We consider the Weyl quantization on a flat non-standard symplectic vector space. We focus mainly on the properties of the Wigner functions defined therein. In particular we show that the sets of Wigner functions on distinct symplectic spaces are different but have non-empty intersections. This extends previous results to arbitrary dimension and arbitrary (constant) symplectic structure. As a by-product we introduce and prove several concepts and results on non-standard symplectic spaces which generalize those on the standard symplectic space, namely the symplectic spectrum, Williamson's theorem and Narcowich-Wigner spectra. We also show how Wigner functions on non-standard symplectic spaces behave under the action of an arbitrary linear coordinate transformation.
We show that the linear symplectic and anti-symplectic transformations form the maximal covariance group for both the Wigner transform and Weyl operators. The proof is based on a new result from symplectic geometry which characterizes symplectic and anti-symplectic matrices, and which allows us, in addition, to refine a classical result on the preservation of symplectic capacities of ellipsoids.
We prove that Wigner functions contain a symplectic connection. The latter covariantises the symplectic exterior derivative on phase space. We analyse the role played by this connection and introduce the notion of local symplectic covariance of quantum-mechanical states. This latter symmetry is at work in the Schroedinger equation on phase space.
We extend Hardy's uncertainty principle for a square integrable function and its Fourier transform to the multidimensional case using a symplectic diagonalization. We use this extension to show that Hardy's uncertainty principle is equivalent to a statement on the Wigner distribution of the function. We give a geometric interpretation of our results in terms of the notion of symplectic capacity of an ellipsoid. Furthermore, we show that Hardy's uncertainty principle is valid for a general Lagrangian frame of the phase space. Finally, we discuss an extension of Hardy's theorem for the Wigner di…
We find a relationship between the dynamics of the Gaussian wave packet and the dynamics of the corresponding Gaussian Wigner function from the Hamiltonian/symplectic point of view. The main result states that the momentum map corresponding to the natural action of the symplectic group on the Siegel upper half space yields the covariance matrix of the corresponding Gaussian Wigner function. This fact, combined with Kostant's coadjoint orbit covering theorem, establishes a symplectic/Poisson-geometric connection between the two dynamics. The Hamiltonian formulation naturally gives rise to corre…
We prove, using symplectic methods and The Wigner formalism, a refinement of a criterion due to Werner and Wolf for the separability of bipartite Gaussian mixed states in an arbitrary number of dimensions. We use our result to show that one can characterize separability by comparing these states with separable pure Gaussian states.
We study the covariance property of quadratic time-frequency distributions with respect to the action of the extended symplectic group. We show how covariance is related, and in fact in competition, with the possibility of damping the interferences which arise due to the quadratic nature of the distributions. We also show that the well known fully covariance property of the Wigner distribution in fact characterizes it (up to a constant factor) among the quadratic distributions $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\rightarrow C_{0}({ \mathbb{R}^{2n}})$. A similar characterization for the closely related Weyl …
We study the Wigner caustic on shell of a Lagrangian submanifold L of affine symplectic space. We present the physical motivation for studying singularities of the Wigner caustic on shell and present its mathematical definition in terms of a generating family. Because such a generating family is an odd deformation of an odd function, we study simple singularities in the category of odd functions and their odd versal deformations, applying these results to classify the singularities of the Wigner caustic on shell, interpreting these singularities in terms of the local geometry of L.
A mapping between operators on the Hilbert space of $N$-dimensional quantum system and the Wigner quasiprobability distributions defined on the symplectic flag manifold is discussed. The Wigner quasiprobability distribution is constructed as a dual pairing between the density matrix and the Stratonovich-Weyl kernel. It is shown that the moduli space of the Stratonovich-Weyl kernel is given by an intersection of the coadjoint orbit space of the $SU(N)$ group and a unit $(N-2)$-dimensional sphere. The general consideration is exemplified by a detailed description of the moduli space of 2, 3 and …
We propose a refinement of the Robertson-Schrodinger uncertainty principle (RSUP) using Wigner distributions. This new principle is stronger than the RSUP. In particular, and unlike the RSUP, which can be saturated by many phase space functions, the refined RSUP can be saturated by pure Gaussian Wigner functions only. Moreover, the new principle is technically as simple as the standard RSUP. In addition, it makes a direct connection with modern harmonic analysis, since it involves the Wigner transform and its symplectic Fourier transform, which is the radar ambiguity function. As a by-product …
In this work, we derive a discrete analog of the Wigner transform over the space $(\mathbb{C}^p)^{\otimes N}$ for any prime $p$ and any positive integer $N$. We show that the Wigner transform over this space can be constructed as the inverse Fourier transform of the standard Pauli matrices for $p=2$ or more generally of the Heisenberg-Weyl group elements for $p > 2$. We connect our work to a previous construction by Wootters of a discrete Wigner transform by showing that for all $p$, Wootters' construction corresponds to taking the inverse symplectic Fourier transform instead of the inverse Fo…
Generation of Wigner functions of Landau levels and determination of their symmetries and generic properties are achieved in the autonomous framework of deformation quantization. Transformation properties of diagonal Wigner functions under space inversion, time reversal and parity transformations are specified and their invariance under a four-parameter subgroup of symplectic transformations are established. A generating function for all Wigner functions is developed and this has been identified as the phase-space coherent state for Landau levels. Integrated forms of generating function are us…
We construct the quasi probability distribution $W(p,q)$ on even dimensional vector space with marginality and invariance under the transformation induced by projective representation of the group ${\rm Sp}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ whose elements correspond to linear canonical transformation. On even dimensional vector space, non-existence of such a quasi probability distribution whose arguments take physical values was shown in our previous paper(Phys.Rev.A{\bf 65} 032105(2002)). For this reason we study a quasi probability distribution $W(p,q)$ whose arguments $q$ and $p$ take not only $N$ physical va…
In this work we study symplectic unitary representations for the Galilei group. As a consequence a Non-Linear Schrödinger equation is derived in phase space. The formalism is based on the non-commutative structure of the star-product, and using the group theory approach as a guide a physically consistent theory is constructed in phase space. The state is described by a quasi-probability amplitude that is in association with the Wigner function. With these results, we solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in phase space and obtained the Wigner function for the system considered.
