Uncertainty relations are fundamental in quantum mechanics. Here I propose state-independent variance-based uncertainty relations for two or more arbitrary observables in finite dimensional spaces. The uncertainty relations provide near-optimal lower bounds in some typical examples, and are useful for entanglement detection.
We study the sum uncertainty relations based on variance and skew information for arbitrary finite N quantum mechanical observables. We derive new uncertainty inequalities which improve the exiting results about the related uncertainty relations. Detailed examples are provided to illustrate the advantages of our uncertainty inequalities.
Based on mixedness definition as M=1-tr(\r{ho}^2), we obtain a new variance-based uncertainty equality along with an inequality for Hermitian operators of a single-qubit system. The obtained uncertainty equality can be used as a measure of the system mixedness. A qubit system with feedback control is also exploited to demonstrate the new uncertainty.
We formulate uncertainty relations for arbitrary finite number of incompatible observables. Based on the sum of variances of the observables, both Heisenberg-type and Schrödinger-type uncertainty relations are provided. These new lower bounds are stronger in most of the cases than the ones derived from some existing inequalities. Detailed examples are presented.
We investigate the product form uncertainty relations of variances for $n\,(n\geq 3)$ quantum observables. In particular, tight uncertainty relations satisfied by three observables has been derived, which is shown to be better than the ones derived from the strengthened Heisenberg and the generalized Schrödinger uncertainty relations, and some existing uncertainty relation for three spin-half operators. Uncertainty relation of arbitrary number of observables is also derived. As an example, the uncertainty relation satisfied by the eight Gell-Mann matrices is presented.
Uncertainty relations play a significant role in drawing a line between classical physics and quantum physics. Since the introduction by Heisenberg, these relations have been considerably explored. However, the effect of quantum entanglement on uncertainty relations was not probed. Berta et al. [Nature Physics 6, 659-662 (2010)] removed this gap by deriving a conditional-entropic uncertainty relation in the presence of quantum entanglement. In the same spirit, using inferred-variance, we formulate uncertainty relations in the presence of entanglement for general two-qubit systems and arbitrary…
New sum and product uncertainty relations, containing variances of three or four observables, but not containing explicitly their covariances, are derived. One of consequences is the new inequality, giving a nonzero lower bound for the product of two variances in the case of zero mean value of the commutator between the related operators. Moreover, explicit examples show that in some cases this new bound can be better than the known Robertson--Schrödinger one.
Heisenberg-Robertson's uncertainty relation expresses a limitation in the possible preparations of the system by giving a lower bound to the product of the variances of two observables in terms of their commutator. Notably, it does not capture the concept of incompatible observables because it can be trivial, i.e., the lower bound can be null even for two non-compatible observables. Here we give two stronger uncertainty relations, relating to the sum of variances, whose lower bound is guaranteed to be nontrivial whenever the two observables are incompatible on the state of the system.
Learning physical properties of a quantum system is essential for the developments of quantum technologies. However, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle constrains the potential knowledge one can simultaneously have about a system in quantum theory. Aside from its fundamental significance, the mathematical characterization of this restriction, known as `uncertainty relation', plays important roles in a wide range of applications, stimulating the formation of tighter uncertainty relations. In this work, we investigate the fundamental limitations of variance-based uncertainty relations, and intro…
In quantum mechanics, the variance-based Heisenberg-type uncertainty relations are a series of mathematical inequalities posing the fundamental limits on the achievable accuracy of the state preparations. In contrast, we construct and formulate two quantum uncertainty equalities, which hold for all pairs of incompatible observables and indicate the new uncertainty relations recently introduced by L. Maccone and A. K. Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 260401 (2014)]. Furthermore, we present an explicit interpretation lying behind the derivations and relate these relations to the so-called intelligent…
Uncertainty relation is a fundamental issue in quantum mechanics and quantum information theory. By using modified generalized variance (MGV), and modified generalized Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information (MGWYD), we identify the total and quantum uncertainty of quantum channels. The elegant properties of the total uncertainty of quantum channels are explored in detail. In addition, we present a trade-off relation between the total uncertainty of quantum channels and the entanglement fidelity and establish the relationships between the total uncertainty and entropy exchange/coherent informatio…
