We report the detailed study of the influence of the spin and valley splittings on such physical observables of the two-dimensional disordered electron liquid as resistivity, spin and valley susceptibilities. We explain qualitatively the nonmonotonic dependence of the resistivity with temperature in the presence of a parallel magnetic field. In the presence of either the spin splitting or the valley splitting we predict novel, with two maximum points, temperature dependence of the resistivity.
Transport properties of disordered carbon nanotubes are investigated with including long range Coulomb interactions. The resistivity and optical conductivity are calculated by using the memory functional method. In addition, the effect of localization is taken into account by use of the renormalization group analysis and it is shown that the backward scattering of the intra-valley and that of the inter-valley cannot coexist in the localized regime.
In silicon spin qubits, the valley splitting must be tuned far away from the qubit Zeeman splitting to prevent fast qubit relaxation. In this work, we study in detail how the valley splitting depends on the electric and magnetic fields as well as the quantum dot geometry for both ideal and disordered Si/SiGe interfaces. We theoretically model a realistic electrostatically defined quantum dot and find the exact ground and excited states for the out-of-plane electron motion. This enables us to find the electron envelope function and its dependence on the electric and magnetic fields. For a quant…
Resonant manipulation of carbon nanotube valley-spin qubits by an electric field is investigated theoretically. We develop a new analysis of electrically driven spin resonance exploiting fixed physical characteristics of the nanotube: a bend and inhomogeneous disorder. The spectrum is simulated for an electron valley-spin qubit coupled to a hole valley-spin qubit and an impurity electron spin, and features that coincide with a recent measurement are identified. We show that the same mechanism allows resonant control of the full four-dimensional spin-valley space.
The hydrogenated $\rm{Sb}$ monolayer epitaxially grown on a $\rm{LaFeO_3}$ substrate is a novel type of two-dimensional material hosting quantum spin-quantum anomalous Hall (QS-QAH) states. For a device formed by $\rm{Sb}$ monolayer ribbon, the QAH edge states, belong to a single valley, are located at opposite edges of the ribbon. The QSH edge states, on the other hand, belong to the other valley and are distributed in a very narrow region at the same edge. In this paper, we find such material can be used to fabricate perfect valley filter. Adopting scattering matrix method and Green's functi…
The interplay between quantum Hall ordering and spontaneously broken "internal" symmetries in two-dimensional electron systems with spin or pseudospin degrees of freedom gives rise to a variety of interesting phenomena, including novel phases, phase transitions, and topological excitations. Here we develop a theory of broken-symmetry quantum Hall states, applicable to a class of multi-valley systems, where the symmetry at issue is a point group element that combines a spatial rotation with a permutation of valley indices. The anisotropy of the dispersion relation, generally present in such sys…
Electrons in certain two-dimensional crystals possess a pseudospin degree of freedom associated with the existence of two inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone. If, as in monolayer MoS2, inversion symmetry is broken and time-reversal symmetry is present, equal and opposite amounts of k-space Berry curvature accumulate in each of the two valleys. This is conveniently quantified by the integral of the Berry curvature over a single valley - the valley Hall conductivity. We generalize this definition to include contributions from disorder described with the supercell approach, by mapping ("un…
The band structure of graphene ribbons with zigzag edges have two valleys well separated in momentum space, related to the two Dirac points of the graphene spectrum. The propagating modes in each valley contain a single chiral mode originating from a partially flat band at band center. This feature gives rise to a perfectly conducting channel in the disordered system, if the impurity scattering does not connect the two valleys, i.e. for long-range impurity potentials. Ribbons with short-range impurity potentials, however, through inter-valley scattering display ordinary localization behavior. …
The Berry-phase mediated valley-selected skew scattering in alpha-T3 lattices is demonstrated. The interplay of Lorentz and Berry forces in position and momentum spaces is revealed and analyzed. Many-body screening of the electron-impurity interaction is taken into account to avoid overestimation of back- and skew-scattering of electrons in the system. Triplet peak from skew interactions at two valleys is found in near-vertical and near-horizontal forward- and backward-scattering directions for small Berry phases and low magnetic fields. Magnetic-field dependence in both non-equilibrium and th…
