Noncommutativity lies in the heart of quantum theory and provides rich set of interesting questions in physics and mathematics. In this work I present some of them through the concept of Joint Numerical Range (JNR) - the set of simultaneously attainable averages of quantum observables, which in general need not commute. Full description of JNR geometry quickly becomes complex as the dimensionality of quantum system grows. In this thesis I present already existing results in the theory of JNR, generalizations of the formalism and applications of JNR in the theory of phase transitions and uncertainty relations.
Historically, the element of uncertainty in quantum mechanics has been expressed through mathematical identities called uncertainty relations, a great many of which continue to be discovered. These relations use diverse measures to quantify uncertainty (and joint uncertainty). In this paper we use operational information-theoretic principles to identify the common essence of all such measures, thereby defining measure-independent notions of uncertainty and joint uncertainty. We find that most existing entropic uncertainty relations use measures of joint uncertainty that yield themselves to a s…
Two quantities quantifying uncertainty relations are examined. In J.Math.Phys. 48, 082103 (2007), Busch and Pearson investigated the limitation on joint localizability and joint measurement of position and momentum by introducing overall width and error bar width. In this paper, we show a simple relationship between these quantities for finite-dimensional systems. Our result indicates that if there is a bound on joint localizability, it is possible to obtain a similar bound on joint measurability. For finite-dimensional systems, uncertainty relations for a pair of general projection-valued mea…
Universally valid uncertainty relations are proven in a model independent formulation for inherent and unavoidable extra noises in arbitrary joint measurements on single systems, from which Heisenber's original uncertainty relation is proven valid for any joint measurements with statistically independent noises.
We show that different entropic measures of fluctuations lead to contradictory uncertainty relations for two complementary observables. We apply Tsallis and Rényi entropies to the joint distribution emerging from a noisy simultaneous measurement of both observables as well as to the product of their individual statistics, either intrinsic or of operational origin.
Quantum physics constrains the accuracy of joint measurements of incompatible observables. Here we test tight measurement-uncertainty relations using single photons. We implement two independent, idealized uncertainty-estimation methods, the 3-state method and the weak-measurement method, and adapt them to realistic experimental conditions. Exceptional quantum state fidelities of up to 0.99998(6) allow us to verge upon the fundamental limits of measurement uncertainty.
Joint, or simultaneous, measurements of non-commuting observables are possible within quantum mechanics, if one accepts an increase in the variances of the jointly measured observables. In this paper, we discuss joint measurements of a spin 1/2 particle along any two directions. Starting from an operational locality principle, it is shown how to obtain a bound on how sharp the joint measurement can be. We give a direct interpretation of this bound in terms of an uncertainty relation.
We present a joint-measurement uncertainty relation for a pair of mean square deviations of canonical variables averaged over Gaussian distributed quantum optical states. Our Bayesian formulation is free from the unbiasedness assumption, and enables us to quantify experimentally implemented joint-measurement devices by feeding a moderate set of coherent states. Our result also reproduces the most informative bound for quantum estimation of phase-space displacement in the case of pure Gaussian states.
The fundamental principles of complementarity and uncertainty are shown to be related to the possibility of joint unsharp measurements of pairs of noncommuting quantum observables. A new joint measurement scheme for complementary observables is proposed. The measured observables are represented as positive operator valued measures (POVMs), whose intrinsic fuzziness parameters are found to satisfy an intriguing pay-off relation reflecting the complementarity. At the same time, this relation represents an instance of a Heisenberg uncertainty relation for measurement imprecisions. A model-indepen…
We compute Rényi entropies for the statistics of a noisy simultaneous observation of two complementary observables in two-dimensional quantum systems. The relative amount of uncertainty between two states depends on the uncertainty measure used. These results are not reproduced by a more standard duality relation. We show that these behaviors are consistent with the lack of majorization relation between the corresponding statistics.
