, in which one path contains either a simple quantum dot or a decorated quantum dot (with more than one internal state or a parallel path). The possible relevance to some hitherto unexplained experimental features is also discussed.
Coherent quantum tunneling effects on quantum interference are investigated in electron transport through a mesoscopic interferometer. An evanescent wave tunneling through a potential barrier in one arm can interfere with a propagating wave passing through the other arm of interferometer. It is shown that, even for the same arm lengths, such a quantum interference can induce a circulating current, where Fano antiresonances do not occur in electron transmission. It is found that there exists a critical value of asymmetric arm lengths that gives rise to a Fano antiresonance in electron transmiss…
The Fano effect, which arises from an interference between a localized state and the continuum, reveals a fundamental aspect of quantum mechanics. We have realized a tunable Fano system in a quantum dot (QD) in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer, which is the first convincing demonstration of this effect in mesoscopic systems. With the aid of the continuum, the localized state inside the QD acquires itinerancy over the system even in the Coulomb blockade. Through tuning of the parameters, which is an advantage of the present system, unique properties of the Fano effect on the phase and coherence …
In this paper, we investigate transient quantum transport in a nanoscale Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer consisting of a laterally coupled double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to the source and drain electrodes. The transient linear conductance is derived at finite temperature of the leads, and is divided into three terms contributed from different transport channels. By observing the transient linear conductance and time evolution of the elements of the reduced density matrix of the DQD system, we show the nature of how Fano resonance is built up in the time domain.
We use the Landauer-Büttiker formalism to study the mesoscopic Fano effect in Aharonov-Bohm rings with an embedded two-dimensional noninteracting dot. The magnetic field dependence of the dot levels leads to a global shift of the Fano lines which becomes important for small ring/dot area ratios. As the magnetic field is varied the Fano dips move periodically from one side of the peak to the other, as reported by Kobayashi {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 256806 (2002)]. We show that this effect appears due to a specific magnetic control of the difference between the phase of the single…
Although the conductance of a closed Aharonov-Bohm interferometer, with a quantum dot on one branch, obeys the Onsager symmetry under magnetic field reversal, it needs not be a periodic function of this field: the conductance maxima move with both the field and the gate voltage on the dot, in an apparent breakdown of `phase rigidity'. These experimental findings are explained theoretically as resulting from multiple electronic paths around the interferometer ring. Data containing several Coulomb blockade peaks, whose shapes change with the magnetic flux, are fitted to a simple model, in which …
We investigate transport properties through a crossbar-shaped structure formed by a quantum dot (QD) coupled to two normal leads and embedded between two one-dimensional topological superconductors (TSCs). Each TSC hosts Majorana bound states (MBSs) at its ends, which can interact between them with an effective coupling strength. We find a signature of bound states in continuum (BIC) in the MBSs spectral function. By allowing finite inter MBSs coupling, BICs splitting is observed and shows projection in transmission for asymmetric coupling case as cuasi-BICs. As a consequence, we also show tha…
We study the quasi-bound state and the transport properties in the T-shaped graphene nanoribbon consisting of a metallic armchair-edge ribbon connecting to a zigzag-edge sidearm. We systematically study the condition under which there are quasi-bound states in the system for a wide range of the system size. It is found that when the width of the sidearm is about half of the width of the armchair leads, there is a quasi-bound state trapped at the intersection of the T-shape structure. The quasi-bound states are truly localized in the sidearm but have small continuum components in the armchair l…
We study the Fano-Kondo effect in a closed Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer which contains a single-level quantum dot and predict a frequency doubling of the AB oscillations as a signature of Kondo-correlated states. Using Keldysh formalism, Friedel sum rule and Numerical Renormalization Group, we calculate the exact zero-temperature linear conductance $G$ as a function of AB phase $ϕ$ and level position $ε$. In the unitary limit, $G(ϕ)$ reaches its maximum $2e^2/h$ at $ϕ=π/2$. We find a Fano-suppressed Kondo plateau for $G(ε)$ similar to recent experiments.
