We introduce a new conjecture on products of two distinct primes that would provide a partial answer to a conjecture of McIntosh. Also, $\binom{2p-1}{p-1}-1$ is written in terms of a polynomial in prime $p$ over the integers and we discuss one way this form may be useful.
For any integer $m\ge0$, we recall that triangular numbers are those $\mathbf{T}(m)=\frac{m(m+1)}{2}$. A conjecture of Sun Zhi-Wei states that an integer $2^n\pm n$ with any $n>2$ can not be a triangular number. The motivation of this work is to confirm this conjecture.
The main purpose of this article is to study higher power mean values of generalized quadratic Gauss sums using estimates for character sums, analytic method and algebraic geometric methods. In this article, we prove two conjectures which were proposed in \cite{BLZ}.
In this article we deal with the problem of counting the number of pairs of normalized eigenforms $ (f,g) $ of weight $k$ and level $N$ such that $ a_p (f) = a_p (g) $ where $a_p (f) $ denotes the $p-$th Fourier coefficient of $f$. Here $p$ is a fixed prime.
We introduce a collection of polynomials $F_N$, associated to each positive integer $N$, whose divisibility properties yield a reformulation of the Goldbach conjecture. While this reformulation certainly does not lead to a resolution of the conjecture, it does suggest two natural generalizations for which we provide some numerical evidence. As these polynomials $F_N$ are independently interesting, we further explore their basic properties, giving, among other things, asymptotic estimates on the growth of their coefficients.
We prove a conjecture of Zagier about the inverse of a $(K-1)\times (K-1)$ matrix $A=A_{K}$ using elementary methods. This formula allows one to express the the product of single zeta values $ζ(2r)ζ(2K+1-2r)$, $1\leq r\leq K-1$, in terms of the double zeta values $ζ(2r,2K+1-2r)$, $1\leq r\leq K-1$ and $ζ(2K+1)$.
We prove Haynes' version of the Duffin--Schaeffer conjecture for the $p$-adic numbers. In addition, we prove several results about an associated related but false conjecture, related to $p$-adic approximation in the spirit of Jarník and Lutz.
We propose a function-field analog of Pisot's $d$-th root conjecture on linear recurrences, and prove it under some "non-triviality" assumption. Besides a recent result of Pasten-Wang on B{ü}chi's $d$-th power problem, our main tool, which is also developed in this paper, is a function-field analog of an GCD estimate in a recent work of Levin and Levin-Wang. As an easy corollary of such GCD estimate, we also obtain an asymptotic result.
Recent work of Borwein, Choi, and the second author examined a collection of polynomials closely related to the Goldbach conjecture: the polynomial $F_N$ is divisible by the $N$th cyclotomic polynomial if and only if there is no representation of $N$ as the sum of two odd primes. The coefficients of these polynomials stabilize, as $N$ grows, to a fixed sequence $a(m)$; they derived upper and lower bounds for $a(m)$, and an asymptotic formula for the summatory function $A(M)$ of the sequence, both under the assumption of a famous conjecture of Hardy and Littlewood. In this article we improve th…
Recently, Andrews, Chan, Kim and Osburn introduced a $q$-series $h(q)$ for the study of the first positive rank and crank moments for overpartitions. They conjectured that for all integers $m \geq 3$, \begin{equation*}\label{hqcon} \frac{1}{(q)_{\infty}} (h(q) - m h(q^{m})) \end{equation*} has positive power series coefficients for all powers of $q$. Byungchan Kim, Eunmi Kim and Jeehyeon Seo provided a combinatorial interpretation and proved it is asymptotically true by circle method. In this note, we show this conjecture is true if $m$ is any positive power of $2$, and we show that in order t…
Let $p\equiv 4,7\mod 9$ be a rational prime number such that $3\mod p$ is not a cubic residue. In this paper we prove the 3-part of the product of the full BSD conjectures for $E_p$ and $E_{3p^3}$ is true using an explicit Gross-Zagier formula, where $E_p: x^3+y^3=p$ and $E_{3p^2}: x^3+y^3=3p^2$ are the elliptic curves related to the Sylvester conjecture and cube sum problems.

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an optimal elliptic curve of analytic rank zero. It follows from the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for elliptic curves of analytic rank zero that the order of the torsion subgroup of $E/\mathbb{Q}$ divides the product of the order of the Shafarevich--Tate group of $E/\mathbb{Q}$, the (global) Tamagawa number of $E/\mathbb{Q}$, and the Tamagawa number of $E/\mathbb{Q}$ at infinity. This consequence of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture was noticed by Agashe and Stein in 2005. In this paper, we prove this divisibility statement unconditionally in many cases, in…
We study two kinds of conjectural bounds for the prime gap after the k-th prime $p_k$: (A) $p_{k+1} < (p_k)^{1+1/k}$ and (B) $p_{k+1}-p_k < \log^2 p_k - \log p_k - b$ for $k>9$. The upper bound (A) is equivalent to Firoozbakht's conjecture. We prove that (A) implies (B) with $b=1$; on the other hand, (B) with $b=1.17$ implies (A). We also give other sufficient conditions for (A) that have the form (B) with $b\to1$ as $k\to\infty$.
