We report the temperature dependence of resistivity (rho) and Hall coefficient (R_H) in the normal state of homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films with kFl~3.27-10.12. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of these films varies from 8.13K to 16.8K. While our least disordered film displays usual metallic behavior, for all the films with kFl<8.13, both and are negative up to 300K. We observe that R_H(T) varies linearly with rho(T) for all the films. Measurements performed on a 2nm thick Be film shows similar behavior >. This behavior is inconsistent with existing theories of localization and e-e interactions in a disordered metal.
We investigate the magnetic field evolution of the superconducting state in a strongly disordered NbN thin film which exhibits a magnetic field tuned superconductor to insulator-like transition, employing low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Transport measurements of the sample reveals a characteristic magnetic field, which separates the low field state where resistance decreases with decreasing temperature, i.e. dR/dT > 0 and a high-field state where dR/dT < 0. However, STS imaging of the superconducting state reveals a smooth evolution across this field and the presence of …
We study a quantum particle coupled to hard-core bosons and propagating on disordered ladders with $R$ legs. The particle dynamics is studied with the help of rate equations for the boson-assisted transitions between the Anderson states. We demonstrate that for finite $R < \infty$ and sufficiently strong disorder the dynamics is subdiffusive, while the two-dimensional planar systems with $R\to \infty$ appear to be diffusive for arbitrarily strong disorder. The transition from diffusive to subdiffusive regimes may be identified via statistical fluctuations of resistivity. The corresponding dist…
Despite much theoretical effort, there is no complete theory of the 'strange' metal state of the high temperature superconductors, and its linear-in-temperature, $T$, resistivity. Recent experiments showing an unexpected linear-in-field, $B$, magnetoresistivity have deepened the puzzle. We propose a simple model of itinerant electrons, interacting via random couplings with electrons localized on a lattice of quantum 'dots' or 'islands'. This model is solvable in a large-$N$ limit, and can reproduce observed behavior. The key feature of our model is that the electrons in each quantum dot are de…
We study the superconductor-insulator transition in nanohole ultrathin films in a transverse magnetic field by numerical simulation of a Josephson-junction array model. Geometrical disorder due to the random location of nanoholes in the film corresponds to random flux in the array model. Monte Carlo simulation in the path-integral representation is used to determine the critical behavior and the universal resistivity at the transition as a function of disorder and average number of flux quanta per cell, $f_o$. The resistivity increases with disorder for noninteger $ f_o$ while it decreases for…
Low magnetic field anomaly of the Hall effect in disordered 2D systems: Interplay between weak localization and electron-electron interaction