We prove an uncertainty relation, which imposes a bound on any joint measurement of position and momentum. It is of the form $(ΔP)(ΔQ)\geq C\hbar$, where the `uncertainties' quantify the difference between the marginals of the joint measurement and the corresponding ideal observable. Applied to an approximate position measurement followed by a momentum measurement, the uncertainties become the precision $ΔQ$ of the position measurement, and the perturbation $ΔP$ of the conjugate variable introduced by such a measurement. We also determine the best constant $C$, which is attained for a unique p…
Often, one would like to determine some observable A, but can only measure some (hopefully related) observable M. This can arise, for example, in quantum eavesdropping, or when the research lab budget isn't large enough for that 100% efficient photodetector. It also arises whenever one tries to jointly determine two complementary observables via some measurement M. This raises three natural questions: (i) What is the best possible estimate of A from M ? ; (ii) How 'noisy' is such an estimate ? ; and (iii) Are there any universally valid uncertainty relations for joint estimates ? Quite general…
The principle of complementarity is quantified in two ways: by a universal uncertainty relation valid for arbitrary joint estimates of any two observables from a given measurement setup, and by a general uncertainty relation valid for the_optimal_ estimates of the same two observables when the state of the system prior to measurement is known. A formula is given for the optimal estimate of any given observable, based on arbitrary measurement data and prior information about the state of the system, which generalises and provides a more robust interpretation of previous formulas for ``local exp…
We formulate and prove a new, universally valid uncertainty relation for the necessary errors bar widths in any approximate joint measurement of position and momentum.
We show within a very simple framework that different measures of fluctuations lead to uncertainty relations resulting in contradictory conclusions. More specifically we focus on Tsallis and Renyi entropic uncertainty relations and we get that the minimum uncertainty states of some uncertainty relations are the maximum uncertainty states of closely related uncertainty relations, and vice versa.
A generalized Cauchy-Schwarz inequality is derived and applied to uncertainty relation in quantum mechanics. We see a modification in the uncertainty relation and minimum uncertainty wave packet.
Dunkel and Trigger [Phys. Rev. A {71}, 052102 (2005)] show that the Leipnik's joint entropy monotonously increases for the initially maximally classical Gaussian wave packet for a free particle. After expressing the joint entropy of the general Gaussian wave packets for quadratic Hamiltonians as $S (t) = ln (e/2) + ln (2 Delta x (t) Delta p (t)/hbar)$, we show that a class of general Gaussian wave packets does not warrant the monotonous increase of the joint entropy. We propose that the random-phase entropy with respect to the squeeze angle always monotonously increases even for non-maximally …

The notion of incompatibility of measurements in quantum theory is in stark contrast with the corresponding classical perspective, where all physical observables are jointly measurable. It is of interest to examine if the results of two or more measurements in the quantum scenario can be perceived from a classical point of view or they still exhibit non-classical features. Clearly, commuting observables can be measured jointly using projective measurements and their statistical outcomes can be discerned classically. However, such simple minded association of compatibility of measurements with …
We present a new uncertainty relation by defining a measure of uncertainty based on skew information. For bipartite systems, we establish uncertainty relations with the existence of a quantum memory. A general relation between quantum correlations and tight bounds of uncertainty has been presented.
Uncertainty relations are fundamental in quantum mechanics. Here I propose state-independent variance-based uncertainty relations for two or more arbitrary observables in finite dimensional spaces. The uncertainty relations provide near-optimal lower bounds in some typical examples, and are useful for entanglement detection.
The Robertson's formulation of the uncertainty relation is the most widely accepted form of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation (HUR). It gets modified when we consider it for entangled particles. But this formulation does not consider the measurement process itself. There are reformulation of the uncertainty relations called the generalized uncertainty relations by including the measurement process into the uncertainty relation. HUR gets modified for the case of entangled particles. Here it is shown that the limit of the Generalized Uncertainty Relation (GUR) also reduces for entangled partic…
We investigate the product form uncertainty relations of variances for $n\,(n\geq 3)$ quantum observables. In particular, tight uncertainty relations satisfied by three observables has been derived, which is shown to be better than the ones derived from the strengthened Heisenberg and the generalized Schrödinger uncertainty relations, and some existing uncertainty relation for three spin-half operators. Uncertainty relation of arbitrary number of observables is also derived. As an example, the uncertainty relation satisfied by the eight Gell-Mann matrices is presented.
