We present the results of our spectroscopic monitoring campaign of $ζ$ Oph, carried out at the University observatory Jena with the spectrograph FLECHAS between July 2015 and September 2016. The main aim of the project is to determine the radial velocity of the star precisely, as a wide range of radial velocity measurements of $ζ$ Oph are given in the literature. Beside the proper motion and parallax, the radial velocity is an important input parameter for the calculation of the space motion of the star. $ζ$ Oph is considered to be a runaway star and potential former companion of the progenitor star of the pulsar PSRJ1932+1059, which both may have been located in a binary system and were then released during a supernova explosion about 1 Myr ago in the Upper Scorpius OB association. For the calculation that the pulsar and $ζ$ Oph could have been at the same place, a radial velocity of $-$9.0 km/s for $ζ$ Oph was used in the literature. By analysing the hydrogen and helium lines in 48 FLECHAS spectra, we determined the radial velocity of $ζ$ Oph to be 12.2$\pm$3.3 km/s and the projected rotational velocity to 432$\pm$16 km/s with no indication for variability.
We present results of a {\bf comprehensive} asteroseismic modelling of the $β$ Cephei variable $θ$ Ophiuchi. {\bf We call these studies {\it complex asteroseismology} because our goal is to reproduce both pulsational frequencies as well as corresponding values of a complex, nonadiabatic parameter, $f$, defined by the radiative flux perturbation.} To this end, we apply the method of simultaneous determination of the spherical harmonic degree, $\ell$, of excited pulsational mode and the corresponding nonadiabatic $f$ parameter from combined multicolour photometry and radial velocity data. Using …
Despite a century of remarkable progress in understanding stellar interiors, we know surprisingly little about the inner workings of stars spinning near their critical limit. New interferometric imaging of these so-called ``rapid rotators'' combined with breakthroughs in asteroseismology promise to lift this veil and probe the strongly latitude-dependent photospheric characteristics and even reveal the internal angular momentum distribution of these luminous objects. Here, we report the first high precision photometry on the low-amplitude delta cuti variable star Rasalhague (alpha Oph, A5IV, 2…
High-resolution optical spectra of the R Coronae Borealis (RCB) star V532 Oph at light maximum are discussed. The absolute visual magnitude M_V of the star is found to be -4.9 \pm 0.5. The elemental abundances suggest the star belongs to the majority class of RCB stars but is among the most O-poor of this class with mild enhancements of heavy elements Y, Zr, Ba and La. The C_2 Swan bands are weak in V532 Oph relative to R CrB. Other aspects of the high-resolution spectrum confirm that V532 Oph is representative of majority RCBs, i.e., the radial velocity is variable, circumstellar material is …
We present radial-velocity (RV) measurements for the K giant $ν$ Oph (= HIP88048, HD163917, HR6698), which reveal two brown dwarf companions with a period ratio close to 6:1. For our orbital analysis we use 150 precise RV measurements taken at Lick Observatory between 2000 and 2011, and we combine them with RV data for this star available in the literature. Using a stellar mass of $M = 2.7\,M_\odot$ for $ν$ Oph and applying a self-consistent N-body model we estimate the minimum dynamical companion masses to be $m_1\sin i \approx 22.2\,M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ and $m_2\sin i \approx 24.7\,M_{\mathrm{J…
We use a time-dependent hydrodynamic code and a non-LTE Monte Carlo code to model disk dissipation for the Be star 66 Ophiuchi. We compiled 63 years of observations from 1957 to 2020 to encompass the complete history of the growth and subsequent dissipation of the star's disk. Our models are constrained by new and archival photometry, spectroscopy and polarization observations, allowing us to model the disk dissipation event. Using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, we find 66 Oph is consistent with standard B2Ve stellar properties. We computed a grid of 61568 Be star disk models to constrain t…
Rotational and radial velocities have been measured for 1589 evolved stars of spectral types F, G and K and luminosity classes IV, III, II and Ib, based on observations carried out with the CORAVEL spectrometers. The precision in radial velocity is better than 0.30 km/s per observation, whereas rotational velocity uncertainties are typically 1.0 km/s for subgiants and giants and 2.0 km/s for class II giants and Ib supergiants.
