We report the evolution of superconducting properties as a function of disorder in homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films grown on (100) MgO substrates, studied through a combination of electrical transport, Hall Effect and tunneling measurements. The thickness of all our films are >50nm much larger than the coherence length ~5nm. The effective disorder in different films encompasses a large range, with the Ioffe-Regel parameter varying in the range kFl~1.38-8.77. Tunneling measurements on films with different disorder reveals that for films with large disorder the bulk superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is not associated with a vanishing of the superconducting energy gap, but rather a large broadening of the superconducting density of states. Our results provide strong evidence of the loss of superconductivity via phase-fluctuations in a disordered s-wave superconductor.
We report the evolution of superconducting properties with disorder, in 3-dimensional homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films. The effective disorder in NbN is controlled from moderately clean limit down to Anderson metal-insulator transition by changing the deposition conditions. We propose a phase diagram for NbN in temperature-disorder plane. With increasing disorder we observe that as kFl-->1 the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and minimum conductivity (sigma_0) go to zero. The phase diagram shows that in homogeneously disordered 3-D NbN films, the metal-insulator tra…
The notion of spontaneous formation of an inhomogeneous superconducting state is at the heart of most theories attempting to understand the superconducting state in the presence of strong disorder. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, we experimentally demonstrate that under the competing effects of strong homogeneous disorder and superconducting correlations, the superconducting state of a conventional superconductor, NbN, spontaneously segregates into domains. Tracking these domains as a function of temperature we observe that t…
We measure the frequency dependence of the complex ac conductivity of NbN films with different levels of disorder in frequency range 0.4-20 GHz. Films with low disorder exhibit a narrow dynamic fluctuation regime above T_c as expected for a conventional superconductor. However, for strongly disordered samples, the fluctuation regime extends well above T_c, with a strongly frequency-dependent superfluid stiffness which disappears only at a temperature T* close to the pseudogap temperature obtained from scanning tunneling measurements. Such a finite-frequency response is associated to a marked s…
We investigate the magnetic field evolution of the superconducting state in a strongly disordered NbN thin film which exhibits a magnetic field tuned superconductor to insulator-like transition, employing low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Transport measurements of the sample reveals a characteristic magnetic field, which separates the low field state where resistance decreases with decreasing temperature, i.e. dR/dT > 0 and a high-field state where dR/dT < 0. However, STS imaging of the superconducting state reveals a smooth evolution across this field and the presence of …
We report the temperature dependence of resistivity (rho) and Hall coefficient (R_H) in the normal state of homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films with kFl~3.27-10.12. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of these films varies from 8.13K to 16.8K. While our least disordered film displays usual metallic behavior, for all the films with kFl<8.13, both and are negative up to 300K. We observe that R_H(T) varies linearly with rho(T) for all the films. Measurements performed on a 2nm thick Be film shows similar behavior >. This behavior is inconsistent with existing theories of…
We present a phase diagram as a function of disorder in three-dimensional NbN thin films, as the system enters the critical disorder for the destruction of the superconducting state. The superconducting state is investigated using a combination of magnetotransport and tunneling spectroscopy measurements. Our studies reveal 3 different disorder regimes. At low disorder the (k_{F}l~10-4), the system follows the mean field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer behavior where the superconducting energy gap vanishes at the temperature where electrical resistance appears. For stronger disorder (k_{F}l<4) a "pse…
Although matching effects in superconducting anti-dot arrays have been studied extensively through magneto-resistance oscillations, these investigations have been restricted to a very narrow temperature window close to the superconducting transition. Here we report a "two coil" mutual inductance technique, which allows the study of this phenomenon deep in the superconducting state, through a direct measurement of the magnetic field variation of the shielding response. We demonstrate how this technique can be used to resolve outstanding issues on the origin of matching effects in superconductin…
It is now well known that the properties of the disordered s wave superconductors can deviate significantly from the prediction of standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. By measuring the temperature dependence of the resonance frequency, $f_0$, of microwave resonators made from disordered NbTiN and TiN thin films, at low temperatures, below half of the superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, Driessen et al. \cite{driessen2012PRL} demonstrated that $f_0$ vanishes faster than predicted from the BCS theory. Here, we report on the temperature dependence of $f_0$ of microwave resonat…
The topic of superconductivity in strongly disordered materials has attracted a significant attention. In particular vivid debates are related to the subject of intrinsic spatial inhomogeneity responsible for non-BCS relation between the superconducting gap and the pairing potential. Here we report experimental study of electron transport properties of narrow NbN nanowires with effective cross sections of the order of the debated inhomogeneity scales. We find that conventional models based on phase slip concept provide reasonable fits for the shape of the R(T) transition curve. Temperature dep…
We have constructed a phase diagram in temperature-magnetic field-disorder space for homogeneously disordered superconducting tantalum thin films. Phases are phenomenologically identified by the nonlinear transport characteristics that are unique in each phase. The resulting phase diagram shows that a direct superconductor-insulator transition is prohibited at any disorder because the superconducting phase is completely surrounded by the intervening metallic phase.
