The aim of this work is to show the local null controllability of a fluid-solid interaction system by using a distributed control located in the fluid. The fluid is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system with Navier slip boundary conditions and the rigid body is governed by the Newton laws. Our main result yields that we can drive the velocities of the fluid and of the structure to 0 and we can control exactly the position of the rigid body. One important ingredient consists in a new Carleman estimate for a linear fluid-rigid body system with Navier boundary conditions. This work is done without imposing any geometrical conditions on the rigid body.
This paper is concerned with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability for the nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary conditions around a steady-state in an infinite slab, where the Navier-slip coefficients do not have defined sign and the slab is horizontally periodic. Motivated by [18], we extend the result from Dirichlet boundary condition to Navier-slip boundary conditions. Our results indicate the factor that "heavier density with increasing height" still plays a key role in the instability under Navier-slip boundary conditions.
This paper is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of the strong solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary conditions in a two-dimensional strip domain where the slip coefficients may not have defined sign. In the meantime, we also establish a number of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities in the corresponding Sobolev spaces which will be applicable to other similar situations.
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit problem for the 3-dimensional (3D) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a general bounded smooth domain of $R^3$ with the generalized Navier-slip boundary conditions (\ref{VSg}). Some uniform estimates on rates of convergence in $C([0,T],L^2(Ω))$ and $C([0,T],H^1(Ω))$ of the solutions to the corresponding solutions of the idea Euler equations with the standard slip boundary condition are obtained.
This paper concerns the low Mach number limit of weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic fluids in a bounded domain with a Navier-slip boundary condition. In \cite{DGLM99}, it has been proved that if the velocity is imposed the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, as the Mach number goes to 0, the velocity of the compressible flow converges strongly in $L^2$ under the geometrical assumption (H) on the domain. We justify the same strong convergence when the slip length in the Navier condition is the reciprocal of the square root of the Mach number.
This paper studies the incompressible limit of global strong solutions to the three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations associated with Navier's slip boundary condition, provided that the time derivatives, up to first order, of solutions are bounded initially. The main idea is to derive a differential inequality with decay, so that the estimates are bounded uniformly both in the Mach number 0<ε<=ε0 for some ε0>0 and the time t>=0.
In this note we consider the inviscid limit for the 3D Boussinesq equations without diffusion, under slip boundary conditions of Navier's type. We first study more closely the Navier-Stokes equations, to better understand the problem. The role of the initial data is also emphasized in connection with the vanishing viscosity limit.
We establish a Liouville type result for a backward global solution to the Navier-Stokes equations in the half plane with the no-slip boundary condition. No assumptions on spatial decay for the vorticity nor the velocity field are imposed. We study the vorticity equations instead of the original Navier-Stokes equations. As an application, we extend the geometric regularity criterion for the Navier-Stokes equations in the three-dimensional half space under the no-slip boundary condition.
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with a Navier slip boundary condition on general compact and smooth domains in $\mathbf{R}^3$. We first obtain the higher order regularity estimates for the solutions to Prandtl's equation boundary layers. Furthermore, we prove that the strong solution to Navier-Stokes equations converges to the Eulerian one in $C([0,T];H^1(Ω))$ and $L^\infty((0,T)\timesø)$, where $T$ is independent of the viscosity, provided that initial velocity is regular enough. Furthermore, rates of convergence are obt…
In this work, we study the motion of a rigid body in a bounded domain which is filled with a compressible isentropic fluid. We consider the Navier-slip boundary condition at the interface as well as at the boundary of the domain. This is the first mathematical analysis of a compressible fluid-rigid body system where Navier-slip boundary conditions are considered. We prove existence of a weak solution of the fluid-structure system up to collision.
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system on time-dependent domains with prescribed motion of the boundary, supplemented with slip boundary conditions for the velocity. We derive the relative entropy inequality in the spirit of Feireisl et al. for the system on moving domain and use it to prove the weak-strong uniqueness property.
In this paper, we establish the short time inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with critical Navier-slip boundary conditions for analytic data on half-space, a boundary condition that is physically derived from the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equations with the Maxwell boundary conditions. The analysis is built upon the recent framework developed by T. T. Nguyen and T. T. Nguyen (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 230(3):1103-1129, 2018.) in the case of the classical no-slip boundary conditions. The novelty in this paper is to derive the precise pointwise bound on the …
We consider the compressible (barotropic) Navier-Stokes system on time-dependent domains, supplemented with slip boundary conditions. Our approach is based on penalization of the boundary behaviour, viscosity, and the pressure in the weak formulation. Global-in-time weak solutions are obtained.
