Chae and Wolf recently constructed discretely self-similar solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations for any discretely self similar data in $L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$. Their solutions are in the class of local Leray solutions with projected pressure, and satisfy the "local energy inequality with projected pressure". In this note, for the same class of initial data, we construct discretely self-similar suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations that satisfy the classical local energy inequality of Scheffer and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg. We also obtain an explicit formula for the pressure in terms of the velocity. Our argument involves a new purely local energy estimate for discretely self-similar solutions with data in $L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$ and an approximation of divergence free, discretely self-similar vector fields in $L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$ by divergence free, discretely self-similar elements of $L^3_w$.
Extending the work of Jia and Sverak on self-similar solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, we show the existence of large, forward, discretely self-similar solutions.
We prove the existence of a forward discretely self-similar solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in $ \Bbb R^{3}\times (0,+\infty)$ for a discretely self-similar initial velocity belonging to $ L^2_{ loc}(\Bbb R^{3})$.
We study the scenario of discretely self-similar blow-up for Navier-Stokes equations. We prove that at the possible blow-up time such solutions only one point singularity. In case of the scaling parameter $ λ$ near $ 1$ we remove the singularity.
We study scenarios of self-similar type blow-up for the incompressible Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. The previous notions of the discretely (backward) self-similar solution and the asymptotically self-similar solution are generalized to the locally asymptotically discretely self-similar solution. We prove that there exists no such locally asymptotically discretely self-similar blow-up for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations if the blow-up profile is a time periodic function belonging to $C^1(\Bbb R ; L^3(\Bbb R^3)\cap C^2 (\Bbb R^3))$. For the 3D Euler equations we show that the scenario o…
In this paper, we prove the existence of forward discretely self-similar solutions to the MHD equations and the viscoelastic Navier-Stokes equations with damping with large weak $L^3$ initial data. The same proving techniques are also applied to construct self-similar solutions to the MHD equations and the viscoelastic Navier-Stokes equations with damping with large weak $L^3$ initial data. This approach is based on [Z. Bradshaw and T.-P. Tsai, Ann. Henri Poincar'{e}, vol. 18, no. 3, 1095-1119, 2017].
For any discretely self-similar, incompressible initial data $v_0$ which satisfies $\|v_0 \|_{L^3_w(\mathbb R^3)}\leq c_0$ where $c_0$ is allowed to be large, we construct a forward discretely self-similar local Leray solution in the sense of Lemarié-Rieusset to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space. No further assumptions are imposed on the initial data; in particular, the data is not required to be continuous or locally bounded on $\mathbb R^3\setminus \{0\}$. The same method is used to construct self-similar solutions for any $-1$-homogeneous initial data in $L^3_w$.
We construct self-similar solutions to the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for divergence free, self-similar initial data that can be large in the critical Besov space $\dot B^{-1+3/p}_{p,\infty}$ where $3< p< 6$. We also construct discretely self-similar solutions for divergence free initial data in $\dot B^{-1+3/p}_{p,\infty}$ for $3<p<6$ that is discretely self-similar for some scaling factor $λ>1$. These results extend those of \cite{BT1} which dealt with initial data in $L^3_w$ since $L^3_w\subsetneq \dot B^{-1+3/p}_{p,\infty}$ for $p>3$. We also provide several concrete example…
We show the existence of global weak solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with initial velocity in the weighted spaces L 2 w$γ$ , where w $γ$ (x) = (1 + |x|) --$γ$ and 0 < $γ$ $\le$ 2, using new energy controls. As application we give a new proof of the existence of global weak discretely self-similar solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for discretely self-similar initial velocities which are locally square inte-grable.
This paper deals with the existence of global weak solutions for 3D MHD equations when the initial data belong to the weighted spaces $L^2_{w_γ}$, with $w_γ(x)=(1+| x|)^{-γ}$ and $0 \leq γ\leq 2$. Moreover, we prove the existence of discretely self-similar solutions for 3D MHD equations for discretely self-similar initial data which are locally square integrable. Our methods are inspired of a recent work of P. Fernández-Dalgo and P.G. Lemarié-Riseusset for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations.
We prove the unique existence of solutions of the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in an exterior domain with small non-decaying boundary data, for $t \in R$ or $t \in (0,\infty)$. In the latter case it is coupled with small initial data in weak $L^{3}$. As a corollary, the unique existence of time-periodic solutions is shown for the small periodic boundary data. We next show that the spatial asymptotics of the periodic solution is given by the same Landau solution at all times. Lastly we show that if the boundary datum is time-periodic and the initial datum is asymptotically discrete…
We prove short time regularity of suitable weak solutions of 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations near a point where the initial data is locally in $L^3$. The result is applied to the regularity problems of solutions with uniformly small local $L^3$ norms, and of forward discretely self-similar solutions.
