We study the error detection problem in $ q $-ary asymmetric channels wherein every input symbol $ x_i $ is mapped to an output symbol $ y_i $ satisfying $ y_i \geq x_i $. A general setting is assumed where the noise vectors are (potentially) restricted in: 1) the amplitude, $ y_i - x_i \leq a $, 2) the Hamming weight, $ \sum_{i=1}^n 1_{\{y_i \neq x_i\}} \leq h $, and 3) the total weight, $ \sum_{i=1}^n (y_i - x_i) \leq t $. Optimal codes detecting these types of errors are described for certain sets of parameters $ a, h, t $, both in the standard and in the cyclic ($ \operatorname{mod}\, q $) version of the problem. It is also demonstrated that these codes are optimal in the large alphabet limit for every $ a, h, t $ and every block-length $ n $.
Several communication models that are of relevance in practice are asymmetric in the way they act on the transmitted "objects". Examples include channels in which the amplitudes of the transmitted pulses can only be decreased, channels in which the symbols can only be deleted, channels in which non-zero symbols can only be shifted to the right (e.g., timing channels), subspace channels in which the dimension of the transmitted vector space can only be reduced, unordered storage channels in which the cardinality of the stored (multi)set can only be reduced, etc. We introduce a formal definition…
In this paper we establish some criteria to decide when a discrete memoryless channel admits a metric in such a way that the maximum likelihood decoding coincides with the nearest neighbour decoding. In particular we prove a conjecture presented by M. Firer and J. L. Walker establishing that every binary asymmetric channel admits a matched metric.
Nonbinary Quantum Cyclic and Subsystem Codes Over Asymmetrically-decohered Quantum Channels
We introduce two notions of discrepancy between binary vectors, which are not metric functions in general but nonetheless capture the mathematical structure of the binary asymmetric channel. In turn, these lead to two new fundamental parameters of binary error-correcting codes, both of which measure the probability that the maximum likelihood decoder fails. We then derive various bounds for the cardinality and weight distribution of a binary code in terms of these new parameters, giving examples of codes meeting the bounds with equality.
We consider the discrete memoryless asymmetric broadcast channels. We prove that the error probability of decoding tends to one exponentially for rates outside the capacity region and derive an explicit lower bound of this exponent function. We shall demonstrate that the information spectrum approach is quite useful for investigating this problem.
In modern communication systems with feedback, there are increasingly more scenarios where the transmitter has much less power than the receiver (e.g., medical implant devices), which we refer to as noise-asymmetric channels. For such channels, the feedback link is of higher quality than the forward link. However, feedback schemes for cellular communications, such as hybrid ARQ, do not fully utilize the high-quality feedback link. To this end, we introduce Compressed Error Hybrid ARQ, a generalization of hybrid ARQ tailored for noise-asymmetric channels; the receiver sends its estimated messag…
In this paper, we investigate the generalized degrees-of-freedom (GDoF) of the asymmetric interference channel with delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), where each transmitter has two antennas, each receiver has one antenna, and the strength for each interfering link can vary. The optimal sum-GDoF is characterized by matched converse and achievability proof. Through our results, we also reveal that in our antenna setting, the symmetric GDoF lower bound in [Mohanty et. al, TIT 2019] can be elevated, and the symmetric GDoF upper bound in [Mohanty et. al, TIT 2019] is tigh…
A multilevel coded modulation scheme is studied that uses solely binary polar codes and Honda-Yamamoto probabilistic shaping. The scheme is shown to achieve the capacity of discrete memoryless channels with input alphabets of cardinality a power of two. The performance of finite-length implementations is compared to polar-coded probabilistic amplitude shaping and constant composition distribution matching.