We present transport, Hall effect, electronic tunnelling and penetration depth studies in 3D homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films with disorder ranging from the moderately clean limit (k_Fl~10.12) to the very dirty limit (k_Fl~1.24). The superconducting transition temperature (T_c) decreases from ~17K to less than 350mK with increasing disorder. The T_c and conductivity at the lowest temperature both asymptotically approach zero as k_Fl tends to 1, indicating a coincidence of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and the superconductor-insulator transition. Close to critical disord…
We report on the inelastic-scattering rate of electrons on phonons and relaxation of electron energy studied by means of magnetoconductance, and photoresponse, respectively, in a series of strongly disordered superconducting NbN films. The studied films with thicknesses in the range from 3 to 33 nm are characterized by different Ioffe-Regel parameters but an almost constant product q_Tl(q_T is the wave vector of thermal phonons and l is the elastic mean free path of electrons). In the temperature range 14-30 K, the electron-phonon scattering rates obey temperature dependencies close to the pow…
We report on experimental study of the effect of disorder on electronic parameters and inelastic scattering mechanisms in ultrathin superconducting NbN films, which are commonly used in single-photon detectors. An increase in disorder in the studied 2.5 nm thick NbN films characterized by Ioffe-Regel parameter from 6.3 to 1.6 is accompanied by a decrease in the critical temperature $T_c$ from 11.5 K to 3.4 K. By measuring magnetoconductance in the range from $T_c$ to $\sim3T_c$, we extract the inelastic scattering rates of electrons, including electron-phonon (e-ph) scattering rates $τ_{e-ph}^…
Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we address the problem of the superconductor-insulator phase transition (SIT) in homogeneously disordered ultrathin (2-15 nm) films of NbN. Samples thicker than 8 nm, for which the Ioffe-Regel parameter $k_F l \geq 5.6$, manifest a conventional superconductivity : A spatially homogeneous BCS-like gap, vanishing at the critical temperature, and a vortex lattice in magnetic field. Upon thickness reduction, however, while $k_F l$ lowers, the STS revealed striking deviations from the BCS scenario, among which a progressive decrease of the coherence peak…
We present a physically consistent interpretation of the dc electrical properties of niobiumnitride (NbN)-based superconducting hot-electron bolometer (HEB-) mixers, using concepts of nonequilibrium superconductivity. Through this we clarify what physical information can be extracted from the resistive transition and the dc current-voltage characteristics, measured at suitably chosen temperatures, and relevant for device characterization and optimization. We point out that the intrinsic spatial variation of the electronic properties of disordered superconductors, such as NbN, leads to a variat…
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the statistical properties of the inhomogeneous order-parameter distribution (OPD) at the verge of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). We find within two prototype fermionic and bosonic models for disordered superconductors that one can identify a universal rescaling of the OPD. By performing scanning-tunneling microscopy experiments in three samples of NbN with increasing disorder we show that such a rescaling describes also with an excellent accuracy the experimental data. These results can provide a breakthrough in our understanding…
We present a quantitative comparison between the measurements of the complex conductance at low (kHz) and high (GHz) frequency in a thin superconducting film of NbN and the theoretical predictions of the dynamical Beresinksii-Kosterlitz-Thouless theory. While the data in the GHz regime can be well reproduced by extending the standard approach to the realistic case of an inhomogeneous sample, the low-frequency measurements present an anomalously large dissipative response around Tc. This anomaly can only be accounted for by assuming a strong slowing down of the vortex diffusion in the kHz regim…
We probe the presence of long-range correlations in phase fluctuations by analyzing the higher-order spectrum of resistance fluctuations in ultra-thin NbN superconducting films. The non-Gaussian component of resistance fluctuations is found to be sensitive to film thickness close to the transition, which allows us to distinguish between mean field and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type superconducting transitions. The extent of non-Gaussianity was found to be bounded by the BKT and mean field transition temperatures and depend strongly on the roughness and structural inhomogeneity of t…
