We consider the class $\mathcal{R}$ of finitely generated toral relatively hyperbolic groups. We show that groups from $\mathcal{R}$ are commutative transitive and generalize a theorem proved by Benjamin Baumslag to this class. We also discuss two definitions of (fully) residually-$\mathcal{C}$ groups and prove the equivalence of the two definitions for $\mathcal{C}=\mathcal{R}$. This is a generalization of the similar result obtained by Ol'shanskii for $\mathcal{C}$ being the class of torsion-free hyperbolic groups. Let $Γ\in\mathcal{R}$ be non-abelian and non-elementary. We prove that every finitely generated fully residually-$Γ$ group embeds into a group from $\mathcal{R}$. On the other hand, we give an example of a finitely generated torsion-free fully residually-$\mathcal{H}$ group that does not embed into a group from $\mathcal{R}$; $\mathcal{H}$ is the class of hyperbolic groups.
We prove that the isomorphism problem for finitely generated fully residually free groups is decidable. We also show that each finitely generated fully residually free group G has a decomposition that is invariant under automorphisms of G, and obtain a structure theorem for the group of outer automorphisms Out(G).
Using graph-theoretic techniques for f.g. subgroups of $F^{\mathbb{Z}[t]}$ we provide a criterion for a f.g. subgroup of a f.g. fully residually free group to be of finite index. Moreover, we show that this criterion can be checked effectively. Also we obtain an analogue of Greenberg-Stallings Theorem for f.g. fully residually free groups, and prove that a f.g. non-abelian subgroup of a f.g. fully residually free group is of finite index in its commensurator.
We show that the compressed word problem in a finitely-generated fully residually free group (F -group) is decidable in polynomial time, and use the result to show that the word problem in the automorphism group of such a group is decidable in polynomial time.
Let $G$ be a generalized Baumslag-Solitar group and $\mathcal{C}$ be a class of groups containing at least one non-unit group and closed under taking subgroups, extensions, and Cartesian products of the form $\prod_{y \in Y}X_{y}$, where $X, Y \in \mathcal{C}$ and $X_{y}$ is an isomorphic copy of $X$ for every $y \in Y$. We give a criterion for $G$ to be residually a $\mathcal{C}$-group provided $\mathcal{C}$ consists only of periodic groups. We also prove that $G$ is residually a torsion-free $\mathcal{C}$-group if $\mathcal{C}$ contains at least one non-periodic group and is closed under tak…
We study properties of automorphisms of graph products of groups. We show that graph product $Γ\mathcal{G}$ has non-trivial pointwise inner automorphisms if and only if some vertex group corresponding to a central vertex has non-trivial pointwise inner automorphisms. We use this result to study residual finiteness of $\mathop{Out}(Γ\mathcal{G})$. We show that if all vertex groups are finitely generated residually finite and the vertex groups corresponding to central vertices satisfy certain technical (yet natural) condition, then $\mathop{Out}(Γ\mathcal{G})$ is residually finite. Finally, we g…
Let $G$ be a residually finite group. To any decreasing sequence $\mathcal S = (H_n)_n $ of finite index subgroups of $G$ is associated a unitary representation $ρ_{\mathcal S}$ of $G$ in the Hilbert space $\bigoplus_{n=0}^{+\infty} \ell^2 (G/H_n) $. This paper investigates the following question: when does the representation $ρ_{\mathcal S} $ weakly contain the regular representation $λ$ of $G$?
Let $A$ be an Artin group. A partition $\mathcal{P}$ of the set of standard generators of $A$ is called admissible if, for all $X,Y \in \mathcal{P}$, $X \neq Y$, there is at most one pair $(s,t) \in X \times Y$ which has a relation. An admissible partition $\mathcal{P}$ determines a quotient Coxeter graph $Γ/\mathcal{P}$. We prove that, if $Γ/\mathcal{P}$ is either a forest or an even triangle free Coxeter graph and $A_X$ is residually finite for all $X \in \mathcal{P}$, then $A$ is residually finite.
This paper represents notes of the mini-courses given by the authors at the GCGTA conference in Dortmund (2007), Ottawa-Saint Sauveur conference (2007), Escola d'Algebra in Rio de Janeiro (2008) and Alagna (Italy, 2008) conference on equations in groups. We explain here the Elimination process for solving equations in a free group which has Makanin-Razborov process as a prototype. We also explain how we use this process to obtain the structure theorem for finitely generated fully residually free groups and many other results.