This work contains two main contributions concerning the asymmetric broadcast channel. The first is an analysis of the exact random coding error exponents for both users, and the second is the derivation of universal decoders for both users. These universal decoders are certain variants of the maximum mutual information (MMI) universal decoder, which achieve the corresponding random coding exponents of optimal decoding. In addition, we introduce some lower bounds, which involve optimization over very few parameters, unlike the original, exact exponents, which involve minimizations over auxilia…
Zero-error single-channel source coding has been studied extensively over the past decades. Its natural multi-channel generalization is however not well investigated. While the special case with multiple symmetric-alphabet channels was studied a decade ago, codes in such setting have no advantage over single-channel codes in data compression, making them worthless in most applications. With essentially no development since the last decade, in this paper, we break the stalemate by showing that it is possible to beat single-channel source codes in terms of compression assuming asymmetric-alphabe…
We study the generalized degrees of freedom (gDoF) of block-fading noncoherent multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels with asymmetric distributions of link strengths and a coherence time of T symbol durations. We derive the optimal signaling structure for communication for the asymmetric MIMO channel, which is distinct from that for the MIMO channel with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) links. We extend the existing results for the single input multiple output (SIMO) channel with i.i.d. links to the asymmetric case, proving that selecting the statistically best antenna …
We study the problem of characterizing when two memoryless binary asymmetric channels, described by their transition probabilities $(p,q)$ and $(p',q')$, are equivalent from the point of view of maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) when restricted to $n$-block binary codes. This equivalence of channels induces a partition (depending on $n$) on the space of parameters $(p,q)$ into regions associated with the equivalence classes. Explicit expressions for describing these regions, their number and areas are derived. Some perspectives of applications of our results to decoding problems are also prese…
In communication through asymmetric channels the capacity-achieving input distribution is not uniform in general. Homophonic coding is a framework to invertibly convert a (usually uniform) message into a sequence with some target distribution, and is a promising candidate to generate codewords with the nonuniform target distribution for asymmetric channels. In particular, a Variable-to-Fixed length (VF) homophonic code can be used as a suitable component for channel codes to avoid decoding error propagation. However, the existing VF homophonic code requires the knowledge of the maximum relativ…
Consider the asymmetric broadcast channel with a random superposition codebook, which may be comprised of constant composition or \iid codewords. By applying Forney's optimal decoder for individual messages and the message pair for the receiver that decodes both messages, exact (ensemble-tight) error and erasure exponents are derived. It is shown that the optimal decoder designed to decode the pair of messages achieves the optimal trade-off between the total and undetected exponents associated with the optimal decoder for the private message. Convex optimization-based procedures to evaluate th…
This paper proposes a new model called \emph{spatial continuum asymmetric channels} to study the channel capacity region of asymmetric scenarios in which either one source transmits to a spatial density of receivers or a density of transmitters transmit to a unique receiver. This approach is built upon the classical broadcast channel (BC) and multiple access channel (MAC). For the sake of consistency, the study is limited to Gaussian channels with power constraints and is restricted to the asymptotic regime (zero-error capacity). The reference scenario comprises one base station (BS) in Tx or Rx…
This letter studies the optimal degrees of freedom (DoF) region for the asymmetric three-user MIMO Y channel with antenna configuration $(M_1,M_2,M_3,N)$, where $M_i$ is the number of antennas at user $i$ and $N$ is the number of antennas at the relay node. The converse is proved by using the cut-set theorem and the genie-message approach. To prove the achievability, we divide the DoF tuples in the outer bound into two cases. For each case, we show that the DoF tuples are achievable by collectively utilizing antenna deactivation, pairwise signal alignment and cyclic signal alignment techniques…
This work contains two main contributions concerning the expurgation of hierarchical ensembles for the asymmetric broadcast channel. The first is an analysis of the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) decoders for the weak and strong user. Two different methods of code expurgation will be used, that will provide two competing error exponents. The second is the derivation of expurgated exponents under the generalized stochastic likelihood decoder (GLD). We prove that the GLD exponents are at least as tight as the maximum between the random coding error exponents derived in an earlier work by Averbu…
We present a constraint-coding scheme to correct asymmetric magnitude-$1$ errors in multi-level non-volatile memories. For large numbers of such errors, the scheme is shown to deliver better correction capability compared to known alternatives, while admitting low-complexity of decoding. Our results include an algebraic formulation of the constraint, necessary and sufficient conditions for correctability, a maximum-likelihood decoder running in complexity linear in the alphabet size, and upper bounds on the probability of failing to correct $t$ errors. Besides the superior rate-correction trad…
For a number of quantum channels of interest, phase-flip errors occur far more frequently than bit-flip errors. When transmitting across these asymmetric channels, the decoding error rate can be reduced by tailoring the code used to the channel. However, analyzing the performance of stabilizer codes on these channels is made difficult by the #P-completeness of optimal decoding. To address this, at least for short codes, we demonstrate that the decoding error rate can be approximated by considering only a fraction of the possible errors caused by the channel. Using this approximate error rate c…
Authentication is a key element of security, by which a receiver confirms the sender identity of a message. Typical approaches include either key-based authentication at the application layer or physical layer authentication (PLA), where a message is considered authentic if it appears to have gone through the legitimate channel. In both cases a source of randomness is needed, whereas for PLA the random nature of the communication channel is exploited. In this paper we compare the various approaches using in all cases the channel as a source of randomness. We consider a multiple-input multiple-…
