We perform the calculation of the dc resistivity as a function of temperature of the "strange-metal" state that emerges in the vicinity of a spin-density-wave phase transition in the presence of weak disorder. This scenario is relevant to the phenomenology of many important correlated materials, such as, e.g., the pnictides, the heavy-fermion compounds and the cuprates. To accomplish this task, we implement the memory-matrix approach that allows the calculation of the transport coefficients of the model beyond the quasiparticle paradigm. Our computation is also inspired by the $ε=3-d$ expansion in a hot-spot model embedded in $d$-space dimensions recently put forth by Sur and Lee [Phys. Rev. B 91, 125136 (2015)], in which they find a new low-energy non-Fermi liquid fixed point that is perturbatively accessible near three dimensions. As a consequence, we are able to establish here the temperature and doping dependence of the electrical resistivity at intermediate temperatures of a two-dimensional disordered antiferromagnetic metallic model with a composite operator that couples the order-parameter fluctuations to the entire Fermi surface. We argue that our present theory provides a good basis in order to unify the experimental transport data, e.g., in the cuprates and the pnictide superconductors, within a wide range of doping regimes.
Anisotropic resistivities of Bi_2Sr_2Ca_{1-x}Er_xCu_2O_8 single crystals were measured and analyzed from 4.2 to 500 K with special interest in the parent antiferromagnetic insulator of x=1.0. Although the resistivity is semiconducting along both the in- and out-of-plane directions, the temperature dependence is found to be significantly different. As a result, the resistivity ratio for x=1.0 takes a broad maximum near room temperature. The electric conduction in parent antiferromagnetic insulators is different from other semiconductors, and is as unconventional as that in high-temperature supe…
We theoretically examine anisotropy of in-plane resistivity in the striped antiferromagnetic phase of an iron arsenide superconductor by applying a memory function approach to the ordered phase with isotropic nonmagnetic impurity. We find that the anisotropy of the scattering rate is independent of carrier density when the topology of the Fermi surface is changed after the introduction of holes. On the other hand, the anisotropy of the Drude weight monotonically decreases reflecting the distortion of the Dirac Fermi surface and eventually leads to the reverse of anisotropy of resistivity, bein…
We systematically investigated the anisotropic in-plane resistivity of the iron telluride including three kinds of impurity atoms: excess Fe, Se substituted for Te, and Cu substituted for Fe. Sizable resistivity anisotropy was found in the magneto-structurally ordered phase whereas the sign is opposite ($ρ_a$ $>$ $ρ_b$, where the $b$-axis parameter is shorter than the $a$-axis one) to that observed in the transition-metal doped iron arsenides ($ρ_a$ $<$ $ρ_b$). On the other hand, our results demonstrate that the magnitude of the resistivity anisotropy in the iron tellurides is correlated with …
Motivated by a recent experimental report on in-plane anisotropic resistivity in the double-striped antiferromagnetic phase of FeTe, we theoretically calculate in-plane resistivity by applying a memory function approach to the ordered phase. We find that the resistivity is larger along an antiferromagnetically ordered direction than along a ferromagnetically ordered one, consistent with experimental observation. The anisotropic results are mainly contributed from Drude weight, whose behavior is attributed to Fermi surface topology of the ordered phase.
We investigated the in-plane resistivity anisotropy for underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with improved quality. We demonstrate that the anisotropy in resistivity in the magnetostructural ordered phase arises from the anisotropy in the residual component which increases in proportion to the Co concentration $x$. This gives evidence that the anisotropy originates from the impurity scattering by Co atoms substituted for the Fe sites, rather than so far proposed mechanism such as the anisotropy of Fermi velocities of reconstructed Fermi surface pockets. As doping proceeds …
We report the temperature dependence of resistivity (rho) and Hall coefficient (R_H) in the normal state of homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films with kFl~3.27-10.12. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of these films varies from 8.13K to 16.8K. While our least disordered film displays usual metallic behavior, for all the films with kFl<8.13, both and are negative up to 300K. We observe that R_H(T) varies linearly with rho(T) for all the films. Measurements performed on a 2nm thick Be film shows similar behavior >. This behavior is inconsistent with existing theories of…
Systematic analysis of the planar resistivity, Hall effect and cotangent of the Hall angle for the electron-doped cuprates reveals underlying Fermi-liquid behavior even deep in the antiferromagnetic part of the phase diagram. The transport scattering rate exhibits a quadratic temperature dependence, and is nearly independent of doping, compound and carrier type (electrons vs. holes), and hence universal. Our analysis moreover indicates that the material-specific resistivity upturn at low temperatures and low doping has the same origin in both electron- and hole-doped cuprates.
