In this work, the electrical properties of bilayer Antimonene with different stacking orders are studied. Density functional theory with van der Waals (vdW) correction is used to investigate the electrical performances. Two configurations demonstrate considerable bandgaps, whereas, the bandgaps are close to zero for other structures. The in-plane biaxial strain is applied to modify the electrical properties. The bandgap reaches a maximum at a specific strain level and then closes at more enormous compressive and tensile strains. The energy of three valleys ($Γ$, Q, and K) in the conduction band are explored with the strain. The conduction band minimum switches between these valleys with the strain. Two bands also contribute to the valence band maximum, and the energy of these two bands for various strains is investigated. Finally, the effective mass for the valleys of the conduction band and the valence band are obtained. The effective mass at $Γ$-valley demonstrates the lowest effective mass.
For two-dimensional superconductors, the high stability in ambient conditions is critical for experiments and applications. Few-layer antimonene can be non-degradative over a couple of months, which is superior to the akin black phosphorus. Based on the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory and maximally-localised Wannier functions, this work predicts that electron-doping and Ca-intercalation can transform $β$-Sb bilayer from a semimetal to a superconductor. However, the stability of antimonene bilayer in air trends to be decreased due to the electron doping. To overcome this drawback, two kind…
We derive a general relation between the stacking vector ${\bf u}$ describing the relative shift of two layers of bilayer graphene and the Chern index. We find $C = ν- \text{sign}\left(|V_{AB}|-|V_{BA}|\right)$, where $ν$ is a valley index and $|V_{αβ}|$ the absolute value of stacking potentials that depend on ${\bf u}$ and that uniquely determine the interlayer interaction; AA stacking plays no role in the topological character. With this expression we show that while ideal and relaxed minimally twisted bilayer graphene appear so distinct as to be almost different materials, their Chern index…
We use a theoretical approach to reveal the electronic and structural properties of molybdenum impurities between MoS$_{2}$ bilayers. We find that interstitial Mo impurities are able to reverse the well-known stability order of the pristine bilayer, because the most stable form of stacking changes from AA' (undoped) into AB (doped). The occurrence of Mo impurities in different positions shows their split electronic levels in the energy gap, following octahedral and tetrahedral crystal fields. The energy stability is related to the accommodation of Mo impurities compacted in hollow sites betwee…
Graphene, as an atomic-thick ultrasoft membrane, almost has no resistance against out-of-plane deformations and, therefore, it is always wrinkled to a certain degree. Recently, corrugated structures and their effects on the electronic properties of monolayer graphene have been studied extensively. However, similar experimental studies in bilayer graphene have yet to be reported. Here, we show that corrugations in bilayer graphene can generate incommensurate stacking solitons (domain walls) between commensurate Bernal-stacked domains. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we microscopically s…
Diverse interlayer tunability of physical properties of two-dimensional layers mostly lies in the covalent-like quasi-bonding that is significant in electronic structures but rather weak for energetics. Such characteristics result in various stacking orders that are energetically comparable but may significantly differ in terms of electronic structures, e.g. magnetism. Inspired by several recent experiments showing interlayer anti-ferromagnetically coupled CrI3 bilayers, we carried out first-principles calculations for CrI3 bilayers. We found that the anti-ferromagnetic coupling results from a…
We investigate the magnetotransport properties of quasi-free standing epitaxial graphene bilayer on SiC, grown by atmospheric pressure graphitization in Ar, followed by H$_2$ intercalation. At the charge neutrality point the longitudinal resistance shows an insulating behavior, which follows a temperature dependence consistent with variable range hopping transport in a gapped state. In a perpendicular magnetic field, we observe quantum Hall states (QHSs) both at filling factors ($ν$) multiple of four ($ν=4, 8, 12$), as well as broken valley symmetry QHSs at $ν=0$ and $ν=6$. These results unamb…
The electronic properties and optical excitations are investigated in the geometry- and field-modulated bilayer graphene systems, respectively, by using the tight-binding model and Kubo formula. The stacking symmetry of bilayer graphene can be manipulated by varying the width and position of domain wall (DW) within two normally stacked graphene. All the layer-dependent atomic interactions are taken into consideration under external fields. The modulation of stacking configuration gives rise to significant effects of zone folding on energy subbands, subenvelope wave functions, density of states…
The effect of the number of stacking layers and the type of stacking on the electronic and optical properties of bilayer and trilayer black phosphorus are investigated by using first principles calcula- tions within the framework of density functional theory. We find that inclusion of many body effects (i.e., electron-electron and electron-hole interactions) modifies strongly both the electronic and opti- cal properties of black phosphorus. While trilayer black phosphorus with a particular stacking type is found to be a metal by using semilocal functionals, it is predicted to have an electroni…