Variance is a ubiquitous quantity in quantum information theory. Given a basis, we consider the averaged variances of a fixed diagonal observable in a pure state under all possible permutations on the components of the pure state and call it the symmetrized variance. Moreover we work out the analytical expression of the symmetrized variance and find that such expression is in the factorized form where two factors separately depends on the diagonal observable and quantum state. By shifting the factor corresponding to the diagonal observable, we introduce the notion named the standard symmetrize…
The effect of the quantum feedback on the tightness of the variance-based uncertainty, the possibility of using quantum feedback to prepare the state with a better tightness, and the relationship between the tightness of the uncertainty and the mixedness of the system are studied. It is found that the tightness of Schrodinger-Robertson uncertainty (SUR) relation has a strict liner relationship with the mixedness of the system. As for the Robertson uncertainty relation (RUR), we find that the tightness can be enhanced by tuning the feedback at the beginning of the evolution. In addition, we ded…
We present an equivalence theorem to unify the two classes of uncertainty relations, i.e., the variance-based ones and the entropic forms, which shows that the entropy of an operator in a quantum system can be built from the variances of a set of commutative operators. That means an uncertainty relation in the language of entropy may be mapped onto a variance-based one, and vice versa. Employing the equivalence theorem, alternative formulations of entropic uncertainty relations stronger than existing ones in the literature are obtained for qubit system, and variance based uncertainty relations…
The variance of an observable in a quantum state is usually used to describe Heisenberg uncertainty relation. For mixed states, the variance includes quantum uncertainty and classical uncertainty. By means of the skew information and the decomposition of the variance, a stronger uncertainty relation was presented by Luo in [Phys. Rev. A 72, 042110 (2005)]. In this paper, by using Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information which is a generalization of the skew information, we propose a general uncertainty relation of mixed states.
Constructive techniques to establish state-independent uncertainty relations for the sum of variances of arbitrary two observables are presented. We investigate the range of simultaneously attainable pairs of variances, which can be applied to a wide variety of problems including finding exact bound for the sum of variances of two components of angular momentum operator for any total angular momentum quantum number $j$ and detection of quantum entanglement. Resulting uncertainty relations are state-independent, semianalytical, bounded-error and can be made arbitrarily tight. The advocated appr…
We prove a few novel state-dependent uncertainty relations for product as well the sum of variances of two incompatible observables. These uncertainty relations are shown to be tighter than the Roberson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation and other ones existing in the current literature. Also, we derive state dependent upper bound to the sum and the product of variances using the reverse Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and the Dunkl-Williams inequality. Our results suggest that not only we cannot prepare quantum states for which two incompatible observables can have sharp values, but also we have both…
The canonical Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation provides a loose bound for the product of variances of two non-commuting observables. Recently, several tight forward and reverse uncertainty relations have been proved which go beyond the traditional uncertainty relations. Here we experimentally test multifold of state-dependent uncertainty relations for the product as well as the sum of variances of two incompatible observables for photonic qutrits. These uncertainty relations are independent of any optimization and still tighter than the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation and …
Uncertainty principle is one of the cornerstones of quantum theory. In the literature, there are two types of uncertainty relations, the operator form concerning the variances of physical observables and the entropy form related to entropic quantities. Both these forms are inequalities involving pairwise observables, and are found to be nontrivial to incorporate multiple observables. In this work we introduce a new form of uncertainty relation which may give out complete trade-off relations for variances of observables in pure and mixed quantum systems. Unlike the prevailing uncertainty relati…
Position uncertainty (delocalization) measures for a particle on the sphere are proposed and illustrated on several examples of states. The new measures are constructed using suitably the standard multiplication angle operator variances. They are shown to depend solely on the state of the particle and to obey uncertainty relations of the Schroedinger--Robertson type. A set of Hermitian operators with continuous spectrum is pointed out the variances of which are complementary to the longitudinal angle uncertainty measure.
