We study a quantum particle coupled to hard-core bosons and propagating on disordered ladders with $R$ legs. The particle dynamics is studied with the help of rate equations for the boson-assisted transitions between the Anderson states. We demonstrate that for finite $R < \infty$ and sufficiently strong disorder the dynamics is subdiffusive, while the two-dimensional planar systems with $R\to \infty$ appear to be diffusive for arbitrarily strong disorder. The transition from diffusive to subdiffusive regimes may be identified via statistical fluctuations of resistivity. The corresponding distribution function in the diffusive regime has fat tails which decrease with the system size $L$ much slower than $1/\sqrt{L}$. Finally, we present evidence that similar non--Gaussian fluctuations arise also in standard models of many-body localization, i.e., in strongly disordered quantum spin chains.
We report the temperature dependence of resistivity (rho) and Hall coefficient (R_H) in the normal state of homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films with kFl~3.27-10.12. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of these films varies from 8.13K to 16.8K. While our least disordered film displays usual metallic behavior, for all the films with kFl<8.13, both and are negative up to 300K. We observe that R_H(T) varies linearly with rho(T) for all the films. Measurements performed on a 2nm thick Be film shows similar behavior >. This behavior is inconsistent with existing theories of…
We report the detailed study of the influence of the spin and valley splittings on such physical observables of the two-dimensional disordered electron liquid as resistivity, spin and valley susceptibilities. We explain qualitatively the nonmonotonic dependence of the resistivity with temperature in the presence of a parallel magnetic field. In the presence of either the spin splitting or the valley splitting we predict novel, with two maximum points, temperature dependence of the resistivity.
The electrical resistivity of several relatively clean metallic ferromagnets, as well as the helimagnet MnSi, is commonly observed to exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures. This behavior, which is found in both ordered and disordered phases, and both near and away from the magnetic transition, remains a major unsolved problem. We derive and discuss three novel mechanisms underlying such behavior that are based on electron scattering mediated by the exchange of (1) ferromagnons or (2) skyrmionic fluctuations, both in conjunction with weak disorder, or (3) helimagnons in clean sy…
We perform the calculation of the dc resistivity as a function of temperature of the "strange-metal" state that emerges in the vicinity of a spin-density-wave phase transition in the presence of weak disorder. This scenario is relevant to the phenomenology of many important correlated materials, such as, e.g., the pnictides, the heavy-fermion compounds and the cuprates. To accomplish this task, we implement the memory-matrix approach that allows the calculation of the transport coefficients of the model beyond the quasiparticle paradigm. Our computation is also inspired by the $ε=3-d$ expansio…
The resistivity in metals near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) is strongly affected by small amounts of disorder. In a quasi-classical treatment, we show that an interplay of strongly anisotropic scattering due to spin fluctuations and isotropic impurity scattering leads to a large regime where the resistivity varies as T^alpha, with an anomalous exponent, alpha, 1 <= alpha <= 1.5, depending on the amount of disorder. I argue that this mechanism explains in some detail the anomalous temperature dependence of the resistivity observed in CePd_2Si_2, CeNi_2Ge_2 and CeIn_3 near t…
Stoichiometric Sr2IrO4 is a ferromagnetic Jeff = 1/2 Mott insulator driven by strong spin-orbit coupling. Introduction of very dilute oxygen vacancies into single-crystal Sr2IrO4-delta with delta < 0.04 leads to significant changes in lattice parameters and an insulator-to-metal transition at TMI = 105 K. The highly anisotropic electrical resistivity of the low-temperature metallic state for delta ~ 0.04 exhibits anomalous properties characterized by non-Ohmic behavior and an abrupt current-induced transition in the resistivity at T* = 52 K, which separates two regimes of resisitive switching …
We present a detailed study on the (magneto)transport properties of as-cast and heat treated material UCu$_4$Pd. We find a pronounced sample dependence of the resistivity $ρ$ of as-cast samples, and reproduce the annealing dependence of $ρ$. In our study of the Hall effect we determine a metallic carrier density for all samples, and a temperature dependence of the Hall constant which is inconsistent with the Skew scattering prediction. The magnetoresistive response is very small and characteristic for spin disorder scattering, suggesting that overall the resistivity is controlled mostly by non…