We study noncommutative generalizations of such notions of the classical symplectic geometry as degenerate Poisson structure, Poisson submanifold and quotient manifold, symplectic foliation and symplectic leaf for associative Poisson algebras. We consider these structures for the case of the endomorphism algebra of a vector bundle, and give the full description of the family of Poisson structures for this algebra.
Symplectic unitary representations for the Poincaré group are studied. The formalism is based on the noncommutative structure of the star-product, and using group theory approach as a guide, a consistent physical theory in phase space is constructed. The state of a quantum mechanics system is described by a quasi-probability amplitude that is in association with the Wigner function. As a result, the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations are derived in phase space. As an application, we study the Dirac equation with electromagnetic interaction in phase space.
Exploring the concept of the extended Galilei group $\mathcal{G}$, a representation for the symplectic quantum mechanics in the manifold of $\mathcal{G}$, written in the light-cone of a five-dimensional De Sitter space-time, is derived consistently with the method of the Wigner function. A Hilbert space is constructed endowed with a simplectic structure, studying unitary operators describing rotations and translations, whose generators satisfy the Lie algebra of $\mathcal {G}$. This representation gives rise to the Schrödinger (Klein-Gordon-like) equation for the wave functions in phase-space,…
The Wigner $3j$ symbols of the quantum angular momentum theory are related to the vector coupling or Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and to the Hahn and dual Hahn polynomials of the discrete orthogonal hyperspherical family, of use in discretization approximations. We point out the important role of the Regge symmetries for defining the screen where images of the coefficients are projected, and for discussing their asymptotic properties and semiclassical behavior. Recursion relationships are formulated as eigenvalue equations, and exploited both for computational purposes and for physical interpre…
By using help of algebraic operad theory, Leibniz algebra theory and symplectic-Poisson geometry are connected. We introduce the notion of cohomological vector field defined on nongraded symplectic plane. It will be proved that the cohomological vector fields induce the finite dimensional Leibniz algebras by the derived bracket construction. This proposition is a Leibniz analogue of the cohomological field theory in the category of Lie algebras. The basic properties of the cohomological fields will be studied, in particular, we discuss a factorization problem with the cohomological fields and …
In this paper, we construct a quantization functor, associating a complex vector space H(V) to a finite dimensional symplectic vector space V over a finite field of odd characteristic. As a result, we obtain a canonical model for the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(V). The main new technical result is a proof of a stronger form of the Stone-von Neumann property for the Heisenberg group. Our result answers, for the case of the Heisenberg group, a question of Kazhdan about the possible existence of a canonical vector space attached to a coadjoint orbit of a general unipotent group…
The tensor product of vector and arbitrary representations of the nonstandard q-deformation U'_q(so(n)) of the universal enveloping algebra U(so(n)) of Lie algebra so(n) is defined. The Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of tensor product of vector and arbitrary classical or nonclassical type representations of q-algebra U'_q(so(n)) are found in an explicit form. The Wigner-Eckart theorem for vector operators is proved.
In these notes we construct a quantization functor, associating an Hilbert space H(V) to a finite dimensional symplectic vector space V over a finite field F_q. As a result, we obtain a canonical model for the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(V). The main technical result is a proof of a stronger form of the Stone-von Neumann theorem for the Heisenberg group over F_q. Our result answers, for the case of the Heisenberg group, a question of Kazhdan about the possible existence of a canonical Hilbert space attached to a coadjoint orbit of a general unipotent group over F_q.