The Schr{ö}dinger inequality is known to underlie the Kennard-Robertson inequality, which is the standard expression of quantum uncertainty for the product of variances of two observables $A$ and $B$, in the sense that the latter is derived from the former. In this paper we point out that, albeit more subtle, there is yet another inequality which underlies the Schr{ö}dinger inequality in the same sense. The key component of this observation is the use of the weak-value operator $A_{\rm w}(B)$ introduced in our previous works (named after Aharonov's weak value), which was shown to act as the pr…
As a foundation of modern physics, uncertainty relations describe an ultimate limit for the measurement uncertainty of incompatible observables. Traditionally, uncertain relations are formulated by mathematical bounds for a specific state. Here we present a method for geometrically characterizing uncertainty relations as an entire area of variances of the observables, ranging over all possible input states. We find that for the pair of position $x$ and momentum $p$ operators, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle points exactly to the area of the variances of $x$ and $p$. Moreover, for finite-dim…
Recently, Maccone and Pati have given two stronger uncertainty relations based on the sum of variances and one of them is nontrivial when the quantum state is not an eigenstate of the sum of the observables. We derive a family of weighted uncertainty relations to provide an optimal lower bound for all situations and remove the restriction on the quantum state. Generalization to multi-observable cases is also given and an optimal lower bound for the weighted sum of the variances is obtained in general quantum situation.
How much unavoidable randomness is generated by a Positive Operator Valued Measure (POVM)? We address this question using two complementary approaches. First we study the variance of a real variable associated to the POVM outcomes. In this context we introduce an uncertainty operator which measures how much additional noise is introduced by carrying out a POVM rather than a von Neumann measurement. We illustrate this first approach by studying the variances of joint estimates of σ_x and σ_z for spin 1/2 particles. We show that for unbiased measurements the sum of these variances is lower bound…
Quantifying quantum mechanical uncertainty is vital for the increasing number of experiments that reach the uncertainty limited regime. We present a method for computing tight variance uncertainty relations, i.e., the optimal state-independent lower bound for the sum of the variances for any set of two or more measurements. The bounds come with a guaranteed error estimate, so results of pre-assigned accuracy can be obtained straightforwardly. Our method also works for POVM measurements. Therefore, it can be used for detecting entanglement in noisy environments, even in cases where conventional…
Uncertainty relations are one of the fundamental principles in physics. It began as a fundamental limitation in quantum mechanics, and today the word {\it uncertainty relation} is a generic term for various trade-off relations in nature. In this letter, we improve the Kennard-Robertson uncertainty relation, and clarify how much coherence we need to implement quantum measurement under conservation laws. Our approach systematically improves and reproduces the previous various refinements of the Kennard-Robertson inequality. As a direct consequence of our inequalities, we improve a well-known lim…
We study the uncertainty relation in the product form of variances and obtain some new uncertainty relations with weight, which are shown to be tighter than those derived from the Cauchy Schwarz inequality.
We construct a quantum-control-assisted multi-observable variance-based uncertainty relation, and the uncertainty relation obtained indicates that we can prepare a quantum state, in which the measurement results of any observables can be predicted precisely with the help of quantum control and entanglement resource. The new variance-based uncertainty relation provides a concept of "multiparticle entanglement resolution lines" for multiparticle entangled pure states, that can delineate different multiparticle entanglement classes, and thus it can be considered as an analyzer of multiparticle en…
Commutator-based entropic uncertainty relations in multidimensional position and momentum spaces are derived, twofold generalizing previous entropic uncertainty relations for one-mode states. They provide optimal lower bounds and imply the multidimensional variance-based uncertainty principle. The article concludes with an open conjecture.
We show how preparation uncertainty relations that are formulated as sums of variances may be tightened by using the quantum Fisher information to quantify quantum fluctuations. We apply this to derive stronger angular momentum uncertainty relations, which in the case of spin-$1/2$ turn into equalities involving the purity. Using an analogy between pure-state decompositions in the Bloch sphere and the moment of inertia of rigid bodies, we identify optimal decompositions that achieve the convex- and concave-roof decomposition of the variance. Finally, we illustrate how these results may be used…
The standard state-dependent Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainly-relation lower bound fails to capture the quintessential incompatibility of observables as the bound can be zero for some states. To remedy this problem, we establish a class of tight (i.e., inequalities are saturated)variance-based sum-uncertainty relations derived from the Lie algebraic properties of observables and show that our lower bounds depend only on the irreducible representation assumed carried by the Hilbert space of state of the system. We illustrate our result for the cases of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra, special unita…
We describe a six-parameter family of the minimum-uncertainty squeezed states for the harmonic oscillator in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. They are derived by the action of corresponding maximal kinematical invariance group on the standard ground state solution. We show that the product of the variances attains the required minimum value 1/4 only at the instances that one variance is a minimum and the other is a maximum, when the squeezing of one of the variances occurs. The generalized coherent states are explicitly constructed and their Wigner function is studied. The overlap coefficien…
We explain several separability criteria which rely on uncertainty relations. For the derivation of these criteria uncertainty relations in terms of variances or entropies can be used. We investigate the strength of the separability conditions for the case of two qubits and show how they can improve entanglement witnesses.