Simultaneous transmission of information and power over a point-to-point flat-fading complex Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel is studied. In contrast with the literature that relies on an inaccurate linear model of the energy harvester, an experimentally-validated nonlinear model is considered. A general form of the delivered Direct Current (DC) power in terms of system baseband parameters is derived, which demonstrates the dependency of the delivered DC power on higher order statistics of the channel input distribution. The optimization problem of maximizing Rate-Power (R-P) regio…
In this paper, we consider the problem of variable-length coding over the class of memoryless binary asymmetric channels (BACs) with noiseless feedback, including the binary symmetric channel (BSC) as a special case. In 2012, Naghshvar et al. introduced an encoding scheme, which we refer to as the small-enough-difference (SED) encoder, which asymptotically achieves both capacity and Burnashev's optimal error exponent for symmetric binary-input channels. Building on the work of Naghshvar et al., this paper extends the SED encoding scheme to the class of BACs and develops a non-asymptotic upper …
The concept of asymmetric entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting code (asymmetric EAQECC) is introduced in this article. Codes of this type take advantage of the asymmetry in quantum errors since phase-shift errors are more probable than qudit-flip errors. Moreover, they use pre-shared entanglement between encoder and decoder to simplify the theory of quantum error correction and increase the communication capacity. Thus, asymmetric EAQECCs can be constructed from any pair of classical linear codes over an arbitrary field. Their parameters are described and a Gilbert-Varshamov bound is…
We propose efficient coding schemes for two communication settings: 1. asymmetric channels, and 2. channels with an informed encoder. These settings are important in non-volatile memories, as well as optical and broadcast communication. The schemes are based on non-linear polar codes, and they build on and improve recent work on these settings. In asymmetric channels, we tackle the exponential storage requirement of previously known schemes, that resulted from the use of large Boolean functions. We propose an improved scheme, that achieves the capacity of asymmetric channels with polynomial co…
Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) over a point-to-point frequency-selective Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel is studied. Considering an approximation of the nonlinearity of the harvester, a general form of delivered power in terms of system baseband parameters is derived, which demonstrates the dependency of the delivered power on higher order moment of the baseband channel input distribution. The optimization problem of maximizing Rate-Power (RP) region is studied. Assuming that the Channel State Information (CSI) is available at both the receiver and th…
In this paper, we study the optimal degrees of freedom (DoF) region for the two-pair MIMO two-way relay channel (TWRC) with asymmetric antenna setting, where two pairs of users exchange information with the help of a common relay. Each user $i$ is equipped with $M_i$ antennas, for $i=1,2,3,4$, and the relay is equipped with $N$ antennas. First, we derive an outer bound of the DoF region by using the cut-set theorem and the genie-message approach. Then, we propose a new transmission scheme to achieve the outer bound of the DoF region. Due to the asymmetric data exchange, where the two users in …
Limited magnitude asymmetric error model is well suited for flash memory. In this paper, we consider the construction of asymmetric codes correcting single error over $\mathbb{Z}_{2^{k}r}$ and which are based on so called $B_{1}[4](2^{k}r)$ set. In fact, we reduce the construction of a maximal size $B_{1}[4](2^{k}r)$ set for $k\geq3$ to the construction of a maximal size $B_{1}[4](2^{k-3}r)$ set. Finally, we give a explicit formula of a maximal size $B_{1}[4](4r)$ set and some lower bounds of a maximal size $B_{1}[4](2r)$ set. By computer searching up to $q\leq106$, we conjecture that those lo…
We propose and prove an existential theorem for entanglement-assisted asymmetric quantum error correction. Then we demonstrate its superiority over the conventional one.
We survey coding techniques that enable reliable transmission at rates that approach the capacity of an arbitrary discrete memoryless channel. In particular, we take the point of view of modern coding theory and discuss how recent advances in coding for symmetric channels help provide more efficient solutions for the asymmetric case. We consider, in more detail, three basic coding paradigms. The first one is Gallager's scheme that consists of concatenating a linear code with a non-linear mapping so that the input distribution can be appropriately shaped. We explicitly show that both polar code…
One of the main challenge for an efficient implementation of quantum information technologies is how to counteract quantum noise. Quantum error correcting codes are therefore of primary interest for the evolution towards quantum computing and quantum Internet. We here analyze the performance of surface codes, one of the most important class for practical implementations, on both symmetric and asymmetric quantum channels. We derive approximate expressions, confirmed by simulations, to evaluate the performance of surface codes and of XZZX codes, and provide a metric to assess the advantage of co…
In wireless networks, link strengths are often affected by some topological factors such as propagation path loss, shadowing and inter-cell interference. Thus, different users in the network might experience different link strengths. In this work we consider a K-user asymmetric interference channel, where the channel gains of the links connected to Receiver k are scaled with P^{α_k /2}}, k=1,2,...,K, for 0< α_1 \leq α_2 \leq \cdots \leq α_K \leq 1. For this setting, we show that the optimal sum generalized degrees-of-freedom (GDoF) is characterized as dsum = (\sum_{k=1}^K α_k + α_K -α_{K-1})/2…
Recently, Galindo et al. introduced the concept of asymmetric entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (AEAQECCs) from Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) construction. In general, it's difficult to determine the required number of maximally entangled states of an AEAQECC, which is associated with the dimension of the intersection of the two corresponding linear codes. Two linear codes are said to be a linear l-intersection pair if their intersection has dimension l. In this paper, all possible linear l-intersection pairs of MDS codes are given. As an application, we give a complete chara…