The resistivity $ρ$ and Hall resistivity $ρ_H$ are measured on FeSe at pressures up to $P$ = 28.3 kbar in magnetic fields up to $B$ = 14.5 T. The $ρ(B)$ and $ρ_H(B)$ curves are analyzed with multicarrier models to estimate the carrier density and mobility as a function of $P$ and temperature ($ T\leqslant$ 110 K). It is shown that the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition is accompanied by an abrupt reduction of the carrier density and scattering. This indicates that the electronic structure is reconstructed significantly by the antiferromagnetic order.
The bicollinear antiferromagnetic order experimentally observed in FeTe is shown to be stabilized by the coupling $\tilde g_{12}$ between monoclinic lattice distortions and the spin-nematic order parameter with $B_{\rm 2g}$ symmetry, within a three-orbital spin-fermion model studied with Monte Carlo techniques. A finite but small value of $\tilde g_{12}$ is required, with a concomitant lattice distortion compatible with experiments, and a tetragonal-monoclinic transition strongly first order. Remarkably, the bicollinear state found here displays a planar resistivity with the "reversed" puzzlin…
We study a quantum particle coupled to hard-core bosons and propagating on disordered ladders with $R$ legs. The particle dynamics is studied with the help of rate equations for the boson-assisted transitions between the Anderson states. We demonstrate that for finite $R < \infty$ and sufficiently strong disorder the dynamics is subdiffusive, while the two-dimensional planar systems with $R\to \infty$ appear to be diffusive for arbitrarily strong disorder. The transition from diffusive to subdiffusive regimes may be identified via statistical fluctuations of resistivity. The corresponding dist…
We study the electrical resistivity in the quantum Griffiths phase associated with the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition in a metal. The resistivity is calculated by means of the semi-classical Boltzmann equation. We show that the scattering of electrons by locally ordered rare regions leads to a singular temperature dependence. The rare-region contribution to the resistivity varies as $T^λ$ with temperature $T,$ where the $λ$ is the usual Griffiths exponent which takes the value zero at the critical point and increases with distance from criticality. We find similar singular contribu…
We present a detailed study of RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy) single crystals by measurements of stoichiometry and temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and electrical resistivity. This series forms with partial Ni occupancy as well as a variable Bi occupancy. For R = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy, the RNi1-xBi2+-y compounds show local-moment like behavior and order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Determination of anisotropies as well as antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures for RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy) have been made. Although crystalline samples from t…
We report magnetoresistance and Hall Effect results for electron-doped films of the high-temperature superconductor La$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (LCCO) for temperatures from 0.7 to 45 K and magnetic fields up to 65 T. For x = 0.12 and 0.13, just below the Fermi surface reconstruction (FSR), the normal state in-plane resistivity exhibits a well-known upturn at low temperature. Our new results show that this resistivity upturn is eliminated at high magnetic field and the resistivity becomes linear-in-temperature from $\sim$ 40 K down to 0.7 K. The magnitude of the linear coefficient scales with Tc an…
We report the detailed study of the influence of the spin and valley splittings on such physical observables of the two-dimensional disordered electron liquid as resistivity, spin and valley susceptibilities. We explain qualitatively the nonmonotonic dependence of the resistivity with temperature in the presence of a parallel magnetic field. In the presence of either the spin splitting or the valley splitting we predict novel, with two maximum points, temperature dependence of the resistivity.
