We extend earlier work of Waldhausen which defines operations on the algebraic $K$-theory of the one-point space. For a connected simplicial abelian group $X$ and symmetric groups $Σ_n$, we define operations $θ^n \colon A(X) \rightarrow A(X{\times}BΣ_n)$ in the algebraic $K$-theory of spaces. We show that our operations can be given the structure of $E_{\infty}$-maps. Let $ϕ_n \colon A(X{\times}BΣ_n) \rightarrow A(X{\times}EΣ_n) \simeq A(X)$ be the $Σ_n$-transfer. We also develop an inductive procedure to compute the compositions $ϕ_n \circ θ^n$, and outline some applications.
We introduce higher dimensional analogues of simplicial constructions due to Segal and Waldhausen, respectively producing the direct sum and algebraic $K$-theory spectra of an exact category. We then investigate their fibrancy properties, based on the formalism of higher Segal spaces by Dyckerhoff-Kapranov.
For each n\geq 1 we introduce two new Segal-type models of n-types of topological spaces: weakly globular n-fold groupoids, and a lax version of these. We show that any n-type can be represented up to homotopy by such models via an explicit algebraic fundamental n-fold groupoid functor. We compare these models to Tamsamani's weak n-groupoids, and extract from them a model for (k-1)connected n-types
This paper concerns our earlier conjecture about the equivalence of a derived completion construction applied to the representation spectrum of the absolute Galois group of a geometric field is equivalent to the algebraic K-theory of the field. We prove that the p-adic version of the derived completion construction can be interpreted as the K-theory of a certain pro-scheme over an algebraically closed field contained within the field. In order to make this construction, we use a special property of absolute Galois groups of geometric field, namely that of total torsion freeness, and the paper …
Many homotopy-coherent algebraic structures can be described by Segal-type limit conditions determined by an "algebraic pattern", bywhich we mean an $\infty$-category equipped with a factorization system and a collection of "elementary" objects. Examples of structures that occur as such "Segal $\mathcal{O}$-spaces" for an algebraic pattern $\mathcal{O}$ include $\infty$-categories, $(\infty,n)$-categories, $\infty$-operads, $\infty$-properads, and algebras for an $\infty$-operad in spaces. In the first part of this paper we set up a general frameworkn for algebraic patterns and their Segal obj…
We show that the basic categorical concept of an S-algebra as derived from the theory of Segal's Gamma-sets provides a unifying description of several constructions attempting to model an algebraic geometry over the absolute point. It merges, in particular, the approaches using monoids, semirings and hyperrings as well as the development by means of monads and generalized rings in Arakelov geometry. The assembly map determines a functorial way to associate an S-algebra to a monad on pointed sets. The notion of an S-algebra is very familiar in algebraic topology where it also provides a suitabl…
The Segal conjecture describes stable maps between classifying spaces in terms of (virtual) bisets for the finite groups in question. Along these lines, we give an algebraic formula for the p-completion functor applied to stable maps between classifying spaces purely in terms of fusion data and Burnside modules.
The paper examines machines of the type of the $Γ$-spaces of Segal which describe homotopy structures on topological spaces. The main result of the paper shows that for any such machine one can find an algebraic theory characterizing the same structure on spaces as the original machine.
We propose a construction of the monoidal envelope of $\infty$-operads in the model of Segal dendroidal spaces, and use it to define cocartesian fibrations of such. We achieve this by viewing the dendroidal category as a "plus construction" of the category of pointed finite sets, and work in the more general language of algebraic patterns for Segal conditions. Finally, we rephrase Lurie's definition of cartesian structures as exhibiting the categorical fibrations coming from envelopes, and deduce a straightening/unstraightening equivalence for dendroidal spaces.
We modify a previous result, which showed that certain diagrams of spaces are essentially simplicial monoids, to construct diagrams of spaces which model simplicial groups. Furthermore, we show that these diagrams can be generalized to models for Segal groupoids. We then modify Segal's model for simplicial abelian monoids in such a way that it becomes a model for simplicial abelian groups.
