We report the single crystal growth of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (0 <= x <= 0.082) from Sn flux. The temperature-composition phase diagram is mapped out based on the magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements. Phase diagram of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 is qualitatively different from those of Sr and Ba, it could be due to both the charge doping and structural tuning effects associated with Co substitution.
The effect of Mg and C contents on TC in MgCNi3, and structure and superconductivity of MgCNi3-xCox were studied. It is found that the excess of Mg and C in initial material mixture is favorable to improve TC and obtain single-phase samples. For preparing MgCNi3 superconductor, the optimum composition of starting materials is MgC1.45Ni3 with 20wt.% excess of Mg of the stoichiometric composition. In MgCNi3-xCox system, a continuous solid solution is formed, lattice parameter decreases slightly and TC decreases obviously with increasing x. A suppression of superconductivity is observed due to th…
We report magnetic susceptibility, resistivity and heat capacity measurements on single crystals of the Sr(Fe1-xCox)2As2 and Sr1-yEuy(Fe0.88Co0.12)2As2 series. The optimal Co concentration for superconductivity in Sr(Fe1-xCox)2As2 is determined to be x ~ 0.12. Based on this we grew members of the Sr1-yEuy(Fe0.88Co0.12)2As2 series so as to examine the effects of well defined, local magnetic moments, on the superconducting state. We show that superconductivity is gradually suppressed by paramagnetic Eu2+ doping and coexists with antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu2+ as long as Tc > TN. For y >= 0.6…
Directional point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) measurements in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals (Tc=24.5 K) indicate the presence of two superconducting gaps with no line nodes on the Fermi surface. The PCAR spectra also feature additional structures related to the electron-boson interaction, from which the characteristic boson energy Omega_b(T) is obtained, very similar to the spin-resonance energy observed in neutron scattering experiments. Both the gaps and the additional structures can be reproduced within a three-band s+- Eliashberg model by using an electron-boson spectral function …
The interplay of magnetism and superconductivity (SC) has been a focus of interest in condensed matter physics for decades. EuFe2As2 has been identified as a potential platform to investigate interactions between structural, magnetic, electronic effects as well as coexistence of magnetism and SC with similar transition temperatures. However, there are obvious inconsistencies in the reported phase diagrams of Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 crystals grown by different methods. For transition metal arsenide (TMA)-flux-grown crystals, even the existence of SC is open for dispute. Here we re-examine the phase di…
Increasing doping concentration (x) in Pnictide superconductors results in the suppression of long range magnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity. While doping destroys long range magnetic order however the effect if any of the surviving magnetic fluctuations on superconductivity in Pnictides is currently not well understood. In optimally doped BaFe2-xCoxAs2 single crystals, below Tc we observe local regions with positive magnetization coexisting along with superconductivity at low applied magnetic fields (H). With increasing H the positive magnetization response gets weaker and t…
75As NMR and susceptiblity were measured in a Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal for x=6%. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra and relaxation rates allow to show that all Fe sites experience an incommensurate magnetic ordering below T=31K. Comparison with undoped compound allows to estimate a typical moment of 0.05 muB. Anisotropy of the NMR widths can be interpreted using a model of incommensurability with a wavevector (1/2-eps,0,l) with eps of the order of 0.04. Below TC=21.8K, a full volume superconductivity develops as shown by susceptibility and relaxation rate, and magnetic order remai…
Using muon spin rotation (muSR) we investigated the magnetic and superconducting properties of a series of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with 0 =< x =< 0.15. Our study details how the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed upon Co substitution and how it coexists with superconductivity. In the non-superconducting samples at 0 < x < 0.04 the antiferromagnetic order parameter is only moderately suppressed. With the onset of superconductivity this suppression becomes faster and it is most rapid between x = 0.045 and 0.05. As was previously demonstrated by muSR at x = 0.055 [P. Marsik et al., Ph…