Interplay between Kondo effect and trends to antiferromagnetic and spin glass ordering in perfect and disordered bipartite Kondo lattices is considered. Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived from the microscopic effective action written in three mode representation (Kondo screening, antiferromagnetic correlations and spin liquid correlations). The problem of local constraint is resolved by means of Popov-Fedotov representation for localized spin operators. It is shown that the Kondo screening enhances the trend to a spin liquid crossover and suppresses antiferromagnetic ordering in perfect Kondo…
Bi3Mn4O12(NO3), in which the Mn4+ ions carry S=3/2, is the first honeycomb lattice system that shows no long-range magnetic order. Using neutron scattering, we have determined that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop at low temperatures. Applied magnetic fields induce a magnetic transition, in which the short-range order abruptly expands into a long-range order.
We report the results of dc and ac magnetization measurements as a function of temperature (1.8 - 300 K) for the spin chain compound, Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$, which has been recently reported to exhibit a partially disordered antiferromagnetic (PDAF) structure in the range 30 - 90 K and spin-glass freezing below 30 K. We observe an unexpectedly large frequency dependence of ac susceptibility in the T range 30 - 90 K, typical of superparamagnets. In addition, we find that there is no difference in the isothermal remanent magnetization behavior for the two regimes below 90 K. These findings call for mor…
Resistivity, magnetization and microscopic $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of the iron-based superconductor parent material CaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibit anomalous features that are consistent with the collective freezing of domain walls. Below $T^*\approx 10$ K, the resistivity exhibits a peak and downturn, the bulk magnetization exhibits a sharp increase, and $^{75}$As NMR measurements reveal the presence of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field. These features in both the charge and spin response are strongly field dependent, ar…
The scaling of $H$-linear magnetoresistance in field and temperature was measured in under-doped (x = 0.19) and optimally-doped (x=0.31)~BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. We analyze the data based on an orbital model in the presence of strongly anisotropic quasiparticle spectra and scattering time due to antiferromagnetism. The magnetoresistance is dominated by the properties of small regions of the Fermi surface called `hot spots' where antiferromagnetic excitations induce a large quasiparticle scattering rate. Approximate temperature-magnetic field scaling relations are derived and shown to be …
Ternary iron arsenide EuFe$_2$As$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure has been studied by magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, thermopower, Hall and specific heat measurements. The compound undergoes two magnetic phase transitions at about 200 K and 20 K, respectively. The former was found to be accompanied with a slight drop in magnetic susceptibility (after subtracting the Curie-Weiss paramagnetic contribution), a rapid decrease in resistivity, a large jump in thermopower and a sharp peak in specific heat with decreasing temperature, all of which point to a spin-density-wave-like antiferr…
The conductivity of the two-dimensional Hubbard model is particularly relevant for high-temperature superconductors. Vertex corrections are expected to be important because of strongly momentum dependent self-energies. We use the Two-Particle Self-Consistent approach that satisfies crucial constraints such as the Mermin-Wagner theorem, the Pauli principle and sum rules in order to reach non-perturbative regimes. This approach is reliable from weak to intermediate coupling. A functional derivative approach ensures that vertex corrections are included in a way that satisfies the f sum-rule. The …
The electrical resistivity of several relatively clean metallic ferromagnets, as well as the helimagnet MnSi, is commonly observed to exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures. This behavior, which is found in both ordered and disordered phases, and both near and away from the magnetic transition, remains a major unsolved problem. We derive and discuss three novel mechanisms underlying such behavior that are based on electron scattering mediated by the exchange of (1) ferromagnons or (2) skyrmionic fluctuations, both in conjunction with weak disorder, or (3) helimagnons in clean sy…
We show that the interference between scattering by impurities and by critical spin fluctuations gives rise to anisotropic transport in the Ising-nematic state of the iron pnictides. The effect is closely related to the non-Fermi liquid behavior of the resistivity near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. Our theory not only explains the observed sign of the resistivity anisotropy $Δρ$ in electron doped systems, but also predicts a sign change of $Δρ$ upon sufficient hole doping. Furthermore, our model naturally addresses the changes in $Δρ$ upon sample annealing and alkaline-earth sub…
An exhaustive investigation of metallic electronic transport and superconductivity of organic superconductors (TMTSF)_2PF_6 and (TMTSF)_2ClO_4 in the Pressure-Temperature phase diagram between T=0 and 20 K and a theoretical description based on the weak coupling renormalization group method are reported. The analysis of the data reveals a high temperature domain (T\approx 20 K) in which a regular T^2 electron-electron Umklapp scattering obeys a Kadowaki-Woods law and a low temperature regime (T< 8 K) where the resistivity is dominated by a linear-in temperature component. In both compounds a c…
The low-temperature transport properties (resistivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric power) are experimentally investigated for the compound YbMn2Sb2. Large Seebeck coefficient and nearly linear temperature dependence of resistivity are obtained. The thermal conductivity is large and has mainly phonon origin. Appreciable anomalies of transport characteristics near the antiferromagnetic transition point are found. Possible influence of pseudo-Kondo scattering is discussed.