One of the prime manifestations of an anisotropic electronic state in underdoped cuprates is the in-plane resistivity anisotropy $Δρ\equiv(ρ_{a}-ρ_{b})/ρ_{b}$. Here we use a Boltzmann-equation approach to compute the contribution to $Δρ$ arising from scattering by anisotropic charge and spin fluctuations, which have been recently observed experimentally. While the anisotropy in the charge fluctuations is manifested in the correlation length, the anisotropy in the spin fluctuations emerges only in the structure factor. As a result, we find that spin fluctuations favor $Δρ>0$, whereas charge flu…
We explore the role of phase fluctuations in a 3-dimensional s-wave superconductor, NbN, as we approach the critical disorder for the destruction of the superconducting state. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal that in the presence of strong disorder, a finite gap in the electronic spectrum continues to persist at temperatures above Tc. With increase in disorder, the superfluid density is strongly suppressed at low temperatures and evolves towards a linear-T variation at higher temperatures. These observations provide strong evidence that phase fluctuation leads to the formati…
We study sample-to-sample fluctuations of the gap ratio in the energy spectra in finite disordered spin chains. The chains are described by the random-field Ising model and the Heisenberg model. We show that away from the ergodic/nonergodic crossover, the fluctuations are correctly captured by the Rosenzweig-Porter (RP) model. However, fluctuations in the microscopic models significantly exceed those in the RP model in the vicinity of the crossover. We show that upon introducing an extension to the RP model, one correctly reproduces the fluctuations in all regimes, i.e., in the ergodic and non…
Despite much theoretical effort, there is no complete theory of the 'strange' metal state of the high temperature superconductors, and its linear-in-temperature, $T$, resistivity. Recent experiments showing an unexpected linear-in-field, $B$, magnetoresistivity have deepened the puzzle. We propose a simple model of itinerant electrons, interacting via random couplings with electrons localized on a lattice of quantum 'dots' or 'islands'. This model is solvable in a large-$N$ limit, and can reproduce observed behavior. The key feature of our model is that the electrons in each quantum dot are de…
We consider a two-dimensional disordered conductor in the regime when the superconducting phase is destroyed by the magnetic field. We analyze a combination of fluctuations of different origin which results in an effective interaction amplitude suitable for a spontaneous s-wave odd-frequency pairing instability. We observe that the end point of the superconductivity is a quantum critical point separating the conventional superconducting phase from a state with the odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing instability. We speculate that this could shed light on a rather mysterious insulating state obs…
The low temperature phase diagram of 1D disordered quantum systems like charge or spin density waves, superfluids and related systems is considered by a full finite T renormalization group approach, presented here for the first time. At zero temperature the consideration of quantum phase slips leads to a new scenario for the unpinning (delocalization) transition. At finite T a rich cross-over diagram is found which reflects the zero temperature quantum critical behavior.
The 3d electron spinel compound LiV2O4 exhibits heavy fermion behaviour below 30K which is related to antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations strongly enhanced in an extended region of momentum space. This mechanism explains enhanced thermodynamic quantities and nearly critical NMR relaxation in the framework of the selfconsistent renormalization (SCR) theory. Here we show that the low-T Fermi liquid behaviour of the resistivity and a deviation from this behavior for higher T may also be understood within that context. We calculate the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity ρ(T) assu…
We consider paradigmatic quenched disordered quantum spin models, viz., the XY spin glass and random-field XY models, and show that quenched averaged quantum correlations can exhibit the order-from-disorder phenomenon for finite-size systems as well as in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, we find that the order-from-disorder can get more pronounced in the presence of temperature by suitable tuning of the system parameters. The effects are found for entanglement measures as well as for information-theoretic quantum correlation ones, although the former show them more prominently. We also obser…
Conductivity noise in dc current biased La_{0.82}Ca_{0.18}MnO_{3} single crystals has been investigated in different metastable resistivity states enforced by applying voltage pulses to the sample at low temperatures. Noise measured in all investigated resistivity states is of 1/f-type and its intensity at high temperatures and low dc bias scales as a square of the bias. At liquid nitrogen temperatures for under bias exceeding a threshold value, the behavior of the noise deviates from above quasi- equilibrium modulation noise and depends in a non monotonic way on applied bias. The bias range o…