We performed high-field magnetotransport and magnetization measurements on a single crystal of the 122-phase iron pnictide Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Unlike the HTS cuprates and 1111-phase oxypnictides, Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 showed practically no broadening of the resistive transitions under magnetic fields up to 45 T. The mass anisotropy gamma = Hc2ab/Hc2c deduced from the slopes of the upper critical field dHc2ab/dT = 4.9T/K and dHc2c/dT = 2.5T/K decreases from ~2 near Tc, to ~1.5 at lower temperatures. We observed the irreversibility field close to Hc2, and a rather unusual symmetric volume pinning force…
The upper critical field was measured upto 12 T for three BaFe2-xCoxAs2 single crystals with estimated Co concentrations of x = 0.082, x = 0.117 and x = 0.143. HC2 versus temperature was measured from temperature dependent resistivity, for various applied magnetic fields, H || ab and H || c. The [dHC2/dT]T=Tc, normalized with the corresponding TC, decreases with increasing Co content, for both directions. The anisotropy γ defined as HC2 || ab / HC2 || c shows a distinct increase with Co content, and its temperature dependence shows a peak close to the TC. Magneto transport measurements, in the…
We report muon spin relaxation/rotation (uSR) measurements of single crystal Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with x=0.038 and 0.047. Zero field (ZF)-uSR and Transverse field (TF)-iSR measurements of these underdoped samples find the presence of magnetism and superconductivity. We find internal fields along the c-axis whose magnitude decreases with increasing doping. We find evidence for a low-temperature volume fraction that is only weakly magnetic, where that volume fraction increases with increasing Co doping of the sample. TF-uSR measurements show slight changes in the spectra that indicate magnetic inhom…
The interrelation between heterogeneity and flux pinning is studied in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with widely varying Co-content x. Magnetic Bitter decoration of the superconducting vortex ensemble in crystals with x = 0:075 and x = 0:1 reveal highly disordered vortex structures. The width of the Meissner belt observed at the edges of the crystals, and above the surface steps formed by cleaving, as well as the width of the intervortex distance distribution, indicate that the observed vortex ensemble is established at a temperature just below the critical temperature Tc. The vortex intera…
We report the experimental results of temperature dependent polarized As K-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of LaFe1-xCoxAsO (x=0.0 and 0.11) single-crystals. By aligning the Fe-As bond direction in the direction of the x-ray beam polarization we have been able to identify an anomaly in the Fe-As bond correlations at the tetragonal to orthorhombic transition at 150K, while previous investigations with standard unpolarized EXAFS of undoped LaFeAsO powder samples were not able to detect any such anomaly. Using our approach we have been able to identify in the superconducting…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin excitation anisotropy in mechanically detwinned Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with x = 0.048 and 0.054. Both samples exhibit a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at Ts, a collinear static antiferromagnetic (AF) order at wave vector Q1 = QAF = (1, 0) below the Neel temperature TN, and superconductivity below Tc (Ts > TN > Tc). In the high temperature paramagnetic tetragonal phase (T > Ts), spin excitations centered at Q1 and Q2 = (0, 1) are gapless and have four-fold (C4) rotational symmetry. On cooling to below TN but above Tc, spin excitation…
We report synthesis of Co substitution at Fe site in Fe1-xCoxSe0.5Te0.5 (x=0.0 to 0.10) single crystals via vacuum shield solid state reaction route using flux free method. Single crystal XRD results showed that these crystals grow in (00l) plane i.e., orientation in c-direction. All the crystals possess tetragonal structure having P4/nmm space group. Detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show that the crystals are grown in slab-like morphology. The EDAX results revealed the final elemental composition to be near stoichiometric. Powder X-Ray diffraction (PXRD) Rietveld analysis re…
The spatially resolved electrical transport properties have been studied on the surface of optimally-doped superconducting Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal by using a four-probe scanning tunneling microscopy. While some non-uniform contrast appears near the edge of the cleaved crystal, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals mostly uniform contrast. For the regions that showed uniform SEM contrast, a sharp superconducting transition at TC = 22.1 K has been observed with a transition width (delta)Tc = 0.2 K. In the non-uniform contrast region, TC is found to vary between 19.6 and 22.2 K w…
We investigated the elastic properties of the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with eight Co concentrations. The elastic constant C66 shows large elastic softening associated with the structural phase transition. The C66 was analyzed base on localized and itinerant pictures of Fe-3d electrons, which shows the strong electron-lattice coupling and a possible mass enhancement in this system. The results resemble those of unconventional superconductors, where the properties of the system are governed by the quantum fluctuations associated with the zero-temperature critical point of the l…