Occurrence of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition is investigated by superfluid density measurements for two-dimensional (2D) disordered NbN films with disorder level very close to a superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). Our data show a robust BKT transition even near this 2D disorder-tuned quantum critical point (QCP). This observation is in direct contrast with previous data on deeply underdoped quasi-2D cuprates near the SIT. As our NbN films approach the QCP, the vortex-core energy, an important energy scale in the BKT transition, scales with the superconducting gap, …
We demonstrate evidence of coherent magnetic flux tunneling through superconducting nanowires patterned in a thin highly disordered NbN film. The phenomenon is revealed as a superposition of flux states in a fully metallic superconducting loop with the nanowire acting as an effective tunnel barrier for the magnetic flux, and reproducibly observed in different wires. The flux superposition achieved in the fully metallic NbN rings proves the universality of the phenomenon previously reported for InOx. We perform microwave spectroscopy and study the tunneling amplitude as a function of the wire w…
Many disordered superconducting films exhibit smeared tunneling spectra with evident in-gap states. We demonstrated that the tunneling density of states in ultrathin MoC films is gapless and can be described by the Dynes version of the BCS density of states with a strong broadening parameter Gamma accounting for the suppression of coherence peaks and increased in-gap states. The thinner the film, the lower the Tc and the superconducting energy gap Delta and the larger the Gamma. MoC films of 3 nm thickness deposited simultaneously on silicon and sapphire substrates reveal very similar scalar d…
Optical conductivity of a moderately disordered superconducting NbN film was investigated by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in external magnetic field applied along the film plane. The film thickness of about 5 nm was comparable with the coherence length, so vortices should not form. This was confirmed by the fact that no marked difference between the spectra with terahertz electric field set perpendicular and parallel to the external magnetic field was observed. Simultaneous use of Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory and the model of optical conductivity by Herman and Hlubina proved t…
We investigate the origin of matching effect observed in disordered superconducting NbN thin films with periodic array of holes. In addition to the periodic variation in the electrical resistance just above the superconducting transition temperature, Tc0, we find pronounced periodic variations with magnetic field in all dynamical quantities which can be influenced by flux-line motion under an external drive such as the magnetic shielding response and the critical current which survive in some samples down to temperatures as low as 0.09Tc0. In contrast, the superconducting energy gap, D which i…
We theoretically investigate the resonance of third harmonic generation (THG) that has been observed at frequency being half of the superconducting gap in a multiband disordered superconductor NbN. The central question is whether the dominant contribution to the THG resonance comes from the Higgs mode (the collective amplitude mode of the superconducting order parameter) or quasiparticle excitations. To resolve this issue, we analyze a realistic three-band model with effective intraband and interband phonon-mediated interactions estimated from first-principles together with nonmagnetic impurit…
We explore the role of phase fluctuations in a 3-dimensional s-wave superconductor, NbN, as we approach the critical disorder for the destruction of the superconducting state. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal that in the presence of strong disorder, a finite gap in the electronic spectrum continues to persist at temperatures above Tc. With increase in disorder, the superfluid density is strongly suppressed at low temperatures and evolves towards a linear-T variation at higher temperatures. These observations provide strong evidence that phase fluctuation leads to the formati…

Recent scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments in NbN thin disordered superconducting films found an emergent inhomogeneity at the scale of tens of nanometers. This inhomogeneity is mirrored by an apparent dimensional crossover in the paraconductivity measured in transport above the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$. This behavior was interpreted in terms of an anomalous diffusion of fluctuating Cooper pairs, that display a {\em quasi-confinement} (i.e., a slowing down of their diffusive dynamics) on length scales shorter than the inhomogeneity identified by tunnelling experiments.…