We study massive Dirac fermion tunneling through time periodic potential in a silicene-based N-TP-N junction, where Ns are normal silicene regions and TP is the time periodic potential barrier. The fermions would absorb or emit photons due to the presence of the Floquet sidebands created in the TP. The nearly perfect spin-valley-sideband filtering is predicted. Applying only the exchange field leads to just only the electron absorbing a single photon almost purely allowed to tunnel through the junction for the large electric field. Reversing direction of electric field can select spin of the a…
We study the conductivity of disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons in the incoherent regime by using the Boltzmann equation approach. The band structure of zigzag nanoribbons contains two energy valleys, and each valley has an excess one-way channel. The crucial point is that the numbers of conducting channels for two propagating directions are imbalanced in each valley due to the presence of an excess one-way channel. It was pointed out that as a consequence of this imbalance, a perfectly conducting channel is stabilized in the coherent regime if intervalley scattering is absent. We show tha…
We study the interplay between a Kekulé patterned distortion in monolayer graphene and a monochromatic laser irradiation, focusing in the long wavelength approximation of its Landau level structure. Exploiting the symmetries of the system, we calculate in the static regime an exact analytical solution for the energy spectrum and its eigenstates, which in turn allows us to find close expressions for the polarizations in the valley and pseudospin degrees of freedom. We find that due to the valley-momentum coupling, the valley polarization exhibits a distinct magnetic response for the two $K$-val…
The discovery of the integer quantum Hall effect in the early eighties of the last century, with highly precise quantization values for the Hall conductance in multiples of $e^2/h$, has been the first fascinating manifestation of the topological state of matter driven by magnetic field and disorder, and related to the formation of non-dissipative current flow. In 2005, several new phenomena such as the spin Hall effect and the quantum spin Hall effect were predicted in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and vanishing external magnetic field. More recently, the Zeeman spin Hall effect a…
We develop a valley-dependent envelope function theory that can describe the effects of arbitrary configurations of interface steps and miscuts on the qubit relaxation time. For a given interface roughness, we show how our theory can be used to find the valley-dependent dipole matrix elements, the valley splitting, and the spin-valley coupling as a function of the electromagnetic fields in a Si/SiGe quantum dot spin qubit. We demonstrate that our theory can quantitatively reproduce and explain the result of experimental measurements for the spin relaxation time with only a minimal set of free …
The coupling of spin and valley physics is nowadays regarded as a promising route toward next-generation spintronic and valleytronic devices. In the aim of engineering functional properties for valleytronic applications, we focus on the ferroelectric heterostructure BiAlO3/BiIrO3, where the complex interplay among trigonal crystal field, layer degrees of freedom and spin-orbit coupling mediates a strong spin-valley coupling. Furthermore, we show that ferroelectricity provides a non-volatile handle to manipulate and switch the emerging valley-contrasting spin polarization.
We propose a physical model based on disordered (a hole punched inside a material) monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to demonstrate a large-gap quantum valley Hall insulator. We find an emergence of bound states lying inside the bulk gap of the TMDs. They are strongly affected by spin-valley coupling, rest- and kinetic- mass terms and the hole size. In addition, in the whole range of the hole size, at least two in-gap bound states with opposite angular momentum, circulating around the edge of the hole, exist. Their topological insulator (TI) feature is analyzed by the Chern num…
We study the role of electronic spin and valley symmetry in the quantum interference (QI) patterns of the transmission function in graphene quantum junctions. In particular, we link it to the position of the destructive QI anti-resonances. When the spin or valley symmetry is preserved, electrons with opposite spin or valley display the same interference pattern. On the other hand, when a symmetry is lifted the anti-resonances are split, with a consequent dramatic differentiation of the transport properties in the respective channel. We demonstrate rigorously this link in terms of the analytica…
A simple Kronig-Penney model is used to study the effect of nonlinear interactions on the electronic properties of ordered and disordered electrified chains. In the case of ordered potentials, we found that the nonlinearity suppresses the Wannier-Stark effect caused by the electric field. In the case of disordered potentials, the nonlinearity gives rise to a transition from superlocalized to weakly localized states.