We present a theory of the magnetotransport in weakly disordered metals close to an antiferromagnetic quantum-critical point. The anisotropic scattering from critical spin fluctuations is strongly influenced by weak but isotropic scattering from small amounts of disorder. This leads to a large regime where the resistivity obeys a scaling form rho=rho_0+Delta rho = rho_0+T^{3/2} f(T/ρ_0,(p-p_c)/rho_0,B/rho_0^{3/2}), where rho_0 is the residual resistivity, B the magnetic field and p-p_c>0 measures the distance from the quantum-critical point on the paramagnetic side of the phase diagram. Orbita…
NaV2O4 crystals were grown under high pressure using a NaCl flux, and the crystals were characterized with X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization. The structure of NaV2O4 consists of double chains of edge-sharing VO6 octahedra. The resistivity is highly anisotropic, with the resistivity perpendicular to the chains more than 20 times greater than that parallel to the chains. Magnetically, the intrachain interactions are ferromagnetic and the interchain interactions are antiferromagnetic; 3D antiferromagnetic order is established at 140 K. First principles el…
In addition to the well known ferromagnetism, double perovskites are also expected to exhibit antiferromagnetic (AF) order driven by electron delocalisation. This has been seen in model Hamiltonian studies and confirmed via ab initio calculations. The AF phases should occur, for example, on sufficient electron doping of materials like Sr_2FeMoO_6 (SFMO) via La substitution for Sr. Clear experimental indication of such AF order is limited, possibly because of increase in antisite disorder with La doping on SFMO, although intriguing signatures of non ferromagnetic behaviour are seen. We study th…
MnBi2Te4 has attracted tremendous research interest recently as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator. It undergoes a long-range AF order at TN = 24 K accompanied with a cusp-like anomaly in the metallic resistivity. Here, we studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure on its electrical transport properties up to 12.5 GPa by using a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that TN determined from the resistivity anomaly first increases slightly with pressure and then decreases until vanished completely at ~7 GPa. Intriguingly, its resistivity rho(T) is enhanced gradually b…
Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the antiferromagnetic phase transition that is induced by the Zeeman field in a disordered interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermion system. At a fixed interaction strength $U$, the antiferromagnetic correlation is enhanced as the magnetic filed increases, and when the magnetic field is larger than a $B_{c}(U)$, the antiferromagnetic correlation shall be suppressed by the increased magnetic field. The impact of Zeeman field $B$, Coulomb repulsion $U$ and disorder $Δ$ is not isolated. The intensity of magnetic field effect on the …
The spin-fermion model has long been used to describe the quantum-critical behavior of 2d electron systems near an antiferromagnetic (AFM) instability. Recently, the standard procedure to integrate out the fermions to obtain an effective action for spin waves has been questioned in the clean case. We show that in the presence of disorder, the single fermion loops display two crossover scales: upon lowering the energy, the singularities of the clean fermionic loops are first cut off, but below a second scale new singularities arise that lead again to marginal scaling. In addition, impurity line…
The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of the heterostructures consisting of single crystalline LaMnO$_3$ samples with different crystallographic orientations covered by the epitaxial ferroelectric Ba$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$TiO$_3$ film has been studied. Results obtained for the heterostructure have been compared with the electrical resistivity of the single crystalline LaMnO$_3$ without the film. It was found that for the samples with the films where the polarization axis is perpendicular to the crystal surface the electrical resistivity strongly decreases, and at the temperature …
Stoichiometric Sr2IrO4 is a ferromagnetic Jeff = 1/2 Mott insulator driven by strong spin-orbit coupling. Introduction of very dilute oxygen vacancies into single-crystal Sr2IrO4-delta with delta < 0.04 leads to significant changes in lattice parameters and an insulator-to-metal transition at TMI = 105 K. The highly anisotropic electrical resistivity of the low-temperature metallic state for delta ~ 0.04 exhibits anomalous properties characterized by non-Ohmic behavior and an abrupt current-induced transition in the resistivity at T* = 52 K, which separates two regimes of resisitive switching …
