We address the problem of non-equilibrium superconductivity in the presence of microwave irradiation. We refine the old Eliashberg theory and generalize it to arbitrary temperatures $T$ and frequencies $ω$. Microwave radiation is shown to stimulate superconductivity in a bounded region in the $(ω,T)$ plane. In particular, for $T<0.47\, T_c$ and for $\hbarω>3.3\, k_BT_c$ superconductivity is always suppressed by a weak \emph{ac} driving. We also study the supercurrent in the presence of microwave irradiation and establish the criterion for the critical current enhancement. Our results can be qualitatively interpreted in terms of the interplay between the kinetic ("stimulation" vs. "heating") and spectral ("depairing") effects of the microwaves.
The research is focused on the modeling of nonlinear properties of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) thin films, using Bardeen, Cooper, Schrieffer and Lumped Element Circuit theories, with purpose to enhance microwave power handling capabilities of microwave filters and optimize design of microwave circuits in micro- and nano- electronics.
The response of superconducting devices to electromagnetic radiation is a core concept implemented in diverse applications, ranging from the currently used voltage standard to single photon detectors in astronomy. Suprisingly, a sufficiently high power subgap radiation may stimulate superconductivity itself. The possibility of stimulating type II superconductors, in which the radiation may interact also with vortex cores, remains however unclear. Here we report on superconductivity enhanced by GHz radiation in type II superconducting Pb films in the presence of vortices. The stimulation effect…
Here we give a results of experimental study of enhancement of superconductivity by microwave irradiation in superconducting films. An influence of the power, frequency of microwave irradiation, as well as temperature and width of superconducting films on behavior of experimental dependencies of enhanced critical current and the current at which a vortex structure of the resistive state vanishes and the phase-slip first line appears is analyzed. The experimental studies of films with different width reveal that the effect of superconductivity enhancement by microwave field is common and occurs…
We give a broad overview of the history of microwave superconductivity and explore the technological developments that have followed from the unique electrodynamic properties of superconductors. Their low loss properties enable resonators with high quality factors that can nevertheless handle extremely high current densities. This in turn enables superconducting particle accelerators, high-performance filters and analog electronics, including metamaterials, with extreme performance. The macroscopic quantum properties have enabled new generations of ultra-high-speed digital computing and extrao…
We review recent progress in the theory of electromagnetic response of dirty superconductors subject to microwave radiation. The theory originally developed by Eliashberg in 1970 and soon after that elaborated in a number of publications addressed the effect of superconductivity enhancement in the vicinity of the transition temperature. This effect originates from nonequilibrium redistribution of quasiparticles and requires a minimal microwave frequency depending on the inelastic relaxation rate and temperature. In a recent series of papers we generalized the Eliashberg theory to arbitrary tem…
We investigated the effects of Se substitution on the lattice constants and superconducting properties of CeO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2. With increasing Se concentration, the a lattice constant increased, while the c lattice constant did not show any significant increase between x = 0.1 and x = 0.5. Bulk superconductivity was observed in samples with x = 0.2-0.4, and the superconducting transition temperature was the highest at x = 0.3. The obtained superconductivity phase diagram was compared to those of LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2 and NdO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2.
We show that two different superconducting phases exist at high pressures in the optimized tetradymite topological insulators Bi2Te2Se (BTS) and Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S (BSTS). The superconducting phases emerge at structural phase transitions, the first at 8.4 GPa for BTS and 12.4 GPa for BSTS, and the second at 13.6 GPa for BTS and 20.4 GPa, for BSTS. Electronic structure calculations show that these phases do not have topological character. Comparison of our results with prior work on Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and (Bi,Sb)2(Se,Te)3 allows us to uncover a universal phase diagram for pressure-induced superconducti…
We investigated transport and magnetic properties of NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystal under hydrostatic pressures up to 50\,GPa. The ambient pressure superconductivity at $T_{c} \sim$ 45.4\,K is fully suppressed at $P_{c} \sim$ 21 GPa. Upon further increase of the pressure, the ferromagnetism associated with the order of rare-earth subsystem is induced at the border of superconductivity. Our finding is supported by the hysteresis in the magnetization $M$($H$) loops and the strong increase in the field cooled data, $M$($T$), toward low temperatures. We also show that the temperature evol…
Based on a combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transports, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and pressure effect measurements, we report a series of BiS$_{2}$-based Sr$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$FBiS$_{2}$ superconductors with the maximum $T_c$ of 2.7 K for $x =$ 0.5 at ambient pressure. Superconductivity can be only observed at 0.4 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7 while the normal state resistivity shows the semiconducting-like behaviors. $χ(T)$ displays the low superconducting shielding volume fractions and $C(T)$ does not exhibit distinguishable anomaly around $T_c$, suggesting a filamentary supercond…
Field-induced suppression of the pi-band superconductivity and magnetic hysteresis in the microwave surface resistance of MgB_2 at temperatures near T_c
We trace the historical fate of experiment and theory of microwave-stimulated superconductivity as originally reported for constriction-type superconducting weak links. It is shown that the observed effect disappeared by improving weak links to obtain the desired Josephson-properties. Separate experiments were carried out to evaluate the validity of the proposed theory of Eliash'berg for $\textit{energy-gap-enhancement}$ in superconducting films in a microwave field, without reaching a full quantitatively reliable measurement of the stimulated energy gap in a microwave-field, but convincing en…