The interplay between topology and valley degree of freedom has attracted much interest because it can realize new phenomena and applications. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we demonstrate intrinsically valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall effect in monolayer ferrovalley material: Janus VSiGeN4, of which the edge states are chiral-spin-valley locking. Besides, a small tensile or compressive strain can drive phase transition in the material from valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall state to half-valley-metal state. With the increase of the strain, the material turns into fe…
An established way of realizing topologically protected states in a two-dimensional electron gas is by applying a perpendicular magnetic field thus creating quantum Hall edge channels. In electrostatically gapped bilayer graphene intriguingly, even in the absence of a magnetic field topologically protected electronic states can emerge at naturally occurring stacking domain walls. While individually both types of topologically protected states have been investigated, their intriguing interplay remains poorly understood. Here, we focus on the interplay between topological domain wall states and …
Understanding the ultrafast coupling and relaxation mechanisms between valleys in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors is of crucial interest for future valleytronic devices. Recent ultrafast pump-probe experiments showed an unintuitive significant bleaching at the excitonic $B$ transition after optical excitation of the energetically lower excitonic $A$ transition. Here, we present a possible microscopic explanation for this surprising effect. It is based on the joint action of exchange coupling and phonon-mediated thermalization into dark exciton states and does not involve a popul…
We investigate the influence of spin-orbit coupling on the Kondo effects in carbon nanotube quantum dots, using the numerical renormalization group technique. A sufficiently large spin-orbit coupling is shown to destroy the SU(4) Kondo effects at zero magnetic field, leaving only two SU(2) Kondo effects in the one- and three-electron Coulomb blockade valleys. On applying a finite magnetic field, two additional, spin-orbit induced SU(2) Kondo effects arise in the three- and two-electron valleys. Using physically realistic model parameters, we calculate the differential conductance over a range …
In the presence of external magnetic field the Fermi-liquid state supports oscillatory spin modes known as Silin modes. We predict the existence of the generalized Silin modes in a multivalley system, monolayer graphene. A gauge- and Berry-gauge- invariant kinetic equation for a multivalley Fermi liquid is developed and applied to the case of graphene with extrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The interplay of SOC and Berry curvature allows for the excitation of generalized Silin modes in the spin and valley-staggered-spin channels via an AC electric field. The resonant contributions from these…
Interface disorder and its effect on the valley degeneracy of the conduction band edge remains among the greatest theoretical challenges for understanding the operation of spin qubits in silicon. Here, we investigate a counterintuitive effect occurring at Si/SiO2 interfaces. By applying tight binding methods, we show that intrinsic interface states can hybridize with conventional valley states, leading to a large ground state energy gap. The effects of hybridization have not previously been explored in details for valley splitting. We find that valley splitting is enhanced in the presence of d…
In addition to spin, electrons in many materials possess an additional pseudo-spin degree of freedom known as 'valley'. In materials where the spin and valley degrees of freedom are weakly coupled, they can be both excited and controlled independently. In this work, we study a model describing the interplay of the spin and valley Hall effects in such two-dimensional materials. We demonstrate the emergence of an additional longitudinal neutral current that is both spin and valley polarized. The additional neutral current allows to control the spin density by tuning the magnitude of the valley H…
The energies of valley-orbit states in silicon quantum dots are determined by an as yet poorly understood interplay between interface roughness, orbital confinement, and electron interactions. Here, we report measurements of one- and two-electron valley-orbit state energies as the dot potential is modified by changing gate voltages, and we calculate these same energies using full configuration interaction calculations. The results enable an understanding of the interplay between the physical contributions and enable a new probe of the quantum well interface.
