An proof of Poincare Duality with local coefficients and with compact support is provided. The proof does not require Sheaf Theory or anything equivalent and is thus more accessible for the general audience.
We extend Hendriks' classification theorem and Turaev's realisation and splitting theorems for Poincare duality complexes in dimension three to the relative case of Poincare duality pairs. The results for Poincare duality complexes are recovered by restricting the results to the case of Poincare duality pairs with empty boundary. Up to oriented homotopy equivalence, three-dimensional Poincare duality pairs are classified by their fundamental triple consisting of the fundamental group system, the orientation character and the image of the fundamental class under the classifying map. Using the d…
We describe an algebraic structure on chain complexes yielding algebraic models which classify homotopy types of Poincare duality complexes of dimension 4. Generalizing Turaev's fundamental triples of Poincare duality complexes of dimension 3, we introduce fundamental triples for Poincare duality complexes of dimension n > 2 and show that two Poincare duality complexes are orientedly homotopy equivalent if and only if their fundamental triples are isomorphic. As applications we establish a conjecture of Turaev and obtain a criterion for the existence of degree 1 maps between n-dimensional mani…
We prove that every commutative differential graded algebra whose cohomology is a simply-connected Poincare duality algebra is quasi-isomorphic to one whose underlying algebra is simply-connected and satisfies Poincare duality in the same dimension. This has application in particular to the study of CDGA models of configuration spaces on a closed manifold.
Intersection homology with coefficients in a field restores Poincaré duality for some spaces with singularities, as pseudomanifolds. But, with coefficients in a ring, the behaviours of manifolds and pseudomanifolds are different. This work is an overview, with proofs and explicit examples, of various possible situations with their properties. We first set up a duality, defined from a cap product, between two intersection cohomologies: the first one arises from a linear dual and the second one from a simplicial blow up. Moreover, from this property, Poincaré duality in intersection homology loo…
Greenlees and Sadofsky showed that the classifying spaces of finite groups are self-dual with respect to Morava K-theory K(n). Their duality map was constructed using a transfer map. We generalize their duality map and prove a K(n)-version of Poincare duality for classifying spaces of orbifolds. By regarding these classifying spaces as the homotopy types of certain differentiable stacks, our construction can be viewed as a stack version of Spanier-Whitehead type construction. Some examples and calculations will be given at the end.
Methods are developed to relate the action of a principal fibration to relative Whitehead products in order to determine the homotopy type of certain spaces. The methods are applied to thoroughly analyze the homotopy type of the based loops on certain cell attachments. Key examples are (n-1)-connected Poincare Duality complexes of dimension 2n or 2n+1 with minor cohomological conditions.
Let G=S^1, G=Z/p or more generally G be a finite p group, where p is an odd prime number. If G acts on a space whose cohomology ring satisfies Poincare duality (with appropriate coefficients k), we prove a mod 4 congruence between the total Betti number of X^G and a number which depends only on the k[G]-module structure of H^*(X;k). This improves the well known mod 2 congruences that hold for actions on general spaces.