The quasi-1D organic Bechgaard salt (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ displays spin-density-wave (SDW) order and superconductivity in close proximity in the temperature-pressure phase diagram. We have measured its normal-state electrical resistivity $ρ_a(T)$ as a function of temperature and pressure, in the $T \to 0$ limit. At the critical pressure where SDW order disappears, $ρ_a(T) \propto T$ down to the lowest measured temperature (0.1 K). With increasing pressure, $ρ_a(T)$ acquires a curvature that is well described by $ρ_a(T) = ρ_0 + AT + BT^2$, where the strength of the linear term, measured by the $A$ …
We report results of the first studies on the magnetic and transport properties of a new material CeNiBi_2. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a sharp peak at T_N = 6K, indicating an antiferromagnetic phase transition. This antiferromagnetic order below T_N is confirmed by magnetization measurement, which displays a metamagnetic-like transition at H_m = 5 T. Both low-temperature susceptibility and high-field magnetization are suggestive of strong crystalline-electric-field effect in CeNiBi_2. The electrical resistivity shows the presence of Kondo and crystal-field effects with a sharp drop b…
We have revealed new features in the out-of-plane resistivity rho_c of heavily underdoped RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (R=Tm,Lu) single crystals, which give evidence for two distinct mechanisms contributing the c-axis transport. We have observed a crossover towards "metal-like" (d rho_c/d T > 0) behavior at the temperature T_m which quickly increases with decreasing doping. The "metal-like" conductivity contribution dominates at T < T_m and provides a saturation of the resistivity anisotropy, rho_c / rho_{ab}. The antiferromagnetic ordering is found to block this "metal-like" part of the c-axis conductivi…
Cr0.68Se single crystals with two-dimensional (2D) character have been grown, and the detailed magnetization M(T), electrical transport properties (including longitudinal resistivity and Hall resistivity and thermal transport ones (including heat capacity Cp(T) and thermoelectric power (TEP) S(T)) have been measured. There are some interesting phenomena: (i) Cr0.68Se presents a non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconducting behavior with the Neel temperature TN = 42 K and the activated energy Eg=3.9 meV; (ii) It exhibits the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below TN and large negative magneto…
We report electrical and thermal transport properties of Mn-based material BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure. The resistivity of the antiferromagnetic BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ shows a metal-semiconductor transition at $\sim 80$ K with decreasing temperature. Correspondingly, the thermopower $S$ shows a peak at the same temperature, approaching ~150 $μ$V/K. With increasing temperature $S$ decreases to about 125 $μ$V/K at the room temperature. The magnetic field enhances the peak value to 210 $μ$V/K. The Hall resistivity reveals an abrupt change of the carrier density close to the metal-semicon…
The in-plane resistivity anisotropy has been studied with the Montgomery method on two detwinned parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors, NaFeAs and FeTe. For NaFeAs, the resistivity in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) direction is smaller than that in the ferromagnetic (FM) direction, similar to that observed in BaFe2As2 before. While for FeTe, the resistivity in the AFM direction is larger than that in the FM direction. We show that these two opposite resistivity anisotropy behaviors could be attributed to the strong Hund's rule coupling effects: while the iron pnictides are in the iti…
The in-plane normal-state resistivity of Zn-doped YBa2Cu3O7-d single crystals is measured down to low temperatures by suppressing superconductivity with magnetic fields up to 18 T. Substitution of Cu with Zn in the CuO2 planes is found to induce carrier localization at low temperatures in "clean" samples with kF l > 5, where the mean free path l is larger than the electron wave length and thus localization is not normally expected. The destruction of the local antiferromagnetic correlation among Cu spins by Zn is discussed to be the possible origin of this unusual charge localization.