This paper concerns the 3-dimensional Lagrangian Navier-Stokes $α$ model and the limiting Navier-Stokes system on smooth bounded domains with a class of vorticity-slip boundary conditions and the Navier-slip boundary conditions. It establishes the spectrum properties and regularity estimates of the associated Stokes operators, the local well-posedness of the strong solution and global existence of weak solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing $α$ limit to a weak solution of the corresponding initial-boundary value problem of the Navier-Stokes s…
We obtain the existence, regularity, uniqueness of the non-stationary problems of a class of non-Newtonian fluid is a power law fluid with $p>9/5$ in the half-space under slip boundary conditions.
The choice of the boundary conditions in mechanical problems has to reflect the interaction of the considered material with the surface, despite the assumption of the no-slip condition is preferred to avoid boundary terms in the analysis and slipping effects are usually overlooked. Besides the "static slip models", there are phenomena not accurately described by them, e.g. in the moment when the slip changes rapidly, the wall shear stress and the slip can exhibit a sudden overshoot and subsequent relaxation. When these effects become significant, the so-called dynamic slip phenomenon occurs. W…
We study the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-type boundary condition in a two-dimensional simply connected bounded domain with $C^{\infty}$ boundary $\partialΩ.$ By some new estimates on the boundary related to the Navier-type slip boundary condition, the classical solution to the initial-boundary-value problem of this system exists globally in time provided the initial energy is suitably small even if the density has large oscillations and contains vacuum states. Futhermore, we also prove that the oscillation of the density will grow unboundedly in the long run wit…
In this paper, we deal with the controllability properties of a system of $m$ coupled Stokes systems or $m$ coupled Navier-Stokes systems. We show the null-controllability of such systems in the case where the coupling is in a cascade form and when the control acts only on one of the systems. Moreover, we impose that this control has a vanishing component so that we control a $m\times N$ state (corresponding to the velocities of the fluids) by $N-1$ distributed scalar controls. The proof of the controllability of the coupled Stokes system is based on a Carleman estimate for the adjoint system.…
We consider the 3D Navier-Stokes system driven by an additive finite-dimensional control force. The purpose of this paper is to show how the approximate controllability of this system can be derived from the approximate controllability of the Euler system linearised around some suitable trajectory. The proof presented here is shorter than the previous ones obtained by Lie algebraic methods and gives some new information about the structure of the control. The dimension of the control space provided by this approach is larger, but it is still uniform with respect to the viscosity.
The goal of this article is to show a local exact controllability to smooth (C2) trajectories for the 2-d density dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our controllability result requires some geometric condition on the ow of the target trajectory, which is remanent from the transport equation satisfied by the density. The proof of this result uses a fixed point argument in suitable spaces adapted to a Carleman weight function that follows the ow of the target trajectory. Our result requires the proof of new Carleman estimates for heat and Stokes equations.
We consider the p-Laplacian system of N equations in n space variables, 1< p\leq 2, under the homogeneous Navier slip boundary condition. Furthermore, the gradient of the velocity is replaced by the, more physical, symmetric gradient. We prove W^{2, q} regularity, up to the boundary, under suitable assumptions on the couple p,q. The singular case μ= 0 is covered.
We consider a velocity tracking problem for the Navier-Stokes equations in a 2D-bounded domain. The control acts on the boundary through a injection-suction device and the flow is allowed to slip against the surface wall. We study the well-posedness of the state equations, linearized state equations and adjoint equations. In addition, we show the existence of an optimal solution and establish the first order optimality condition.
We consider an optimal control problem for the Navier-Stokes system with Navier slip boundary conditions. We denote by $α$ the friction coefficient and we analyze the asymptotic behavior of such a problem as $α\to \infty$. More precisely, we prove that if we take an optimal control for each $α$, then there exists a sequence of optimal controls converging to an optimal control of the same optimal control problem for the Navier-Stokes system with the Dirichlet boundary condition. We also show the convergence of the corresponding direct and adjoint states.