Pulsation modelling of the Cepheid Y Ophiuchi with RSP/MESA. Impact of the circumstellar envelope and a high projection factor on Baade-Wesselink method
Spatial correlations among proto-planetary disk orientations carry unique information on physics of multiple star formation processes. We select five nearby star-forming regions that comprise a number of proto-planetary disks with spatially-resolved images with ALMA and HST, and search for the mutual alignment of the disk axes. Specifically, we apply the Kuiper test to examine the statistical uniformity of the position angle (PA: the angle of the major axis of the projected disk ellipse measured counter-clockwise from the north) distribution. The disks located in the star-forming regions, exce…
We discuss low-frequency g modes excited by resonant couplings with weakly unstable oscillatory convective modes in the rotating convective core in early-type main-sequence stars. Our non-adiabatic pulsation analyses including the effect of Coriolis force for $2\,M_\odot$ main-sequence models show that if the convective core rotates slightly faster than the surrounding radiative layers, g modes in the radiative envelope are excited by a resonance coupling. The frequency of the excited g mode in the inertial frame is close to $|mΩ_{\rm c}|$ with $m$ and $Ω_{\rm c}$ being the azimuthal order of …
This study presents the rotational distribution of red giant stars (RGs) in eleven old to intermediate age open clusters. The masses of these stars are all above the Kraft break, so that they lose negligible amounts of their birth angular momentum (AM) during the main sequence evolution. However, they do span a mass range with quite different AM distributions imparted during formation, with the stars less massive than ~1.6 M_Sun arriving on the main sequence with lower rotation rates than the more massive stars. The majority of RGs in this study are slow rotators across the entire red giant br…
The 76 frequencies determined from Kepler measurements of the A-type star KIC 9700322 can be understood in a rather simple way as the radial fundamental and first overtone radial modes, a nonradial \ell = 2 quintuplet, stellar rotation and combinations of all of these. Two low-frequency peaks are found: f=0.160 c/d and a 2f peak. We show from a variety of arguments that the low-frequency peak, f, (rather than the 2f peak) is the rotational frequency. The corresponding prediction of slow rotation is confirmed by a spectrum from which v sin i = 19 \pm 1 km/s is obtained. During rotation, the bri…
Future generations of precise radial velocity (RV) surveys aim to achieve sensitivity sufficient to detect Earth mass planets orbiting in their stars' habitable zones. A major obstacle to this goal is astrophysical radial velocity noise caused by active areas moving across the stellar limb as a star rotates. In this paper, we quantify how stellar activity impacts exoplanet detection with radial velocities as a function of orbital and stellar rotational periods. We perform data-driven simulations of how stellar rotation affects planet detectability and compile and present relations for the typi…
Asteroseismology offers the prospect of constraining differential rotation in Sun-like stars. Here we have identified six high signal-to-noise main-sequence Sun-like stars in the Kepler field, which all have visible signs of rotational splitting of their p-mode frequencies. For each star, we extract the rotational frequency splitting and inclination angle from separate mode sets (adjacent modes with l=2, 0, and 1) spanning the p-mode envelope. We use a Markov chain Monte Carlo method to obtain the best fit and errors associated with each parameter. We are able to make independent measurements …
Helioseismology revealed an increase in the rotation rate with depth just beneath the solar surface. The relative magnitude of the radial shear is almost constant with latitude. This rotational state can be interpreted as a consequence of two conditions characteristic of the near-surface convection: the smallness of convective turnover time in comparison with the rotation period and absence of a horizontal preferred direction of convection anisotropy. The latter condition is violated in the presence of a magnetic field. This raises the question of whether the subphotospheric fields can be prob…
In this Letter, the radial velocity variability of the chemically peculiar star Epsilon Ursae Majoris ($ε$ UMa) from the sharp cores of the hydrogen lines is investigated. This study is based on the ELODIE archival data obtained at different phases of the rotational cycle. The star exhibits low-amplitude radial velocity variations with a period of P=5.0887 d. The best Keplerian solution yields an eccentricity e=0.503 and a minimum mass ~14.7$M_{\rm Jup}$ on the hypothesis that the rotational axis of $ε$ UMa is perpendicular to the orbital plane. This result indicate that the companion is the b…

We search for periodic variations in the radial velocity of the young Herbig star HD 135344B with the aim to determine a rotation period. We analyzed 44 high-resolution optical spectra taken over a time range of 151 days. The spectra were acquired with FEROS at the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope in La Silla. The stellar parameters of HD 135344B are determined by fitting synthetic spectra to the stellar spectrum. In order to obtain radial velocity measurements, the stellar spectra have been cross-correlated with a theoretical template computed from determined stellar parameters. We report the first dir…
We present spectral classifications for 438 B-type stars observed as part of the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS) in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Radial velocities are provided for 307 apparently single stars, and for 99 targets with radial-velocity variations which are consistent with them being spectroscopic binaries. We investigate the spatial distribution of the radial velocities across the 30 Dor region, and use the results to identify candidate runaway stars. Excluding potential runaways and members of two older clusters in the survey region (SL 639 and Hodge 30…
Using the WKB approximation we perform a linear stability analysis for a rotational flow of a viscous and electrically conducting fluid in an external azimuthal magnetic field that has an arbitrary radial profile B_{phi}(R). In the inductionless approximation, we find the growth rate of the three-dimensional perturbation in a closed form and demonstrate in particular that it can be positive when the velocity profile is Keplerian and the magnetic field profile is slightly shallower than R^{-1}.