Dyckerhoff--Kapranov and Gálvez-Carrillo--Kock--Tonks independently introduced the notion of a $2$-Segal space, that is, a simplicial space satisfying $2$-dimensional analogues of the Segal conditions, as a unifying framework for understanding the numerous Hall algebra-like constructions appearing in algebraic geometry, representation theory and combinatorics. In particular, they showed that every $2$-Segal object defines an algebra object in the $\infty$-category of spans. In this paper we show that this algebra structure is inherited from the initial simplicial object $Δ[\bullet]$. Namely, w…
In this paper, we establish a multiplicative equivalence between two multiplicative algebraic $K$-theory constructions, Elmendorf and Mandell's version of Segal's $K$-theory and Blumberg and Mandell's version of Waldhausen's $S_\bullet$ construction. This equivalence implies that the ring spectra, algebra spectra, and module spectra constructed via these two classical algebraic $K$-theory functors are equivalent as ring, algebra or module spectra, respectively. It also allows for comparisions of spectrally enriched categories constructed via these definitions of $K$-theory. As both the Elmendo…
In the 1980's, Ravenel introduced sequences of spectra $X(n)$ and $T(n)$ which played an important role in the proof of the Nilpotence Theorem of Devinatz--Hopkins--Smith. In the present paper, we solve the homotopy limit problem for topological Hochschild homology of $X(n)$, which is a generalized version of the Segal Conjecture for the cyclic groups of prime order. This result is the first step towards computing the algebraic K-theory of $X(n)$ using trace methods, which approximates the algebraic K-theory of the sphere spectrum in a precise sense. We solve the homotopy limit problem for top…
This is the first paper in a series on new higher categorical structures called higher Segal spaces. For every d > 0, we introduce the notion of a d-Segal space which is a simplicial space satisfying locality conditions related to triangulations of cyclic polytopes of dimension d. In the case d=1, we recover Rezk's theory of Segal spaces. The present paper focuses on 2-Segal spaces. The starting point of the theory is the observation that Hall algebras, as previously studied, are only the shadow of a much richer structure governed by a system of higher coherences captured in the datum of a 2-S…
In 1970s Segal outlined proofs of two theorems relating spaces of Fredholm and self-adjoint Fredholm operators with Quillen's constructions used to define higher algebraic K-theory. In the present paper we provide detailed proofs of these theorems of Segal (different from the ones outlined by Segal) and then transplant some further ideas of Quillen to the real of Fredholm and self-adjoint Fredholm operators. The main results may be considered as partial analogues of the equivalence of Quillen's two definition of higher algebraic K-theory. Along the way we relate spaces of Fredholm and self-adj…
This paper is a study of Bousfield-Segal spaces, a notion introduced by Julie Bergner drawing on ideas about Eilenberg-Mac Lane objects due to Bousfield. In analogy to Rezk's Segal spaces, they are defined in such a way that Bousfield-Segal spaces naturally come equipped with a homotopy-coherent fraction operation in place of a composition. In this paper we show that Bergner's model structure for Bousfield-Segal spaces in fact can be obtained from the model structure for Segal spaces both as a localization and a colocalization. We thereby prove that Bousfield-Segal spaces really are Segal spac…
We define a notion of homotopy Segal cooperad in the category of $ E_\infty $-algebras. This model of Segal cooperad that we define in the paper, which we call homotopy Segal $ E_\infty $-Hopf cooperad, covers examples given by the cochain complex of topological operads and provides a framework for the study of the homotopy of such objects. In a first step, we consider a category of Segal $ E_\infty $-Hopf cooperads, which consists of collections of $ E_\infty $-algebras indexed by trees and equipped with coproduct operators, corresponding to tree morphisms, together with facet operators, corr…
For positive integers $m,n, d\geq 1$ with $(m,n)\not= (1,1)$ and a field $\Bbb F$ with its algebraic closure $\overline{\Bbb F}$, let $\text{Poly}^{d,m}_n(\Bbb F)$ denote the space of all $m$-tuples $(f_1(z),\cdots ,f_m(z))\in \Bbb F [z]$ of monic polynomials of the same degree $d$ such that polynomials $f_1(z),\cdots ,f_m(z)$ have no common root in $\overline{\Bbb F}$ of multiplicity $\geq n$. These spaces were defined by Farb and Wolfson in \cite{FW} as generalizations of spaces first studied by Arnold, Vassiliev, Segal and others in different contexts. In \cite{FW} they obtained algebraic g…
We investigate higher topological cyclic homology as an approach to studying chromatic phenomena in homotopy theory. Higher topological cyclic homology is constructed from the fixed points of a version of topological Hochschild homology based on the n-dimensional torus, and we propose it as a computationally tractable cousin of n-fold iterated algebraic K-theory. The fixed points of toral topological Hochschild homology are related to one another by restriction and Frobenius operators. We introduce two additional families of operators on fixed points, the Verschiebung, indexed on self-isogenie…
Let T be a torus, X a smooth quasi-compact separated scheme equipped with a T-action, and [X/T] the associated quotient stack. Given any localizing A1-homotopy invariant of dg categories E, we prove that the derived completion of E([X/T]) at the augmentation ideal I of the representation ring R(T) of T agrees with the Borel construction associated to the T-action on X. Moreover, for certain localizing A1-homotopy invariants, we extend this result to the case of a linearly reductive group scheme G. As a first application, we obtain an alternative proof of Krishna's completion theorem in algebra…
We compute the homology of the space of equivariant loops on the classifying space of a simplicial monoid $M$ with anti-involution, provided $π_0 (M)$ is central in the homology ring of $M$. The proof is similar to McDuff and Segal's proof of the group completion theorem. Then we compute the homology of the $C_2$-fixed points of a Segal-type model of the algebraic $K$-theory of an additive category with duality. As an application we show that this fixed point space is sometimes group complete, but not in general.