A strictly increasing sequence $\mathscr{A}$ of positive integers is said to be primitive if no term of $\mathscr{A}$ divides any other. Erdős showed that the series $\sum_{a \in \mathscr{A}} \frac{1}{a \log a}$, where $\mathscr{A}$ is a primitive sequence different from $\{1\}$, are all convergent and their sums are bounded above by an absolute constant. Besides, he conjectured that the upper bound of the preceding sums is reached when $\mathscr{A}$ is the sequence of the prime numbers. The purpose of this paper is to study the Erdős conjecture. In the first part of the paper, we give two sig…
In this paper, by using the theory of elliptic curves, we discuss several Diophantine equations related with the so-called figurate primes. Meanwhile, we raise several conjectures related with figurate primes and Hilbert's 8th problem, including Goldbach's conjecture, twin primes conjecture and Catalan's conjecture as well.
The 1-3-5 conjecture of Z.-W. Sun states that any $n\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+3y+5z$ is a square. In this paper, via the theory of ternary quadratic forms and related modular forms, we study the integer version of the 1-3-5 conjecture and related weighted sums of four squares with certain linear restrictions. Here are two typical results in this paper: (i) There is a finite set $A$ of positive integers such that any sufficiently large integer not in the set $\{16^ka:\ a\in A,\ k\in\mathbb N\}$ can be written as $x…
For a set $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$, let $R_A(n)$ denote the number of ordered pairs $(a,a')\in A\times A$ such that $a+a'=n$. The celebrated Erdős-Turán conjecture says that, if $R_A(n)\ge 1$ for all sufficiently large integers $n$, then the representation function $R_A(n)$ cannot be bounded. For any positive integer $m$, Ruzsa's number $R_m$ is defined to be the least positive integer $r$ such that there exists a set $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m$ with $1\le R_A(n)\le r$ for all $n\in \mathbb{Z}_m$. In 2008, Chen proved that $R_{m}\le 288$ for all positive integers $m$. In thi…
In this paper we confirm three conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on determinants. We first show that any odd integer $n>3$ divides the determinant $$\left|(i^2+dj^2)\left(\frac{i^2+dj^2}n\right)\right|_{0\le i,j\le (n-1)/2},$$ where $d$ is any integer and $(\frac{\cdot}n)$ is the Jacobi symbol. Then we prove some divisibility results concerning $|(i+dj)^n|_{0\le i,j\le n-1}$ and $|(i^2+dj^2)^n|_{0\le i,j\le n-1}$, where $d\not=0$ and $n>2$ are integers. Finally, for any odd prime $p$ and integers $c$ and $d$ with $p\nmid cd$, we determine completely the Legendre symbol $(\frac{S_c(d,p)}p)$, where $S_c(…
I revisit Bressoud's generalised Borwein conjecture. Making use of certain positivity-preserving transformations for q-binomial coefficients, I establish the truth of infinitely many new cases of the Bressoud conjecture. In addition, I prove new doubly-bounded refinement of the Foda-Quano identities. Finally, I discuss new companions to the Bressoud even moduli identities. In particular, all 10 mod 20 identities are derived.
In 2012 Bryson, Ono, Pitman and Rhoades showed how the generating functions for certain strongly unimodal sequences are related to quantum modular and mock modular forms. They proved some parity results and conjectured some mod 4 congruences for the coefficients of these generating functions. In 2016 Kim, Lim and Lovejoy obtained similar results for odd-balanced unimodal sequences and made similar mod 4 conjectures. We prove all of these mod 4 conjectures and similar congruences for the Andrews spt-function and related mock theta functions. Our method of proof involves new Hecke-Rogers type id…
Let $a,b$ and $n$ be positive integers with $a>b$. In this note, we prove that $$(2bn+1)(2bn+3){2bn \choose bn}\bigg|3(a-b)(3a-b){2an \choose an}{an\choose bn}.$$ This confirms a recent conjecture of Amdeberhan and Moll.
Using the following $_4F_3$ transformation formula $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n}{-x-1\choose k}^2{x\choose n-k}^2=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k}^2{x+k\choose 2k}, $$ which can be proved by Zeilberger's algorithm, we confirm some special cases of a recent conjecture of Z.-W. Sun on integer-valued polynomials.