The original Leray's problem concerns the well-posedness of weak solutions to the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a distorted pipe, which approach to the Poiseuille flow subject to the no-slip boundary condition at spacial infinity. In this paper, the same problem with the Navier-slip boundary condition instead of the no-slip boundary condition, is addressed. Due to the complexity of the boundary condition, some new ideas, presented as follows, are introduced to handle the extra difficulties caused by boundary terms. First, the Poiseuille flow in the semi-infinite straight pip…
Strong solutions of the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations under non-linearized slip or leak boundary conditions are investigated. We show that the problems are formulated by a variational inequality of parabolic type, to which uniqueness is established. Using Galerkin's method and deriving a priori estimates, we prove global and local existence for 2D and 3D slip problems respectively. For leak problems, under no-leak assumption at $t=0$ we prove local existence in 2D and 3D cases. Compatibility conditions for initial states play a significant role in the estimates.
An initial boundary value problem for compressible Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is considered on an exterior domain (with the first Betti number vanishes) in $R^3$ in this paper. The global existence of smooth solutions near a given constant state for compressible MHD with the boundary conditions of Navier-slip for the velocity filed and perfect conduction for the magnetic field is established. Moreover the explicit decay rate is given. In particular, the results obtained in this paper also imply the global existence of classical solutions for the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with N…
In this paper, we investigate the uniform regularity for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system with general Navier-slip boundary conditions (1.6) and the inviscid limit to the compressible Euler system. It is shown that there exists a unique strong solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with general Navier-slip boundary conditions in an interval of time which is uniform in the vanishing viscosity limit. The solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and is uniform bounded in $W^{1,\infty}$. It is also shown that the boundary layer for the density is weak…
We study a generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system for an incompressible fluid where the deviatoric part of the Cauchy stress tensor is related to the symmetric part of the velocity gradient via a maximal monotone 2-graph that is continuously parametrized by the temperature. As such, the considered fluid may go through transitions between three of the following regimes: it can flow as a Bingham fluid for a specific value of the temperature, while it can behave as the Navier-Stokes fluid for another value of the temperature or, for yet another temperature, it can respond as the Euler…
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for the 3D nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition. We establish the local well-posedness of the strong solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing viscosity limit process is established and a strong rate of convergence is obtained as the boundary of the domain is flat. In addition, it is needed to add some additional condition for density to match well the boundary condition.
We prove a null controllability result for the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system, which describes the interaction of a large cloud of particles immersed in a fluid. We show that one can modify both the distribution of particles and the velocity field of the fluid from any initial state to the zero steady state, by means of an internal control. Indeed, we can modify the non-linear dynamics of the system in order to absorb the particles and let the fluid at rest. The proof is achieved thanks to the return method and a Leray-Schauder fixed-point argument.
We consider a system of partial differential equations describing the steady flow of a compressible heat conducting Newtonian fluid in a three-dimensional channel with inflow and outflow part. We show the existence of a strong solution provided the data are close to a constant, but nontrivial flow with sufficiently large dissipation in the energy equation.
We study a nonlinear, moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem between an incompressible, viscous Newtonian fluid, modeled by the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, and an elastic structure modeled by the shell or plate equations. The fluid and structure are coupled via the {\em Navier slip boundary condition} and balance of contact forces at the fluid-structure interface. The slip boundary condition is more realistic than the classical no-slip boundary condition in situations, e.g., when the structure is "rough", and in modeling dynamics near, or at a contact. Cardiovascular tissue and ce…
The existence of weak solutions to the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier slip-with-friction conditions in a 3D bounded domain has been recently proved by Gérard-Varet and Hillairet in \cite{exi:GeH}. In 2D for a fluid alone (without any rigid body) it is well-known since Leray that weak solutions are unique, continuous in time with $ L^{2} $ regularity in space and satisfy the energy equality. In this paper we prove that these properties also hold for the 2D "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system.
In this paper, we consider the stationary Stokes equations in an exterior domain three-dimensional under a slip boundary condition without friction. We set the problem in weighted Sobolev spaces in order to control the behavior at infinity of the solutions. In this work, we try to investigate the existence and uniqueness of the weak solutions related to this problem in $L^P-$theory when $p>3$. Our proof are based on obtaining inf-sup conditions that play a fundamental role.