We develop algebraic geometry for general Segal's Gamma-rings and show that this new theory unifies two approaches we had considered earlier on (for a geometry under Spec Z). The starting observation is that the category obtained by gluing together the category of commutative rings and that of pointed commutative monoids, that we used in our previous work to define F1-schemes, is naturally a full subcategory of the category of Segal's Gamma-rings. In this paper we develop the affine case of this general algebraic geometry: one distinctive feature is that the spectrum Spec(A) of a Gamma-ring is…
We suggest a new delooping machine, which is based on recognizing an n-fold loop space by a collection of operations acting on it, like the traditional delooping machines of Stasheff, May, Boardman-Vogt, Segal, and Bousfield. Unlike in the traditional delooping machines, which carefully select a nice space of such operations, we consider all natural operations on n-fold loop spaces, resulting in the algebraic theory Map (V_. S^n, V_. S^n). The advantage of this new approach is that the delooping machine is universal in a certain sense, the proof of the recognition principle is more conceptual,…
We describe bialgebras of lower-indexed algebraic Steenrod operations over the field with p elements, p an odd prime. These go beyond the operations that can act nontrivially in topology, and their duals are closely related to algebras of polynomial invariants under subgroups of the general linear groups that contain the unipotent upper triangular groups. There are significant differences between these algebras and the analogous one for p=2, in particular in the nature and consequences of the defining Adem relations.
The description of algebraic structure of n-fold loop spaces can be done either using the formalism of topological operads, or using variations of Segal's $Γ$-spaces. The formalism of topological operads generalises well to different categories yielding such notions as $\mathbb E_n$-algebras in chain complexes, while the $Γ$-space approach faces difficulties. In this paper we discuss how, by attempting to extend the Segal approach to arbitrary categoires, one arrives to the problem of understanding "weak" sections of a homotopical Grothendieck fibration. We propose a model for such sections, c…
A $p$-local compact group is an algebraic object modelled on the homotopy theory associated with $p$-completed classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups. In particular $p$-local compact groups give a unified framework in which one may study $p$-completed classifying spaces from an algebraic and homotopy theoretic point of view. Like connected compact Lie groups and p-compact groups, $p$-local compact groups admit unstable Adams operations - self equivalences that are characterised by their cohomological effect. Unstable Adams operations on $p$-local compact groups were cons…
This is the first in a series of papers devoted to the theory of decomposition spaces, a general framework for incidence algebras and Möbius inversion, where algebraic identities are realised by taking homotopy cardinality of equivalences of $\infty$-groupoids. A decomposition space is a simplicial $\infty$-groupoid satisfying an exactness condition, weaker than the Segal condition, expressed in terms of active and inert maps in Delta. Just as the Segal condition expresses composition, the new condition expresses decomposition, and there is an abundance of examples in combinatorics. After esta…
We establish certain smash operations on spaces over operads which are general analogues of the Samelson product on single loop spaces, and obtain a conceptual description of the structure of the homotopy groups of spaces $Y$ over a symmetric $K(π,1)$ operad: $π_*Y$ is a module over the free algebraic symmetric operad generated by operations on homotopy groups induced by these smash operations. In particular the homotopy groups of double loop spaces is a module over the free algebraic symmetric operad generated by the conjugacy classes of Brunnian braids modulo the conjugation action of pure b…
The primary algebraic model of a ring spectrum is the ring of homotopy groups. We introduce the secondary model which has the structure of a secondary analogue of a ring. This new algebraic model determines Massey products and cup-one squares. As an application we obtain new derivations of the homotopy ring.