We discuss the irreversible magnetic properties of self-flux grown Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals for a wide range of concentrations covering the whole phase diagram from the underdoped to the overdoped regime, x=0.038, 0.047, 0.058, 0.071, 0.074, 0.10, 0.106 and 0.118. Samples were characterized by a magneto-optical method and show excellent spatial uniformity of the superconducting state. The overall behavior closely follows classical Bean model of the critical state. The field-dependent magnetization exhibits second peak at a temperature and doping - dependent magnetic field, Hp. The evol…
We study the effect of applied strain as a physical control parameter for the phase transitions of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 using resistivity, magnetization, x-ray diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Biaxial strain, namely compression of the basal plane of the tetragonal unit cell, is created through firm bonding of samples to a rigid substrate, via differential thermal expansion. This strain is shown to induce a magneto-structural phase transition in originally paramagnetic samples; and superconductivity in previously non-superconducting ones. The magneto-structural transition is gradual as …
Precision measurements of active and reactive components of in-plane microwave surface impedance were performed in single crystals of optimally-doped Fe-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 0.074, Tc = 22.8 K). Measurements in a millimeter wavelength range (Ka band, 35-40 GHz) were performed using whispering gallery mode excitations in the ultrahigh quality factor quasioptical sapphire disk resonator with YBa2Cu2O7 superconducting (Tc = 90 K) end plates. The temperature variation of the London penetration depth is best described by a power-law function, delta λ(T) is proportional to T wi…
We present a calorimetric study on single crystals of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 0, 0.032, 0.051, 0.056, 0.063, and 0.146). The combined first order spin-density wave/structural transition occurs in the parent CaFe2As2 compound at 168 K and gradually shifts to lower temperature for low doping levels (x = 0.032 and x = 0.051). It is completely suppressed upon higher doping x = 0.056. Simultaneously, superconductivity appears at lower temperature with a transition temperature around Tc = 14.1 K for Ca(Fe0.937Co0.063)2As2. The phase diagram of Ca(Fe0.937Co0.063)2As2 has been derived and the upper crit…
Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy shows stripes of increased diamagnetic susceptibility in underdoped, but not overdoped, single crystals of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. These stripes of increased diamagnetic susceptibility are consistent with enhanced superfluid density on twin boundaries. Individual vortices avoid pinning on or crossing the stripes, and prefer to travel parallel to them. These results indicate a relationship between superfluid density, local strain, and frustrated magnetism, and demonstrate two mechanisms for enhancing critical currents.
Millimeter-sized single crystals of LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO1-xFx, and LaFe1-xCoxAsO were grown in NaAs flux at ambient pressure. The detailed growth procedure and crystal characterizations are reported. The as-grown crystals have typical dimensions of 3 * 4 * 0.05-0.3 mm3 with the crystallographic c-axis perpendicular to the plane of the plate-like single crystals. Some crystals manifest linear dimensions as large as 4-5 mm. X-ray and neutron single crystal scattering confirmed that LaFeAsO crystals exhibit a structural phase transition at Ts ~ 154 K and a magnetic phase transition at TSDW ~ 140 K. T…
We report the in-plane anisotropy of the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients as well as of the electrical resistivity determined for the series of the strain-detwinned single crystals of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Two underdoped samples (x = 0.024, 0.045) exhibiting the transition from the tetragonal paramagnetic phase to the orthorhombic spin density wave (SDW) phase (at Ttr = 100 and 60 K, respectively) show an onset of the Nernst anisotropy at temperatures above 200 K, which is significantly higher than Ttr. In the optimally doped sample (x = 0.06) the transport properties also appear to be in-plane ani…
Longitudinal and transverse transport coefficients of the Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with x = 0, 0.045, 0.06 and 0.244 were measured in the temperature range 1.4 - 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 12.5 T. The resulting data were used to determine the temperature dependence of the Hall Lorenz number (Lxy) and its evolution with doping. Lxy is defined by the electronic contributions to the thermal and electrical conductivities and it is found to differ from its canonical behavior. This shows the emergence of a pseudogap in samples at intermediate doping.