We describe the fully residually F; or limit groups relative to F; (where F is a free group) that arise from systems of equations in two variables over F that have coefficients in F.
For any torsion-free hyperbolic group $Γ$ and any group $G$ that is fully residually $Γ$, we construct algorithmically a finite collection of homomorphisms from $G$ to groups obtained from $Γ$ by extensions of centralizers, at least one of which is injective. When $G$ is residually $Γ$, this gives a effective embedding of $G$ into a direct product of such groups. We also give an algorithmic construction of a diagram encoding the set of homomorphisms from a given finitely presented group to $Γ$.
Let $\mathcal M (Σ, \mathcal P)$ be the mapping class group of a punctured oriented surface $(Σ, \mathcal P)$ (where $\mathcal P$ may be empty), and let $\mathcal T_p(Σ,\mathcal P)$ be the kernel of the action of $\mathcal M (Σ, \mathcal P)$ on $H_1 (Σ\setminus \mathcal P, \mathbb F_p)$. We prove that $\mathcal T_p(Σ, \mathcal P)$ is residually $p$. In particular, this shows that $\mathcal M (Σ, \mathcal P)$ is virtually residually $p$. For a group $G$ we denote by $\mathcal I_p(G)$ the kernel of the natural action of ${\rm Out} (G)$ on $H_1(G, \mathbb F_p)$. In order to achieve our theorem, w…
In [BB] Benjamin Baumslag proved that being fully residually free is equivalent to being residually free and commutative transitive (CT). Gaglione and Spellman [GS] and Remeslennikov [Re] showed that this is also equivalent to being universally free, that is, having the same universal theory as the class of nonabelian free groups. This result is one of the cornerstones of the proof of the Tarksi problems. In this paper we extend the class of groups for which Benjamin Baumslag's theorem is true, that is we consider classes of groups $\X$ for which being fully residually $\X$ is equivalent to be…
We give a topological framework for the study of Sela's limit groups: limit groups are limits of free groups in a compact space of marked groups. Many results get a natural interpretation in this setting. The class of limit groups is known to coincide with the class of finitely generated fully residually free groups. The topological approach gives some new insight on the relation between fully residually free groups, the universal theory of free groups, ultraproducts and non-standard free groups.
We show that in the class of partially commutative groups, the conditions of being Howson, being fully residually free, and being free product of free-abelian groups, are equivalent.
Let R be a class of groups closed under taking semidirect products with finite kernel and fully residually R-groups. We prove that R contains all R-by-{finitely generated residually finite} groups. It follows that a semidirect product of a finitely generated residually finite group with a surjunctive group is surjunctive. This remained unknown even for direct products of a surjunctive group with the integers Z.
Suppose that $G$ is a group, $H$ and $K$ are proper isomorphic central subgroups of $G$, and $\mathfrak{G}$ is an HNN-extension of $G$ with the associated subgroups $H$ and $K$. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for $\mathfrak{G}$ to be residually a $\mathcal{C}$-group, where $\mathcal{C}$ is a class of groups closed under taking subgroups, extensions, homomorphic images, and Cartesian products of the form $\prod_{y \in Y}X_{y}$, where $X, Y \in \mathcal{C}$ and $X_{y}$ is an isomorphic copy of $X$ for each $y \in Y$.
We discuss dense embeddings of surface groups and fully residually free groups in topological groups. We show that a compact topological group contains a nonabelian dense free group of finite rank if and only if it contains a dense surface group. Also, we obtain a characterization of those Lie groups which admit a dense faithfully embedded surface group. Similarly, we show that any connected semisimple Lie group contains a dense copy of any fully residually free group.
We give a description of $Hom(G,L)$, where $L$ is a limit group (fully residually free group). We construct a finite diagram of groups, Makanin-Razborov diagram, that gives a convinient representation of all such homomorphisms.