We study the spin-resolved transport properties of T-shaped double quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic leads. Using the numerical renormalization group method, we calculate the linear conductance and the spin polarization of the current for various model parameters and at different temperatures. We show that an effective exchange field due to the presence of ferromagnets results in different conditions for Fano destructive interference in each spin channel. This spin dependence of the Fano effect leads to perfect spin polarization, the sign of which can be changed by tuning the dots' levels.…
We investigate the transport properties through a nanostructure composed of parallel double quantum dots coupled to two normal contacts. Additionally, each quantum dot is connected to a topological superconducting nanowire, hosting Majorana zero modes at its ends. A magnetic flux threading across the area enclosed by the interferometer is considered. First, we investigate the physical quantities of the system employing Green's function formalism. We find that the emergence of bound states appears in symmetric configurations of topological superconducting nanowires, i.e., depending on their len…
We investigate resonant tunneling through molecular states of coupled double quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. The conductance through the system consists of two resonances associated with the bonding and the antibonding quantum states. We predict that the two resonances are composed of a Breit-Wigner resonance and a Fano resonance, those widths and Fano factor depending on the AB phase very sensitively. Further, we point out that the bonding properties, such as the covalent and the ionic bonding, can be identified by the AB oscillations.
We report a transport experiment on the Fano effect in a quantum connecting wire (QW) with a side-coupled quantum dot (QD). The Fano resonance occurs between the QD and the "T-shaped" junction in the wire, and the transport detects anti-resonance or forward scattered part of the wavefunction. While in this geometry it is more difficult to tune the shape of the resonance than in the previously reported Aharonov-Bohm-ring type interferometer, the resonance purely consists of the coherent part of transport. By utilizing this advantage, we have qualitatively explained the temperature dependence of…
Single metallic nanorods acting as half-wave antennas in the optical range exhibit an asymmetric, multi-resonant scattering spectrum that strongly depends on both their length and dielectric properties. Here we show that such spectral features can be easily understood in terms of Fano-like interference between adjacent plasmon resonances. On the basis of analytical and numerical results for different geometries, we demonstrate that Fano resonances may appear for such single-particle nanoantennas provided that interacting resonances overlap in both spatial and frequency domains.
The Fano-Kondo effect in zero-bias conductance is studied based on a theoretical model for the T-shaped quantum dot by the finite temperature density matrix renormalization group method. The modification of the two Fano line shapes at much higher temperatures than the Kondo temperature is also investigated by the effective Fano parameter estimated as a fitting parameter.
We investigate a tunable Fano interferometer consisting of a quantum dot coupled via tunneling to a one-dimensional channel. In addition to Fano resonance, the channel shows strong Coulomb response to the dot, with a single electron modulating channel conductance by factors of up to 100. Where these effects coexist, lineshapes with up to four extrema are found. A model of Coulomb-modified Fano resonance is developed and gives excellent agreement with experiment.
Recently, the existence of local magnetic moment in a hydrogen adatom on graphene has been confirmed experimentally [González-Herrero et al., Science, 2016, 352, 437]. Inspired by this breakthrough, we theoretically investigate the top-site adatom on trilayer graphene (TLG) by solving the Anderson impurity model via self-consistent mean field method. The influence of the stacking order, the adsorption site and external electric field are carefully considered. We find that, due to its unique electronic structure, the situation of the TLG is drastically different from that of the monolayer graph…
In the present work we theoretically study thermoelectric transport and heat transfer in a junction including a $T$-shaped double quantum dot coupled to nonmagnetic electrodes and supplemented with a third dot in a parallel configuration. We focus on the combined effect of Coulomb interactions and quantum interference occurring in the $T$-shaped portion of the considered triple quantum dot on the thermoelectric electron transport. The transport through the system is studied within the Coulomb blockade regime in the limit of strong intra-dot interactions between electrons beyond the linear resp…
We show how shot noise in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the fractional quantum Hall regime probes the charge and statistics of quantum Hall quasiparticles. The dependence of the noise on the magnetic flux through the interferometer allows for a simple way to distinguish Abelian from non-Abelian quasiparticle statistics. In the Abelian case, the Fano factor (in units of the electron charge) is always lower than unity. In the non-Abelian case, the maximal Fano factor as a function of the magnetic flux exceeds one.