A reentrant temperature dependence of the thermoresistivity $ρ_{\mathrm{xx}}(T)$ between an onset local superconducting ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{loc}^\mathrm{onset}$ and a global superconducting transition at $T=T_\mathrm{glo}^\mathrm{offset}$ has been reported in disordered conventional 3-dimensional (3D) superconductors. The disorder of these superconductors is a result of either an extrinsic granularity due to grain boundaries, or of an intrinsic granularity ascribable to the electronic disorder originating from impurity dopants. Here, the effects of Fe doping on the electronic prope…

We study the effect of superconducting fluctuations on the longitudinal and the transverse (Hall) conductivity in homogeneously disordered films. Our calculation is based on the Usadel equation in the real-time formulation. We adjust this approach to derive analytic expressions for the fluctuation corrections in the entire metallic part of the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, including the effects of both classical and quantum fluctuations. This method allows us to obtain fluctuation corrections in a compact and effective way, establishing a direct connection between phenomenological …
The effect of disorder is investigated in granular superconductive materials with strong and weak links. The transition is controlled by the interplay of the \emph{tunneling} $g$ and \emph{intragrain} $g_{intr}$ conductances, which depend on the strength of the intergrain coupling. For $g \ll g_{intr}$, the transition involves first the grain boundary, while for $g \sim g_{intr}$ the transition occurs into the whole grain. The different intergrain coupling is considered by modelling the superconducting material as a disordered network of Josephson junctions. Numerical simulations show that on …
As a part of my doctoral thesis, I studied the effect of phase fluctuations in two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) superconducting films of conventional s-wave superconductor, NbN, by measuring the electrodynamics response through magnetic penetration depth at low frequency and the complex conductivity at microwave frequencies. We show that the phase transition in 2D or quasi-2D superconductors can be reconciled with the standard Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition when the small vortex core energy is taken into consideration. In 3D NbN films, we show that in presence …

Superconductivity in disordered systems close to an incipient localization transition has been an area of investigation for many years. It has been noted that in such highly disordered superconductors, anomalous spectral weight develops in their conductivity near and below the superconducting gap energy. In this work we investigate the low frequency conductivity in disordered superconducting NbN thin films close to the localization transition with time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. In the normal state, strong deviations from the Drude form due to incipient localization are found. In the super…
When a magnetic field is applied, the mixed state of a conventional Type II superconductor gets destroyed at the upper critical field Hc2, where the normal vortex cores overlap with each other. Here, we show that in the presence weak and homogeneous disorder the destruction of superconductivity with field follows a different route. Starting with a weakly disordered NbN thin film ( Tc ~ 9K ), we show that under the application of magnetic field the superconducting state becomes increasingly granular, where lines of vortices separate the superconducting islands. Consequently, phase fluctuations …
The concept of mass-generation via the Higgs mechanism was strongly inspired by earlier works on the Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect in superconductors. In quantum field theory, the excitations of longitudinal components of the Higgs field manifest as massive Higgs bosons. The analogous Higgs mode in superconductors has not yet been observed due to its rapid decay into particle-hole pairs. Following recent theories, however, the Higgs mode should decrease below the pairing gap $2Δ$ and become visible in two-dimensional systems close to the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). For experimental…
Suppression of the critical temperature in homogeneously disordered superconducting films is a consequence of the disorder-induced enhancement of Coulomb repulsion. We demonstrate that for the majority of thin films studied now this effect cannot be completely explained in the assumption of two-dimensional diffusive nature of electrons motion. The main contribution to the $T_c$ suppression arises from the correction to the electron-electron interaction constant coming from small scales of the order of the Fermi wavelength that leads to the critical temperature shift $δT_c/T_{c0} \sim - 1/k_Fl$…