We study theoretically the \emph{return probability experiment}, used to measure the dephasing time $T_2^*$, in a double quantum dot (DQD) in semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with spin-orbit coupling and disorder induced valley mixing. Dephasing is due to hyperfine interaction with the spins of the ${}^{13}$C nuclei. Due to the valley and spin degrees of freedom four bounded states exist for any given longitudinal mode in the quantum dot. At zero magnetic field the spin-orbit coupling and the valley mixing split those four states into two Kramers doublets. The valley mixing term for a gi…
In graphene, the valleys represent spin-like quantities and can act as a physical resource in valley-based electronics to novel quantum computation schemes. Here we demonstrate a direct route to tune and read the valley quantum states of disordered graphene by measuring the mesoscopic conductance fluctuations. We show that the conductance fluctuations in graphene at low temperatures are reduced by a factor of four when valley triplet states are gapped in the presence of short range potential scatterers at high carrier densities. We also show that this implies a gate tunable universal symmetry …
In this work, the electrical properties of bilayer Antimonene with different stacking orders are studied. Density functional theory with van der Waals (vdW) correction is used to investigate the electrical performances. Two configurations demonstrate considerable bandgaps, whereas, the bandgaps are close to zero for other structures. The in-plane biaxial strain is applied to modify the electrical properties. The bandgap reaches a maximum at a specific strain level and then closes at more enormous compressive and tensile strains. The energy of three valleys ($Γ$, Q, and K) in the conduction ban…
Semiconducting ferromagnet-nonmagnet interfaces in van der Waals heterostructures present a unique opportunity to investigate magnetic proximity interactions dependent upon a multitude of phenomena including valley and layer pseudospins, moiré periodicity, or exceptionally strong Coulomb binding. Here, we report a charge-state dependency of the magnetic proximity effects between MoSe$_2$ and CrBr$_3$ in photoluminescence, whereby the valley polarization of the MoSe$_2$ trion state conforms closely to the local CrBr$_3$ magnetization, while the neutral exciton state remains insensitive to the f…
The low-energy spectrum of graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges (armchair nanoribbons) is described as the superposition of two non-equivalent Dirac points of graphene. In spite of the lack of well-separated two valley structures, the single-channel transport subjected to long-ranged impurities is nearly perfectly conducting, where the backward scattering matrix elements in the lowest order vanish as a manifestation of internal phase structures of the wavefunction. For multi-channel energy regime, however, the conventional exponential decay of the averaged conductance occurs. Since the int…
Understanding strongly interacting electrons enables the design of materials, nanostructures and devices. Developing this understanding relies on the ability to tune and control electron-electron interactions by, e.g., confining electrons to atomically thin layers of 2D crystals with reduced screening. The interplay of strong interactions on a hexagonal lattice with two nonequivalent valleys, topological moments, and the Ising-like spin-orbit interaction gives rise to a variety of phases of matter corresponding to valley and spin polarized broken symmetry states. In this work we describe a hig…
We study interacting Dirac quasiparticles in disordered graphene and find that an interplay between the unscreened Coulomb interactions and pseudo-relativistic quasiparticle kinematics can be best revealed in the ballistic regime, whereas in the diffusive limit the behavior is qualitatively (albeit, not quantitatively) similar to that of the ordinary 2DEG with parabolic dispersion. We calculate the quasiparticle width and density of states that can be probed by photoemission, tunneling, and magnetization measurements.