We introduce new classes of solutions to the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the whole and half spaces that add rotational correction to self-similar and discretely self-similar solutions. We construct forward solutions in these new classes for arbitrarily large initial data in $L^3_w$ on the whole and half spaces. We also comment on the backward case.
Landau solutions are special solutions to the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the three dimensional space excluding the origin. They are self-similar and axisymmetric with no swirl. In fact, any self-similar smooth solution must be a Landau solution. In the effort of extending this result to the one for the solution class with the pointwise scale-invariant bound $|u(x)|\leq C_0|x|^{-1}$ for some $C_0>0$, we consider axisymmetric discretely self-similar solutions, and investigate the existence of such solution curve emanating from some Landau solution. We prove that the inc…
We obtain a global existence result for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with a large class of data allowing growth at spatial infinity. Namely, we show the global existence of suitable weak solutions when the initial data belongs to the weighted space $\mathring M^{2,2}_{\mathcal C}$ introduced in [Z. Bradshaw and I. Kukavica, Existence of suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations for intermittent data, J. Math. Fluid Mech. to appear]. This class is strictly larger than currently available spaces of initial data for global existence and includes all locally square in…
We prove an $ε$-regularity criterion for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in terms of initial data. It shows that if a scaled local $L^2$ norm of initial data is sufficiently small around the origin, a suitable weak solution is regular in a set enclosed by a paraboloid started from the origin. The result is applied to the estimate of the regular set for local energy solutions with initial data in weighted $L^2$ spaces. We also apply this result to studying energy concentration near a possible blow-up time and regularity of forward discretely self-similar solutions.
This paper addresses several problems associated to local energy solutions (in the sense of Lemarié-Rieusset) to the Navier-Stokes equations with initial data which is sufficiently small at large or small scales as measured using truncated Morrey-type quantities, namely: (1) global existence for a class of data including the critical $L^2$-based Morrey space; (2) initial and eventual regularity of local energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with initial data sufficiently small at small or large scales; (3) small-large uniqueness of local energy solutions for data in the critical $L^2…
We adapt a previously introduced continuous in time data assimilation (downscaling) algorithm for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations to the more realistic case when the measurements are obtained discretely in time and may be contaminated by systematic errors. Our algorithm is designed to work with a general class of observables, such as low Fourier modes and local spatial averages over finite volume elements. Under suitable conditions on the relaxation (nudging) parameter, the spatial mesh resolution and the time step between successive measurements, we obtain an asymptotic in time estimate of the…
In this article we consider the discretely self-similar singular solutions of the Euler equations, and the possible velocity profiles concerned not only have decaying spatial asymptotics, but also have unconventional non-decaying asymptotics. By relying on the local energy inequality of the velocity profiles and the bootstrapping method, we prove some nonexistence results and show the energy behavior of the possible nontrivial velocity profiles. For the case with non-decaying asymptotics, the needed representation formula of the pressure profile in terms of velocity profiles is also given and …
This paper is concerned with quantitative estimates for the Navier-Stokes equations. First we investigate the relation of quantitative bounds to the behaviour of critical norms near a potential singularity with Type I bound $\|u\|_{L^{\infty}_{t}L^{3,\infty}_{x}}\leq M$. Namely, we show that if $T^*$ is a first blow-up time and $(0,T^*)$ is a singular point then $$\|u(\cdot,t)\|_{L^{3}(B_{0}(R))}\geq C(M)\log\Big(\frac{1}{T^*-t}\Big),\,\,\,\,\,\,R=O((T^*-t)^{\frac{1}{2}-}).$$ We demonstrate that this potential blow-up rate is optimal for a certain class of potential non-zero backward discretel…
In the note, a local regularity condition for axisymmetric solutions to the non-stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations is proven. It reads that axially symmetric energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations have no Type I blowups.
Local regularity of axially symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations is studied. It is shown that under certain natural assumptions there are no singularities of Type I.
In the paper, a new {\it slightly supercritical} condition, providing {\it local} regularity of axially symmetric solutions to the non-stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations, is discussed. It generalises almost all known results in the local regularity theory of weak axisymmetric solutions.
We study the regularity of the weak limit of a sequence of dissipative solutions to the Navier--Stokes equations when no assumptions is made on the behavior of the pressures.
We address the local well-posedness for the stochastic Navier-Stokes system with multiplicative cylindrical noise in the whole space. More specifically, we prove that there exists a unique local strong solution to the system in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for $p>3$.
For the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with a multiplicative white noise on ${\mathbb T}^{3}$, we prove that there exists a unique strong solution locally in time when the initial datum belongs to $L^p(Ω; L^p)$ for $p>3$.