Detailed knowledge of the phase diagram and the nature of the competing magnetic and superconducting phases is imperative for an understanding of the physics of iron-based superconductivity. Here, we show using thermodynamic probes that the phase diagram of the first discovered, and highest Tc, 122-type material, Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is in fact much richer than previously reported. Inside the usual stripe-type magnetic order with C2-symmetry, we find a small pocket of a tetragonal, C4-symmetric phase, which surprisingly reverts back to the C2-phase at or slightly below the superconducting transition.…
A series of (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OHFeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1) samples were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal reaction method and the phase diagram is established. Magnetic susceptibility suggests that an antiferromagnetism arising from (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OH layers coexists with superconductivity, and the antiferromagnetic transition temperature nearly remains constant for various S doping levels. In addition, the lattice parameters of the both a and c axes decrease and the superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ is gradually suppressed with the substitution of S f…
High-temperature superconductivity is closely adjacent to a long-range antiferromagnet, which is called a parent compound. In cuprates, all parent compounds are alike and carrier doping leads to superconductivity, so a unified phase diagram can be drawn. However, the properties of parent compounds for iron-based superconductors show significant diversity and both carrier and isovalent dopings can cause superconductivity, which casts doubt on the idea that there exists a unified phase diagram for them. Here we show that the ordered moments in a variety of iron pnictides are inversely proportion…

In many cases, unconventional superconductivity are realized by suppressing another order parameter, such as charge density wave (CDW) or spin density wave (SDW). This suggests that the fluctuations of these order parameters play an important role in producing superconductivity. LaPt$_2$Ge$_2$ undergoes a tetragonal-to-monoclinic structural phase transition (SPT) at $T_{\rm s}$ = 394 K, accompanying a double period modulation in the $a$-axis direction, and superconducts at $T_{\rm c}$ = 0.41 K. We performed band calculations and found 2D (two dimensional)-like Fermi surfaces with partial nesti…
The interplay of magnetism and superconductivity (SC) has been a focus of interest in condensed matter physics for decades. EuFe2As2 has been identified as a potential platform to investigate interactions between structural, magnetic, electronic effects as well as coexistence of magnetism and SC with similar transition temperatures. However, there are obvious inconsistencies in the reported phase diagrams of Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 crystals grown by different methods. For transition metal arsenide (TMA)-flux-grown crystals, even the existence of SC is open for dispute. Here we re-examine the phase di…
We study topological phase transitions in three-dimensional odd-parity or noncentrosymmetric superconductors with mirror symmetry when time-reversal symmetry is broken. We construct a generic phase diagram for Weyl superconductivity in the mirror-symmetric superconductors. It is shown that Weyl superconductivity generally emerges between the trivial and the topological crystalline superconductor phases. We demonstrate how a trajectory of the Weyl nodes determines the change in mirror Chern numbers in the topological phase transition. We also discuss a relationship between particle-hole symmetr…
The pseudogap (PG) excitations in the framework of multiband superconductivity are analysed. Calculations for the doping phase diagram of electron-doped cuprate superconductors have been made. A nonrigid multiband model has been used. The interband pairing acts between the upper Hubbard band (UHB) and midgap states created (and shifted upwards) by doping. The appearance of two PG and two phase diagram critical points (CP) is suggested. The larger antinodal PG reflects the destruction of the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The second, smaller PG is a near-nodal event with exposed dopin…
We investigate the phase diagram of two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model by employing the optimization variational Monte Carlo method. The 2D Hubbard model is the most simple electronic model for cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The phase diagram consists of three regions; they are antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) region, superconducting (SC) region and the coexistent region of superconductivity and antiferromgantism. The phase diagram obtained by numerical calculations well agrees with the experimental phase diagram for high-temperature cuprates. We mainly focused on the effect of $t'…
A mean-field treatment is presented of a square lattice two-orbital-model for ${\rm BiS_2}$ taking into account intra- and inter-orbital superconductivity. A rich phase diagram involving both types of superconductivity is presented as a function of the ratio between the couplings of electrons in the same and different orbitals (${\rm η= V_{XX}/V_{XY}}$) and electron doping $x$. With the help of a quantity we call orbital-mixing ratio, denoted as $R(ϕ)$, the phase diagram is analyzed using a simple and intuitive picture based on how $R(ϕ)$ varies as electron doping increases. The predictive pow…
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard model based on the optimization variational Monte Carlo method. We use a wave function that is an off-diagonal type given as $ψ=\exp(-λK)P_Gψ_0$, where $ψ_0$ is a one-particle state, $P_G$ is the Gutzwiller operator, $K$ is the kinetic operator, and $λ$ is a variational parameter. The many-body effect plays an important role as an origin of spin correlation and superconductivity in correlated electron systems. We examine the competition between the antiferromagnetic state and superconducting state by varying the Coulo…
We have investigated the crystal structure and physical properties of LaO1-xFxBiSSe to reveal the intrinsic superconductivity phase diagram of the BiCh2-based layered compound family. From synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinements with anisotropic displacement parameters, we clearly found that the in-plane disorder in the BiSSe layer was fully suppressed for all x. In LaO1-xFxBiSSe, metallic conductivity and superconductivity are suddenly induced by electron doping even at x = 0.05 and 0.1 with a monoclinic structure. In addition, x (F concentration) dependence of the transition t…
The type-II Dirac semimetal PdTe2 was recently reported to be a type-I superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature Tc = 1.65 K. However, the recent results from tunneling and point contact spectroscopy suggested the unusual state of a mixture of type-I and type-II superconductivity. These contradictory results mean that there is no clear picture of the superconducting phase diagram and warrants a detailed investigation of the superconducting phase. We report here the muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on the superconducting state of the topological Dirac se…