The interplay of massive electrons with spin-orbit coupling in bulk graphene results in a spin-valley dependent gap. Thus, a barrier with such properties can act as a filter, transmitting only opposite spins from opposite valleys. In this Letter we show that strain induced pseudomagnetic field in such a barrier will enforce opposite cyclotron trajectories for the filtered valleys, leading to their spatial separation. Since spin is coupled to the valley in the filtered states, this also leads to spin separation, demonstrating a spin-valley filtering effect. The filtering behavior is found to be…
Numerical calculations have been performed to elucidate unconventional electronic transport properties in disordered nanographene ribbons with zigzag edges (zigzag ribbons). The energy band structure of zigzag ribbons has two valleys that are well separated in momentum space, related to the two Dirac points of the graphene spectrum. The partial flat bands due to edge states make the imbalance between left- and right-going modes in each valley, {\it i.e.} appearance of a single chiral mode. This feature gives rise to a perfectly conducting channel in the disordered system, i.e. the average of c…
We propose, for the first time, a valley Seebeck effect in gate tunable zigzag graphene nanoribbons as a result of the interplay between thermal gradient and valleytronics. A pure valley current is further generated by the thermal gradient as well as the external bias. In a broad temperature range, the pure valley current is found to be linearly dependent on the temperature gradient while it increases with the increasing temperature of one lead for a fixed thermal gradient. A valley field effect transistor (FET) driven by the temperature gradient is proposed that can turn on and off the pure v…
Realizations of some topological phases in two-dimensional systems rely on the challenge of jointly incorporating spin-orbit and magnetic exchange interactions. Here, we predict the formation and control of a fully valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall effect in bilayer graphene, by separately imprinting spin-orbit and magnetic proximity effects in different layers. This results in varying spin splittings for the conduction and valence bands, which gives rise to a topological gap at a single Dirac cone. The topological phase can be controlled by a gate voltage and switched between valleys by…
We show theoretically that two-dimensional direct-gap semiconductors with a valley degree of freedom, including monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides and gapped bilayer graphene, have a longitudinal magnetoconductivity contribution that is odd in valley and odd in the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the system. Using a quantum kinetic theory we show how this valley-dependent magnetoconductivity arises from the interplay between the momentum-space Berry curvature of Bloch electrons, the presence of a magnetic field, and disorder scattering. We discuss how the effect can be measured…
We study the spin relaxation in graphene due to magnetic moments induced by defects. We propose and employ in our studies a microscopic model that describes magnetic impurity scattering processes mediated by charge puddles. This model incorporates the spin texture related to the defect-induced state. We calibrate our model parameters using experimentally-inferred values. The results we obtain for the spin relaxation times are in very good agreement with experimental findings. Our study leads to a comprehensive explanation for the short spin relaxation times reported in the experimental literat…
For Coulomb blockade peaks in the linear conductance of a quantum dot, we study the correction to the spacing between the peaks due to dot-lead coupling. This coupling can affect measurements in which Coulomb blockade phenomena are used as a tool to probe the energy level structure of quantum dots. The electron-electron interactions in the quantum dot are described by the constant exchange and interaction (CEI) model while the single-particle properties are described by random matrix theory. We find analytic expressions for both the average and rms mesoscopic fluctuation of the correction. For…
Quantum transport and spintronics regimes are studied in p- and n-doped atomic layers of hexagonal transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), subject to the interplay between the valley structure and spin-orbit coupling. We find how spin relaxation of carriers depends on their areal density and show that it vanishes for holes near the band edge, leading to the density-independent spin diffusion length, and we develop a theory of weak localisation/antilocalisation, describing the crossovers between the orthogonal, double-unitary and symplectic regimes of quantum transport in TMDCs.