It is well established that some kinds of lattice deformations in graphene monolayer, which change electron hopping in sublattice and affect in-plane motion of electrons, may induce out-of-plane pseudo-magnetic fields as large as 100 T. Here, we demonstrate that stacking misorientation in graphene bilayers mimics the effect of huge in-plane pseudo-magnetic fields greater than 1000 T on the interlayer hopping of electrons. As well as addressing the similarity between the effect of in-plane pseudo-magnetic fields and twisting on the electronic band structure of Bernal graphene bilayer, we point …
2D ferroelectrics with robust polarization down to atomic thicknesses provide novel building blocks for functional heterostructures. Experimental reports, however, remain scarce because of the requirement of a layered polar crystal. Here, we demonstrate a rational design approach to engineering 2D ferroelectrics from a non-ferroelectric parent compound via employing van der Waals assembly. Parallel-stacked bilayer boron nitride is shown to exhibit out-of-plane electric polarization that reverses depending on the stacking order. The polarization switching is probed via the resistance of an adja…
Twisted layers of atomically thin two-dimensional materials realize a broad range of novel quantum materials with engineered optical and transport phenomena arising from spin and valley degrees of freedom and strong electron correlations in hybridized interlayer bands. Here, we report experimental and theoretical studies of WSe$_2$ homobilayers obtained in two stable configurations of 2H ($60^\circ$ twist) and 3R ($0^\circ$ twist) stackings by controlled chemical vapor synthesis of high-quality large-area crystals. Using optical absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy at cryogenic temper…
Stacking two-dimensional layered materials such as graphene and transitional metal dichalcogenides with nonzero interlayer twist angles has recently become attractive because of the emergence of novel physical properties. Stacking of one-dimensional nanomaterials offers the lateral stacking offset as an additional parameter for modulating the resulting material properties. Here, we report that the edge states of twisted bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbons (TBZGNRs) can be tuned with both the twist angle and the stacking offset. Strong edge state variations in the stacking region are first reve…
Crystal symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) materials plays an important role in their electronic and optical properties. Engineering symmetry in 2D materials has recently emerged as a promising way to achieve novel properties and functions. The noncentrosymmetric structure of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), has allowed for valley control via circularly polarized optical excitation. In bilayer TMDCs, inversion symmetry can be controlled by varying the stacking sequence, thus providing a pathway to engineer valley selectivity. Here, we repor…
We report the connection between the stacking order and magnetic properties of bilayer CrI$_3$ using first-principles calculations. We show that the stacking order defines the magnetic ground state. By changing the interlayer stacking order one can tune the interlayer exchange interaction between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic. To measure the predicted stacking-dependent magnetism, we propose using linear magnetoelectric effect. Our results not only gives a possible explanation for the observed antiferromagnetism in bilayer CrI$_3$ but also have direct implications in heterostructures mad…
We present a theoretical study on the electron transmission through the AB-BA stacking boundary in multilayer graphene. Using the tight-binding model and the transfer matrix method, we calculate the electron transmission probability through the boundary as a function of electron Fermi energy in multilayers from bilayer to five-layer. We find that the transmission is strongly suppressed particularly near the band touching point, suggesting that the electronic conductivity in general multilayer graphenes is significantly interfered by stacking fault. The conductivity suppression by stacking faul…
Motivated by the potential of atomically-thin magnets towards tunable high-frequency magnonics, we detail the spin-wave dispersion of bilayer CrI$_3$. We demonstrate that the magnonic behavior of the bilayer strongly depends on its stacking configuration and the interlayer magnetic ordering, where a topological bandgap opens in the dispersion caused by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Kitaev interactions, classifying bilayer CrI$_3$ as a topological magnon insulator. We further reveal that both size and topology of the bandgap in a CrI$_3$ bilayer with an antiferromagnetic interlayer ordering are…
Chromium trihalides, CrX$_3$ (with X = Cl, Br, I), are a family of layered magnetic materials that can be easily exfoliated to provide ferromagnetic monolayers. When two layers are stacked together to form a bilayer the interlayer exchange coupling can be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic depending on the stacking sequence. Here we combine crystallographic arguments based on the close-packing condition with first-principles simulations to enumerate all possible stacking patterns in CrX$_3$ bilayers that preserve the spatial periodicity of each layer. We recover all configurations obser…
