Voltage control effects provide an energy-efficient means of tailoring material properties, especially in highly integrated nanoscale devices. However, only insulating and semiconducting systems can be controlled so far. In metallic systems, there is no electric field due to electron screening effects and thus no such control effect exists. Here we demonstrate that metallic systems can also be controlled electrically through ionic not electronic effects. In a Pt/Co structure, the control of the metallic Pt/Co interface can lead to unprecedented control effects on the magnetic properties of the entire structure. Consequently, the magnetization and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the Co layer can be independently manipulated to any desired state, the efficient spin toques can be enhanced about 3.5 times, and the switching current can be reduced about one order of magnitude. This ability to control a metallic system may be extended to control other physical phenomena.
Recent studies rediscovered the crucial role of field-like spin orbit torque (SOT) in nanosecond-timescale SOT dynamics. However, there is not yet an effective way to control its relative amplitude. Here, we experimentally modulate the field-like SOT in W/CoFeB/MgO trilayers through tuning the interfacial spin accumulation. By performing spin Hall magnetoresistance measurement, we find that the CoFeB with enhanced spin dephasing, either generated from larger layer thickness or from proper annealing, can distinctly boost the spin absorption and enhance the interfacial spin mixing conductance G_…
We investigate thermoelectric properties of a ferromagnet-superconductor hybrid structure with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and delta function potential barrier at the interfacial layer. The exponential rise of thermal conductance with temperature manifests a cross-over temperature scale separating two opposite behaviors of it with the change of polarization in the ferromagnet whereas the inclusion of interfacial Rashba spin-orbit field results in a non-monotonic behavior of it with the strength of Rashba field. We employ scattering matrix approach to determine the amplitudes of all the scatt…
We measure the spin-charge interconversion by the spin Hall effect in ferromagnetic/Pt nanodevices. The extracted effective spin Hall angles (SHAs) of Pt evolve drastically with the ferromagnetic (FM) materials (CoFe, Co, and NiFe), when assuming transparent interfaces and a bulk origin of the spin injection/detection by the FM elements. By carefully measuring the interface resistance, we show that it is quite large and cannot be neglected. We then evidence that the spin injection/detection at the FM/Pt interfaces are dominated by the spin polarization of the interfaces. We show that interfaci…
We investigate the effect of capping layer (CAP) on the interfacial magnetic anisotropy energy density (K_S), magnetic damping (α), and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy-metal (Pt) / ferromagnet (Co or Py) / CAP (MgO/Ta, HfOx, or TaN). At room temperature (RT) the CAP materials influence the effective magnitude of K_S, which is associated with a formation of interfacial magnetic oxides. The dynamical dissipation parameters of Co are considerably influenced by the CAP (especially MgO) while those of Py are not. This is possibly due to an extra magnetic damping via spin-pumping process across t…
The thickness dependence of spin-orbit torque and magnetoresistance in ferromagnet/heavy-metal bilayers is studied using the first-principles non-equilibrium Green's function formalism combined with the Anderson disorder model. A systematic expansion in orthogonal vector spherical harmonics is used for the angular dependence of the torque. The damping-like torque in Co/Pt and Co/Au bilayers can be described as a sum of the spin-Hall contribution, which increases with thickness in agreement with the spin-diffusion model, and a comparable interfacial contribution. The magnetoconductance in the p…
Combined measurements of normal and inverted Hanle effects in CoFe/MgO/semiconductor (SC) contacts reveal the effect of spin relaxation rate on the interfacial spin depolarization (ISD) from local magnetic fields. Despite the similar ferromagnetic electrode and interfacial roughness in both CoFe/MgO/Si and CoFe/MgO/Ge contacts, we have observed clearly different features of the ISD depending on the host SC. The precession and relaxation of spins in different SCs exposed to the local fields from more or less the same ferromagnets give rise to a notably different ratio of the inverted Hanle sign…
Effective interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and skyrmion stabilization in ferromagnet/paramagnet and ferromagnet/superconductor hybrid systems