Baues and Bleille showed that, up to oriented homotopy equivalence, a Poincare duality complex of dimension $n \ge 3$ with $(n-2)$-connected universal cover, is classified by its fundamental group, orientation class and the image of its fundamental class in the homology of the fundamental group. We generalise Turaev's results for the case $n=3$, by providing necessary and sufficient conditions for a triple $(G, ω, μ)$, comprising a group, $G$, $ω\in H^{1}(G;\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})$ and $μ\in H_{3}(G, \mathbb{Z}^ω)$ to be realised by a Poincaré duality complex of dimension $n$ with $(n-2)$-conn…
We generalize the nonabelian Poincare duality theorems of Salvatore in [Sal01] and Lurie in [Lur09] to the case of not necessarily grouplike E_n-algebras (in the category of spaces). We define a stabilization procedure based on McDuff's "brining points in from infinity" maps from [McD75]. For open connected parallelizable n-manifolds, we prove that, after stabilizing, the topological chiral homology of M with coefficients in an E_n-algebra A, is homology equivalent to Map^c(M,B^n A), the space of compactly supported maps to the n-fold classifying space of A. The two models of topological chira…
If $G$ is a group which admits a manifold model for $\mathrm{B}G$ then $G$ is a Poincaré duality group. We study a generalisation of Poincaré duality groups, introduced initially by Davis and Leary, motivated by groups $G$ with cocompact manifold models $M$ for $\underline{\mathrm{E}}G$ where $M^H$ is a contractible submanifold for all finite subgroups $H$ of $G$. We give several sources of examples and constructions of these Bredon-Poincaré duality groups, including using the equivariant reflection group trick of Davis and Leary to construct examples of Bredon-Poincaré duality groups arising …
The paper gives a review of progress towards extending the Thurston programme to the Poincare duality case. For a full abstract, see the published version at the above link.
Luc Menichi showed that the BV algebras on $H^\bullet(LS^2;Z_2)[-2]$ coming from string topology and the one on $HH^\bullet(H^\bullet(S^2;Z_2),H^\bullet(S^2;Z_2))$ using Poincaré duality on $H^\bullet(S^2;Z_2)$ are not isomorphic. In this note we show how one can obtain the string topology BV algebra on Hochschild cohomology using a Poincaré duality structure with higher homotopies. This Poincaré duality (with higher homotopies) on cohomology is induced by a local Poincaré duality (with higher homotopies) on the cochain level.
In this paper we address the relation between the orbifold fundamental group and the topology of the underlying space. In particular, under the assumption that the orbifold fundamental group is equal to the fundamental group of the underlying space, we prove Poincaré Duality for orbifolds of dimension 4 and 5.
In a previous paper, math.AT/0304079, Auslander-Reiten triangles and quivers were introduced into algebraic topology. This paper shows that over a Poincare duality space, each component of the Auslander-Reiten quiver is isomorphic to ZA_{\infty}.
The connective ku-(co)homology of elementary abelian 2-groups is determined as a functor of the elementary abelian 2-group. The argument requires only the calculation of the rank one case and the Atiyah-Segal theorem for KU-cohomology together with an analysis of the functorial structure of the integral group ring. The methods can also be applied to the odd primary case. These results are used to analyse the local cohomology spectral sequence calculating ku-homology, via a functorial version of local duality for Koszul complexes. This gives a conceptual explanation of results of Bruner and Gre…
Fix a finite group G and an n-dimensional orthogonal G-representation V. We define the equivariant factorization homology of a V-framed smooth G-manifold with coefficients in an $E_V$-algebra using a two-sided bar construction, generalizing [And10, KM18]. This construction uses minimal categorical background and aims for maximal concreteness, allowing convenient proofs of key properties, including invariance of equivariant factorization homology under change of tangential structures. Using a geometrically-seen scanning map, we prove an equivariant version (eNPD) of the nonabelian Poincare dual…
We show that intersection homology extends Poincare duality to manifold homotopically stratified spaces (satisfying mild restrictions). This includes showing that, on such spaces, the sheaf of singular intersection chains is quasi-isomorphic to the Deligne sheaf.
For a Poincare duality space X and a map X -> B, consider the homotopy fiber product X x^B X. If X is orientable with respect to a multiplicative cohomology theory E, then, after suitably regrading, it is shown that the E-homology of X x^B X has the structure of a graded associative algebra. When X -> B is the diagonal map of a manifold X, one recovers a result of Chas and Sullivan about the homology of the free loop space LX.
We define and study a class of finite topological spaces, which model the cell structure of a space obtained by gluing finitely many Euclidean convex polyhedral cells along congruent faces. We call these finite topological spaces, combinatorial cell complexes (or c.c.c). We define orientability, homology and cohomology of c.c.c's and develop enough algebraic topology in this setting to prove the Poincare duality theorem for a c.c.c satisfying suitable regularity conditions. The definitions and proofs are completely finitary and combinatorial in nature.
