In this paper we show that the l^n-torsion part of the cohomological Brauer groups of certain schemes associated to symmetric powers of a projective smooth curve over a separably closed field k are isomorphic, when `l is invertible in k. The schemes considered are the Symmetric powers themselves, then the corresponding Picard schemes and also certain Quot-schemes. We also obtain similar results for Prym varieties associated to certain finite covers of such curves: we prove such results only for curves defined over the field of complex numbers.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field $k$ such that $char(k) \neq 2$. Let $X^{[d]}$ denote the punctual Hilbert scheme of zero dimensional quotients of degree $d$ and $X^{(d)}$ denote the symmetric product of $X$. For $\ell \neq 2$, we give a formula for the $\ell$-primary part of the Brauer group of $X^{[2]}$. We show that the Hilbert to Chow morphism induces an isomorphism of cohomological Brauer groups for $d=2$ and a similar result for $d \geq 3$. Let $Q(r,d)$ denote the punctual Quot-scheme parametrising zero dimensional quotients of $\mathcal{O}_X^{ \o…
Let X --> P^2 be a p-cyclic cover branched over a smooth, connected curve C of degree divisible by p, defined over a separably closed field of prime-to-p characteristic. We show that all (unramified) p-torsion Brauer classes on X that are fixed by Aut(X/P^2) arise as pullbacks of certain Brauer classes on k(P^2) that are unramified away from C and a fixed line L. We completely characterize these Brauer classes on k(P^2) and relate the kernel of the pullback map to the Picard group of X. If p = 2, we give a second construction, which works over any base field of characteristic not 2, that uses …
We study Brauer-Severi surface bundles over smooth projective varieties via root stacks, with a view towards applications to failure of stable rationality.
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective curve of genus at least two. Let $N$ be a connected component of the moduli space of semistable principal ${\rm PGL}_r({\mathbb C})$- bundles over $X$; it is a normal unirational complex projective variety. We prove that the Brauer group of a desingularization of $N$ is trivial.
For $X$ a smooth projective variety over a field $k$, we consider the problem of Galois descent for higher Brauer groups. More precisely, we extend a finiteness result of Colliot-Thélène and Skorobogatov to higher Brauer groups.
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve, defined over an algebraically closed field $k$, of genus at least three and $L$ a line bundle on $X$. Let ${\mathcal M}_X(r,L)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $r$ and determinant $L$ with $r\geq 2$. We prove that the Brauer group ${\rm Br}(\mathcal{M}_X(r,L))$ is cyclic of order ${\rm g.c.d.}(r,{\rm degree}(L))$. We also prove that ${\rm Br}(\mathcal{M}_X(r,L))$ is generated by the class of the projective bundle obtained by restricting the universal projective bundle. These results were proved earlier in \cite{BBGN…
Recently Dasheng Wei proved that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for 0-cycles of degree 1 on some fibrations over the projective line defined by bi-cyclic normic equations. In the present paper, we prove the exactness of the global-to-local sequence for Chow groups of 0-cycles of such varieties, which signifies that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is also the only obstruction to weak approximation for 0-cycles of arbitrary degree. Our main theorem also generalizes several existing results.
We compute the Brauer group of the universal moduli stack of vector bundles on (possibly marked) smooth curves of genus at least three over the complex numbers. As consequence, we obtain an explicit description of the Brauer group of the smooth locus of the associated moduli space of semistable vector bundles, when the genus is at least four.
For a smooth and projective variety over a number field with torsion free geometric Picard group and finite transcendental Brauer group we show that only the archimedean places, the primes of bad reduction and the primes dividing the order of the transcendental Brauer group can turn up in the description of the Brauer-Manin set.
We study local-global principles for zero-cycles on K3 surfaces defined over number fields. We follow an idea of Liang to use the trivial fibration over the projective line.
For a smooth and projective variety X over a field k of characteristic zero we prove the finiteness of the cokernel of the natural map from the Brauer group of X to the Galois-invariant subgroup of the Brauer group of the same variety over an algebraic closure of k. Under further conditions on k, e.g. over number fields, we give estimates for the order of this cokernel. ---- Soit X une variété projective et lisse sur un corps k de caractéristique zéro. Le groupe de Brauer de X s'envoie dans les invariants, sous le groupe de Galois absolu de k, du groupe de Brauer de la même variété considérée …
A Brauer pair is a pair (X, α) where X is a quasi-projective variety over an algebraically closed field and α is an element in the 2-torsion part of the Brauer group of the function field of X. A Brauer pair (Y, α) is a terminal pair if the Brauer discrepancy of (Y, α) is positive. We show that given a Brauer pair (X, α), there is a terminal pair (Y, α) with a birational morphism Y -> X. In short, any Brauer pair admits a terminal resolution.
We prove that the moduli spaces of framed bundles over a smooth projective curve are rational. We compute the Brauer group of these moduli spaces to be zero under some assumption on the stability parameter.