The stacking orders in layered hexagonal boron nitride bulk and bilayers are studied using high-level ab initio theory (local second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory, LMP2). Our results show that both electrostatic and London dispersion interactions are responsible for interlayer distance and stacking order, with AA' being the most stable one. The minimum energy sliding path includes only the AA' high-symmetry stacking, and the energy barrier is 3.4 meV per atom for the bilayer. State-of-the-art Density-functionals with and without London dispersion correction fail to correctly describ…
Bilayer borophene has recently attracted much interest due to its outstanding mechanical and electronic properties. The interlayer interactions of these bilayers are reported differently in theoretical and experimental studies. Herein, we design and investigate bilayer beta12-borophene, by first-principles calculations. Our results show that the interlayer distance of the relaxed AA-stacked bilayer is about 2.5 A, suggesting a van der Waals (vdW) interlayer interaction. However, this is not supported by previous experiments, therefore by constraining the interlayer distance, we propose a prefe…
Using bilayer CrI$_3$ as an example, we demonstrate that stacking domain walls in van der Waals magnets can host one dimensional (1D) magnon channels, which have lower energies than bulk magnons. Interestingly, some magnon channels are hidden in magnetically homogeneous background and can only be inferred with the knowledge of stacking domain walls. Compared to 1D magnons confined in magnetic domain walls, 1D magnons in stacking domain walls are more stable against external perturbations. We show that the relaxed moiré superlattices of small-angle twisted bilayer CrI$_3$ is a natural realizati…
High-level first-principles computations predict blue phosphorene bilayer to be a two-dimensional metal. This structure has not been considered before and was identified by employing a block-diagram scheme that yields the complete set of five high-symmetry stacking configurations of buckled honeycomb layers, and allows their unambiguous classification. We show that all of these stacking configurations are stable or at least metastable configurations both for blue phosphorene and gray arsenene bilayers. For blue phosphorene, the most stable stacking configuration has not yet been reported, and …
Strain, both naturally occurring and deliberately engineered, can have a considerable effect on the structural and electronic properties of 2D and layered materials. Uniaxial or biaxial heterostrain modifies the stacking arrangement of bilayer graphene (BLG) which subsequently influences the electronic structure of the bilayer. Here, we use Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the interplay between an external applied heterostrain and the resulting stacking in BLG. We determine how a strain applied to one layer is transferred to a second, 'free' layer and at what critica…
Correct defect quantification in graphene samples is crucial both for fundamental and applied re-search. Raman spectroscopy represents the most widely used tool to identify defects in graphene. However, despite its extreme importance the relation between the Raman features and the amount of defects in multilayered graphene samples has not been experimentally verified. In this study we intentionally created defects in single layer graphene, turbostratic bilayer graphene and Bernal stacked bilayer graphene by oxygen plasma. By employing isotopic labelling, our study reveals substantial differenc…
Realization of high-quality van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with tailored properties by stacking two-dimensional (2D) layers requires atomically clean interfaces. Because of strong adhesion between the constituent layers, the vdW forces could drive trapped contaminants together into submicron-size bubbles, which leaves large interfacial areas atomically clean. Such a phenomenon is dubbed self-cleaning mechanism in 2D systems. Here, we demonstrate the breakdown of self-cleaning mechanism for nanoscale interfacial bubbles in tiny-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). In the tiny-angle TBG, …
We present a compositional and structural investigation of silicene, germanene, and stanene bilayers from first-principles. Due to the staggering of the individual layers, several stacking patterns are possible, most of which are not available to the bilayer graphene. This structural variety, in conjunction with the presence of the spin-orbit coupling, unveil a diversity of the electronic properties, with the appearance of distinct band features, including orbital hybridization and band inversion. We show that for particular cases, the intrinsic spin Hall response exhibits signatures of non-tr…
Bilayer graphene (BLG) with a tunable bandgap appears interesting as an alternative to graphene for practical applications, thus its transport properties are being actively pursued. Using density functional theory and perturbation analysis, we investigated, under an external electric field, the electronic properties of BLGs in various stackings relevant to recently observed complex structures. We established the first phase diagram summarizing the stacking-dependent gap openings of BLGs for a given field. We further identified high-density midgap states, localized on grain boundaries, even und…