In this paper we describe an elimination process which is a deterministic rewriting procedure that on each elementary step transforms one system of equations over free groups into a finitely many new ones. Infinite branches of this process correspond to cyclic splittings of the coordinate group of the initial system of equations. This allows us to construct algorithmically Grushko's decompositions of finitely generated fully residually free groups and cyclic [abelian] JSJ decompositions of freely indecomposable finitely generated fully residually free groups. We apply these results to obtain a…
We introduce and investigate a class of profinite groups defined via extensions of centralizers analogous to the extensively studied class of finitely generated fully residually free groups, that is, limit groups (in the sense of Z. Sela). From the fact that the profinite completion of limit groups belong to this class, results on their group-theoretical structure and homological properties are obtained.
For any positive integer $n$, $\mathcal{A}_n$ is the class of all groups $G$ such that, for $0\leq i\leq n$, $H^i(\hat{G},A)\cong H^i(G,A)$ for every finite discrete $\hat{G}$-module $A$. We describe certain types of free products with amalgam and HNN extensions that are in some of the classes $\mathcal{A}_n$. In addition, we investigate the residually finite groups in the class $\mathcal{A}_2$.
We show that for every subset X of a closed surface M^2 and every basepoint x_0, the natural homomorphism from the fundamental group to the first shape homotopy group, is injective. In particular, if X is a proper compact subset of M^2, then pi_1(X,x_0) is isomorphic to a subgroup of the limit of an inverse sequence of finitely generated free groups; it is therefore locally free, fully residually free and residually finite.
A new class of groups $\mathcal{C}$, containing all coherent RAAGs and all toral relatively hyperbolic groups, is defined. It is shown that, for a group $G$ in the class $\mathcal{C}$, the $\mathbb{Z}[t]$-exponential group $G^{\mathbb{Z}[t]}$ may be constructed as an iterated centraliser extension. Using this fact, it is proved that $G^{\mathbb{Z}[t]}$ is fully residually $G$ (i.e. it has the same universal theory as $G$) and so its finitely generated subgroups are limit groups over $G$. If $\mathbb{G}$ is a coherent RAAG, then the converse also holds - any limit group over $\mathbb{G}$ embeds…
Let $H$ be a torsion-free $δ$-hyperbolic group with respect to a finite generating set $S$. Let $a_1,..., a_n$ and $a_{1*},..., a_{n*}$ be elements of $H$ such that $a_{i*}$ is conjugate to $a_i$ for each $i=1,..., n$. Then, there is a uniform conjugator if and only if $W(a_{1*},..., a_{n*})$ is conjugate to $W(a_1,..., a_n)$ for every word $W$ in $n$ variables and length up to a computable constant depending only on $δ$, $\sharp{S}$ and $\sum_{i=1}^n |a_i|$. As a corollary, we deduce that there exists a computable constant $\mathcal{C}=\mathcal{C}(δ, \sharp S)$ such that, for any endomorphism…
Let G be a torsion free discrete group and let \bar{Q} denote the field of algebraic numbers in C. We prove that \bar{Q}[G] fulfills the Atiyah conjecture if G lies in a certain class of groups D, which contains in particular all groups which are residually torsion free elementary amenable or which are residually free. This result implies that there are no non-trivial zero-divisors in C[G]. The statement relies on new approximation results for L2-Betti numbers over \bar{Q}[G], which are the core of the work done in this paper. Another set of results in the paper is concerned with certain numbe…
We study a function $\mathcal{L}_Γ$ which quantifies the LEF (local embeddability into finite groups) property for a finitely generated group $Γ$. We compute this "LEF growth" function in some examples, including certain wreath products. We compare LEF growth with the analogous quantitative version of residual finiteness, and exhibit a family of finitely generated residually finite groups which nevertheless admit many more local embeddings into finite groups than they do finite quotients. Along the way, we give a new proof that B.H. Neumann's continuous family of $2$-generated groups contains …
Let $G$ be a residually finite group. We give an explicit example in the discrete Heisenberg group that the Brown measure of multiplication operators $A \in \mathbb{Z}[G] \subseteq \mathcal{B}(\ell^2(G))$ in general can not be approximated using finite quotients $G/N$ of $G$. We show that in finitely generated abelian groups the Brown measure can be approximated using finite quotients.