The Aharonov-Casher effect is the analogue of the Aharonov-Bohm effect that applies to neutral particles carrying a magnetic moment. This can be manifested by vortices or fluxons flowing in trajectories that encompass an electric charge. These have been predicted to result in a persistent voltage which fluctuates for different sample realizations. Here we show that disordered superconductors exhibit reproducible voltage fluctuation, antisymmetrical with respect to magnetic field, as a function of various parameters such as magnetic field amplitude, field orientations and gate voltage. These re…
It has been proposed that there are two types of superconductivity in CeCu2Si2, mediated by spin fluctuations at ambient pressure, and by critical valence fluctuations around a charge instability at a pressure P_v \simeq 4.5 GPa. We present in detail some of the unusual features of this novel type of superconducting state, including the coexistence of superconductivity and huge residual resistivity of the order of the Ioffe-Regel limit, large and pressure dependent resistive transition widths in a single crystal measured under hydrostatic conditions, asymmetric pressure dependence of the speci…
A possible explanation is given for the anomalous $T^{3/2}$ temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of MnSi, which is observed in the high-pressure paramagnetic state. The unusual Fermi surface of MnSi includes large open sheets that intersect along the faces of the cubic Brillouin zone. Close to these intersections, long-wavelength interband magnetic spin fluctuations can scatter electrons from one sheet to the other. The current relaxation rate due to such interband scattering events is not reduced by vertex corrections as is that for scattering from intraband ferromagnetic fluc…
The low temperature phase diagram of 1D weakly disordered quantum systems like charge or spin density waves and Luttinger liquids is studied by a \emph{full finite temperature} renormalization group (RG) calculation. For vanishing quantum fluctuations this approach is amended by an \emph{exact} solution in the case of strong disorder and by a mapping onto the \emph{Burgers equation with noise} in the case of weak disorder, respectively. At \emph{zero} temperature we reproduce the quantum phase transition between a pinned (localized) and an unpinned (delocalized) phase for weak and strong quant…
The mesoscopic fluctuations of the Density of electronic States (DoS) and of the conductivity of two- and three- dimensional lattices with randomly distributed substitutional impurities are studied. Correlations of the levels lying above (or below) the Fermi surface, in addition to the correlations of the levels lying on opposite sides of the Fermi surface, take place at half filling due to nesting. The Bragg reflections mediate to increase static fluctuations of the conductivity in the middle of the band which change the distribution function of the conductivity at half- filling.
Resistivity in the quantum-critical fluctuation region of several metallic compounds such as the cuprates, the heavy-fermions, Fe-chalogenides and pnictides, twisted bi-layer graphene and WSe$_2$, is linear in temperature $T$ as well as in a magnetic field $H$. Scattering of fermions by the excitations of a time-reversal odd polar vector field ${\bf Ω}$ characterizing loop-current fluctuations has been shown to give a linear in T resistivity and other anomalous properties in the cuprates. An extension of this theory to an applied magnetic field is presented. Magnetic field is shown to generate…
We calculate analytically the conductivity of weakly disordered metals close to a "ferromagnetic" quantum critical point in the low temperature regime. Ferromagnetic in the sense that the effective carrier potential $V(q,ω)$, due to critical fluctuations, is peaked at zero momentum $q=0$. Vertex corrections, due to both critical fluctuations and impurity scattering, are explicitly considered. We find that only the vertex corrections due to impurity scattering, combined with the self-energy, generate appreciable effects as a function of the temperature $T$ and the control parameter $a$, which m…
There has been significant interest in the generation of very short-lived superconducting states in solid-state films. Here we consider the role of non-equilibrium superconducting fluctuations in such systems, generated by an interaction quench, considering the limit of large static disorder. In particular, we argue that because of critical slowing down, the regime of the fluctuation dominated \emph{normal state} is more important than might be naïvely thought. We show how such a state might appear in the optical conductivity, and give the appropriate non-equilibrium generalization of the Azla…
Sr4Ru3O10 is characterized by a sharp metamagnetic transition and ferromagnetic behavior occurring within the basal plane and along the c-axis, respectively. Resistivity at magnetic field, B, exhibits low-frequency quantum oscillations when B||c-axis and large magnetoresistivity accompanied by critical fluctuations driven by the metamagnetism when B^c-axis. The complex behavior evidenced in resistivity, magnetization and specific heat presented is not characteristic of any obvious ground states, and points to an exotic state that shows a delicate balance between fluctuations and order.