Detecting the transmission phase of a quantum dot via interferometry can reveal the symmetry of the orbitals and details of electron transport. Crucially, interferometry will enable the read-out of topological qubits based on one-dimensional nanowires. However, measuring the transmission phase of a quantum dot in a nanowire has not yet been established. Here, we exploit recent breakthroughs in the growth of one-dimensional networks and demonstrate interferometric read-out in a nanowire-based architecture. In our two-path interferometer, we define a quantum dot in one branch and use the other p…
The Fano-Kondo effect in zero-bias conductance is investigated based on a theoretical model for the T-shaped quantum dot. The conductance as a function of the gate voltage is generally characterized by a Fano asymmetric parameter q. With varying temperature the conductance shows a crossover between the high and low temperature regions compared with the Kondo temperature T_K: two Fano asymmetric peaks at high temperatures and the Fano-Kondo plateau inside a Fano peak at low temperatures. Temperature dependence of conductance is calculated numerically by the Finite temperature density matrix ren…
We study the Fano effect and the visibility of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations for a mesoscopic interferometer with an embedded quantum dot in the presence of a nearby second dot. When the electron-electron interaction between the two dots is considered the nearby dot acts as a charge detector. We compute the currents through the interferometer and detector within the Keldysh formalism and the self-energy of the non-equilibrium Green functions is found up to the second order in the interaction strength. The current formula contains a correction to the Landauer-B\"{uttiker} formula. Its contribu…
We propose a controllable way of tuning Fano resonances in open quantum dots in the absence of magnetic field. A quantum dot can be modified by changing the gate voltages that define the dot itself. An extra degree of freedom can be introduced by means of a controllable repulsive perturbation, such as the one induced by scanning a Atomic Force Microscope tip on a real sample. We numerically investigate the coupling between localized states in the dot and the continuum in the leads. The advantage of such position controllable perturbation is the selective manipulation of the quantum dot states.…
We investigate within a coarse-grained model the conditions leading to the appearance of Fano resonances or anti-resonances in the conductance spectrum of a generic molecular junction with a side group (T-junction). By introducing a simple graphical representation (parabolic diagram), we can easily visualize the relation between the different electronic parameters determining the regimes where Fano resonances or anti-resonances in the low-energy conductance spectrum can be expected. The results obtained within the coarse-grained model are validated using density-functional based quantum transp…
Electron transport through two parallel quantum dots is a kind of solid-state realization of double-path interference. We demonstrate that the inter-dot Coulomb correlation and quantum coherence would result in strong current fluctuations with a divergent Fano factor at zero frequency. We also provide physical interpretation for this surprising result, which displays its generic feature and allows us to recover this phenomenon in more complicated systems.
It has been shown recently that non-Abelian states and the spin-polarized and unpolarized versions of the Abelian 331 state may have identical signatures in Fabry-Pérot interferometry in the quantum Hall effect at filling factor 5/2. We calculate the Fano factor for the shot noise in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the 331 states and demonstrate that it differs from the Fano factor in the proposed non-Abelian states. The Fano factor depends periodically on the magnetic flux through the interferometer. Its maximal value is $2\times 1.4e$ for the 331 states with a symmetry between two flavors o…
We consider T--shaped, two--dimensional quantum waveguides containing attractive or repulsive impurities with a smooth, realistic shape, and study how the resonance behavior of the total conductance depends upon the strength of the defect potential and the geometry of the device. The resonance parameters are determined locating the relevant S-matrix poles in the Riemann energy surface. The total scattering operator is obtained from the S-matrices of the various constituent segments of the device through the *-product composition rule. This allows for a numerically stable evaluation of the scat…
A critical aspect of quantum mechanics is the nonlocal nature of the wavefunction, a characteristic that may yield unexpected coupling of nominally-isolated systems. The capacity to detect this coupling can be vital in many situations, especially those in which its strength is weak. In this work we address this problem in the context of mesoscopic physics, by implementing an electron-wave realization of a Fano interferometer using pairs of coupled quantum point contacts (QPCs). Within this scheme, the discrete level required for a Fano resonance is provided by pinching off one of the QPCs, the…
In this work, we investigate the conductance and current correlations properties of a quantum topological inteferometer consisting of a QD coupled to two Majorana Bound States (MBSs) confined at both ends of a 1D topological superconductor ring nanowire. We analyze the ring in its topological non trivial and trivial phases to show that the tunneling conductance, shot noise and fano factor present unique characteristics to distinguish the hallmark of MBSs. We reinforce our findings by taking advantage of the correspondence between the quantum topological interferometer and a dot effectively cou…
We report our studies of zero-frequency shot noise in tunneling through a parallel-coupled quantum dot interferometer by employing number-resolved quantum rate equations. We show that the combination of quantum interference effect between two pathways and strong Coulomb repulsion could result in a giant Fano factor, which is controllable by tuning the enclosed magnetic flux.