We study the conductance of mesoscopic graphene rings in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field by means of numerical calculations based on a tight-binding model. First, we consider the magnetoconductance of such rings and observe the Aharonov-Bohm effect. We investigate different regimes of the magnetic flux up to the quantum Hall regime, where the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are suppressed. Results for both clean (ballistic) and disordered (diffusive) rings are presented. Second, we study rings with smooth mass boundary that are weakly coupled to leads. We show that the valley degener…
This work presents results of ab-initio simulations of continuous wave transport in disordered absorbing waveguides. Wave interference effects cause deviations from diffusive picture of wave transport and make the diffusion coefficient position- and absorption-dependent. As a consequence, the true limit of a zero diffusion coefficient is never reached in an absorbing random medium of infinite size, instead, the diffusion coefficient saturates at some finite constant value. Transition to this absorption-limited diffusion exhibits a universality which can be captured within the framework of the …
We consider tunneling transport between two parallel graphene sheets where one is a single-layer sample and the other one a bilayer. In the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, the interplay between combined energy and momentum conservation in a tunneling event and the distinctive chiral nature of charge carriers in the two systems turns out to favor tunneling of electrons from one of the two valleys in the graphene Brillouin zone. Adjusting the field strength enables manipulation of the valley polarization of the current, which reaches its maximum value of 100% concomitantly with a maximum…
The absorption of heavily doped graphene in the terahertz (THz) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectral regions is considered taking into account both the elastic scattering due to finite-range disorder and the variations of concentration due to long-range disorder. Interplay between intra- and interband transitions is analyzed for the high-frequency regime of response, near the Pauli blocking threshold. The gate voltage and temperature dependencies of the absorption efficiency are calculated. It is demonstrated that for typical parameters, the smearing of the interband absorption edge is determined b…
We study electron transport properties of a monoatomic graphite layer (graphene) with different types of disorder at half filling. We show that the transport properties of the system depend strongly on the symmetry of disorder. We find that the localization is ineffective if the randomness preserves one of the chiral symmetries of the clean Hamiltonian or does not mix valleys. We obtain the exact value of minimal conductivity $4e^2/πh$ in the case of chiral disorder. For long-range disorder (decoupled valleys), we derive the effective field theory. In the case of smooth random potential, it is…
In this theoretical study we qualitatively and quantitatively investigate the electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR) in a single Si/SiGe quantum dot in the presence of a magnetic field gradient, e.g., produced by a ferromagnet. We model a situation in which the control of electron spin states is achieved by applying an oscillatory electric field, inducing real-space oscillations of the electron inside the quantum dot. One of the goals of our study is to present a microscopic theory of valley dependent $g$-factors in Si/SiGe quantum dots and investigate how valley relaxation combined with a vall…
In this letter, we address the chiral properties of valley exciton-polaritons in a monolayer of WS2 in the regime of strong light-matter coupling with a Tamm-Plasmon resonance. We observe that the valley polarization, which manifests in the circular polarization of the emitted photoluminescence, is strongly enhanced in comparison to bare WS2 monolayers, and can even be observed under non-resonant excitation at ambient conditions. We study the relaxation and decay dynamics of exciton-polaritons in our device, and present a microscopic model to explain the wave vector-dependent valley depolariza…
In monolayer group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC), charge carriers have spin and valley degrees of freedom, both associated with magnetic moments. On the other hand, the layer degree of freedom in multilayers is associated with electrical polarization. Here, we show that TMDC bilayers offer an unprecedented platform to realize a strong coupling between the spin, layer pseudospin, and valley degrees of freedom of holes. Such coupling not only gives rise to the spin Hall effect and spin circular dichroism in inversion symmetric bilayer, but also leads to a variety of magnetoelectric …
Topological insulators are bulk semiconductors that manifest in-gap massless Dirac surface states due to the topological bulk-boundary correspondence principle [1-3]. These surface states have been a subject of tremendous ongoing interest, due both to their intrinsic properties and to higher order emergence phenomena that can be achieved by manipulating the interface environment [4-11]. Here, angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectromicroscopy and supplementary scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) are performed on the model topological insulator Bi2Se3 to investigate the interplay of crystal…
Using the Feynman diagram techniques, we derive the finite-temperature conductivity and magnetoconductivity formulas from the quantum interference and electron-electron interaction, for a three-dimensional disordered Weyl semimetal. For a single valley of Weyl fermions, we find that the magnetoconductivity is negative and proportional to the square root of magnetic field at low temperatures, as a result of the weak antilocalization. By including the contributions from the weak antilocalization, Berry curvature correction, and Lorentz force, we compare the calculated magnetoconductivity with a …