We present a detailed study on the (magneto)transport properties of as-cast and heat treated material UCu$_4$Pd. We find a pronounced sample dependence of the resistivity $ρ$ of as-cast samples, and reproduce the annealing dependence of $ρ$. In our study of the Hall effect we determine a metallic carrier density for all samples, and a temperature dependence of the Hall constant which is inconsistent with the Skew scattering prediction. The magnetoresistive response is very small and characteristic for spin disorder scattering, suggesting that overall the resistivity is controlled mostly by non…
We determined the crystal structure of Cs$_2$LiRuCl$_6$, which was synthesized first in this work, and investigated its magnetic properties. Cs$_2$LiRuCl$_6$ has a hexagonal structure composed of linear chains of face-sharing RuCl$_6$ and LiCl$_6$ octahedra. In two-thirds of the structural chains, Ru$^{3+}$ and Li$^+$ sites are almost ordered, while in the other chains their sites are disordered. This situation is analogous to the ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice. Using electron paramagnetic resonance, we evaluated the $g$ factors of Ru$^{3+}$ with effe…
The electrical resistivity of the quasi-1D organic superconductor (TMTSF)2PF6 was recently measured at low temperature from the critical pressure needed to suppress the spin-density-wave state up to a pressure where superconductivity has almost disappeared. This data revealed a direct correlation between the onset of superconductivity at Tc and the strength of a non-Fermi-liquid linear term in the normal-state resistivity, going as r(T) = r0 + AT + BT2 at low temperature, so that A goes to 0 as Tc goes to 0. Here we show that the contribution of low-frequency antiferromagnetic fluctuations to …
A possible explanation is given for the anomalous $T^{3/2}$ temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of MnSi, which is observed in the high-pressure paramagnetic state. The unusual Fermi surface of MnSi includes large open sheets that intersect along the faces of the cubic Brillouin zone. Close to these intersections, long-wavelength interband magnetic spin fluctuations can scatter electrons from one sheet to the other. The current relaxation rate due to such interband scattering events is not reduced by vertex corrections as is that for scattering from intraband ferromagnetic fluc…
Motivated by puzzling spin-glass behaviors observed in many pyrochlore-based magnets, effects of magnetoelastic coupling to local lattice distortions were recently studied by the authors for a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 047204 (2011)]. Here, we extend the analyses with focusing on the critical property of the spin-glass transition which occurs concomitantly with a nematic transition. Finite-size scaling analyses are performed up to a larger system size with 8192 spins to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents. The exponent…
A quantum critical point (QCP) between the antiferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phases was realized by applying a hydrostatic pressure of ~ 7 GPa on single crystals of NiS_{2} pyrite with a low residual resistivity, rho_{0}, of 0.5 mu-Omega-cm. We found that the critical behavior of the resistivity, rho, in this clean system contrasts sharply with those observed in its disordered analogue, NiS_{2-x}Se_{x} solid-solution, demonstrating the unexpectedly drastic effect of disorder on the quantum criticality. Over a whole paramagnetic region investigated up to P = 9 GPa, a crossover temperature,…
Heat and charge conduction were measured in the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn5, an antiferromagnet with T_N=3.8 K. The thermal resistivity is found to be proportional to the magnetic entropy, revealing that spin fluctuations are as effective in scattering electrons as they are in disordering local moments. The electrical resistivity, governed by a q^2 weighting of fluctuations, increases monotonically with temperature. In contrast, the difference between thermal and electrical resistivities, characterized by an omega^2 weighting, peaks sharply at T_N and eventually goes to zero at a temperature T…
In the hidden order of URu2Si2 the resistivity at very low temperature shows no T^2 behavior above the transition to superconductivity. However, when entering the antiferromagnetic phase, the Fermi liquid behavior is recovered. We discuss the change of the inelastic term when entering the AF phase with pressure considering the temperature dependence of the Grueneisen parameter at ambient pressure and the influence of superconductivity by an extrapolation of high field data.