We discuss some recent results on the statistics of the Coulomb Blockade in disordered quantum dots containing spinless interacting fermions using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. We concentrate on the regime r_s >~1, with finite dimensionless conductance g. We present significantly different results for the cases of a Coulomb and a nearest-neighbour bare interaction. We show that neglecting rearrangements when the particle number is changed (Koopmans' approximation) can lead to large errors, and show how the spectral statistics of the self-consistent single particle orbitals ev…
Electric resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed on a single crystal of the heavy fermion compound Ce(Ni$_{0.935}$Pd$_{0.065}$)$_2$Ge$_2$ in order to study the spin fluctuations near an antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP). The resistivity and the specific heat coefficient for $T \leq$ 1 K exhibit the power law behavior expected for a 3D itinerant AF QCP ($ρ(T) \sim T^{3/2}$ and $γ(T) \sim γ_0 - b T^{1/2}$). However, for 2 $\leq T \leq$ 10 K, the susceptibility and specific heat vary as $log T$ and the resi…
We investigate the role of disorder on the superconducting (SC) fluctuation in short coherence length d-wave superconductors. The particular intetest is focused on the disorder-induced microscopic inhomogeneity of SC fluctuation and its effect on the pseudogap phenomena. We formulate the self-consistent 1-loop order theory for the SC fluctuation in inhomogeneous systems and analyze the disordered $t$-$t'$-$V$ model. The SC correlation function, electronic DOS and the critical temperature are estimated. The SC fluctuation is localized like a nanoscale granular structure when the coherence lengt…
We report the transport properties in the vortex liquid states induced by quantum fluctuations at low temperature in the layered organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_{2} Cu(NCS)_{2}. A steep drop of the resistivity observed below about 1 K separates the liquid state into two regions. In the low resistance state at lower temperature, a finite resistivity with weak temperature dependence persists down to 100 mK at least. The finite resistivity in the vortex state at T ~= 0 K indicates the realization of quantum vortex liquid assisted by the strong quantum fluctuations instead of the thermal o…
Electron irradiation has been used to introduce point defects in a controlled way in the CuO2 planes of underdoped and optimally doped YBCO. This technique allows us to perform very accurate measurements of Tc and of the residual resistivity in a wide range of defect contents xd down to Tc=0. The Tc decrease does not follow the variation expected from pair breaking theories. The evolutions of Tc and of the transition width with xd emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations, at least for the highly damaged regime. These results open new questions about the evolution of the defect induced Tc…
Multiple unconventional superconducting phases are suspected to be driven by magnetic fluctuations in the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$, and a challenge is to identify the signatures of the electronic correlations, including the magnetic fluctuations, in the bulk physical quantities. Here, we investigate thoroughly the anisotropy of the electrical resistivity of UTe$_2$ under intense magnetic fields up to 70~T, for different electrical-current and magnetic-field configurations. Two characteristic temperatures and an anisotropic low-temperature Fermi-liquid-like coefficient $A$, controlled b…
Two dimensional electrons in weakly disordered high Landau levels are considered. The current-field response in the presence of a strong microwave field, is computed. The disordered Floquet evolution operator allows us to treat the short range disorder perturbatively, at any strength of electric fields. A simplifying Random Matrix Approximation reproduces the broadened Landau levels density of states and structure factor. We derive the magnitude of the Microwave Induced Resistivity Oscillations. The disorder short wavelength cut-off determines the non-linear electric fields of the Zero Resista…
Quantum-Critical, Spin-Fluctuation-driven Residual Resistivity and Emergent Universal Correlations in the Fermi-Liquid Regime of Heavy-Fermion Superconductors
We report a novel phenomenon that the universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) can be suppressed by a small electric field E. The experiment has been carried out on single crystals of Si doped heavily with P and B beyond the critical composition of insulator to metal transition. The phenomenon is identified as a consequence of electric field induced dephasing of the electron wavefunction. Over the range of measurements, the observed dephasing rate (τ_ϕ^{-1}) varied as τ_ϕ^{-1} = aT + bE^q with q \approx 1.3 and for E >> E^*, a cross-over field, τ_ϕ^{-1} \sim E^q, independent of T. This experim…
Spin fluctuations enter the calculation of the superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ only in the next-to-leading order (i.e., in O(1/N$^2$) of the 1/N expansion of the t-J model. We have calculated these terms and show that they have only little influence on the value of T$_c$ obtained in the leading order O(1/N) in the optimal and overdoped region, i.e., for dopings larger than the instability towards a flux phase. This result disagrees with recent spin-fluctuation mediated pairing theories. The discrepancies can be traced back to the fact that in our case the coupling between electron…
We present transport, Hall effect, electronic tunnelling and penetration depth studies in 3D homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films with disorder ranging from the moderately clean limit (k_Fl~10.12) to the very dirty limit (k_Fl~1.24). The superconducting transition temperature (T_c) decreases from ~17K to less than 350mK with increasing disorder. The T_c and conductivity at the lowest temperature both asymptotically approach zero as k_Fl tends to 1, indicating a coincidence of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and the superconductor-insulator transition. Close to critical disord…