We report on new radial velocity measurements of massive stars that are either suspected binaries or lacking prior observations. This is part of a survey to identify and characterize spectroscopic binaries among O-type stars with the goal of comparing the binary fraction of field and runaway stars with those in clusters and associations. We present orbits for HDE 308813, HD 152147, HD 164536, BD-16 4826 and HDE 229232, Galactic O-type stars exhibiting single-lined spectroscopic variation. By fitting model spectra to our observed spectra we obtain estimates for effective temperature, surface gr…
Since solar-like oscillations were first detected in red-giant stars, the presence of non-radial oscillation modes has been debated. Spectroscopic line-profile analysis was used in the first attempt to perform mode identification, which revealed that non-radial modes are observable. Despite the fact that the presence of non-radial modes could be confirmed, the degree or azimuthal order could not be uniquely identified. Here we present an improvement to this first spectroscopic line-profile analysis. Aims: We aim to study line-profile variations of stochastically excited solar-like oscillations…
Rotational shear in Sun-like stars is thought to be an important ingredient in models of stellar dynamos. Thanks to helioseismology, rotation in the Sun is characterized well, but the interior rotation profiles of other Sun-like stars are not so well constrained. Until recently, measurements of rotation in Sun-like stars have focused on the mean rotation, but little progress has been made on measuring or even placing limits on differential rotation. Using asteroseismic measurements of rotation we aim to constrain the radial shear in five Sun-like stars observed by the NASA Kepler mission: KIC0…
Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) accrete material from their discs through their magnetospheres. The geometry of the accretion flow strongly depends on the magnetic obliquity, i.e., the angle between the rotational and magnetic axes. We aim at deriving the distribution of magnetic obliquities in a sample of 10 CTTSs. For this, we monitored the radial velocity variations of the HeI$λ$5876 line in these stars' spectra along their rotational cycle. HeI is produced in the accretion shock, close to the magnetic pole. When the magnetic and rotational axes are not aligned, the radial velocity of this l…
According to the rotational splitting law of g modes, the frequency spectra of EE Cam can be disentangled only with oscillation modes of $\ell$ = 0, 1, and 2. Fifteen sets of rotational splits are found, containing five sets of $\ell=1$ multiplets and ten sets of $\ell=2$ multiplets. The rotational period of EE Cam is deduced to be $P_{\rm rot}$ = $1.84_{-0.05}^{+0.07}$ days. When we do model fittings, we use two nonradial oscillation modes ($f_{11}$ and $f_{32}$) and the fundamental radial mode $f_{1}$. The fitting results show that $χ^{2}$ of the best-fitting model is much smaller than those…
We report multi-epoch radial velocities, rotational velocities, and atmospheric parameters for 37 T-type brown dwarfs observed with Keck/NIRSPEC. Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo forward-modeling method, we achieve median precisions of 0.5 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.9 km s$^{-1}$ for radial and rotational velocities, respectively. All of the T dwarfs in our sample are thin disk brown dwarfs. We confirm previously reported moving group associations for four T dwarfs. However, the lack of spectral indicators of youth in two of these sources suggests that these are chance alignments. We confirm two previo…
We performed SMA observations in the C18O (2-1) emission line toward six Class 0 and I protostars, to study rotational motions of their surrounding envelopes and circumstellar material on 100 to 1000 AU scales. C18O (2-1) emission with intensity peaks located at the protostellar positions is detected toward all the six sources. The rotational velocities of the protostellar envelopes as a function of radius were measured from the Position-Velocity diagrams perpendicular to the outflow directions passing through the protostellar positions. Two Class 0 sources, B335 and NGC 1333 IRAS 4B, show no …
Aims: Projected rotational velocities (\vsini) have been estimated for 334 targets in the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula survey that do not manifest significant radial velocity variations and are not supergiants. They have spectral types from approximately O9.5 to B3. The estimates have been analysed to infer the underlying rotational velocity distribution, which is critical for understanding the evolution of massive stars. Methods: Projected rotational velocities were deduced from the Fourier transforms of spectral lines, with upper limits also being obtained from profile fitting. For the narrower line…
Small levels of turbulence can be present in stellar radiative interiors due to, e.g., instability of rotational shear. In this paper we estimate turbulent transport coefficients for stably stratified rotating stellar radiation zones. Stable stratification induces strong anisotropy with a very small ratio of radial-to-horizontal turbulence intensities. Angular momentum is transported mainly due to the correlation between azimuthal and radial turbulent motions induced by the Coriolis force. This non-diffusive transport known as the Lambda-effect has outward direction in radius and is much more …