The time-energy uncertainty relation is discussed for a relativistic massless particle. The Lorentz-invariant uncertainty relation is obtained between the root-mean-square energy deviation and the scatter of registration time. The interconnection between this uncertainty relation and its classical analogue is established.
We shall give a new Schrödinger type uncertainty relation for a quantity representing a quantum uncertainty, introduced by S.Luo in \cite{Luo1}. Our result improves the Heisenberg uncertainty relation shown in \cite{Luo1} for a mixed state.
Uncertainty relations describe the lower bound of product of standard deviations of observables. By revealing a connection between standard deviations of quantum observables and numerical radius of operators, we establish a universal uncertainty relation for any $k$ observables, of which the formulation depends on the even or odd quality of $k$. This universal uncertainty relation is tight at least for the cases $k=2n$ and $k=3$. For two observables, the uncertainty relation is exactly a simpler reformulation of Schrödinger's uncertainty principle.
Entropic uncertainty relations express the quantum mechanical uncertainty principle by quantifying uncertainty in terms of entropy. Central questions include the derivation of lower bounds on the total uncertainty for given observables, the characterization of observables that allow strong uncertainty relations, and the construction of such relations for the case of several observables. We demonstrate how the stabilizer formalism can be applied to these questions. We show that the Maassen-Uffink entropic uncertainty relation is tight for the measurement in any pair of stabilizer bases. We comp…
In presence of quantum memory [M. Berta, M. Christandl, R. Colbeck, J.M. Renes, and R. Renner, Nature Phys. 6, 659 (2010)] the lower bound of entropic uncertainty relation depends on amount of entanglement between the particle (on which two incompatible observable are measured) and the quantum memory. On other hand, fine grained uncertainty relation [J. Oppenheim and S. Wehner, Science 330, 1072 (2010)] gives the upper bound of winning non-local (CHSH) game. We construct similar kind of quantum game and relate two uncertainty relation for measurement of any two observable on the quantum system…
Uncertainty principle is one of the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. In this work, we derive two uncertainty equalities, which hold for all pairs of incompatible observables. We also obtain an uncertainty relation in weak measurement which captures the limitation on the preparation of pre- and post-selected ensemble and hold for two non-Hermitian operators corresponding to two non-commuting observables.
Uncertainty relation is one of the fundamental building blocks of quantum theory. Nevertheless, the traditional uncertainty relations do not fully capture the concept of incompatible observables. Here we present a stronger Schrödinger-like uncertainty relation, which is stronger than the relation recently derived by L. Maccone and A. K. Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113 (2014) 260401]. Furthermore, we give an additive uncertainty relation which holds for three incompatible observables, which is stronger than the relation newly obtained by S. Kechrimparis and S. Weigert [Phys. Rev. A 90 (2014) 062118]…
Entropic uncertainty relations play an important role in both fundamentals and applications of quantum theory. Although they have been well-investigated in quantum theory, little is known about entropic uncertainty in generalized probabilistic theories (GPTs). The current study explores two types of entropic uncertainty relations, preparation and measurement uncertainty relations, in a class of GPTs which can be considered generalizations of quantum theory. Not only a method for obtaining entropic preparation uncertainty relations but also an entropic measurement uncertainty relation similar t…
Uncertainty relations are a distinctive characteristic of quantum theory that impose intrinsic limitations on the precision with which physical properties can be simultaneously determined. The modern work on uncertainty relations employs \emph{entropic measures} to quantify the lack of knowledge associated with measuring non-commuting observables. However, there is no fundamental reason for using entropies as quantifiers; any functional relation that characterizes the uncertainty of the measurement outcomes defines an uncertainty relation. Starting from a very reasonable assumption of invarian…
We discuss some applications of various versions of uncertainty relations for both discrete and continuous variables in the context of quantum information theory. The Heisenberg uncertainty relation enables demonstration of the EPR paradox. Entropic uncertainty relations are used to reveal quantum steering for non-Gaussian continuous variable states. Entropic uncertainty relations for discrete variables are studied in the context of quantum memory where fine-graining yields the optimum lower bound of uncertainty. The fine-grained uncertainty relation is used to obtain connections between uncer…