This paper presents a new approach to the local well-posedness of the $1d$ compressible Navier-Stokes systems with rough initial data. Our approach is based on establishing some smoothing and Lipschitz-type estimates for the $1d$ parabolic equation with piecewise continuous coefficients.
This is an expository paper on the theory of local regularity for weak solutions to the non-stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations near the boundary of a domain.
In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of local strong solutions to the kinetic Cucker--Smale model coupled with the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equation in the whole space. Moreover, the blowup mechanism for strong solutions to the coupled system is also investigated.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of local Leray solutions starting from a locally square-integrable initial data to the fractional Navier-Stokes equations with $s\in [3/4,1)$. Furthermore, we prove its local in time existence when $s\in (3/4, 1)$. In particular, if the locally square-integrable initial data vanishs at infinity, we show that the fractional Navier-Stokes equations admit a global-in-time local Leray solution when $s\in [5/6, 1)$. For such local Leray solutions starting from locally square-integrable initial data vanishing at infinity, the singularity only occurs in $B_R(0)…
In this paper, the local well-posedness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is proved with the initial date being allowed to have vacuum. The main contribution of this paper is that the well-posedness is established without assuming any compatibility condition on the initial data, which was widely used before in many literatures concerning the well-posedness of compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum.
This paper is concerned with the free boundary value problem for multi-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity where the flow density vanishes continuously across the free boundary. A local (in time) existence of weak solution is established, in particular, the density is positive and the solution is regular away from the free boundary.
We show that the classical Cauchy problem for the incompressible 3d Navier-Stokes equations with $(-1)$-homogeneous initial data has a global scale-invariant solution which is smooth for positive times. Our main technical tools are local-in-space regularity estimates near the initial time, which are of independent interest.
The aim of this work is to show the local null controllability of a fluid-solid interaction system by using a distributed control located in the fluid. The fluid is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Navier slip boundary conditions and the rigid body is governed by the Newton laws. Our main result yields that we can drive the velocities of the fluid and of the structure to 0 and we can control exactly the position of the rigid body. One important ingredient consists in a new Carleman estimate for a linear fluid-rigid body system with Navier boundary conditions. This work i…
The system of three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is considered. We obtain some new local energy bounds that enable us to improve several $ε$-regularity criteria. They key idea here is to view the `head pressure' as a signed distribution belonging to certain fractional Sobolev space of negative order. This allows us to capture the oscillation of the pressure in our criteria.
In this article we study three capillary compressible models (the classical local Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system and two non-local models) for large initial data, bounded away from zero, and with a reference pressure state $\barρ$ which is not necessarily stable ($P'(\barρ)$ can be non-positive). We prove that these systems have a unique local in time solution and we study the convergence rate of the solutions of the non-local models towards the local Korteweg model. The results are given for constant viscous coefficients and we explain how to extend them for density dependant coefficients.
The aim of the note is to proof a regularity result for weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations that are locally in $L_\infty(L^{3,\infty})$. It reads that, in a sense, the number of singular points at each time is at most finite. Our note is inspired by the paper of H. J. Choe, J. Wolf, M. Yang [1].
We are concerned with local regularity of the solutions for the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations near boundary. Firstly, we construct a bounded solution but its normal derivatives are singular in any $L^p$ with $1<p$ locally near boundary. On the other hand, we present criteria of solutions of the Stokes equations near boundary to imply that the gradients of solutions are bounded (in fact, even further Hölder continuous). Finally, we provide examples of solutions whose local regularity near boundary is optimal.
In this note, a new local regularity criteria for the axisymmetric solutions to the 3D Navier--Stokes equations is investigated. It is slightly supercritical and implies an upper bound for the oscillation of $Γ=r u^θ$: for any $0< τ<1$, there exists a constant $c>0$, $$ |Γ(r,x_{3},t)|\leq N e^{-c\, |\ln r|^τ},\ 0<r\leq \frac{1}{4}. $$
We investigate regularity estimates for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations above a highly oscillating Lipschitz boundary with the no-slip boundary condition. Our main result is an improved Lipschitz regularity estimate at scales larger than the boundary layer thickness. We also obtain an improved $C^{1,μ}$ estimate and identify the building blocks of the regularity theory, dubbed `Navier polynomials'. In the case when some structure is assumed on the oscillations of the boundary, for instance periodicity, these estimates can be seen as local error estimates. Although we handle the regulari…
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system on time-dependent domains with prescribed motion of the boundary. For both the no-slip boundary conditions as well as slip boundary conditions we prove local-in-time existence of strong solutions. These results are obtained using a transformation of the problem to a fixed domain and an existence theorem for Navier-Stokes like systems with lower order terms and perturbed boundary conditions. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness principle for slip boundary conditions which remained so far open question.