At the interface between a nonmagnetic metal (NM) and a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) spin current can interact with the magnetization, leading to a modulation of the spin current. The interfacial exchange field at these FI-NM interfaces can be probed by placing the interface in contact with the spin transport channel of a lateral spin valve (LSV) device and observing additional spin relaxation processes. We study interfacial exchange field in lateral spin valve devices where Cu spin transport channel is in proximity with ferromagnetic insulator EuS (EuS-LSV) and yttrium iron garnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$…
Spin-dependent transport at heavy metal/magnetic insulator interfaces is at the origin of many phenomena at the forefront of spintronics research. A proper quantification of the different interfacial spin conductances is crucial for many applications. Here, we report the first measurement of the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) of Pt on a purely ferromagnetic insulator (EuS). We perform SMR measurements in a wide range of temperatures and fit the results by using a microscopic model. From this fitting procedure we obtain the temperature dependence of the spin conductances ($G_s$, $G_r$ and $G…
Finding efficient ways of manipulating magnetic bits is one of the core goals in spintronic research. Electrically-generated spin-orbit torques (SOTs) are good candidates for this and the search for materials capable of generating highly-efficient SOTs has gained a lot of traction in the recent years. While antiferromagnet/ferromagnet bilayer structures have been employed extensively for passive applications, e.g. by using exchange bias fields, their active properties are not yet widely employed. Here we show the presence of large interfacial SOTs in bilayer of a ferromagnet and the two-dimens…
Thin films of Topological insulators (TIs) coupled with ferromagnets (FMs) are excellent candidates for energy-efficient spintronics devices. Here, the effect of crystalline structural disorder of TI on interfacial and magnetic properties of sputter-deposited TI/FM, Bi2Te3/Ni80Fe20, heterostructures is reported. Ni and a smaller amount of Fe from Py was found to diffuse across the interface and react with Bi2Te3. For highly crystalline c-axis oriented Bi2Te3 films, a giant enhancement in Gilbert damping is observed, accompanied by an effective out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and enhanced damp…
Current induced spin-orbit magnetic fields (iSOFs), arising either in single-crystalline ferromagnets with broken inversion symmetry1,2 or in non-magnetic metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayers3,4, can produce spin-orbit torques which act on a ferromagnet's magnetization, thus offering an efficient way for its manipulation. To further reduce power consumption in spin-orbit torque devices, it is highly desirable to control iSOFs by the field-effect, where power consumption is determined by charging/discharging a capacitor5,6. In particular, efficient electric-field control of iSOFs acting on ferromag…
We study the role of thermal magnons in the spin and heat transport across a normal-metal/insulating-ferromagnet interface, which is beyond an elastic electronic spin transfer. Using an interfacial exchange Hamiltonian, which couples spins of itinerant and localized orbitals, we calculate spin and energy currents for an arbitrary interfacial temperature difference and misalignment of spin accumulation in the normal metal relative to the ferromagnetic order. The magnonic contribution to spin current leads to a temperature-dependent torque on the magnetic order parameter; reciprocally, the coher…
In ferromagnetic thin films, broken inversion symmetry and spin-orbit coupling give rise to interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Analytic expressions for spin-wave properties show that the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction leads to non-reciprocal spin-wave propagation, i.e. different properties for spin waves propagating in opposite directions. In favorable situations, it can increase the spin-wave attenuation length. Comparing measured spin wave properties in ferromagnet$|$normal metal bilayers and other artificial layered structures with these calculations can provide …
Controlled spin transport in magnetic stacks is required to realize pure spin current-driven logic and memory devices. The control over the generation and detection of the pure spin current is achieved by tuning the spin to charge conversion efficiency of the heavy metal interfacing with ferromagnets. Here, we demonstrate the direct tunability of spin angular momentum transfer and thereby spin pumping, in CoFeB/Pt stack, with interfacial magnetic anisotropy. The ultra-low thickness of CoFeB thin film tilts the magnetic easy axis from in-plane to out-of-plane due to surface anisotropy. The Ferr…
Due to its low intrinsic damping, Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ and its substituted variations are often used for ferromagnetic layer at spin pumping experiment. Spin pumping is an interfacial spin current generation in the interface of ferromagnet and non-magnetic metal, governed by spin mixing conductance parameter $G^{\uparrow\downarrow}$. $G^{\uparrow\downarrow}$ has been shown to enhance the damping of the ferromagnetic layer. The theory suggested that the effect of $G^{\uparrow\downarrow}$ on gyromagnetic ratio only come from its negligible imaginary part. In this article, we show that the differe…