Similar to the cuprate high TC superconductors, the iron pnictide superconductors also lie in close proximity to a magnetically ordered phase. A central debate concerning the superconducting mechanism is whether the local magnetic moments play an indispensable role or the itinerant electron description is sufficient. A key step for resolving this issue is to acquire a comprehensive picture regarding the nature of various phases and interactions in the iron compounds. Here we report the doping, temperature, and spatial evolutions of the electronic structure of NaFe1-xCoxAs studied by scanning t…
We report on the thermally activated flux flow dependency on the doping dependent mixed state in NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0.01, 0.03, and 0.07) crystals using the magnetoresistivity in the case of B//c-axis and B//ab-plane. It was found clearly that irrespective of the doping ratio, magnetoresistivity showed a distinct tail just above the Tc, offset associated with the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) in our crystals. Furthermore, in TAFF region the temperature dependence of the activation energy follows the relation U(T, B)=U_0 (B) (1-T/T_c )^q with q=1.5 in all studied crystals. The magnetic fiel…
Although the origin of high temperature superconductivity in the iron pnictides is still under debate, it is widely believed that magnetic interactions or fluctuations play an important role in triggering Cooper pairing. Because of the relevance of magnetism to pairing, the question of whether long range spin magnetic order can coexist with superconductivity microscopically has attracted strong interests. The available experimental methods used to answer this question are either bulk probes or local ones without control of probing position, thus the answers range from mutual exclusion to homog…
The implementation of an Fe buffer layer is a promising way to obtain epitaxial growth of Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122). However, the crystalline quality and the superconducting properties of Co-doped Ba-122 are influenced by the Fe buffer layer thickness, dFe. The well-textured growth of the Fe/Ba-122 bilayer with dFe = 15 nm results in a high Jc of 0.45 MAcm$^{-2}$ at 12 K in self-field, whereas a low Jc value of 61000 Acm$^{-2}$ is recorded for the bilayer with dFe = 4 nm at the corresponding reduced temperature due to the presence of grain boundaries.
The low temperature specific heat of annealed single crystal samples of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with compositions spanning the entire superconducting phase diagram was measured. Effort was made to discover the best annealing schedule to maximize Tc and minimize transition width in these samples. Values of deltaC/Tc normalized to 100% superconducting volume fractions varied proportionally to Tc^alpha. Within a rather narrow error bar of +-0.15, the exponent alpha was the same (approximately 2) over a range of compositions (0.055 < x < 0.15) around the optimal concentration, x=0.08, where Tc is the max…
We studied the doping and temperature (T) dependence of the infrared (IR) response of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals. We show that a weak band around 1000 cm-1, that was previously interpreted in terms of interaction of the charge carriers with magnetic excitations or of a pseudogap, is rather related to low-energy interband transitions. Specifically, we show that this band exhibits a similar doping and T-dependence as the hole pockets seen by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Notably, we find that it vanishes as a function of doping near the critical point where superconduc…
Thermal expansion data are used to study the uniaxial pressure dependence of the electronic/magnetic entropy of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Uniaxial pressure is found to be proportional to doping and, thus, also an appropriate tuning parameter in this system. Many of the features predicted to occur for a pressure-tuned quantum critical system, in which superconductivity is an emergent phase hiding the critical point, are observed. The electronic/magnetic Grüneisen parameters associated with the spin-density wave and superconducting transitions further demonstrate an intimate connection between both orde…
Nematicity, defined as broken rotational symmetry, has recently been observed in competing phases proximate to the superconducting phase in the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Similarly, the new iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition (i.e. a broken C4 symmetry) that either precedes or is coincident with a collinear spin density wave (SDW) transition in undoped parent compounds, and superconductivity arises when both transitions are suppressed via doping. Evidence for strong in-plane anisotropy in the SDW state in this fa…