According to two remarkable theorems of Nyman and Báez-Duarte, the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to a simply-stated criterion concerning least-squares approximation. In carrying out computations related to this criterion, we have observed a curious phenomenon: for no apparent reason, at least the first billion entries of a certain infinite triangular matrix associated to the Riemann zeta function are all positive. In this article we describe the background leading to this observation, and make a conjecture.
In this paper, we discuss a few recent conjectures made by George Beck related to the ranks and cranks of partitions. The conjectures for the rank of a partition were proved by Andrews by using results due to Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer on a suitable generating function, while the conjectures related to cranks were studied by Shane Chern using weighted partition moments. We revisit the conjectures on the crank of a partition by decomposing the relevant generating function and further explore connections with Apple-Lerch series and tenth order mock theta functions.
Recently, very interesting results have been obtained concerning the Fourier spectra of power permutations over a finite field. In this note we survey the recent ideas of Aubry, Feng, Katz, and Langevin, and we pose new open problems related to old conjectures proposed by Helleseth in the middle of the seventies.
We study results related to a conjecture formulated by Strohmer and Beaver about optimal Gaussian Gabor frame set-ups. Our attention will be restricted to the case of Gabor systems with standard Gaussian window and rectangular lattices of density 2. Although this case has been fully treated by Faulhuber and Steinerberger, the results in this work are new and quite curious. Indeed, the optimality of the square lattice for the Tolimieri and Orr bound already implies the optimality of the square lattice for the sharp lower frame bound. Our main tools include determinants of Laplace--Beltrami oper…
Kanade and Russell conjectured several Rogers-Ramanujan-type partition identities, some of which are related to level $2$ characters of the affine Lie algebra $A_9^{(2)}$. Many of these conjectures have been proved by Bringmann, Jennings-Shaffer and Mahlburg. We give new proofs of five conjectures first proved by those authors, as well as four others that have been open until now. Our proofs for the new cases use quadratic transformations for Askey-Wilson and Rogers polynomials. We also obtain some related results, including a new proof of a partition identity conjectured by Capparelli and fir…
We study a variety of problems about homothets of sets related to the Kakeya conjecture. In particular, we show many of these problems are equivalent to the arithmetic Kakeya conjecture of Katz and Tao. We also provide a proof that the arithmetic Kakeya conjecture implies the Kakeya conjecture for packing dimension, as this implication was previously only known for Minkowski dimension. We consider several questions analogous to the classical results of Stein and Bourgain about the Lebesgue measure of a set containing a sphere centered at every point of $[0,1]^n$, where we replace spheres by ar…
We present an infinite family of Borwein type $+ - - $ conjectures. The expressions in the conjecture are related to multiple basic hypergeometric series with Macdonald polynomial argument.
For positive integers $s$ and $L \geq 3$, Berkovich and Uncu (Ann. Comb. $23$ ($2019$) $263$--$284$) conjectured an inequality between the sizes of two closely related sets of partitions whose parts lie in the interval $\{s, \ldots, L+s\}$. Further restrictions are placed on the sets by specifying impermissible parts as well as a minimum part. The authors proved their conjecture for the cases $s=1$ and $s=2$. In the present article, we prove the conjecture for general $s$ by proving a stronger theorem. We also prove other related conjectures found in the same paper.
In the first part of the paper, we consider the relation between kissing number and the secrecy gain. We show that on an $n=24m+8k$-dimensional even unimodular lattice, if the shortest vector length is $\geq 2m$, then as the number of vectors of length $2m$ decreases, the secrecy gain increases. We will also prove a similar result on general unimodular lattices. We will also consider the situations with shorter vectors. Furthermore, assuming the conjecture by Belfiore and Solé, we will calculate the difference between inverses of secrecy gains as the number of vectors varies. We will show by a…
In order to better understand the structure of classical rings of invariants for binary forms, Dixmier proposed, as a conjectural homogeneous system of parameters, an explicit collection of invariants previously studied by Hilbert. We generalize Dixmier's collection and show that a particular subfamily is algebraically independent. Our proof relies on showing certain alternating sums of products of binomial coefficients are nonzero. Along the way we provide a very elementary proof à la Racah, namely, only using the Chu-Vandermonde Theorem, for Dixon's Summation Theorem. We also provide explici…
In this short survey article, we aim to provide an up to date information on the progress made towards Schurs exponent conjecture and related conjectures. We also mention the connection between Schurs exponent conjecture and Noether's Rationality problem.
This list of problems arose as a collaborative effort among the participants of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft on Mathematical Quasicrystals, which was held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach in October 2015. The purpose of our meeting was to bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines with a common goal of understanding different viewpoints and approaches surrounding the theory of mathematical quasicrystals. The problems reflect this goal and this diversity and we hope that they will motivate further cross-disciplinary research and lead to new advances in our overall v…
