We employ the exponentially improved asymptotic expansions of the confluent hypergeometric functions on the Stokes lines discussed by the author [Appl. Math. Sci. {\bf 7} (2013) 6601--6609] to give the analogous expansions of the modified Bessel functions $I_ν(z)$ and $K_ν(z)$ for large $z$ and finite $ν$ on $\arg\,z=\pmπ$ (and, in the case of $I_ν(z)$, also on $\arg\,z=0$). Numerical results are presented to illustrate the accuracy of these expansions.
Through the theory of Jack polynomials we give an iterative method for integral formula of Dunkl-Bessel functions of type $A_{N-1}$ and a partial product formula for it.
We investigate the integral \[\int_0^\infty \cosh^μ\!t\,K_ν(z\cosh t)\,dt \qquad \Re(z)>0,\] where $K$ denotes the modified Bessel function, for non-negative integer values of the parameters $μ$ and $ν$. When the integers are of different parity, closed-form expressions are obtained in terms of $z^{-1}e^{-z}$ multiplied by a polynomial in $z^{-1}$ of degree dependent on the sign of $μ-ν$.
We consider a generalisation of a definite integral involving the Bessel function of the first kind. It is shown that this integral can be expressed in terms of the Fox-Wright function ${}_pΨ_q(z)$ of one variable. Some consequences of this representation are explored by suitable choice of parameters. In addition, two closed-form evaluations of infinite series of the Fox-Wright function are deduced.
We examine the sum of modified Bessel functions with argument depending quadratically on the summation index given by \[S_ν(a)=\sum_{n\geq 1} (\frac{1}{2} an^2)^{-ν} K_ν(an^2)\qquad (|\arg\,a|<π/2)\] as the parameter $|a|\to 0$. It is shown that the positive real $a$-axis is a Stokes line, where an infinite number of increasingly subdominant exponentially small terms present in the asymptotic expansion undergo a smooth, but rapid, transition as this ray is crossed. Particular attention is devoted to the details of the expansion on the Stokes line as $a\to 0$ through positive values. Numerical …
The aim of this paper is to derive new representations for the Hankel and Bessel functions, exploiting the reformulation of the method of steepest descents by M. V. Berry and C. J. Howls (Berry and Howls, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 434 (1991) 657--675). Using these representations, we obtain a number of properties of the large order asymptotic expansions of the Hankel and Bessel functions due to Debye, including explicit and realistic error bounds, asymptotics for the late coefficients, exponentially improved asymptotic expansions, and the smooth transition of the Stokes discontinuities.
We demonstrate how the asymptotics for large $|z|$ of the generalised Bessel function \[{}_0Ψ_1(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{z^n}{Γ(an+b) n!},\] where $a>-1$ and $b$ is any number (real or complex), may be obtained by exploiting the well-established asymptotic theory of the generalised Wright function ${}_pΨ_q(z)$. A summary of this theory is given and an algorithm for determining the coefficients in the associated exponential expansions is discussed in an appendix. We pay particular attention to the case $a=-1/2$, where the expansion for $z\to\pm\infty$ consists of an exponentially small contrib…
In this note, we shall prove a formula for the Fourier transform of spherical Bessel functions over complex numbers, viewed as the complex analogue of the classical formulae of Hardy and Weber. The formula has strong representation theoretic motivations in the Waldspurger correspondence over the complex field.
In this note our aim is to point out that certain inequalities for modified Bessel functions of the first and second kind, deduced recently by Laforgia and Natalini, are in fact equivalent to the corresponding Turán type inequalities for these functions. Moreover, we present some new Turán type inequalities for the aforementioned functions and we show that their product is decreasing as a function of the order, which has application in the study of stability of radially symmetric solutions in a generalized FitzHugh-Nagumo equation in two spatial dimensions. At the end of this note a conjecture…
In this note we apply a modified fractional Bessel differential equation to the problem of describing corneal topography. We find the solution in terms of the power series. This solution has an interesting behavior at infinity which is a generalization of the classical results for modified Bessel function of order 0. Our model fits the real corneal geometry data with an error of order of a few per cent.