Quantum phase-slip (QPS) is the exact dual to the well-known Josephson effect. Although there are numerous proposals for applications of QPS devices, experimental work to develop these remains in the relatively early stages. Significant barriers to exploiting QPS nanowires for useful technologies still exist, such as establishing robust nanowire fabrication methods that allow coupling to low-loss circuits, and demonstrating control over the QPS process with an experimenter-controlled external bias. Here we report experiments which show that both of these barriers have been overcome. We present…
We report on the study of phonon properties and electron-phonon coupling in thin NbTiN films, which are intensively exploited in superconducting devices. Studied NbTiN films with thicknesses less than 10~nm are disordered with respect to electron transport, the Ioffe-Regel parameter of $k_F l_e = 2.5-3.0$ ($k_F$ is the Fermi wave vector and $l_e$ is the electron mean free path), and inelastic electron-phonon interaction, the product $q_T l_e \ll 1$ ($q_T$ is the wave vector of a thermal phonon). By means of magnetoconductance and photoresponse techniques, we derived the inelastic electron-phon…
We report the construction and performance of a low temperature, high field scanning tunneling microscope (STM) operating down to 350mK and in magnetic fields up to 9T, with thin film deposition and in-situ cleaving capabilities. The main focus lies on the simple design of STM head allowing top loading of the sample and innovative sample holder design that allows us to get spectroscopic data on superconducting thin films grown in-situ on insulating substrates. Other design details on sample transport, chamber and vibration isolation scheme are also described. We demonstrate the capability of o…
We show that inhomogeneities in the spatial distribution of Cooper pairs and in the phase of the local superconducting order parameter in the vicinity of a superconductor-normal state transition (SNT) in two dimensions can be highly sensitive to a perpendicular magnetic field. We focus on the role of orbital effects in the field-dependence of local superfluid stiffness and superconducting phase disorder in homogeneously-disordered two-dimensional superconductor thin films. The relative importance of these orbital effects is analyzed in different physical regimes dominated by Coulomb blockade, …
We have studied the electronic transport properties of homogeneously disordered superconducting tantalum thin films in magnetic fields. The films exhibit three distinct transport regimes in the zero temperature limit which we identify as superconducting, metallic, and insulating phases. The metallic phase is unexpected. The transport characteristics of this metallic phase are found to be similar to those of MoGe films and high mobility dilute two-dimensional electrons or holes confined in semiconductor interface or transistor geometry.
We study the transport in ultrathin disordered film near the quantum critical point induced by the Zeeman field. We calculate corrections to the normal state conductivity due to quantum pairing fluctuations. The fluctuation-induced transport is mediated by virtual rather than real quasi-particles. We find that at zero temperature, where the corrections come from purely quantum fluctuations, the Aslamazov-Larkin paraconductivity term, the Maki-Thompson interference contribution and the density of states effects are all of the same order. The total correction leads to the negative magnetoresista…

We report results of transport measurements in the quantum critical regime of the disorder tuned, 2D superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in homogeneously disordered films. We show that, as the superconducting transition temperature decreases, the transition width grows, appearing to diverge at the SIT. In addition, structure develops in the DC current-voltage characteristics of films closest to the SIT indicating that the 2D superconductivity is driven into a regime of extreme inhomogeneity. The data suggest a picture of the phase transition in which large amplitude fluctuations occur as…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy at very low temperature on homogeneously disordered superconducting Titanium Nitride thin films reveals strong spatial inhomogeneities of the superconducting gap $Δ$ in the density of states. Upon increasing disorder, we observe suppression of the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ towards zero, enhancement of spatial fluctuations in $Δ$, and growth of the $Δ/T_c$ ratio. These findings suggest that local superconductivity survives across the disorder-driven superconductor-insulator transition.