We quantify the effect of observational spectroscopic and asteroseismic uncertainties on regularised least squares (RLS) inversions for the radial differential rotation of Sun-like and subgiant stars. We first solved the forward problem to model rotational splittings plus the observed uncertainties for models of a Sun-like star, HD 52265, and a subgiant star, KIC 7341231. We randomly perturbed the parameters of the stellar models within the uncertainties of the spectroscopic and asteroseismic constraints and used these perturbed stellar models to compute rotational splittings. We experimented …
We analyze the photometric and spectroscopic variability of the classical T Tauri star V2129 Oph over several rotational cycles to test the dynamical predictions of magnetospheric accretion models. The photometric variability and the radial velocity variations in the photospheric lines can be explained by rotational modulation due to cold spots, while the radial velocity variations of the He I (5876 Å) line and the veiling variability are due to hot spot rotational modulation. The hot and cold spots are located at high latitudes and about the same phase, but the hot spot is expected to sit at …
PSO J318.5338$-$22.8603 is an extremely-red planetary-mass object that has been identified as a candidate member of the $β$ Pictoris moving group based on its spatial position and tangential velocity. We present a high resolution $K$-band spectrum of PSO J318.5338$-$22.8603. Using a forward-modeling Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach, we report the first measurement of the radial velocity and $v$ sin($i$) of PSO J318.5$-$22, $-$6.0$^{+0.8}_{-1.1}$ km s$^{-1}$ and 17.5$^{+2.3}_{-2.8}$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. We calculate the space velocity and position of PSO J318.5$-$22 and confirm that it i…
WIYN/Hydra spectra (R $\sim$ 13,500, signal-to-noise pixel$^{-1}$ = 50-1000) of a 400 $\unicode{x212B}$ region around Li 6708 $\unicode{x212B}$ are used to determine radial and rotational velocities for 287 photometrically selected candidate members of the open cluster M48. The sample ranges from turnoff A stars to late-K dwarfs and eight giants. We combine our $V_{\rm{RAD}}$ measurements and power spectrum analysis with parallax and proper motion data from Gaia DR2 to evaluate membership and multiplicity. We classify 152 stars as single cluster members, 11 as binary members, 16 as members of …
Bright Be star beta CMi has been identified as a non-radial pulsator on the basis of space photometry with the MOST satellite and also as a single-line spectroscopic binary with a period of 170.4 d. The purpose of this study is to re-examine both these findings, using numerous electronic spectra from the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, Ondřejov Observatory, Universitätssterwarte Bochum, archival electronic spectra from several observatories, and also the original MOST satellite photometry. We measured the radial velocity of the outer wings of the double Halpha emission in all spectra at ou…
The internal angular momentum distribution of a star is key to determine its evolution. Fortunately, the stellar internal rotation can be probed through studies of rotationally-split non-radial oscillation modes. In particular, detection of non-radial gravity modes (g modes) in massive young stars has become feasible recently thanks to the Kepler space mission. Our aim is to derive the internal rotation profile of the Kepler B8V star KIC 10526294 through asteroseismology. We interpret the observed rotational splittings of its dipole g modes using four different approaches based on the best sei…

Based on high-resolution spectra obtained with PHOENIX at Gemini-South, CRIRES at VLT-UT1, and ESPaDOnS at CFHT, we present new measurements of the radial and projected rotational velocities of 219 low-mass stars. The target likely membership was initially established using the Bayesian analysis tool recently presented in \citet{2013malo}, taking into account only the position, proper motion and photometry of the stars to assess their membership probability. In the present study, we include radial velocity as an additional input to our analysis, and in doing so we confirm the high membership p…
Context : We still do not know which mechanisms are responsible for the transport of angular momentum inside stars. The recent detection of mixed modes that contain the signature of rotation in the spectra of Kepler subgiants and red giants gives us the opportunity to make progress on this issue. Aims: Our aim is to probe the radial dependance of the rotation profiles for a sample of Kepler targets. For this purpose, subgiants and early red giants are particularly interesting targets because their rotational splittings are more sensitive to the rotation outside the deeper core than is the case…