The aim of this paper is to derive new representations for the Hankel functions, the Bessel functions and their derivatives, exploiting the reformulation of the method of steepest descents by M. V. Berry and C. J. Howls (Berry and Howls, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 434 (1991) 657--675). Using these representations, we obtain a number of properties of the asymptotic expansions of the Hankel and Bessel functions and their derivatives of nearly equal order and argument, including explicit and numerically computable error bounds, asymptotics for the late coefficients, exponentially improved asymptotic e…
In this note we offer some log-concavity properties of certain functions related to Bessel functions of the first kind and modified Bessel functions of the first and second kind, by solving partially a recent conjecture on the log-convexity/log-concavity properties for modified Bessel functions of the first kind and their derivatives. Moreover, we give an application of the mentioned results by extending two inequalities of van der Corput to Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind. Similar inequalities are proved also for modified Bessel functions of the second kind, as well as …
In this note our aim is to present some monotonicity properties of the product of modified Bessel functions of first and second kind. Certain bounds for the product of modified Bessel functions of first and second kind are also obtained. These bounds improve and extend known bounds for the product of modified Bessel functions of first and second kind of order zero. A new Turán type inequality is also given for the product of modified Bessel functions, and some open problems are stated, which may be of interest for further research.
The modified Bessel function of the second kind $K_{iν}(x)$ of imaginary order for fixed $x>0$ possesses a countably infinite sequence of real zeros. Recently it has been shown that the $n$th zero behaves like $ν_n\sim πn/\log\,n$ as $n\to\infty$. In this note we determine a more precise estimate for the bahaviour of these zeros for large $n$ by making use of the known asymptotic expansion of $K_{iν}(x)$ for large $ν$. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the expansion obtained.
In this note our aim is to deduce some new monotonicity properties for a special combination of Bessel functions of the first kind by using a recently developed Mittag-Leffler expansion for the derivative of a normalized Bessel function of the first kind. These monotonicity properties are used to obtain some new inequalities for Bessel functions of the first kind.
In this note our aim is to determine the radius of starlikeness of the normalized Bessel functions of the first kind for three different kinds of normalization. The key tool in the proof of our main result is the Mittag-Leffler expansion for Bessel functions of the first kind and the fact that, according to Ismail and Muldoon [IM2], the smallest positive zeros of some Dini functions are less than the first positive zero of the Bessel function of the first kind.
We produce a new proof of Tao's result on the slightly supercritical Navier Stokes equations. Our proof has the advantage that it works in the plane while Tao's proof works only in dimensions three and higher. We accomplish this by studying the problem as a system of differential inequalities on the $L^2$ norms of the Littlewood Paley decomposition, along the lines of Pavlovic's proof of the Beale-Kato-Majda theorem.
New index transforms, involving the real part of the modified Bessel function of the first kind as the kernel are considered. Mapping properties such as the boundedness and invertibility are investigated for these operators in the Lebesgue spaces. Inversion theorems are proved. As an interesting application, a solution of the initial value problem for the second order partial differential equation, involving the Laplacian, is obtained. It is noted, that the corresponding operators with the imaginary part of the modified Bessel function of the first kind lead to the familiar Kontorovich- Lebede…
In this note, we express explicitly the Dunkl kernel and generalized Bessel functions of type $A_{n-1}$ by the Humbert's function $Φ_{2}^{(n)}$, with one variable specified. The obtained formulas lead to a new proof of Xu's integral expression for the intertwining operator associated to symmetric groups, which was recently reported in [21].
In these notes we will present (a part of) the parabolic tent spaces theory and then apply it in solving some PDE's originated from the fluid mechanics. In more details, to our most interest are the incompressible homogeneous Navier-Stokes equations. These equations have been investigated mathematically for almost one century. Yet, the question of proving well-posedness (i.e. existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions) lacks satisfactory answer. A large part of the known positive results in connection with Navier-Stokes equations are those in which the initial data $u_0$ is supposed to …