This paper reports comprehensive results on thin-film growth of 122-type iron-pnictide superconductors, AE(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (AE = Ca, Sr, and Ba, AEFe2As2:Co) by a pulsed laser deposition method using a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser as an excitation source. The most critical parameter to produce the SrFe2As2:Co and BaFe2As2:Co phases is the substrate temperature (Ts). It is difficult to produce highly-pure CaFe2As2:Co phase thin film at any Ts. For BaFe2As2:Co epitaxial films, controlling Ts at 800-850 °C and growth rate to 2.8-3.3 Å/s produced high-quality films with good crystal…
The angular-dependent critical current density, Jc(theta), and the upper critical field, Hc2(theta), of epitaxial Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 thin films have been investigated. No Jc(theta) peaks for H || c were observed regardless of temperatures and magnetic fields. In contrast, Jc(theta) showed a broad maximum at theta=90 degree, which arises from intrinsic pinning. All data except at theta=90 degree can be scaled by the Blatter plot. Hc2(theta) near Tc follows the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau expression. The mass anisotropy increased from 1.5 to 2 with increasing temperature, which is an evidence for …
We investigated the optical spectrum of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with various doping levels. It is found that the low-energy optical conductivity spectrum of this system can be decomposed into two components: a sharp Drude term and a broad "incoherent" term. For the compounds showing magnetic order, a gap appears predominantly in the "incoherent" component, while an s-wave like superconducting gap opens in both components for highly doped compounds. The Drude weight steadily increases as doping proceeds, consistent with electron doping in this system. On the other hand, the "incoherent…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 4.7%) where superconductivity and long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order coexist. The broad magnetic spectrum found in the normal state develops into a magnetic resonance feature below TC that has appreciable dispersion along c-axis with a bandwidth of 3-4 meV. This is in contrast to the optimally doped x = 8.0% composition, with no long-range AFM order, where the resonance exhibits a much weaker dispersion [see Lumsden et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 107005 (2009)]. The results suggest that the re…
The electronic structure of electron doped iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe1- xCox)2As2 has been measured with Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. The data reveal a marked photon energy dependence of points in momentum space where the bands cross the Fermi energy, a distinctive and direct signature of three-dimensionality in the Fermi surface topology. By providing a unique example of high temperature superconductivity hosted in layered compounds with three-dimensional electronic structure, these findings suggest that the iron-arsenides are unique materials, quite different from the …
Temperature-dependent, in-plane, thermoelectric power (TEP) data are presented for Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2 (0 < x < 0.36) single crystals. The previously outlined x - T phase diagram for this system is confirmed. The analysis of TEP evolution with Ru-doping suggests significant changes in the electronic structure, correlations and/or scattering occurring near ~7% and ~30% of Ru-doping levels. These results are compared with an extended set of TEP data for the electron-doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 series.
The nematic susceptibility of hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 and electron-doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 iron-based superconductors is obtained from measurements of the elastic shear modulus using a three-point bending setup in a capacitance dilatometer. Nematic fluctuations, although weakened by doping, extend over the whole superconducting dome in both systems, suggesting their close tie to superconductivity. Evidence for quantum critical behavior of the nematic susceptibility is, surprisingly, only found for Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, the system with the lower maximal Tc value.
A non-equilibrium phase (Sr1-xLax)Fe2As2 was formed by epitaxial film-growth. The resulting films emerged superconductivity along with suppression of the resistivity anomaly that is associated with magnetic and structural phase transitions. The maximum critical temperature was 20.8 K, which is almost the same as that of directly electron-doped Sr(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Its electronic phase diagram is much similar to that of Sr(Fe1-xCox)2As2, indicating that the difference in the electron doping sites does not influence the superconducting properties of 122-type SrFe2As2.
