The Multi-Dimensional Hardy Uncertainty Principle and its Interpretation in Terms of the Wigner Distribution; Relation With the Notion of Symplectic Capacity
We extend Hardy's uncertainty principle for a square integrable function and its Fourier transform to the multidimensional case using a symplectic diagonalization. We use this extension to show that Hardy's uncertainty principle is equivalent to a statement on the Wigner distribution of the function. We give a geometric interpretation of our results in terms of the notion of symplectic capacity of an ellipsoid. Furthermore, we show that Hardy's uncertainty principle is valid for a general Lagrangian frame of the phase space. Finally, we discuss an extension of Hardy's theorem for the Wigner distribution for exponentials with convex exponents.
We prove that Wigner functions contain a symplectic connection. The latter covariantises the symplectic exterior derivative on phase space. We analyse the role played by this connection and introduce the notion of local symplectic covariance of quantum-mechanical states. This latter symmetry is at work in the Schroedinger equation on phase space.
We consider the Weyl quantization on a flat non-standard symplectic vector space. We focus mainly on the properties of the Wigner functions defined therein. In particular we show that the sets of Wigner functions on distinct symplectic spaces are different but have non-empty intersections. This extends previous results to arbitrary dimension and arbitrary (constant) symplectic structure. As a by-product we introduce and prove several concepts and results on non-standard symplectic spaces which generalize those on the standard symplectic space, namely the symplectic spectrum, Williamson's theor…
We show that the linear symplectic and anti-symplectic transformations form the maximal covariance group for both the Wigner transform and Weyl operators. The proof is based on a new result from symplectic geometry which characterizes symplectic and anti-symplectic matrices, and which allows us, in addition, to refine a classical result on the preservation of symplectic capacities of ellipsoids.
We find a relationship between the dynamics of the Gaussian wave packet and the dynamics of the corresponding Gaussian Wigner function from the Hamiltonian/symplectic point of view. The main result states that the momentum map corresponding to the natural action of the symplectic group on the Siegel upper half space yields the covariance matrix of the corresponding Gaussian Wigner function. This fact, combined with Kostant's coadjoint orbit covering theorem, establishes a symplectic/Poisson-geometric connection between the two dynamics. The Hamiltonian formulation naturally gives rise to corre…
We prove two results about Wigner distributions. Firstly, that the Wigner transform is the only sesquilinear map ${\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R}^n) \times {\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R}^n) \to {\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$ which is bounded and covariant under phase-space translations and linear symplectomorphisms. Consequently, the Wigner distributions form the only set of quasidistributions which is invariant under linear symplectic transformations. Secondly, we prove that the maximal group of (linear or non-linear) coordinate transformations that preserves the set of (pure or mixed) Wigner distributions …
It is shown that a $N\times N$ real symmetric [complex hermitian] positive definite matrix $V$ is congruent to a diagonal matrix modulo a pseudo-orthogonal [pseudo-unitary] matrix in $SO(m,n)$ [ $SU(m,n)$], for any choice of partition $N=m+n$. It is further shown that the method of proof in this context can easily be adapted to obtain a rather simple proof of Williamson's theorem which states that if $N$ is even then $V$ is congruent also to a diagonal matrix modulo a symplectic matrix in $Sp(N,{\cal R})$ [$Sp(N,{\cal C})$]. Applications of these results considered include a generalization of …
We study the covariance property of quadratic time-frequency distributions with respect to the action of the extended symplectic group. We show how covariance is related, and in fact in competition, with the possibility of damping the interferences which arise due to the quadratic nature of the distributions. We also show that the well known fully covariance property of the Wigner distribution in fact characterizes it (up to a constant factor) among the quadratic distributions $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\rightarrow C_{0}({ \mathbb{R}^{2n}})$. A similar characterization for the closely related Weyl …
We study the Wigner caustic on shell of a Lagrangian submanifold L of affine symplectic space. We present the physical motivation for studying singularities of the Wigner caustic on shell and present its mathematical definition in terms of a generating family. Because such a generating family is an odd deformation of an odd function, we study simple singularities in the category of odd functions and their odd versal deformations, applying these results to classify the singularities of the Wigner caustic on shell, interpreting these singularities in terms of the local geometry of L.
We prove, using symplectic methods and The Wigner formalism, a refinement of a criterion due to Werner and Wolf for the separability of bipartite Gaussian mixed states in an arbitrary number of dimensions. We use our result to show that one can characterize separability by comparing these states with separable pure Gaussian states.
A mapping between operators on the Hilbert space of $N$-dimensional quantum system and the Wigner quasiprobability distributions defined on the symplectic flag manifold is discussed. The Wigner quasiprobability distribution is constructed as a dual pairing between the density matrix and the Stratonovich-Weyl kernel. It is shown that the moduli space of the Stratonovich-Weyl kernel is given by an intersection of the coadjoint orbit space of the $SU(N)$ group and a unit $(N-2)$-dimensional sphere. The general consideration is exemplified by a detailed description of the moduli space of 2, 3 and …
Random matrix ensembles with orthogonal and unitary symmetry correspond to the cases of real symmetric and Hermitian random matrices respectively. We show that the probability density function for the corresponding spacings between consecutive eigenvalues can be written exactly in the Wigner surmise type form $a(s) e^{-b(s)}$ for $a$ simply related to a Painlevé transcendent and $b$ its anti-derivative. A formula consisting of the sum of two such terms is given for the symplectic case (Hermitian matrices with real quaternion elements).