We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the eclipsing, short period cataclysmic variable CTCV J1300-3052. Using absorption features from the secondary star, we determine the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the secondary star to be K2 = 378 \pm 6 km/s, and its projected rotational velocity to be v sin i = 125 \pm 7 km/s. Using these parameters and Monte Carlo techniques, we obtain masses of M1 = 0.79 \pm 0.05 MSun for the white dwarf primary and M2 = 0.198 \pm 0.029 MSun for the M-type secondary star. These parameters are found to be in excellent agreement with previous mass determinations f…
We present the results of a 140 ks XMM-Newton observation of the B2 star $ρ$ Ophiuchi A. The star has exhibited strong X-ray variability: a cusp-shaped increase of rate, similar to that which we partially observed in 2013, and a bright flare. These events are separated in time by about 104 ks, which likely corresponds to the rotational period of the star (1.2 days). Time resolved spectroscopy of the X-ray spectra shows that the first event is caused by an increase of the plasma emission measure, while the second increase of rate is a major flare with temperatures in excess of 60 MK ($kT\sim5$ …
Different stellar phenomena affect radial velocities (RVs), causing variations large enough to make it difficult to identify planet signals from the stellar variability. RV variations caused by stellar oscillations and granulation can be reduced through some methods, but the impact of rotationally modulated magnetic activity on RV, due to stellar active regions is harder to correct. New instrumentation promises an improvement in precision of one order of magnitude, from about 1 m/s, to about 10 cm/s. In this context, we report our first results from 24 spectroscopic ESPRESSO/VLT observations o…
The detection of mixed modes that are split by rotation in Kepler red giants has made it possible to probe the internal rotation profiles of these stars, which brings new constraints on the transport of angular momentum in stars. Mosser et al. (2012) have measured the rotation rates in the central regions of intermediate-mass core helium burning stars (secondary clump stars). Our aim was to exploit& the rotational splittings of mixed modes to estimate the amount of radial differential rotation in the interior of secondary clump stars using Kepler data, in order to place constraints on angular …
The Carina Nebula is an active star forming region in the southern sky that is of particular interest due to the presence of a large number of massive stars in a wide array of evolutionary stages. Here we present the results of the spectroscopic analysis of 82 B-type stars and 33 O-type stars that were observed in 2013 and 2014. For 82 B-type stars without line blending, we fit model spectra from the Tlusty BSTAR2006 grid to the observed profiles of Hγ and He λλ 4026, 4388, and 4471 to measure the effective temperatures, surface gravities, and projected rotational velocities. We also measure t…
We present a new method for the detection of double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2) using $v\sin{i}$ values from spectral fits. The method is tested on synthetic and real spectra from LAMOST-MRS. It can reliably detect SB2 candidates for double-lined binaries with $v\sin{i}_1+v\sin{i}_2<300\,km\,s^{-1}$ if the radial velocity separation is large enough. Using this method, we detect 2460 SB2 candidates, 1410 of which are new discoveries. We confirm the correlation between the radial velocity separation estimated by the binary model and $v\sin{i}_0$ estimated by the single star model using th…
Context: Chromospheric activity produces both photometric and spectroscopic variations that can be mistaken as planets. Large spots crossing the stellar disc can produce planet-like periodic variations in the light curve of a star. These spots clearly affect the spectral line profiles and their perturbations alter the line centroids creating a radial velocity jitter that might contaminate" the variations induced by a planet. Precise chromospheric activity measurements are needed to estimate the activity-induced noise that should be expected for a given star. Aims: We obtain precise chromospher…
Context. Radial velocity (RV) measurements induced by the presence of planets around late-type stars are contaminated by stellar signals that are of the order of a few meters per second in amplitude, even for the quietest stars. Those signals are induced by acoustic oscillations, convective granulation patterns, active regions co-rotating with the stellar surface, and magnetic activity cycles. Aims. This study investigates the properties of all coherent stellar signals seen on the Sun on timescales up to its sidereal rotational period. By combining HARPS and HARPS-N solar data spanning several…
The evolutionary status of Be-type stars remains unclear, with both single-star and binary pathways having been proposed. Here, VFTS spectroscopy of 73 Be-type stars, in the spectral-type range, B0--B3, is analysed to estimate projected rotational velocities, radial velocities and stellar parameters. They are found to be rotating faster than the corresponding VFTS B-type sample but simulations imply that their projected rotational velocities are inconsistent with them all rotating at near critical velocities. The de-convolution of the projected rotational velocities estimates leads to a mean r…