We compute the interference pattern of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer operating in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Our theoretical proposal is inspired by a remarkable experiment on edge states in the Integer Quantum Hall effect (IQHE). The Luttinger liquid model is solved via two independent methods: refermionization at nu=1/2 and the Bethe Ansatz solution available for Laughlin fractions. The current differs strongly from that of single electrons in the strong backscattering regime. The Fano factor is periodic in the flux, and it exhibits a sharp transition from sub-Poissonian (charge e/2…
We present the results of transport measurements in a hybrid system consisting of an arch-shaped quantum point contact (QPC) and a reflector; together, they form an electronic cavity in between them. On tuning the arch-QPC and the reflector, asymmetric resonance peak in resistance is observed at the one-dimension to two-dimension transition. Moreover, a dip in resistance near the pinch-off of the QPC is found to be strongly dependent on the reflector voltage. These two structures fit very well with the Fano line shape. The Fano resonance was found to get weakened on applying a transverse magne…

We theoretically investigate electron transport through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer containing laterally coupled double quantum dots. We introduce the indirect coupling parameter $α$, which characterizes the strength of the coupling via the reservoirs between two quantum dots. $|α|=1$ indicates the strongest coupling, where only a single mode contributes to the transport in the system. Two conduction modes exist in a system where $|α|\neq 1$. The interference effects such as the Fano resonance and the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation are suppressed as the absolute value of the parameter $α$ decre…
We theoretically examine the transport through an Aharonov-Bohm ring with an embedded quantum dot (QD), the so-called QD interferometer, to address two controversial issues regarding the shape of the Coulomb peaks and measurement of the transmission phase shift through a QD. We extend a previous model [B. R. Bulka and P. Stefanski, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5128 (2001); W. Hofstetter, J. Konig, and H. Schoeller, ibid. 87, 156803 (2001)] to consider multiple conduction channels in two external leads, L and R. We introduce a parameter p_α (|p_α| \le 1) to characterize a connection between the two arm…
We propose a scheme of spin transistor using a $T$-shaped structure with local Rashba interaction. A wide antiresonance energy gap appears due to the interplay of two types of interference, the Fano-Rashba interference and the structure interference. A large current from the gap area can be obtained via changing the Rashba strength and/or the length of the sidearm by using gate voltage. The robustness of the antiresonance gap against strong disorder is demonstrated and shows the feasibility of this structure for the real application.
A detailed description of the tunneling processes within Aharonov-Bohm (AB) rings containing two-dimensional quantum dots is presented. We show that the electronic propagation through the interferometer is controlled by the spectral properties of the embedded dots and by their coupling with the ring. The transmittance of the interferometer is computed by the Landauer-Büttiker formula. Numerical results are presented for an AB interferometer containing two coupled dots. The charging diagrams for a double-dot interferometer and the Aharonov Bohm oscillations are obtained, in agreement with the r…
We calculate the conductance through strongly correlated T-shaped molecular or quantum dot systems under the influence of phonons. The system is modelled by the extended Anderson-Holstein Hamiltonian. The finite-U mean-field slave boson approach is used to study many-body effects. Phonons influence both interference and correlations. Depending on the dot unperturbed energy and the strength of electron-phonon interaction the system is occupied by a different number of electrons which effectively interact with each other repulsively or attractively. This leads together with the interference effe…

As the Fano effect is an interference phenomenon where tunneling paths compete for the electronic transport, it becomes a probe to catch fingerprints of Majorana fermions lying on condensed matter systems. In this work we benefit of this mechanism by proposing as a route for that an Aharonov-Bohm-like interferometer composed by two quantum dots, being one of them coupled to a Majorana bound state, which is attached to one of the edges of a semi-infinite Kitaev wire within the topological phase. By changing the Fermi energy of the leads and the symmetric detuning of the levels for the dots, we …
We demonstrate delicate control over the Kondo effect and its interplay with quantum interference in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer containing one Kondo dot and one noninteracting dot. It is shown that the Kondo resonance undergoes a dramatic evolution as the interdot tunnel coupling progressively increases. A novel triple Kondo splitting occurs from the interference between constant and Lorentzian conduction bands that cooperate in forming the Kondo singlet. The device also manifests a highly controllable Fano-Kondo effect in coherent electronic transport, and can be tuned to a regime where …
We present a microscopic picture of quantum transport in quantum antidots in the quantum Hall regime taking electron interactions into account. We discuss the edge state structure, energy level evolution, charge quantization and linear-response conductance as the magnetic field or gate voltage is varied. Particular attention is given to the conductance oscillations due to Aharonov-Bohm interference and their unexpected periodicity. To explain the latter we propose the mechanisms of scattering by point defects and Coulomb blockade tunneling. They are supported by self-consistent calculations in…