The NMR results in iron pnictides BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 are analyzed based on the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) spin fluctuation theory. The temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate (T_1)^{-1} as well as the electrical resistivity is well reproduced by a SCR model where two-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations are dominant. The successful description of the crossover feature from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid behavior strongly suggests that low-lying spin fluctuations in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 possess an itinerant AF nature, and …
An extensive calorimetric study of the normal- and superconducting-state properties of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 is presented for 0 < x < 0.2. The normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient increases (decreases) with Co doping for x < 0.06 (x > 0.06), which illustrates the strong competition between magnetism and superconductivity to monopolize the Fermi surface in the underdoped region and the filling of the hole bands for overdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. All superconducting samples exhibit a residual electronic density of states of unknown origin in the zero-temperature limit, which is minimal at optimal doping …
We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements of single crystal Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. From measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth $λ$ we find that for optimally- and over-doped samples, $1/λ(T\to 0)^2$ varies monotonically with the superconducting transition temperature T$_{\rm C}$. Within the superconducting state we observe a positive shift in the muon precession signal, likely indicating that the applied field induces an internal magnetic field. The size of the induced field decreases with increasing doping but is present for al…
We report a systematic study of the transport properties in the series of Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with x = 0, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.30. Spin-density-wave order is observed in the undoped and the least doped samples (x = 0, 0.15), while for x = 0.15 and 0.20 Eu(Fe1-xCox)2As2 becomes a superconductor. We found the properties of the parent EuFe2As2 compound well described by the Dirac fermions model, whereas cobalt doping caused an evolution of the system toward a regular metallic state. The antiferromagnetic ordering of the Eu2+ ions at T_N ~ 20 K has only minor influence on the measured qua…
Low temperature specific heat, C, in magnetic fields up to Hc2 is reported for underdoped Ba(Fe0.955Co0.045)2As2 (Tc=8 K) and for three overdoped samples Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x=0.103, 0.13, and 0.15, Tc=17.2, 16.5, and 11.7 K respectively). Previous measurements of thermal conductivity (as a function of temperature and field) and penetration depth on comparable composition samples gave some disagreement as to whether there was fully gapped/nodal behavior in the under-/overdoped materials respectively. The present work shows that the measured behavior of the specific heat gamma (proportional to C/…
Iron-based high temperature superconductivity develops when the `parent' antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic phase is suppressed, typically by introduction of dopant atoms. But their impact on atomic-scale electronic structure, while in theory quite complex, is unknown experimentally. What is known is that a strong transport anisotropy with its resistivity maximum along the crystal b-axis, develops with increasing concentration of dopant atoms; this `nematicity' vanishes when the `parent' phase disappears near the maximum superconducting Tc. The interplay between the electronic structure surroundin…
Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 superconducting thin films have been grown on SrTiO3, (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3, LaAlO3 and YAlO3 (YAO) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. All the films, except on YAO, have been grown epitaxially without buffer layers. The films deposited on YAO contained 45 degree in-plane rotated grains and showed a broad superconducting transition. The onset Tc of the films is observed to increase from 16.2 K to 24.5 K with increasing c/a, mainly due to a slight distortion of the AsFe4 tetrahedron. From this correlation, we expect that higher superconducting transition temperatur…
We present temperature dependent magnetic neutron diffraction measurements on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ for $x$ = 0.039, 0.022, and 0.021 as-grown single crystals. Our investigations probe the behavior near the magnetic tricritical point in the ($x$,$T$) plane, $x_{tr} \approx $0.022, as well as systematically exploring the character of the magnetic phase transition across a range of doping values. All samples show long range antiferromagnetic order that may be described near the transition by simple power laws, with $β$ =~0.306$\pm$0.060 for $x$ =~0.039, $β$ =~0.208$\pm$0.005 for $…
Single crystals of Tl0.58Rb0.42Fe1.72Se2 are successfully grown with the superconducting transition temperatures Tconset=32K and Tczero=31.4K. The Hall coefficient exhibits a multi-band behavior, which is very similar to that of all other Fe-based superconductors. We found that the susceptibility at the normal state decreases with decreasing the temperature, indicating a strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuation at the normal state, which might be related to the superconductivity (SC). We also determined the upper critical fields in ab-plane and along c-axis. The anisotropy of the superc…
The magnetic structure of superconducting Eu(Fe0.82Co0.18)2As2 is unambiguously determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction. A long-range ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+ moments along the c-direction is revealed below the magnetic phase transition temperature Tc = 17 K. In addition, the antiferromagnetism of the Fe2+ moments still survives and the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition is also observed, although the transition temperatures of the Fe-spin density wave (SDW) order and the structural phase transition are significantly suppressed to Tn = 70 K and Ts = 90 K, re…
Ultrafast terahertz (THz) pump{probe spectroscopy reveals unusual out-of-equilibrium Cooper pair dynamics driven by femtosecond (fs) optical quench of superconductivity (SC) in iron pnictides. We observe a two{step quench of the SC gap, where an abnormally slow (many 100's of ps) quench process is clearly distinguished from the usual fast (sub-ps) hot{phonon{mediated scattering channel. This pair breaking dynamics depends strongly on doping, pump uence, and temperature. The above observations, together with quantum kinetic modeling of non-equilibrium SC and magnetic correlations, provide evide…
Superconducting and normal state transport properties in iron pnictides are sensitive to disorder and impurity scattering. By investigation of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 thin films with varying Co concentration, we demonstrate that in the dirty limit the superconducting dome in the electronic phase diagram of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 shifts towards lower doping concentrations, which differs significantly from observations in single crystals. We show that especially in the underdoped regime superconducting transition temperatures higher than 27 K are possible.