Unlike the classical Brauer group of a field, the Brauer-Grothendieck group of a singular scheme need not be torsion. We show that there exist integral normal projective surfaces over a large field of positive characteristic with non-torsion Brauer group. In contrast, we demonstrate that such examples cannot exist over the algebraic closure of a finite field.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve over the complex numbers. We compute the Brauer group of the moduli stack of Bruhat-Tits group scheme $\mathcal{G}$-torsors on $X$. When $g(X) \geq 3$ we compute the Brauer group of the regularly stable locus of the coarse moduli space of semi-stable $\mathcal{G}$-torsors.
We prove duality theorems for the {é}tale cohomology of logarithmic Hodge-Witt sheaves and split tori on smooth curves over a local field of positive characteristic. As an application, we obtain a description of the Brauer group of the function fields of curves over local fields in terms of the characters of the idele groups. We also show that the classical Brauer-Manin pairing between the Brauer and Picard groups of smooth projective curves over local fields has analogues for arbitrary smooth curves, smooth projective curves with modulus and singular projective curves over such fields.
We construct a smooth and projective surface over an arbitrary number field that is a counterexample to the Hasse principle but has the infinite etale Brauer-Manin set. We also construct a surface with a unique rational point and the infinite etale Brauer-Manin set. The key new ingredient is the arithmetic of singular projective curves.
Let $G$ be a semisimple linear algebraic group over the field $\mathbb C$, and let $C$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective curve of genus at least three. We compute the Brauer group of the smooth locus of the moduli space of semistable principal $G$--bundles over $C$. We also compute the Brauer group of the moduli stack of principal $G$--bundles over $C$.
Added lemma provided by Michel Brion. Other (minor) changes. Submitted version. Let k be any field, let X' be a projective and geometrically integral k-scheme and let Y' be a finite closed subscheme of X'. If f: Y'-> Y is a schematically dominant morphism between finite k-schemes and X is obtained by pinching X' along Y' via f, we describe the kernel (and, in certain cases, the cokernel) of the induced pullback map Br_{1}X -> Br_{1}X' between the corresponding algebraic (cohomological) Brauer groups of X and X'_solely_ in terms of the Brauer groups of the residue fields of Y and Y' and the Ami…
For a quasi-projective smooth geometrically integral variety over a number field $k$, we prove that the iterated descent obstruction is equivalent to the descent obstruction. This generalizes a result of Skorobogatov, and this answers an open question of Poonen. The key idea is the notion of invariant Brauer subgroup and the notion of invariant étale Brauer-Manin obstruction for a $k$-variety equipped with an action of a connected linear algebraic group.
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective curve. Let ${\mathcal Q}(r,d)$ be the Quot scheme parametrizing all coherent subsheaves of ${\mathcal O}^{\oplus r}_X$ of rank $r$ and degree $-d$. There are natural morphisms ${\mathcal Q}(r,d) \longrightarrow \text{Sym}^d(X)$ and $\text{Sym}^d(X) \longrightarrow \text{Pic}^d(X)$. We prove that both these morphisms induce isomorphism of Brauer groups if $d \geq 2$. Consequently, the Brauer group of ${\mathcal Q}(r,d)$ is identified with the Brauer group of $\text{Pic}^d(X)$ if $d \geq 2$.
We show that the torsion in the group of indecomposable $(2,1)$-cycles on a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field is isomorphic to a twist of its Brauer group, away from the characteristic. In particular, this group is infinite as soon as $b_2-ρ>0$. We derive a new insight into Roitman's theorem on torsion $0$-cycles over a surface.
Let k be a field, G a smooth connected linear algebraic group and X a homogeneous space of G over k, such that the geometric stabilizers are extensions of a smooth group of multiplicative type by a smooth connected characterfree group. If k has characteristic zero and if X^c is a smooth compactification of X over k, we obtain a formula for the algebraic Brauer group of X^c. Several variants are obtained in positive characteristic p, including the finite field case and the global field case, where the formulae describe the prime-to-p part of the algebraic unramified Brauer group of X, without a…
Let C be an irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least two, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a fixed line bundle L on C, let M_C(r,L) be the coarse moduli space of semistable vector bundles E over C of rank r and determinant L. We show that the Brauer group of any desingularization of M_C(r, L)$ is trivial.
We consider those projective bundles (or Brauer-Severi varieties) over an abelian variety that are homogeneous, i.e., invariant under translation. We describe the structure of these bundles in terms of projective representations of commutative algebraic groups; the irreducible bundles correspond to Heisenberg groups and their standard representations. Our results extend those of Mukai on semi-homogeneous vector bundles, and yield a geometric view of the Brauer group of abelian varieties.