We formulate a new criterion for regularity of a suitable weak solution v to the Navier-Stokes equations at the space-time point (x_0,t_0). The criterion imposes a Serrin-type integrability condition on v only in a backward neighbourhood of (x_0,t_0), intersected with the exterior of a certain space-time paraboloid with vertex at point (x_0,t_0). We make no special assumptions on the solution in the interior of the paraboloid.
We study the regular sets of local energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in terms of conditions on the initial data. It is shown that if a weighted $L^2$ norm of the initial data is finite, then all local energy solutions are regular in a region confined by space-time hypersurfaces determined by the weight. This result refines and generalizes Theorems C and D of Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 35; 1982) and our recent paper [15] as well.
We address the local well-posedness of the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations. These equations, sometimes called reduced Navier-Stokes/Prandtl, appear as a formal limit of the Navier-Stokes system in thin domains, under certain constraints on the aspect ratio and the Reynolds number. It is known that without any structural assumption on the initial data, real-analyticity is both necessary and sufficient for the local well-posedness of the system. In this paper we prove that for convex initial data, local well-posedness holds under simple Gevrey regularity.
We study the partial regularity of suitable weak solutions to the three dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. There have been several attempts to refine the Caffarelli--Kohn--Nirenberg criterion (1982). We present an improved version of the CKN criterion with a direct method, which also provides the quantitative relation in Seregin's criterion (2007).
Two regularity criteria are established to highlight which Littlewood-Paley frequencies play an essential role in possible singularity formation in a Leray-Hopf weak solution to the Navier-Stokes equations in three spatial dimensions. One of these is a frequency localized refinement of known Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin-type regularity criteria restricted to a finite window of frequencies the lower bound of which diverges to $+\infty$ as $t$ approaches an initial singular time.
Sprays are complex flows constituted of dispersed particles in an underlying gas. In this paper, we are interested in the equations for moderately thick sprays consisting of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and Boltzmann BGK equation. Here the coupling of two equations is through a friction (or drag) force which depends on the density of compressible fluid and the relative velocity between particles and fluid. For the Navier-Stokes-BGK system, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces with exponential weight.
Barker recently proved new weak-strong uniqueness results for the Navier-Stokes equations based on a criterion involving Besov spaces and a proof through interpolation between Besov-H{ö}lder spaces and L 2. We improve slightly his results by considering Besov-Morrey spaces and interpolation between Besov-Morrey spaces and L 2 uloc. Let u 0 a divergence-free vector field on R 3. We shall consider weak solutions to the Cauchy initial value problem for the Navier-Stokes equations which satisfy energy estimates. The differential Navier-Stokes equations read as $\partial$ t u + u. $\nabla$ u = $Δ$ …
We prove the existence of short time solutions to the incompressible, isotropic Lagrangian Averaged Navier-Stokes equation with low regularity initial data in Besov spaces $B^{r}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $r>n/2p$. When $p=2$ and $n\geq 3$, we obtain global solutions, provided the parameters $r,q$ and $n$ satisfy certain inequalities. This is an improvement over known analogous Sobolev space results, which required $n=3$.
We consider the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ subject to the initial condition with initial velocity field in $L^{2}_{\rm loc} (\mathbb{R}^3)$ such that $\limsup_{R \to +\infty } R^{-1} \|u_{0} \|_{ L^{2}(B(R))} < +\infty$. Our aim is to show the local existence of a weak solution, global existence of weak solution if $C=0$ and the partial regularity in the sense of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg.
We prove that suitable weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations exhibit Type I singularities if and only if there exists a non-trivial mild bounded ancient solution satisfying a Type I decay condition. The main novelty is in the reverse direction, which is based on the idea of zooming out on a regular solution to generate a singularity. By similar methods, we prove a Liouville theorem for ancient solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations bounded in $L^3$ along a backward sequence of times.
This paper is devoted to presenting new interior regularity criteria in terms of one velocity component for weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions. It is shown that the velocity is regular near a point $z$ if its scaled $L^p_tL^q_x$-norm of some quantities related to the velocity field is finite and the scaled $L^p_tL^q_x$-norm of one velocity component is sufficiently small near $z$.
In this paper, we establish $\varepsilon$-regularity criteria at one scale for suitable weak solutions to the five dimensional stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in both the unit ball $B_1$ and the unit half ball $B_1^+$, respectively, which improve previous results in [J. Math. Fluid Mech., 6(2004), pp 78--101] and [Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 41(1988), pp 437--458]. The proofs of the main results are based on an iteration argument, Campanato's method, and interpolation techniques.