We describe additive (unstable) operations from a theory A^* obtained from Algebraic Cobordism of M.Levine-F.Morel by change of coefficients to any oriented cohomology theory B^*. We prove that there is 1-to-1 correspondence between the set of operations, and the set of transformations: A^n((P^{\infty})^{\times r}) ---> B^m((P^{\infty})^{\times r}) satisfying certain simple properties. This provides an effective tool of constructing such operations. As an application, we prove that (unstable) additive operations in Algebraic Cobordism are in 1-to-1 correspondence with the L\otimes_Z Q-linear c…
The manuscript is an overview of the motivations and foundations lying behind Voevodsky's ideas of constructing categories similar to the ordinary topological homotopy categories. The objects of these categories are strictly related to algebraic varieties and preserve some of their algebraic invariants.
Steenrod operations have been defined by Voedvodsky in motivic cohomology in order to show the Milnor and Bloch-Kato conjectures. These operations have also been constructed by Brosnan for Chow rings. The purpose of this paper is to provide a setting for the construction of the Steenrod operations in algebraic geometry, for generalized cohomology theories whose formal group law has order two. We adapt the methods used by Bisson-Joyal in studying Steenrod and Dyer-Lashof operations in unoriented cobordism and mod 2 cohomology.
Algebraic cycles on complex projective space P(V) are known to have beautiful and surprising properties. Therefore, when V carries a real or quaternionic structure, it is natural to ask for the properties of the groups of real or quaternionic algebraic cycles on P(V). In this paper and its sequel the homotopy structure of these cycle groups is determined. They bear a direct relationship to characteristic classes for the classical groups, and functors in K-theory extend directly to these groups. These groups give rise to E-infinity-ring spaces, and the maps extending the K-theory functors are r…
In this article we construct Symmetric operations for all primes (previously known only for p=2). These unstable operations are more subtle than the Landweber-Novikov operations, and encode all p-primary divisibilities of characteristic numbers. Thus, taken together (for all primes) they plug the gap left by the Hurewitz map L ---> Z[b_1,b_2,...], providing an important structure on Algebraic Cobordism. Applications include: questions of rationality of Chow group elements - see [11], and the structure of the Graded Algebraic Cobordism. We also construct Steenrod operations of T.tom Dieck-style…
We first discuss how open/closed chord diagrams, both with and without marked points, act on appropriate Hochschild complexes possibly coupled with the two-sided cobar complex. Then, in the main part of the paper, we introduce the notion of a V_k-algebra and obtain suitable homotopy versions.
We describe all operations from a theory A^* obtained from Algebraic Cobordism of M.Levine-F.Morel by change of coefficients to any oriented cohomology theory B^* (in the case of a field of characteristic zero). We prove that such an operation can be reconstructed out of it's action on the products of projective spaces. This reduces the construction of operations to algebra and extends the additive case done earlier, as well as the topological one obtained by T.Kashiwabara. The key new ingredients which permit us to treat the non-additive operations are: the use of "poly-operations" and the "D…
In this paper we show that certain universal homology classes which are fundamental in topology are algebraic. To be specific, the products of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces ${\cal K}_{2q} \equiv K({\Bbb Z},2) \times K({\Bbb Z}, 4) \times ... \times K({\Bbb Z}, 2q)$ have models which are limits of complex projective varieties. Precisely, we have ${\cal K}_{2q} = \lim_{d\to\infty}{\cal C}_d^q({\Bbb P}^n)$ where ${\cal C}_d^q({\Bbb P}^n)$ denotes the Chow variety of effective cycles of codimension $q$ and degree $d$ on ${\Bbb P}^n$. It is natural to ask which elements in the homology of ${\cal K}_{2q}…
We construct and study an algebraic theory which closely approximates the theory of power operations for Morava E-theory, extending previous work of Charles Rezk in a way that takes completions into account. These algebraic structures are made explicit in the case of K-theory. Methodologically, we emphasize the utility of flat modules in this context, and prove a general version of Lazard's flatness criterion for module spectra over associative ring spectra.