Representations of quantum state vectors by complex phase space amplitudes, complementing the description of the density operator by the Wigner function, have been defined by applying the Weyl-Wigner transform to dyadic operators, linear in the state vector and anti-linear in a fixed `window state vector'. Here aspects of this construction are explored, with emphasis on the connection with Gabor's `windowed Fourier transform'. The amplitudes that arise for simple quantum states from various choices of window are presented as illustrations. Generalized Bargmann representations of the state vect…
In the first part of this article we provide a geometrically oriented approach to the theory of orbispaces which originally had been introduced by Chen. We explain the notion of a vector orbibundle and characterize the good sections of a reduced vector orbibundle as the smooth stratified sections. In the second part of the article we elaborate on the quantizability of a symplectic orbispace. By adapting Fedosov's method to the orbispace setting we show that every symplectic orbispace has a deformation quantization. As a byproduct we obtain that every symplectic orbifold possesses a star produc…
In this paper we study symmetries, Newtonoid vector fields, conservation laws, Noether's Theorem and its converse, in the framework of the $k$-symplectic formalism, using the Frölicher-Nijenhuis formalism on the space of $k^1$-velocities of the configuration manifold. For the case $k=1$, it is well known that Cartan symmetries induce and are induced by constants of motions, and these results are known as Noether's Theorem and its converse. For the case $k>1$, we provide a new proof for Noether's Theorem, which shows that, in the $k$-symplectic formalism, each Cartan symmetry induces a conserva…
A Lie system is a system of first-order ordinary differential equations describing the integral curves of a $t$-dependent vector field taking values in a finite-dimensional real Lie algebra of vector fields: a so-called Vessiot-Guldberg Lie algebra. We suggest the definition of a particular class of Lie systems, the $k$-symplectic Lie systems, admitting a Vessiot-Guldberg Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields with respect to the presymplectic forms of a $k$-symplectic structure. We devise new $k$-symplectic geometric methods to study their superposition rules, time independent constants of …
The transition from a classical to quantum theory is investigated within the context of orthogonal and symplectic Clifford algebras, first for particles, and then for fields. It is shown that the generators of Clifford algebras have the role of quantum mechanical operators that satisfy the Heisenberg equations of motion. For quadratic Hamiltonians, the latter equations are obtained from the classical equations of motion, rewritten in terms of the phase space coordinates and the corresponding basis vectors. Then, assuming that such equations hold for arbitrary path, i.e., that coordinates and m…
We study in this paper a new family of stable algebraic symplectic vector bundles of rank $ 2n $ on the complex projective space $P^{2n+1}$ whose classical null correlation bundles belongs. We show that these bundles are invariant under a miniversal deformation. We also study the sufficient cohomological conditions for a symplectic vector bundle on a projective variety to be stable.
We describe an essential improvement of our recent algorithm for computing cohomology of Lie (super)algebra based on partition of the whole cochain complex into minimal subcomplexes. We replace the arithmetic of rational numbers or integers by a much cheaper arithmetic of a modular field and use the inequality between the dimensions of cohomology H over any modular field F_p = Z/pZ and over Q: dim H(F_p) >= dim H(Q). With this inequality we can, by computing over arbitrary F_p, quickly find the (usually, rare) subcomplexes for which dim H(F_p) > 0 and then carry out the full computation over Q…
Nonholonomic systems are variational models commonly used for mechanical systems with ideal no-slip constraints. This note provides a differential-geometric derivation of the nonholonomic equations of motion for an arbitrary rigid body rolling on an arbitrary surface, via the semi-symplectic formalism, and in terms of shape operators (a.k.a. Weingarten maps). By a semi-symplectic reduction, the well-known differential equations in the case where the surface is a horizontal plane are shown to be semi-symplectic.
Symplectic spinors form an infinite-rank vector bundle. Dirac operators on this bundle were constructed recently by K.~Habermann. Here we study the spectral geometry aspects of these operators. In particular, we define the associated distance function and compute the heat trace asymptotics.
We define a quantum generalization of the algebra of functions over an associated vector bundle of a principal bundle. Here the role of a quantum principal bundle is played by a Hopf-Galois extension. Smash products of an algebra times a Hopf algebra H are particular instances of these extensions, and in these cases we are able to define a differential calculus over their associated vector bundles without requiring the use of a (bicovariant) differential structure over H. Moreover, if H is coquasitriangular, it coacts naturally on the associated bundle, and the differential structure is covari…
Yang-Baxter relations symmetric with respect to the ortho-symplectic superalgebras are studied. We start from the formulation of graded algebras and the linear superspace carrying the vector (fundamental) representation of the ortho-symplectic supergroup. On this basis we study the analogy of the Yang-Baxter operators considered earlier for the cases of orthogonal and symplectic symmetries: the vector (fundamental) R matrix, the L operator defining the Yangian algebra and its first and second order evaluations. We investigate the condition for L(u) in the case of the truncated expansion in inv…