We show that the complex $C_\bullet X$ of rational simplicial chains on a compact and triangulated Poincaré duality space $X$ of dimension $d$ is an A$_\infty$ coalgebra with $\infty$ duality. This is the structure required for an A$_\infty$ version of the cyclic Deligne conjecture. One corollary is that the shifted Hochschild cohomology $HH^{\bullet+d} (C^\bullet X, C_\bullet X)$ of the cochain algebra $C^\bullet X$ with values in $C_\bullet X$ has a BV structure. This implies, if $X$ is moreover simply connected, that the shifted homology $H_{\bullet+d}LX$ of the free loop space admits a BV …
Let K be a connected finite complex. This paper studies the problem of whether one can attach a cell to some iterated suspension S^j K so that the resulting space satisfies Poincare duality. When this is possible, we say that S^j K is a spine. We introduce the notion of quadratic self duality and show that if K is quadratically self dual, then S^j K is a spine whenever j is a suitable power of two. The powers of two come from the James periodicity theorem. We briefly explain how our main results, considered up to bordism, give a new interpretation of the four-fold periodicity of the surgery ob…
We construct periodic families of Poincare complexes, partially solving a question of Hodgson that was posed in the proceedings of the 1982 Northwestern homotopy theory conference. We also construct infinite families of Poincare complexes whose top cell falls off after one suspension but which fail to embed in a sphere of codimension one. We give a homotopy theoretic description of the four-fold periodicity in knot cobordism.
Let M be a Poincare duality space of dimension at least four. In this paper we describe a complete obstruction to realizing the diagonal map M -> M x M by a Poincare embedding. The obstruction group depends only on the fundamental group and the parity of the dimension of M.
The singular cochain complex of a topological space is a classical object. It is a Differential Graded algebra which has been studied intensively with a range of methods, not least within rational homotopy theory. More recently, the tools of Auslander-Reiten theory have also been applied to the singular cochain complex. One of the highlights is that by these methods, each Poincare duality space gives rise to a Calabi-Yau category. This paper is a review of the theory.
Let $A$ be a Koszul Calabi-Yau algebra. We show that there exists an isomorphism of Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras between the Hochschild cohomology ring of $A$ and that of its Koszul dual algebra $A^!$. This confirms (a generalization of) a conjecture of R.~Rouquier.
We define a space of relative embedded thickenings of a given map from a finite complex to a Poincare Duality space, and show that there is a highly connected stabilization map between such spaces induced by fiberwise suspension. As a result, we obtain a generalization to the Poincare Duality category of a smooth stabilization theorem of Connolly and Williams.
Let G be a Poincare duality group of dimension n. For a given element g in G, let C_g denote its centralizer subgroup. Let L_G be the graded abelian group defined by (L_G)_p = oplus_{[g]}H_{p+n}(C_g) where the sum is taken over conjugacy classes of elements in G. In this paper we construct a multiplication on L_G directly in terms of intersection products on the centralizers. This multiplication makes L_G a graded, associative, commutative algebra. When G is the fundamental group of an aspherical, closed oriented n manifold M, then (L_G)_* = H_{*+n}(LM), where LM is the free loop space of M. W…
We study the cohomology properties of the singular foliation $\F$ determined by an action $Φ\colon G \times M\to M$ where the abelian Lie group $G$ preserves a riemannian metric on the compact manifold $M$. More precisely, we prove that the basic intersection cohomology $\lau{\IH}{*}{\per{p}}{\mf}$ is finite dimensional and verifies the Poincaré Duality. This duality includes two well-known situations: -- Poincaré Duality for basic cohomology (the action $Φ$ is almost free). -- Poincaré Duality for intersection cohomology (the group $G$ is compact and connected).