In this work we study symplectic unitary representations for the Galilei group. As a consequence a Non-Linear Schrödinger equation is derived in phase space. The formalism is based on the non-commutative structure of the star-product, and using the group theory approach as a guide a physically consistent theory is constructed in phase space. The state is described by a quasi-probability amplitude that is in association with the Wigner function. With these results, we solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in phase space and obtained the Wigner function for the system considered.
The notion of polarity between sets, well-known from convex geometry, is a geometric version of the Fourier transform. We exploit this analogy to propose a new simple definition of quantum indeterminacy, using what we call "hbar-polar quantum pairs", which can be viewed as pairs of position-momentum indeterminacy with minimum spread. The existence of such pairs is guaranteed by the usual uncertainty principle, but is at the same time more general. We use recent advances in symplectic topology to show that this quantum indeterminacy can be measured using a particular symplectic capacity related…
Exploring the concept of the extended Galilei group $\mathcal{G}$, a representation for the symplectic quantum mechanics in the manifold of $\mathcal{G}$, written in the light-cone of a five-dimensional De Sitter space-time, is derived consistently with the method of the Wigner function. A Hilbert space is constructed endowed with a simplectic structure, studying unitary operators describing rotations and translations, whose generators satisfy the Lie algebra of $\mathcal {G}$. This representation gives rise to the Schrödinger (Klein-Gordon-like) equation for the wave functions in phase-space,…
Generation of Wigner functions of Landau levels and determination of their symmetries and generic properties are achieved in the autonomous framework of deformation quantization. Transformation properties of diagonal Wigner functions under space inversion, time reversal and parity transformations are specified and their invariance under a four-parameter subgroup of symplectic transformations are established. A generating function for all Wigner functions is developed and this has been identified as the phase-space coherent state for Landau levels. Integrated forms of generating function are us…
We propose a refinement of the Robertson-Schrodinger uncertainty principle (RSUP) using Wigner distributions. This new principle is stronger than the RSUP. In particular, and unlike the RSUP, which can be saturated by many phase space functions, the refined RSUP can be saturated by pure Gaussian Wigner functions only. Moreover, the new principle is technically as simple as the standard RSUP. In addition, it makes a direct connection with modern harmonic analysis, since it involves the Wigner transform and its symplectic Fourier transform, which is the radar ambiguity function. As a by-product …
We study the fluctuations of eigenvalues from a class of Wigner random matrices that generalize the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. We begin by considering an $n \times n$ matrix from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) or Gaussian symplectic ensemble (GSE) and let $x_k$ denote eigenvalue number $k$. Under the condition that both $k$ and $n-k$ tend to infinity with $n$, we show that $x_k$ is normally distributed in the limit. We also consider the joint limit distribution of $m$ eigenvalues from the GOE or GSE with similar conditions on the indices. The result is an $m$-dimensional normal dist…
We define and study the notion of quantum polarity, which is a kind of geometric Fourier transform between sets of positions and sets of momenta. Extending previous work of ours, we show that the orthogonal projections of the covariance ellipsoid of a quantum state on the configuration and momentum spaces form what we call a dual quantum pair. We thereafter show that quantum polarity allows solving the Pauli reconstruction problem for Gaussian wavefunctions. The notion of quantum polarity exhibits a strong interplay between the uncertainty principle and symplectic and convex geometry and our a…

Werner and Wolf have proven in Phys. Rev. Lett. 86(16) (2001) a very elegant necessary and sufficient condition for a bosonic continuous variable bipartite Gaussian mixed quantum state to be separable. This condition is, however, difficult to implement in practice. In the present Letter, we propose a simpler condition which only involves the calculation of the symplectic matrix in the Williamson diagonalization of the covariance matrix of the state under consideration. The main tool in our construction is the observation, proved in previous work, that the Wigner transform is covariant only und…
The Weyl correspondence and the related Wigner formalism lie at the core of traditional quantum mechanics. We discuss here an alternative quantization scheme, whose idea goes back to Born and Jordan, and which has recently been revived in another context, namely time-frequency analysis. We show that in particular the uncertainty principle does not enjoy full symplectic covariance properties in the Born and Jordan scheme, as opposed to what happens in the Weyl quantization.
We analyze the tomographic representation for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model within the Loop Quantum Cosmology framework. We focus on the Wigner quasi-probability distributions associated with Gaussian and Schrödinger cat states, and then, by applying a Radon integral transform for those Wigner functions, we are able to obtain the symplectic tomograms which define measurable probability distributions that fully characterize the quantum model of our interest. By appropriately introducing the quantum dispersion for a rotated and squeezed quadrature operator in terms of the position a…
In this work we derive a simple argument which shows that Gabor systems consisting of odd functions of $d$ variables and symplectic lattices of density $2^d$ cannot constitute a Gabor frame. In the 1--dimensional, separable case, this is a special case of a result proved by Lyubarskii and Nes, however, we use a different approach in this work exploiting the algebraic relation between the ambiguity function and the Wigner distribution as well as their relation given by the (symplectic) Fourier transform. Also, we do not need the assumption that the lattice is separable and, hence, new restricti…
Let ρ the density matrix of a mixed Gaussian state. Assuming that one of the Robertson--Schrödinger uncertainty inequalities is saturated by ρ, e.g. (Δ^{ρ}X_1)^2(Δ^{ρ}P_1)^2=Δ^{ρ}(X_1,P_1)^2+(1/4)\hbar^2, we show that there exists a unique pure Gaussian state whose Wigner distribution is dominated by that of ρ and having the same variances and covariance Δ^{ρ}X_1,Δ^{ρ}P_1, and Δ^{ρ}(X_1,P_1) as ρ. This property can be viewed as an analytic version of Gromov's non-squeezing theorem in the linear case, which implies that the intersection of a symplectic ball by a single plane of conjugate coordi…