We explore theoretically the influence of Fano interference in the so-called Majorana oscillations in a T-shaped hybrid setup formed by a quantum dot (QD) placed between conducting leads and side-coupled to a topological superconducting nanowire (TSNW) hosting zero-energy Majorana bound states (MBSs) at the ends. Differential conductance as a function of the external magnetic field reveals oscillatory behavior. Both the shape and amplitude of the oscillations depend on the bias-voltage, degree of MBSs non-locality and Fano parameter of the system determining the regime of interference. When th…
Correlation effects on electron transport through a system of T-shaped double-dots are investigated, for which only one of the dots is directly connected to the leads. We evaluate the local density of states and the conductance by means of the non-crossing approximation at finite temperatures as well as the slave-boson mean field approximation at zero temperature. It is found that the dot which is not directly connected to the leads considerably influences the conductance, making its behavior quite different from the case of a single-dot system. In particular, we find a novel phenomenon in the…
We investigate the charge-states coherence underlying the nonequilibirum transport through a spinless double-dot Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. Both the current noise spectrum and real-time dynamics are evaluated with the well-established dissipaton-equation-of-motion method. The resulted spectrums show the characteristic peaks and dips, arising from coherent Rabi oscillation dynamics, with the environment-assisted indirect inter-dot tunnel coupling mechanism. The observed spectroscopic features are in a quantitative agreement to the real-time dynamics of the reduced density matrix off-dia…
It was recently pointed out that Halperin's 113 topological order explains the transport experiments in the quantum Hall liquid at filling factor $ν=5/2$. The 113 order, however, cannot be easily distinguished from other likely topological orders at $ν=5/2$ such as the non-Abelian Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states and the Abelian Halperin 331 state in Fabry-Perot interferometry. We show that an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer provides a clear identification of these candidate $ν=5/2$ states. Specifically, the $I$-$V$ curve for the tunneling current through the interferometer is more asy…
We investigate the thermoelectric properties of a T-shaped double quantum dot system described by a generalized Anderson Hamiltonian. The system's electrical conduction (G) and the fundamental thermoelectric parameters such as the Seebeck coefficient ($S$) and the thermal conductivity ($κ$), along with the system's thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) are numerically estimated based on a Green's function formalism that includes contributions up to the Hartree-Fock level. Our results account for finite onsite Coulomb interaction terms in both component quantum dots and discuss various ways leadi…
We design an ingenious spintronic quantum eraser to quantitatively probe the two-electron entanglement. It is shown that the concurrence of two spin-entangled electrons is directly given by the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation amplitude of the Fano factor, a measurable current-current correlation, making it rather promising to experimentally quantify the two-electron entanglement. The singlet and triplet entangled states are distinguished by the opposite signs in the Fano factor. Since the main building blocks in the designed setup, an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a spin filter, have al…
In this paper, we investigate the transport through a T-shaped double quantum dot coupled to two normal metal leads left and right and a superconducting lead. Analytical expressions of Andreev transmission and local Density of States of the system at zero temperature have been obtained. We study the role of the superconducting lead in the quantum interferometric features of the double quantum dot. We report for first time the Fano effect produced by Andreev bound states in a side quantum dot. Our results show that as a consequence of quantum interference and proximity effect, the transmission …
We examine the influence of the superconducting proximity effect on the transport properties of a T-shaped double quantum dot strongly coupled to two normal, nonmagnetic or ferromagnetic leads. We show that the two-stage Kondo screening may be suppressed or enhanced by the presence of pairing correlations, depending on the specific geometric arrangement of the device. We explain our results by invoking effective decrease of Coulomb interactions by proximity effect and find qualitatively correct description in many cases, although spin-filtering effect stemming from spin-dependent Fano-Kondo in…
We investigate the conductance of an undoped graphene sheet with two metallic contacts and an electrostatically gated island (quantum dot) between the contacts. Our analysis is based on the Matrix Green Function formalism, which was recently adapted to graphene by Titov {\em et al.} [Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 104}, 076802 (2010)]. We find pronounced differences between the case of a stadium-shaped dot (which has chaotic classical dynamics) and a disc-shaped dot (which has integrable classical dynamics) in the limit that the dot size is small in comparison to the distance between the contacts. I…
We consider transport in a diffusive cross-shaped Andreev interferometer geometry, both theoretically and experimentally. A strong and unexpected modulation of the conductance with the superconducting phase is found. In particular, a reversed resistance vs. phase difference is predicted, where the resistance is decreased by a phase gradient. A comparison of our quasiclassical calculation with experimental data shows quantitative agreement if we account for diamagnetic screening.
In this work, we demonstrate an equivalence on the single-electron transport properties between systems of different nature, a topological quantum system and a (conventional) non-topological one. Our results predicts that the Fano resonances obtained in a T-shaped double quantum dot system coupled to two normal leads and one superconducting lead (QD-QD-S) are identical to the obtained in a ring system composed of a quantum dot coupled to two Majorana bound states confined at the ends of a one dimensional topological superconductor nanowire (QD-MBSs). We show that the non-zero value of the Fano…