We predict a magnetoresistance induced by the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling in normal metal|ferromagnetic insulator bilayer. It depends on the angle between current and magnetization directions identically to the "spin Hall magnetoresistance" mechanism caused by a combined action of spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects. Due to the identical phenomenology it is not obvious whether the magnetoresistance reported by Nakayama et al. is a bulk metal or interface effect. The interfacial Rashba induced magnetoresistance may be distinguished from the bulk metal spin Hall magnetoresistance …
Combining the first-principles noncollinear calculations of scattering matrices with Andreev approximation, we investigated the spin-triplet Andreev reflection (AR) spectra for the interface between half-metallic ferromagnet Co$_{2}$MnSi and \emph{s}-wave BCS superconductor Al with and without interfacial roughness, where the orientations of magnetic moments near the interface are randomly distributed. The calculated results show that the AR spectra have peak structures near zero bias for the clean interface with relative weak magnetic disorder. With increasing the degree of interfacial roughn…
We report the observation of a Pt layer thickness dependence on the induced interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ultra-thin Pt($d_{\text{Pt}}$)/CoFeB films. Taking advantage of the large spin-orbit coupling of the heavy metal, the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is quantified by Brillouin light scattering measurements of the frequency non-reciprocity of spin-waves in the ferromagnet. The magnitude of the induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling is found to saturate to a value $0.45$ mJ$/$m${}^2$ for Pt thicknesses larger than $\sim 2$ nm. The experimental results are ex…
The ability of spin-orbit interactions to convert charge current into spin current, most often in the bulk of heavy metal thin films, has been the hallmark of spintronics in the last decade. In this study, we demonstrate how the insertion of light metal element interface profoundly affects both the nature of spin-orbit torque and its efficiency in terms of damping-like ($H_{\text{DL}}$) and field-like ($H_{\text{FL}}$) effective fields in ultrathin Co ferromagnet. Indeed, we measure unexpectedly large $H_{\text{FL}}$/$H_{\text{DL}}$ ratio ($\sim$2.5) upon inserting a 1.4 nm thin Al layer in Pt…

We study the magnetic anisotropy which arises at the interface between a thin film ferromagnet and a 3-d Rashba material. The 3-d Rashba material is characterized by the spin-orbit strength $α$ and the direction of broken bulk inversion symmetry $\hat n$. We find an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy in the $\hat{z}\times\hat{n}$ direction, where $\hat z$ is the interface normal. For realistic values of $α$, the uniaxial anisotropy is of a similar order of magnitude as the bulk magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Evaluating the uniaxial anisotropy for a simplified model in 1-d shows that for small band f…
A spin current through a ferromagnet/heavy-metal interface may shrink due to the spin-flip at the interface, resulting in the spin-memory loss. Here we propose a mechanism of the spin-memory loss. In contrast to other mechanisms based on interfacial spin-orbit coupling, our mechanism is based on the bulk spin-orbit coupling in a heavy-metal. We demonstrate that the bulk spin-orbit coupling induces the entanglement between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom and this spin-orbital entanglement can give rise to sizable spin-flip at the interface even when the interfacial spin-orbit coupling i…
We consider a microscopic theory of F/S/F trilayers with metallic or insulating ferromagnets. The trilayer with metallic ferromagnets is controlled by the formation of non local pair correlations among the two ferromagnets which do not exist with insulating ferromagnets. The difference between the insulating and ferromagnetic models can be understood from lowest order diagrams. Metallic ferromagnets are controlled by non local pair correlations and the superconducting gap is larger if the ferromagnetic electrodes have a parallel spin orientation. Insulating ferromagnets are controlled by pair …
Spin relaxation torque ${\cal T}$ in uniform metallic ferromagnets with the spin-orbit interaction arising from random impurities is calculated microscopically. ${\cal T}$ is shown to be written by spatial derivatives of the electric field, but is not always given as a divergence of a torque dipole density. The result is due to the fast dissipation of the orbital angular momentum, and thus a conserving spin current cannot be defined. It is discussed that the $β$ term in the spin transfer torque can also be asymmetric.
