Since solar-like oscillations were first detected in red-giant stars, the presence of non-radial oscillation modes has been debated. Spectroscopic line-profile analysis was used in the first attempt to perform mode identification, which revealed that non-radial modes are observable. Despite the fact that the presence of non-radial modes could be confirmed, the degree or azimuthal order could not be uniquely identified. Here we present an improvement to this first spectroscopic line-profile analysis. Aims: We aim to study line-profile variations of stochastically excited solar-like oscillations in four evolved stars to derive the azimuthal order of the observed mode and the surface rotational frequency. Methods: Spectroscopic line-profile analysis is applied to cross-correlation functions, using the Fourier Parameter Fit method on the amplitude and phase distributions across the profiles. Results: For four evolved stars, beta Hydri (G2IV), epsilon Ophiuchi (G9.5III), eta Serpentis (K0III) and delta Eridani (K0IV) the line-profile variations reveal the azimuthal order of the oscillations with an accuracy of ~1. Furthermore, our analysis reveals the projected rotational velocity and the inclination angle. From these parameters we obtain the surface rotational frequency. Conclusions: We conclude that line-profile variations of cross-correlation functions behave differently for different frequencies and that they provide additional information in terms of the surface rotational frequency and azimuthal order.
HD49330 is a Be star that underwent an outburst during its five-month observation with the CoRoT satellite. An analysis of its light curve revealed several independent p and g pulsation modes, in addition to showing that the amplitude of the modes is directly correlated with the outburst. We modelled the results obtained with CoRoT. We modelled the flattening of the structure of the star due to rapid rotation in two ways: Chandrasekhar-Milne's expansion and 2D structure computed with ROTORC. We then modelled kappa-driven pulsations. We also adapted the formalism of the excitation and amplitude…
Recent photometric observations of massive stars show ubiquitous low-frequency "red-noise" variability, which has been interpreted as internal gravity waves (IGWs). Simulations of IGWs generated by convection show smooth surface wave spectra, qualitatively matching the observed red-noise. On the other hand, theoretical calculations by Shiode et al (2013) and Lecoanet et al (2019) predict IGWs should manifest at the surface as regularly-spaced peaks associated with standing g-modes. In this work, we compare these theoretical approaches to simplified 2D numerical simulations. The simulations sho…
We present the characterization of KIC 4142768, an eclipsing binary with two evolved A-type stars in an eccentric orbit with a period of 14 days. We measure the fundamental parameters of the two components ($M_1=2.05M_{\odot}, R_1=2.96R_{\odot}$ and $M_2=2.05M_{\odot}, R_2=2.51R_{\odot}$) by combining {\it Kepler} photometry and spectra from {\it Keck} HIRES. The measured surface rotation rates are only one-fifth of the pseudo-synchronous rate of the eccentric orbit. Fourier spectrum of the light curve reveals hybrid pulsations of $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus type, with pulsation frequencies at a…
All evolved stars with masses $M_\star\lesssim 2M_\odot$ undergo a helium(He)-core flash at the end of their first stage as a giant star. Although theoretically predicted more than 50 years ago, this core-flash phase has yet to be observationally probed. We show here that gravity modes (g modes) stochastically excited by He-flash driven convection are able to reach the stellar surface, and induce periodic photometric variabilities in hot-subdwarf stars with amplitudes of the order of a few mmag. As such they can now be detected by space-based photometry with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Sat…
There are no strong constraints placed thus far on the amplitude of internal gravity waves (IGWs) that are stochastically excited in the radiative interiors of solar-type stars. Late F-type stars have relatively thin convective envelopes with fast convective flows and tend to be fast rotators compared to solar-type stars of later spectral types. These two elements are expected to directly impact the IGW excitation rates and properties. We want to estimate the amplitude of stochastically excited gravity modes (g-modes) in F-type stars for different rotational regimes. We used the ASH code to pe…
If appropriately excited, a star will oscillate like a giant spherical instrument. In most stars, including the Sun, surface convection provides the excitation mechanism (Goldreich and Keeley, 1977). With turbulent velocities reaching speeds comparable to the local sound speed near the surface of the star, the vigorous convective motions can excite standing acoustic waves. These are known as pressure or p modes because the restoring force arises from the pressure gradient. The broad frequency spectrum of this excitation mechanism gives rise to many oscillation modes, both radial and non-radial…

Context. HCN is a major constituent of the circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich evolved stars, and rotational lines from within its vibrationally excited states probe parts of these regions closest to the stellar surface. A number of such lines are known to show maser action. Historically, in one of them, the 177 GHz $J=2\rightarrow1$ line in the $l$-doubled bending mode has been found to show relatively strong maser action, with results only published for a single object, the archetypical high-mass loss asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star IRC+10216. Aims. To examine how common 177 GHz HCN ma…
Probing the mass-loss history of AGB and red supergiant stars from CO rotational line profiles - II. CO line survey of evolved stars: derivation of mass-loss rate formulae
Asteroseismic studies of red giants generally assume that the oscillation modes can be treated as linear perturbations to the background star. However, observations by the Kepler mission show that the oscillation amplitudes increase dramatically as stars ascend the red giant branch. The importance of nonlinear effects should therefore be assessed. In previous work, we found that mixed modes in red giants are unstable to nonlinear three-wave interactions over a broad range of stellar mass and evolutionary state. Here we solve the amplitude equations that describe the mode dynamics for large net…
All cool stars with outer convective zones have the potential to exhibit stochastically excited stellar oscillations. In this work, we explore the outer layers of stars less massive than the Sun. In particular, we have computed a set of stellar models raging from 0.4 to 0.9 $M_\odot$ with the aim at determining the impact on stellar oscillations of two physical processes occurring in the envelopes of these stars. Namely, the partial ionisation of chemical elements and the electrostatic interactions between particles in the outer layers. We find that alongside with partial ionisation, Coulomb e…
The Very Fast Evolution of the VLTP Object V4334 Sgr
Cool main-sequence, sub-giant and red-giant stars all show solar-like oscillations, pulsations that are excited and intrinsically damped by near-surface convection. Many overtones are typically excited to observable amplitudes, giving a rich spectrum of detectable modes. These modes provide a wealth of information on fundamental stellar properties. However, the radial velocity shifts induced by these oscillations can also be problematic when searching for low-mass, long-period planets; this is because their amplitudes are large enough to completely mask such minute planetary signals. Here we s…