Superconducting quantum phase transitions tuned by disorder (d), paramagnetic impurity (MI) and perpendicular magnetic field (B) have been studied in homogeneously disordered ultrathin a-Pb films. The MI-tuned transition is characterized by progressive suppression of the critical temperature to zero and a continuous transition to a weakly insulating normal state with increasing MI density. In all important aspects, the d-tuned transition closely resembles the MI-tuned transition and both appear to be fermionic in nature. The B-tuned transition is qualitatively different and probably bosonic. I…
In a sandwich consisting of two superconducting films, one weakly pinning and one strongly pinning, the vortex positions in both films are determined by the strongly pinning material and the vortex lattice is disordered in both films. We used (strongly pinning) NbN and (weakly pinning) MoGe and studied, by directly imaging the vortex core positions with a scanning tunnelling microscope, how this disorder is restored with increasing thickness of MoGe layer or when the interface is made insulating. For clean interfaces we find that the first reordering of the vortex lattice is found at a layer t…
We report on terahertz frequency-domain spectroscopy (THz-FDS) experiments in which we measure charge carrier dynamics and excitations of thin-film superconducting systems at low temperatures in the THz spectral range. The characteristics of the set-up and the experimental procedures are described comprehensively. We discuss the single-particle density of states and a theory of electrodynamic absorption and optical conductivity of conventional superconductors. We present the experimental performance of the setup at low temperatures for a broad spectral range from 0.1 - 1.1 THz by the example o…
We use sub-Kelvin scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate the suppression of superconductivity in homogeneously disordered ultrathin MoC films. We observe that the superconducting state remains spatially homogeneous even on the films of 3 nm thickness. The vortex imaging suggests the global phase coherence in our films. Upon decreasing thickness, when the superconducting transition drops from 8.5 to 1.2 K, the superconducting energy gap follows perfectly Tc. All this is pointing to a two-stage fermionic scenario of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) via a metallic state as an…
As the normal state sheet resistance, $R_n$, of a thin film superconductor increases, its superconducting properties degrade. For $R_n\simeq h/4e^2$ superconductivity disappears and a transition to a nonsuperconducting state occurs. We present electron tunneling and transport measurements on ultrathin, homogeneously disordered superconducting films in the vicinity of this transition. The data provide strong evidence that fluctuations in the amplitude of the superconducting order parameter dominate the tunneling density of states and the resistive transitions in this regime. We briefly discuss …
The interplay of strong disorder and superconductivity is a topic of long-term interest in condensed matter physics. Here we explore the nonlinear THz response of superconducting NbN films close to the 3D metal-insulator transition. For the least disordered samples, the magnitude of the nonlinear $χ^{(3)}$ response follows the temperature dependence of the superfluid density as expected. In contrast, for high disorder samples near the metal-insulator transition the $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinearity persists to temperatures as high as even 4 times the $T_c$ of the cleanest sample. We discuss the possible …
We show that under an a.c. magnetic field excitation the vortex lattice in a superconductor with periodic array of holes can undergo a transition from a Mott-like state where each vortex is localized in a hole, to a metal-like state where the vortices get delocalized. The vortex dynamics is studied through the magnetic shielding response which is measured using a low frequency two-coil mutual inductance technique on a disordered superconducting NbN film having periodic array of holes. We observe that the shielding response of the vortex state is strongly dependent on the amplitude of the a.c. …
