Using numerical simulations of forced turbulence, it is shown that for magnetic Reynolds numbers larger than unity, i.e., beyond the regime of quasilinear theory, the turbulent magnetic diffusivity attains an additional negative contribution that is quadratic in the kinetic helicity. In particular, for large magnetic Reynolds numbers, the turbulent magnetic diffusivity without helicity is about twice the value with helicity. Such a contribution was not previously anticipated, but, as we discuss, it turns out to be important when accurate estimates of the turbulent magnetic diffusivity are needed.
The velocity-vorticity correlation integral (Chkhetiani invariant) is an invariant of a viscous Karman-Howarth equation. In the tree-dimensional space this invariant can naturally determine a turbulent diffusivity (viscosity). It is shown, using results of direct numerical simulations, that distributed chaos dominated by this integral can provide an adequate description of the turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, stably stratified turbulence and Rayleigh-Taylor mixing at Prandtl number $Pr \sim 1$.
Passive scalar mixing, produced by Lagrangian chaos generated a) by quasi-periodic (integrable) motion of three quasi-point vortices and b) by chaotic motion of three and six quasi-point vortices, has been studied and compared with turbulent mixing of passive scalar in 2D and 3D steady isotropic homogeneous turbulence and in turbulent wakes behind grid and behind cylinder. Results of numerical and laboratory experiments have been used and effective diffusivity approximation as well as distributed chaos approach have been applied to this problem.
We analytically investigate the effective-diffusivity tensor of a tracer particle in a fluid flow endowed with a short correlation time. By means of functional calculus and a multiscale expansion, we write down the main contributions to the eddy diffusivity due to each single physical effect and to their interplays. Namely, besides molecular diffusivity and a constant uniform mean streaming, we take into account the possibility for the (incompressible, Gaussian, stationary, homogeneous, isotropic) turbulent fluctuations to break parity invariance. With respect to the classical turbulence-drive…
Transport equation of the dissipation rate of turbulent helicity is derived with the aid of a statistical analytical closure theory of inhomogeneous turbulence. It is shown that an assumption on the helicity scaling with an algebraic relationship between the helicity and its dissipation rate leads to the transport equation of the turbulent helicity dissipation rate without resorting to a heuristic modeling.
A new simple dynamo model for stellar activity cycle is proposed. By considering an inhomogeneous mean flow effect on turbulence, it is shown that turbulent cross helicity (velocity--magnetic-field correlation) should enter the expression of turbulent electromotive force as the coupling coefficient for the mean absolute vorticity. The inclusion of the cross-helicity effect makes the present model different from the current $α$--$Ω$-type models mainly in two points. First, in addition to the usual $α$ (helicity effect) and $β$ (turbulent magnetic diffusivity), we consider the $γ$ coefficient (c…
In this paper we employ renormalized viscosity and thermal diffusivity to construct a subgrid-scale model for large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent thermal convection. For LES, we add $ν_\mathrm{ren} \propto Π_u^{1/3} (π/Δ)^{-1/3}$ to the kinematic viscosity; here $Π_u$ is the turbulent kinetic energy flux, and $Δ$ is the grid spacing. In our model, the turbulent Prandtl number is unity. We performed LES of turbulent thermal convection on a $128^3$ grid and compare the results with direct numerical simulation (DNS) on a $512^3$ grid. There is a good agreement between the LES and DNS results…
(abridged) Context: Turbulent diffusion of large-scale flows and magnetic fields play major roles in many astrophysical systems. Aims: Our goal is to compute turbulent viscosity and magnetic diffusivity, relevant for diffusing large-scale flows and magnetic fields, respectively, and their ratio, the turbulent magnetic Prandtl number, ${\rm Pm}_{\rm t}$, for isotropically forced homogeneous turbulence. Methods: We use simulations of forced turbulence in fully periodic cubes composed of isothermal gas with an imposed large-scale sinusoidal shear flow. Turbulent viscosity is computed either from …
Turbulent mixing is a physical process of fundamental importance in high-speed premixed flames. This mixing results in enhanced transport of temperature and chemical scalars, leading to potentially large changes in flame structure and dynamics. To understand turbulent mixing in non-reacting flows, a number of classical theories have been proposed to describe the scaling and statistics of dispersing fluid particle pairs, including predictions of the effective, or turbulent, eddy diffusivity. Here we examine the validity of these classical theories through the study of fluid particle pair disper…
Using direct numerical simulations we demonstrate that magnetic helicity exhibits a bidirectional turbulent cascade at high but finite magnetic Reynolds numbers. Despite the injection of positive magnetic helicity in the flow, we observe that magnetic helicity of opposite signs is generated between large and small scales. We explain these observations by carrying out an analysis of the magnetohydrodynamic equations reduced to triad interactions using the Fourier helical decomposition. Within this framework, the direct cascade of positive magnetic helicity arises through triad interactions that…
We introduce six families of three-dimensional space-periodic steady solenoidal flows, whose kinetic helicity density is zero at any point. Four families are analytically defined. Flows in four families have zero helicity spectrum. Sample flows from five families are used to demonstrate numerically that neither zero kinetic helicity density, nor zero helicity spectrum prohibit generation of large-scale magnetic field by the two most prominent dynamo mechanisms: the magnetic $α$-effect and negative eddy diffusivity. Our computations also attest that such flows often generate small-scale field f…
Shear-induced turbulence could play a significant role in mixing momentum and chemical species in stellar radiation zones, as discussed by Zahn (1974). In this paper we analyze the results of direct numerical simulations of stratified plane Couette flows, in the limit of rapid thermal diffusion, to measure the turbulent diffusivity and turbulent viscosity as a function of the local shear and the local stratification. We find that the stability criterion proposed by Zahn (1974), namely that the product of the gradient Richardson number and the Prandtl number must be smaller than a critical valu…