In this paper, we investigate the incompressible steady Navier-Stokes system with Navier slip boundary condition in a two-dimensional channel. As long as the width of cross-section of the channel grows more slowly than the linear growth, the existence of solutions with arbitrary flux is established. Furthermore, if the flux is suitably small, the solution is unique even when the width of the channel is unbounded, and approaches to the shear flows at far field where the channels tend to be straight at far fields. One of the major difficulties for the analysis on flows with Navier boundary condi…
We consider the initial-boundary-value problem of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations subject to large and non-flat doping profile in 3D bounded domain with slip boundary condition and vacuum. The global well-posedness of classical solution is established with small initial energy but possibly large oscillations and vacuum. The steady state (except velocity) and the doping profile are allowed to be of large variation.
This paper concerns the global existence for classical solutions problem to the 3D Density-Dependent Viscosity barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes in $Ω$ with slip boundary condition, where $Ω$ is a simply connected bounded $C^{\infty}$ domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and its boundary only has a finite number of 2-dimensional connected components. By a series of a priori estimates, we show that the classical solution to the system exists globally in time under the assumption that the initial energy is suitably small. The initial density of such a classical solution is allowed to have large oscillat…
H.-O. Bae and H.J. Choe, in a 1997 paper, established a regularity criteria for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space $\R^3$ based on two velocity components. Recently, one of the present authors extended this result to the half-space case $\R^3_+\,.$ Further, this author in collaboration with J. Bemelmans and J. Brand extended the result to cylindrical domains under physical slip boundary conditions. In this note we obtain a similar result in the case of smooth arbitrary boundaries, but under a distinct, apparently very similar, slip boundary condition. They coincide j…
We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain with $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$ boundary, completed with slip boundary condition. Apart from studying the general semigroup theory related to the Stokes operator with Navier boundary condition where the slip coefficient $α$ is a non-smooth scalar function, our main goal is to obtain estimate on the solutions, independent of $α$. We show that for $α$ large, the weak and strong solutions of both the linear and non-linear system are bounded uniformly with respect to $α$. This justifies mathematically that the solution of the Navi…

This notes concern the sufficient conditions for regularity of solutions to the evolution Navier-Stokes equations known in the literature as Prodi-Serrin's condition. H.-O. Bae and H.-J. Choe proved in a 1999 paper that, in the whole space R^3, it is merely sufficient that two components of the velocity satisfy the above condition. Below, we extend the result to the half-space case R^n_+ under slip boundary conditions. We show that it is sufficient that the velocity component parallel to the boundary enjoys the above condition. Flat boundary geometry seems not essential, as suggested by some p…
In the Eulerian approach, the motion of an incompressible fluid is usually described by the velocity field which is given by the Navier--Stokes system. The velocity field generates a flow in the space of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. The latter plays a central role in the Lagrangian description of a fluid, since it allows to identify the trajectories of individual particles. In this paper, we show that the velocity field of the fluid and the corresponding flow of diffeomorphisms can be simultaneously approximately controlled using a finite-dimensional external force. The proof is based on…
In some problems of fluid mechanics, it is possible to be confronted with data that are not regular, that is why we are interested here in the search for the so-called very weak solutions for the stationary Stokes problem with Navier-type boundary conditions in a three-dimensional exterior domain. The problem describes the flow of a viscous and incompressible fluid past an obstacle where we assume that the fluid may slip on the boundary of the obstacle. Because the flow domain is unbounded, we set the problem in weighted Sobolev spaces in order to control the behavior at infinity of the soluti…
In this article, we study the control aspects of the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with Maxwell's law linearized around a constant steady state with zero velocity. We consider the linearized system with Dirichlet boundary conditions and with interior controls. We prove that the system is not null controllable at any time using localized controls in density and stress equations and even everywhere control in the velocity equation. However, we show that the system is null controllable at any time if the control acting in the density or stress equation is everywhere in the …
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system on time-dependent domains with prescribed motion of the boundary, supplemented with slip boundary conditions for the velocity. Assuming that the pressure can be decomposed into an elastic part and a thermal part, we prove global-in-time existence of weak solutions. Our approach is based on the penalization of the boundary behavior, viscosity, and the pressure in the weak formulation. Moreover, the thermal energy equation is in the weak formulation replaced by the thermal energy inequality complemented with the global total energy inequa…