Let ${\mathcal P}{\mathcal M}^α_s$ be a moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles of rank $n \geq 2$ and fixed determinant of degree $d$ over a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g(X) \geq 2$. If $g(X) = 2$, then we assume that $n > 2$. Let $m$ denote the greatest common divisor of $d$, $n$ and the dimensions of all the successive quotients of the quasi-parabolic filtrations. We prove that the cohomological Brauer group ${\rm Br}({\mathcal P}{\mathcal M}^α_s)$ is isomorphic to the cyclic group ${\mathbb Z}/ m{\mathbb Z}$. We also show that ${\rm Br}({\mathcal P}{\mathcal M}^…
We generalize the results of Skorobogatov and Zarhin considering the commutativity of Brauer groups (and Brauer-Manin sets) with taking product of two varieties, by relaxing the condition that varieties are projective.
Let $X$ be a projective and smooth variety over a field $k$. The goal of this paper is to prove that the cokernel of the canonical map $Br(X)\to Br(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ has a finite exponent. Both groups are natural invariants arising from consideration of the Tate conjecture of divisors over $X$.
In this paper we consider the Brauer groups of algebraic stacks and GIT quotients: the only algebraic stacks we consider in this paper are quotient stacks [X/G], where X is a smooth scheme of finite type over a field k, and G is a linear algebraic group over k and acting on X, as well as various moduli stacks of principal G-bundles on a smooth projective curve X, associated to a reductive group G. We also consider the Brauer groups of the corresponding coarse moduli spaces, which most often identify with the corresponding GIT-quotients. One conclusion that we seem to draw then is that the Brau…
We reinterpret the residue map for the Brauer group of a smooth variety using a root stack construction and Weil restriction for algebraic stacks, and apply the result to find a geometric representative of for the residue of a Brauer class associated to a conic bundle, or more generally a Brauer-Severi bundle.
Let k be a field, X a smooth, projective k-variety. If X is geometrically rational, there is an injective map from the quotient of Brauer groups Br(X)/Br(k) into the first Galois cohomology group of the lattice given by the geometric Picard group. In this note, where the main attention is on smooth compactifications of homogeneous spaces of algebraic k-tori, we show how under some hypotheses the map is onto, and how one may in some special case exhibit concrete generators in Br(X). This is applied to the analysis of counterexamples to the local-global principle for norms in biquadratic extensi…
In this paper we construct a tilting sheaf for Severi-Brauer Varieties and Involution Varieties. This sheaf relates the derived category of each variety to the derived category of modules over a ring whose semisimple component consists of the Tits algebras of the corresponding linear algebraic group.
Extending a result of Schröer on a Grothendieck question in the context of complex analytic spaces, we prove that the surjectivity of the Brauer map $δ: Br(X) \rightarrow H_{\rm ét}^2(X,\mathbb{G}_{m, X})_{\rm tor}$ for algebraic schemes depends on their étale homotopy type. We use properties of algebraic $K(π, 1)$ spaces to apply this to some classes of proper and smooth algebraic schemes. In particular we recover a result of Hoobler and Berkovich for abelian varieties. Further, we give an additional condition for the surjectivity of $δ$ which involves pro-universal covers. All proposed condi…
We compute the Brauer group of the moduli stack of stable PGL(r)-bundles on a curve $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We also show that the Brauer group of such a moduli stack coincides with the Brauer group of the smooth locus of the corresponding coarse moduli space of stable PGL(r)-bundles on $X$.
In this paper we show that the derived category of Brauer-Severi curves satisfies the Jordan-Hölder property and cannot have quasi-phantoms, phantoms or universal phantoms. In this way we obtain that quasi-phantoms, phantoms or universal phantoms cannot exist in the derived category of smooth projective curves over a field $k$. Moreover, we show that a $n$-dimensional Brauer-Severi variety is completely characterized by the existence of a full weak exceptional collection consisting of pure vector bundles of length $n+1$, at least in characteristic zero. We conjecture that Brauer-Severi varieti…
We prove that a smooth proper universally CH_0-trivial variety X over a field k has universally trivial Brauer group. This fills a gap in the literature concerning the p-torsion of the Brauer group when k has characteristic p.
Let $\text{M}_C( 2, \mathcal{O}_C) \cong \mathbb{P}^3$ denote the coarse moduli space of semistable vector bundles of rank $2$ with trivial determinant over a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $2$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $β_C$ denote the natural Brauer class over the stable locus. We prove that if $f^*( β_{C'}) = β_C$ for some birational map $f$ from $\text{M}_C( 2, \mathcal{O}_C)$ to $\text{M}_{C'}( 2, \mathcal{O}_{C'})$, then the Jacobians of $C$ and of $C'$ are isomorphic as abelian varieties. If moreover these Jacobians do not admit real multiplication, then the curves $C$ and $C'$ are i…

In this paper, for a smooth variety equiped with an action of a connected algebraic group (not necessary linear), we introduce the notion of invariant Brauer sub-group and the notion of invariant étale Brauer-Manin obstruction. Then we prove that this obstruction is equivalent to the étale Brauer-Manin obstruction. This extends the main notion and the key result of [C17]. As a corollary, this also extends a result of B. Creutz.