Interlayer rotation and stacking were recently demonstrated as effective strategies for tuning physical properties of various two-dimensional materials. The latter strategy was mostly realized in hetero-structures with continuously varied stacking orders, which obscure the revelation of the intrinsic role of a certain stacking order in its physical properties. Here, we introduce inversion-domain-boundaries into molecular-beam-epitaxy grown MoSe2 homo-bilayers, which induce unusual-fractional lattice translations to their surrounding domains, accounting for the observed diversity of large-area …
Voltages generated from inverse spin Hall and anisotropic magneto-resistance effects via spin pumping in ferromagnetic (F)/non-magnetic (N) bilayers are investigated by means of a broadband ferromagnetic resonance approach. Varying the non-magnetic layer thickness enables the determination of the spin diffusion length in Pd of 5.5 +/- 0.5 nm. We also observe a systematic change of the voltage lineshape when reversing the stacking order of the F/N bilayer, which is qualitatively consistent with expectations from spin Hall effects. However, even after independent calibration of the precession an…
The generalized tight-binding model is developed to investigate the magneto-electronic properties in twisted bilayer graphene system. All the interlayer and intralayer atomic interactions are included in the Moire superlattice. The twisted bilayer graphene system is a zero-gap semiconductor with double-degenerate Dirac-cone structures, and saddle-point energy dispersions appearing at low energies for cases of small twisting angles. There exist rich and unique magnetic quantization phenomena, in which many Landau-level subgroups are induced due to specific Moire zone folding through modulating …
The twist angle between the monolayers in van der Waals heterostructures provides a new degree of freedom in tuning material properties. We compare the optical properties of WSe2 homobilayers with 2H and 3R stacking using photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, and reflectance contrast measurements under ambient and cryogenic temperatures. Clear stacking- dependent differences are evident for all temperatures, with both photoluminescence and reflectance contrast spectra exhibiting a blue shift in spectral features in 2H compared to 3R bilayers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations eluci…
Excitons in monolayer semiconductors have large optical transition dipole for strong coupling with light field. Interlayer excitons in heterobilayers, with layer separation of electron and hole components, feature large electric dipole that enables strong coupling with electric field and exciton-exciton interaction, at the cost that the optical dipole is substantially quenched (by several orders of magnitude). In this letter, we demonstrate the ability to create a new class of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero- and homo-bilayers that combines the advantages of monolayer-…
The existence of Bloch flat bands provides an facile pathway to realize strongly correlated phenomena in materials. Using density-functional theory and tight-binding approach, we show that the flat bands can form in twisted bilayer of hexagonal boron nitride ($h$BN). However, unlike the twisted graphene bilayer where a magic angle is needed to form the flat band, for the polar $h$BN, the flat bands can appear as long as the twisted angle is less than certain critical values. Our simulations reveal that the valence band maximum (conduction band minimum) states are predominantly resided in the r…
Experiments on bilayer graphene unveiled a fascinating realization of stacking disorder where triangular domains with well-defined Bernal stacking are delimited by a hexagonal network of strain solitons. Here we show by means of numerical simulations that this is a consequence of a structural transformation of the moiré pattern inherent of twisted bilayer graphene taking place at twist angles $θ$ below a crossover angle $θ^{\star}=1.2^{\circ}$. The transformation is governed by the interplay between the interlayer van der Waals interaction and the in-plane strain field, and is revealed by a ch…
The optical conductivities of graphene layers are strongly dependent on their stacking orders. Our first-principle calculations show that while the optical conductivities of single layer graphene (SLG) and bilayer graphene (BLG) with Bernal stacking are almost frequency independent in the visible region, the optical conductivity of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is frequency dependent, giving rise to additional absorption features due to the band folding effect. Experimentally, we obtain from contrast spectra the optical conductivity profiles of BLG with different stacking geometries. Some TBG…
Since the discovery of superconductive twisted bilayer graphene which initiated the field of twistronics, moiré systems have not ceased to exhibit fascinating properties. We demonstrate that in boron nitride twisted bilayers, for a given moiré periodicity, there are five different stackings which preserve the monolayer hexagonal symmetry (i.e. the invariance upon rotations of 120$^\circ$) and not only two as always discussed in literature. We introduce some definitions and a nomenclature that identify unambiguously the twist angle and the stacking sequence of any hexagonal bilayer with order-3…