Uncertainty relation lies at the heart of quantum mechanics, characterizing the incompatibility of non-commuting observables in the preparation of quantum states. An important question is how to improve the lower bound of uncertainty relation. Here we present a variance-based sum uncertainty relation for $N$ incompatible observables stronger than the simple generalization of the uncertainty relation for two observables derived by Maccone and Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf113}, 260401 (2014)]. Further comparisons of our uncertainty relation with other related ones for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-$…
Uncertainty relations play a significant role in drawing a line between classical physics and quantum physics. Since the introduction by Heisenberg, these relations have been considerably explored. However, the effect of quantum entanglement on uncertainty relations was not probed. Berta et al. [Nature Physics 6, 659-662 (2010)] removed this gap by deriving a conditional-entropic uncertainty relation in the presence of quantum entanglement. In the same spirit, using inferred-variance, we formulate uncertainty relations in the presence of entanglement for general two-qubit systems and arbitrary…
Commutator-based entropic uncertainty relations in multidimensional position and momentum spaces are derived, twofold generalizing previous entropic uncertainty relations for one-mode states. They provide optimal lower bounds and imply the multidimensional variance-based uncertainty principle. The article concludes with an open conjecture.
This work completes the program started in \cite{bb1,bb2,bb3} to derive the Heisenberg uncertainty relation for relativistic particles. Sharp uncertainty relations for massive relativistic particles with spin 0 and spin 1 are derived. The main conclusion is that the uncertainty relations for relativistic bosons are markedly different from those for relativistic fermions. The uncertainty relations for bosons are based on the energy density. It is shown that the uncertainty relations based on the time-component of the four-current, as was have done in \cite{bb3} for electrons, are untenable beca…
We discuss the relationship between entropic uncertainty relations and entanglement. We present two methods for deriving separability criteria in terms of entropic uncertainty relations. Especially we show how any entropic uncertainty relation on one part of the system results in a separability condition on the composite system. We investigate the resulting criteria using the Tsallis entropy for two and three qubits.
We have obtained the uncertainty relations for arbitrary states of the hydrogen atom. It is shown that the minimal value of the uncertainty relation is attained for the circular Rydberg states.
We study the sum uncertainty relations based on variance and skew information for arbitrary finite N quantum mechanical observables. We derive new uncertainty inequalities which improve the exiting results about the related uncertainty relations. Detailed examples are provided to illustrate the advantages of our uncertainty inequalities.
The uncertainty relation lies at the heart of quantum theory and behaves as a non-classical constraint on the indeterminacies of incompatible observables in a system. In the literature, many experiments have been devoted to the test of the uncertainty relations which mainly focus on the pure states. In this work we test the novel majorization uncertainty relations of three incompatible observables using a series of mixed states with adjustable mixing degrees, and compare the compactness of various entropy uncertainty relations. The experimental results confirm that for general mixed quantum sy…
The canonical Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation provides a loose bound for the product of variances of two non-commuting observables. Recently, several tight forward and reverse uncertainty relations have been proved which go beyond the traditional uncertainty relations. Here we experimentally test multifold of state-dependent uncertainty relations for the product as well as the sum of variances of two incompatible observables for photonic qutrits. These uncertainty relations are independent of any optimization and still tighter than the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation and …
It brings into attention briefly the genuine significance of uncertainty relations and of their extrapolations for which conventional(usual) doctrine promotes unjustified ideas.
Uncertainty relations are among the unique fingerprints of quantum physics, being direct expression of non-commutativity and complementarity. Entropic uncertainty relations arise in quantum information theory as the most natural expression of the uncertainty principle and have proven themselves important tools for cryptographic security proofs. An open question has been how strong entropic uncertainty relations can be. Here we answer this question by showing that there exist observables that obey maximally strong entropic uncertainty relations in high dimensional Hilbert spaces. Actually, we s…
The uncertainty relation is a distinguishing feature of quantum theory, characterizing the incompatibility of noncommuting observables in the preparation of quantum states. Recently, many uncertainty relations were proposed with improved lower bounds and were deemed capable of incorporating multiple observables. Here we report an experimental verification of seven uncertainty relations of this type with single-photon measurements. The results, while confirming these uncertainty relations, show as well the relative stringency of various uncertainty lower bounds.