The f-electron compound CeAuSb2, which crystallizes in the ZrCuSi2-type tetragonal structure, orders antiferromagnetically between 5 and 6.8 K, where the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_N depends on the occupancy of the Au site. Here we report the electrical resistivity and heat capacity of a high-quality crystal CeAuSb2 with T_N of 6.8 K, the highest for this compound. The magnetic transition temperature is initially suppressed with pressure, but is intercepted by a new magnetic state above 2.1 GPa. The new phase shows a dome shape with pressure and coexists with another phase at p…
We study the temperature-dependent quantum correction to conductivity due to the interplay of spin density fluctuations and weak disorder for a two-dimensional metal near an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point. AFM spin density fluctuations carry large momenta around the ordering vector $\mathbf{Q}$ and, at lowest order of the spin-fermion coupling, only scatter electrons between "hot spots" of the Fermi surface which are connected by $\mathbf{Q}$. Earlier, it was seen that the quantum interference between AFM spin density fluctuations and soft diffusive modes of the disordered meta…
We compare the magnetoresistance of UCu$_{3.5}$Pd$_{1.5}$ with calculations done within the disordered heavy fermion framework of Miranda et al. using a phenomenological spectral function for the Anderson model, calibrated against Bethe ansatz and quantum Monte Carlo results. Both in experiment and theory, we find a weak negative magnetoresistance. In contrast, thermodynamic quantities have a strong field dependence. Using qualitative arguments broad distribution of Kondo scales, we explain the different field dependence of susceptibility and resistivity.
Using the recently introduced adaptive density-matrix renormalization-group method, we study the many spin-spin correlations of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with random coupling constants, namely, the mean value of the bulk and of the end-to-end correlations, the typical value of the bulk correlations, and the distribution of the bulk correlations. Our results are in striking agreement with the predictions of the strong-disorder renormalization group method. We do not find any hint of logarithmic corrections neither in the bulk average correlations, which were recently rep…
We report on the structural, thermodynamic and transport properties of high-quality single crystals of YbNiSi3 grown by the flux method. This compound crystallizes in the SmNiGe3 layered structure type of the Cmmm space group. The general physical behavior is that of a Kondo lattice showing an antiferromagnetic ground state below T_N = 5.1 K. This is among the highest ordering temperatures for a Yb-based intermetallic, indicating strong exchange interaction between the Yb ions, which are close to +3 valency based on the effective moment of 4.45 mu_B/f.u. The compound has moderately heavy-elect…
The orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3 is a semimetal, an intriguing exception in iridates where the strong spin-orbit interaction coupled with electron correlations tends to impose a novel insulating state. We report results of our investigation of bulk single-crystal Sr0.94Ir0.78O2.68 or Ir-deficient, orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3. It retains the same crystal structure as stoichiometric SrIrO3 but exhibits a sharp, simultaneous antiferromagnetic (AFM) and metal-insulator (MI) transition at 185 K. Above it, the basal-plane resistivity features an extended regime of almost linear-temperature depe…
We report low-temperature measurements of the electrical resistivity of Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 single crystals with 0 <= x <= 0.12. The isoelectronic substitution of Co on the Rh site leads to a decrease of the unit cell volume which stabilizes the antiferromagnetism. Consequently, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature increases upon Co substitution. For x = 0.07 Co content a subsequent low-temperature transition is observed in agreement with susceptibility measurements and results on YbRh2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure. Above the Neel transition the resistivity follows a non-Fermi liquid beh…
Transport properties of disordered carbon nanotubes are investigated with including long range Coulomb interactions. The resistivity and optical conductivity are calculated by using the memory functional method. In addition, the effect of localization is taken into account by use of the renormalization group analysis and it is shown that the backward scattering of the intra-valley and that of the inter-valley cannot coexist in the localized regime.
In disordered spin systems with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange, transitions into and out of a magnetic-field-induced ordered phase pass through a unique regime. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the zero-temperature behavior, these intermediate regions are determined to be a Bose-Glass phase. The localization of field-induced triplons causes a finite compressibility and hence glassiness in the disordered phase.