Let G be a real semisimple Lie group with no compact factors and finite centre, and let $Λ$ be a lattice in G. Suppose that there exists a homomorphism from $Λ$ to the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group $A_Γ$ with infinite image. We give an upper bound to the real rank of G that is determined by the structure of cliques in $Γ$. An essential tool is the Andreadakis-Johnson filtration of the Torelli subgroup $\mathcal{T}}(A_Γ)$ of $Aut(A_Γ)$. We answer a question of Day relating to the abelianisation of $\mathcal{T}}(A_Γ)$, and show that $\mathcal{T}}(A_Γ)$ and its image in $…
Let F be an infinitely generated free group and R a fully invariant subgroup of F such that (a) R is contained in the commutator subgroup F' of F and (b) the quotient group F/R is residually torsion-free nilpotent. Then the automorphism group Aut(F/R') of the group F/R' is complete. In particular, the automorphism group of any infinitely generated free solvalbe group of derived length at least two is complete. This extends a result by Dyer and Formanek (1977) on finitely generated groups F_n/R' where F_n is a free group of finite rank n at least two and R a characteristic subgroup of F_n.
Let $G$ be a discrete group with property (T). It is a standard fact that, in a unitary representation of $G$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, almost invariant vectors are close to invariant vectors, in a quantitative way. We begin by showing that, if a unitary representation has some vector whose coefficient function is close to a coefficient function of some finite-dimensional unitary representation $σ$, then the vector is close to a sub-representation isomorphic to $σ$: this makes quantitative a result of P.S. Wang [Wa]. We use that to give a new proof of a result by D. Kerr, H. Li and M. …
In this paper we introduce a new class of non-amenable groups denoted by ${\bf NC}_1 \cap {\bf Quot}(\mathcal C_{rss})$ which give rise to $\textit{prime}$ von Neumann algebras. This means that for every $Γ\in {\bf NC}_1 \cap {\bf Quot}(\mathcal C_{rss})$ its group von Neumann algebra $L(Γ)$ cannot be decomposed as a tensor product of diffuse von Neumann algebras. We show ${\bf NC}_1 \cap {\bf Quot}(\mathcal C_{rss})$ is fairly large as it contains many examples of groups intensively studied in various areas of mathematics, notably: all infinite central quotients of pure surface braid groups; …
Suppose $\mathcal{E}$ is a normal subsystem of a saturated fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ over $S$. If $X\leq S$ is fully $\mathcal{F}$-normalized, then Aschbacher defined a normal subsystem $N_{\mathcal{E}}(X)$ of $N_{\mathcal{F}}(X)$. In this short note we revisit and generalize this result using the theory of localities. Our more general approach leads in particular to a normal subsystem $C_{\mathcal{E}}(X)$ of $C_{\mathcal{F}}(X)$ for every $X\leq S$ which is fully $\mathcal{F}$-centralized.
We provide a solution to the isomorphism problem for torsion-free relatively hyperbolic groups with abelian parabolics. As special cases we recover solutions to the isomorphism problem for: (i) torsion-free hyperbolic groups (Sela); and (ii) fully residually free groups (Bumagin, Kharlampovich and Miasnikov). We also give a solution to the homeomorphism problem for finite volume hyperbolic n-manifolds, for $n \ge 3$. In the course of the proof of the main result, we prove that a particular JSJ decomposition of a freely indecomposable torsion-free relatively hyperbolic group with abelian parabo…
Solvability of the conjugacy problem for relatively hyperbolic groups was announced by Gromov [Hyperbolic groups, MSRI publications 8 (1987)]. Using the definition of Farb of a relatively hyperbolic group in the strong sense [B Farb, Relatively hyperbolic groups, Geom. Func. Anal. 8 (1998) 810-840], we prove this assertion. We conclude that the conjugacy problem is solvable for fundamental groups of complete, finite-volume, negatively curved manifolds, and for finitely generated fully residually free groups.
Let $Σ_{g,p}$ be the genus--$g$ oriented surface with $p$ punctures, with either $g>0$ or $p>3$. We show that $MCG(Σ_{g,p})/DT$ is acylindrically hyperbolic where $DT$ is the normal subgroup of the mapping class group $MCG(Σ_{g,p})$ generated by $K^{th}$ powers of Dehn twists about curves in $Σ_{g,p}$ for suitable $K$. Moreover, we show that in low complexity $MCG(Σ_{g,p})/DT$ is in fact hyperbolic. In particular, for $3g-3+p\leq 2$, we show that the mapping class group $MCG(Σ_{g,p})$ is fully residually non-elementary hyperbolic and admits an affine isometric action with unbounded orbits on s…