We introduce a new concept called as the mutual uncertainty between two observables in a given quantum state which enjoys similar features like the mutual information for two random variables. Further, we define the conditional uncertainty as well as conditional variance and show that conditioning on more observable reduces the uncertainty. Given three observables, we prove a 'strong sub-additivity' relation for the conditional uncertainty under certain condition. As an application, we show that using the conditional variance one can detect bipartite higher dimensional entangled states. The ef…
Since the uncertainty about an observable of a system prepared in a quantum state is usually described by its variance, when the state is mixed, the variance is a hybrid of quantum and classical uncertainties. Besides that, complementarity relations are saturated only for pure, single-quanton, quantum states. For mixed states, the wave-particle quantifiers never saturate the complementarity relation and can even reach zero for a maximally mixed state. So, to fully characterize a quanton it is not sufficient to consider its wave-particle aspect; one has also to regard its correlations with othe…
We give a bound to the precision in the estimation of a parameter in terms of the expectation value of an observable. It is an extension of the Cramer-Rao inequality and of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, where the estimation precision is typically bounded in terms of the variance of an observable.
The optimal state-independent lower bounds for the sum of variances or deviations of observables are of significance for the growing number of experiments that reach the uncertainty limited regime. We present a framework for computing the tight uncertainty relations of variance or deviation via determining the uncertainty regions, which are formed by the tuples of two or more of quantum observables in random quantum states induced from the uniform Haar measure on the purified states. From the analytical formulae of these uncertainty regions, we present state-independent uncertainty inequalitie…
The variance and uncertainty product of the position and momentum many-particle operators of structureless bosons interacting by a long-range inter-particle interaction and trapped in a single-well potential are investigated. In the first example, of an out-of-equilibrium interaction-quench scenario, it is found that, despite the system being fully condensed, already when a fraction of a particle is depleted differences with respect to the mean-field quantities emerge. In the second example, of the pathway from condensation to fragmentation of the ground state, we find out that, although the c…
The uncertainty principle is one of the fundamental features of quantum mechanics and plays an essential role in quantum information theory. We study uncertainty relations based on variance for arbitrary finite $N$ quantum observables. We establish a series of parameterized uncertainty relations in terms of the parameterized norm inequalities, which improve the exiting variance-based uncertainty relations. The lower bounds of our uncertainty inequalities are non-zero unless the measured state is a common eigenvector of all the observables. Detailed examples are provided to illustrate the tight…
In terms of operator, the two complementary quantities, the predictability and visibility, are reinvestigated in a two-way interferometer. One Hermitian operator and one non-Hermitian operator (composed of two Hermitian operators) are introduced for the predictability and visibility, respectively. The predictability and visibility can not be measured exactly simultaneously, due to the non-commutation between the two operators. The sum of the variances of the predictability and visibility (the total variance), is used to measure the uncertainty, which is linked to the complementarity relation t…
In this work we study various notions of uncertainty for angular momentum in the spin-s representation of SU(2). We characterize the "uncertainty regions'' given by all vectors, whose components are specified by the variances of the three angular momentum components. A basic feature of this set is a lower bound for the sum of the three variances. We give a method for obtaining optimal lower bounds for uncertainty regions for general operator triples, and evaluate these for small s. Further lower bounds are derived by generalizing the technique by which Robertson obtained his state-dependent lo…
Various theories that aim at unifying gravity with quantum mechanics suggest modifications of the Heisenberg algebra for position and momentum. From the perspective of quantum mechanics, such modifications lead to new uncertainty relations which are thought (but not proven) to imply the existence of a minimal observable length. Here we prove this statement in a framework of sufficient physical and structural assumptions. Moreover, we present a general method that allows to formulate optimal and state-independent variance-based uncertainty relations. In addition, instead of variances, we make u…
We derive strong variance-based uncertainty relations for arbitrary two and more unitary operators by re-examining the mathematical foundation of the uncertainty relation. This is achieved by strengthening the celebrated Cauchy-Schwarz inequality using a method of brackets and convex functions. The unitary uncertainty relations outperform several strong unitary uncertainty relations, notably better than some recent best lower bounds such as [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 230402 (2018)] and [Phys. Rev. A. 100, 022116 (2019)].