75As NMR and susceptiblity were measured in a Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal for x=6% for various field H values and orientations. The sharpness of the superconducting and magnetic transitions demonstrates a homogeneity of the Co doping x better than +-0.25%. On the nanometer scale, the paramagnetic part of the NMR spectra is found very anisotropic and very narrow for H//ab which allows to rule out the interpretation of Ref.[6] in terms of strong Co induced electronic inhomogeneities. We propose that a distribution of hyperfine couplings and chemical shifts due to the Co effect on its nearest…
The spin dynamics in single crystal, electron-doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 has been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering over the full range from undoped to the overdoped regime. We observe damped magnetic fluctuations in the normal state of the optimally doped compound (x=0.06) that share a remarkable similarity with those in the paramagnetic state of the parent compound (x=0). In the overdoped superconducting compound (x=0.14), magnetic excitations show a gap-like behavior, possibly related to a topological change in the hole Fermi surface (Lifshitz transition), while the imaginary part of…
Temperature-dependent, in-plane, thermoelectric power data are presented for single crystals of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, 0\leqx\leq0.05, and Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2, (0\leqx\leq0.171). Given that previous thermoelectric power and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 delineated a rather large Co-concentration range for Lifshitz transitions to occur, and the underdoped side of the phase diagram is poorly explored, new measurements of thermoelectric power on tightly spaced concentrations of Co, 0\leqx\leq0.05, were carried out. The data suggest evidence of a Lifshitz transition…
The biaxially textured growth of superconducting Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films has been realized on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) MgO coated conductor templates by employing an iron buffer architecture. The iron pnictide coated conductor showed a superconducting transition temperature of 21.5 K, which is slightly lower than that of Co-doped Ba-122 films on single crystalline MgO substrates. A self-field critical current density of over 10^5 A/cm2 has already been achieved even at 8 K. The current experiment highlights the potential of possible coated conductor applications of the…
Studies of the copper-based superconductors demonstrate how their phase diagram becomes more complex as experimental probes improve, able to distinguish among subtly different electronic phases. One of those phases, nematicity, has become the matter of great interest also in the iron-based superconductors, where it is detected deep in the tetragonal state. Here we present the evolution of the in-plane Nernst effect anisotropy in the strain detwinned Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals, whose behaviour can be explained within the approach developed to describe the nematic order parameter in liquid…
Platelet-like single crystals of the Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 series having lateral dimensions up to 15 mm and thickness up to 0.5 mm were obtained from the high temperature solution growth technique using Sn flux. Upon Co doping, the c-axis of the tetragonal unit cell decreases, while the a-axis shows a less significant variation. Pristine CaFe2As2 shows a combined spin-density-wave and structural transition near T = 166 K which gradually shifts to lower temperatures and splits with increasing Co-doping. Both transitions terminate abruptly at a critical Co-concentration of xc = 0.075. For x \geq 0.05…
We report on the determination of the electronic heat capacity of a slightly overdoped (x = 0.075) Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal with a Tc of 21.4 K. Our analysis of the temperature dependence of the superconducting-state specific heat provides strong evidence for a two-band s-wave order parameter with gap amplitudes 2D1(0)/kBTc=1.9 and 2D2(0)/kBTc=4.4. Our result is consistent with the recently predicted s+- order parameter [I. I. Mazin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 057003 (2008)].
Here we report the synthesis and basic characterization of LaFe1-xCoxAsO for several values of x. The parent phase LaFeAsO orders antiferromagnetically (TN ~ 145 K). Replacing Fe with Co is expected to both electron dope the system and introduce disorder in the FeAs layer. For x = 0.05 antiferromagnetic order is destroyed and superconductivity is observed at Tconset = 11.2 K. For x = 0.11 superconductivity is observed at Tc(onset) = 14.3 K, and for x = 0.15 Tc = 6.0 K. Superconductivity is not observed for x = 0.2 and 0.5, but for x = 1, the material appears to be ferromagnetic (Tc ~ 56 K) as …