We study the uncertainty relation in the product form of variances and obtain some new uncertainty relations with weight, which are shown to be tighter than those derived from the Cauchy Schwarz inequality.
For angular observables pairs (angular momentum-angle and number-phase) the adequate reference element of normality is not the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation but a Schwarz formula regarding the quantum fluctuations. Beyond such a fact the traditional interpretation of the uncertainty relations appears as an unjustified doctrine.
Uncertainty relations take a crucial and fundamental part in the frame of quantum theory, and are bringing on many marvelous applications in the emerging field of quantum information sciences. Especially, as entropy is imposed into the uncertainty principle, entropy-based uncertainty relations lead to a number of applications including quantum key distribution, entanglement witness, quantum steering, quantum metrology, and quantum teleportation. Herein, the history of the development of the uncertainty relations is discussed, especially focusing on the recent progress with regard to quantum-me…
We study sum uncertainty relations for arbitrary finite $N$ quantum mechanical observables. Some uncertainty inequalities are presented by using skew information introduced by Wigner and Yanase. These uncertainty inequalities are nontrivial as long as the observables are mutually noncommutative. The relations among these new and existing uncertainty inequalities have been investigated. Detailed examples are presented.
Uncertainty principle plays a vital role in quantum physics. The Wigner-Yanase skew information characterizes the uncertainty of an observable with respect to the measured state. We generalize the uncertainty relations for two quantum channels to arbitrary N quantum channels based on Wigner-Yanase skew information. We illustrate that these uncertainty inequalities are tighter than the existing ones by detailed examples. Especially, we also discuss the uncertainty relations for N unitary channels, which could be regarded as variance-based sum uncertainty relations with respect to any pure state…
Uncertainty relations play a central role in quantum mechanics. Entropic uncertainty relations in particular have gained significant importance within quantum information, providing the foundation for the security of many quantum cryptographic protocols. Yet, rather little is known about entropic uncertainty relations with more than two measurement settings. In this note we review known results and open questions.
Taking advantage of coherent light beams, we experimentally investigate the variancebased uncertainty relations and the optimal majorization uncertainty relation for the two-dimensional quantum mechanical system.Different from most of the experiments which devoted to record each individual quantum, we examine the uncertainty relations by measuring an ensemble of photons with two polarization degree of freedom characterized by the Stokes parameters which allow us to determine the polarization density matrix with high precision. The optimality of the recently proposed direct-sum majorization unc…
The canonical quantization of flux is performed. It is shown that according to the canonical flux quantization there must be a new uncertainty relation: $e ΔA_m . Δx_m \geq \hbar$ where $A_m$ and $Δx_m \geq l_B$ are the electromagnetic gauge potential, the position uncertainty and the magnetic length, respectively. Other arguments in favour of this uncertainty relation are also discussed.
We derive two quantum uncertainty relations for position and momentum coarse-grained measurements. Building on previous results, we first improve the lower bound for uncertainty relations using the Renyi entropy, particularly in the case of coarse-grained measurements. We then sharpen a Heisenberg-like uncertainty relation derived previously in [Europhys. Lett. 97, 38003, (2012)] that uses variances and reduces to the usual one in the case of infinite precision measurements. Our sharpened uncertainty relation is meaningful for any amount of coarse graining. That is, there is always a non-trivi…
We investigate the uncertainty principle for two successive projective measurements in terms of Rényi entropy based on a single quantum system. Our results cover a large family of the entropy (including the Shannon entropy) uncertainty relations with a lower optimal bound. We compare our relation with other formulations of the uncertainty principle in a two-spin observables measured on a pure quantum state of qubit. It is shown that the low bound of our uncertainty relation has better tightness.