We present a microscopic theory for magnetization relaxation in metallic ferromagnets of nanoscopic dimensions that is based on the dynamic spin response matrix in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Our approach allows the calculation of the spin excitation damping rate even for perfectly crystalline systems, where existing microscopic approaches fail. We demonstrate that the relaxation properties are not completely determined by the transverse susceptibility alone, and that the damping rate has a non-negligible frequency dependence in experimentally relevant situations. Our results indicate…
We present a phenomenological theory of spin-orbit torques in a metallic ferromagnet with spin-relaxing boundaries. The model is rooted in the coupled diffusion of charge and spin in the bulk of the ferromagnet, where we account for the anomalous Hall effects as well as the anisotropic magnetoresistance in the corresponding constitutive relations for both charge and spin sectors. The diffusion equations are supplemented with suitable boundary conditions reflecting the spin-sink capacity of the environment. In inversion-asymmetric heterostructures, the uncompensated spin accumulation exerts a d…
The properties of metal-semiconductor junctions are often unpredictable because of non-ideal interfacial structures, such as interfacial defects or chemical reactions introduced at junctions. Black phosphorus (BP), an elemental two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting crystal, possesses the puckered atomic structure with high chemical reactivity, and the establishment of a realistic atomic-scale picture of BP's interface toward metallic contact has remained elusive. Here we examine the interfacial structures and properties of physically-deposited metals of various kinds on BP. We find that Au, Ag, …
Current-driven spin-orbit torques are investigated in a heterostructure composed of a ferromagnet deposited on top of a three dimensional topological insulator using the linear response formalism. We develop a tight-binding model of the heterostructure adopting a minimal interfacial hybridization scheme that promotes induced magnetic exchange on the topological surface states, as well as induced Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling in the ferromagnet. Therefore, our model accounts for spin Hall effect from bulk states together with inverse spin galvanic and magnetoelectric effects at the interface …
We experimentally investigate the origin of the two-magnon scattering (TMS) in heavy-metal (HM)/ferromagnet (FM)/oxide heterostructures (FM = Co, Ni81Fe19, or Fe60Co20B20) by varying the materials located above and below the FM layers. We show that strong TMS in HM/FM/oxide systems arises primarily at the HM/FM interface and increases with the strength of interfacial spin-orbit coupling and magnetic roughness at this interface. TMS at the FM/oxide interface is relatively weak, even in systems where spin-orbit coupling at this interface generates strong interfacial magnetic anisotropy. We also …
We use a perturbative approach to study the effects of interfacial spin-orbit coupling in magnetic multilayers by treating the two-dimensional Rashba model in a fully three-dimensional description of electron transport near an interface. This formalism provides a compact analytic expression for current-induced spin-orbit torques in terms of unperturbed scattering coefficients, allowing computation of spin-orbit torques for various contexts, by simply substituting scattering coefficients into the formulas. It applies to calculations of spin-orbit torques for magnetic bilayers with bulk magnetis…
The phases and excitation spectrum of an easy-axis ferromagnetic chain of S=1/2 magnetic impurities built on the top of a clean metallic surface are studied. As a function of the (Kondo) coupling to the metallic surface and at low temperatures, the spin chain exhibits a quantum phase transition from an Ising ferromagnetic phase with long-range order to a paramagnetic phase where quantum fluctuations destroy the magnetic order. In the paramagnetic phase, the system consists of a chain of Kondo-singlets where the impurities are completely screened by the metallic host. In the ferromagnetic phase…
The asymmetry of the modal profiles for dipole-exchange spin waves propagating in in-plane magnetized ferromagnetic films at a right angle to the applied magnetic field has been investigated theoretically. It was found that in the large-magnetic moment ferromagnetic metallic films with typical thicknesses 10-60 nm the fundamental mode of the spectrum is localized at the surface opposite to the surface of localization of the exchange-free Damon-Eshbach surface wave. This anomalous localization of the wave does not affect the non-reciprocity of spin wave excitation by microstrip and coplanar tra…
We show that a static electric field induces the transition from a ferromagnetic metal to an antiferromagnetic insulator owing to the Bloch oscillation of conduction electrons. In the steady state, the electric current is inversely proportional to the applied electric field, implying the nonperturbative insulating nature that is different from the Wannier-Stark localization. Possible experimental realization based on recent terahertz pulse sources is discussed.
Chiral spin textures at the interface between ferromagnetic and heavy nonmagnetic metals, such as Neel-type domain walls and skyrmions, have been studied intensively because of their great potential for future nanomagnetic devices. The Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is an essential phenomenon for the formation of such chiral spin textures. In spite of recent theoretical progress aiming at understanding the microscopic origin of the DMI, an experimental investigation unravelling the physics at stake is still required. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the close correlation of the DMI…
The temperature dependence of the relaxation dynamics in the bilayer thin film heterostructure composed of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ (BFO) and superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) grown on a (001) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate is studied by a time-resolved pump-probe technique, and compared with that of pure YBCO thin film grown under the same growth conditions. The superconductivity of YBCO is found to be retained in the heterostructure. We observe a speeding up of the YBCO recombination dynamics in the superconducting state of the heterostructure, and attribute it to the presence of weak f…
A theoretical formulation of magnetoresistance effect in a metallic ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer originated from the charge-spin conversion by the anomalous Hall effect is presented. Analytical expressions of the longitudinal and transverse resistivities in both nonmagnet and ferromagnet are obtained by solving the spin diffusion equation. The magnetoresistance generated from charge-spin conversion purely caused by the anomalous Hall effect in the ferromagnet is found to be proportional to the square of the spin polarizations in the ferromagnet and has fixed sign. We also find additional …
We study the thermodynamic properties of a small superconducting metallic grain using a quantum Monte Carlo method. The grain is described by the universal Hamiltonian, containing pairing and ferromagnetic exchange correlations. In particular, we study how the thermodynamic signatures of pairing correlations are affected by the spin exchange interaction. We find the exchange interaction effects to be qualitatively different in the BCS and fluctuation-dominated regimes of pairing correlations.
We point out that, contrary to an assertion by Chen, Bergman and Burkov [Phys. Rev. B 88, 125110 (2013)], the non-quantized part of the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity can indeed be expressed as a Fermi-surface property even when Weyl points are present in the bandstructure.
We investigate the competition between pairing correlations and ferromagnetism in small metallic grains in the presence of a Zeeman field. Our analysis is based on the universal Hamiltonian, valid in the limit of large Thouless conductance. We show that the coexistence regime of superconducting and ferromagnetic correlations can be made experimentally accessible by tuning an external Zeeman field. We compare the exact solution of the model with a mean-field theory and find that the latter cannot describe pairing correlations in the intermediate regime. We also study the occurrence of spin jump…