Much work on turbulent three-dimensional dynamos has been done using triply periodic domains, in which there are no magnetic helicity fluxes. Here we present simulations where the turbulent intensity is still nearly homogeneous, but now there is a perfect conductor boundary condition on one end and a vertical field or pseudo-vacuum condition on the other. This leads to migratory dynamo waves. Good agreement with a corresponding analytically solvable alpha^2 dynamo is found. Magnetic helicity fluxes are studied in both types of models. It is found that at moderate magnetic Reynolds numbers, mos…
One of the most enigmatic science question concerning inertial particle transport by a turbulent boundary layer flow is the value of the turbulent Schmidt number as the ratio of particle diffusivity and turbulent eddy viscosity. Using direct acoustic measurement of turbulent particle flux profile, and two-phase flow turbulence-resolving numerical simulation, it is demonstrated that turbulent dispersion of particles is reduced rather than enhanced when predicted with existing literature model. The explanation lies in the misleading assumption of settling velocity in quiescent water to estimate …
The contribution of small scale turbulent fluctuations to the induction of mean magnetic field is investigated in our liquid sodium spherical Couette experiment with an imposed magnetic field. An inversion technique is applied to a large number of measurements at $Rm \approx 100$ to obtain radial profiles of the $α$ and $β$ effects and maps of the mean flow.It appears that the small scale turbulent fluctuations can be modeled as a strong contribution to the magnetic diffusivity that is negative in the interior region and positive close to the outer shell.Direct numerical simulations of our expe…
Helicity, as one of only two inviscid invariants in three-dimensional turbulence, plays an important role in the generation and evolution of turbulence. From the traditional viewpoint, there exists only one channel of helicity cascade similar to that of kinetic energy cascade. Through theoretical analysis, we find that there are two channels in helicity cascade process. The first channel mainly originates from vortex twisting process, and the second channel mainly originates from vortex stretching process. By analysing the data of direct numerical simulations of typical turbulent flows, we fin…
The effect of kinetic helicity (velocity--vorticity correlation) on turbulent momentum transport is investigated. The turbulent kinetic helicity (pseudoscalar) enters the Reynolds stress (mirrorsymmetric tensor) expression in the form of a helicity gradient as the coupling coefficient for the mean vorticity and/or the angular velocity (axial vector), which suggests the possibility of mean-flow generation in the presence of inhomogeneous helicity. This inhomogeneous helicity effect, which was previously confirmed at the level of a turbulence- or closure-model simulation, is examined with the ai…
It is known that turbulent energy is rapidly transferred in the direction of the rotation axis in a rotating system, in comparison with the non-rotating case. In this study, this phenomenon is investigated as a problem of energy diffusion expressed by the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model. The conventional gradient-diffusion approximation for the turbulent energy flux cannot account for the enhanced energy transport observed in rotating inhomogeneous turbulence. In order to adequately describe the phenomenon, we propose a new model for the energy flux due to the pressure associated …
It is shown that helicity dynamics dominates spectral distribution of the velocity fluctuations in turbulent thermal convection at moderate and large values of the Rayleigh number (distributed chaos and scaling respectively). The large-scale circulation (wind) in the turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is especially sensitive to the helicity dynamics and its chaotic reversals can be associated with the reversals of the mean helicity sign (the ergodic restoration of the reflectional symmetry in a long run). Results of the laboratory experiments and measurements in the free atmospheric convecti…
The cross helicity (velocity--magnetic-field correlation) effects in the magnetic-field induction and momentum transport in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence are investigated with the aid of the multiple-scale renormalized perturbation expansion analysis. The outline of the theory is presented with reference to the role of the cross-interaction response functions between the velocity and magnetic field. In this formulation, the expressions of the turbulent fluxes: the turbulent electromotive force (EMF) in the mean induction equation and the Reynolds and turbulent Maxwell stresses in th…
Pointwise zero velocity helicity density is shown not to prevent steady flows from acting as kinematic dynamos. We present numerical evidences that such flows can generate both small-scale magnetic fields as well as, by the magnetic $α$-effect or negative eddy diffusivity mechanisms, large-scale ones. The flows are constructed as curls of analytically defined space-periodic steady solenoidal flows, whose vorticity helicity (i.e., kinetic helicity) density is everywhere zero.
Motivated by the empirical finding that the known hemispheric rules for the current helicity at the solar surface are not strict, the excitation of small-scale current helicity by the influence of a large-scale helical magnetic background fields on nonrotating magnetoconvection is demonstrated. It is shown within a quasilinear analytic theory of driven turbulence and by nonlinear simulations of magnetoconvection that the resulting small-scale current helicity has the same sign as the large-scale current helicity while the ratio of both pseudo-scalars is of the order of the magnetic Reynolds nu…
The solar tachocline is a shear layer located at the base of the solar convection zone. The horizontal shear in the tachocline is likely turbulent, and it is often assumed that this turbulence would be strongly anisotropic as a result of the local stratification. What role this turbulence plays in the tachocline dynamics, however, remains to be determined. In particular, it is not clear whether it would result in a turbulent eddy diffusivity, or anti-diffusivity, or something else entirely. In this paper, we present the first direct numerical simulations of turbulence in horizontal shear flows…
Kinetic helicity (hereafter helicity) is defined by the correlation between the velocity and the flow-aligned vorticity. Helicity, as well as energy, is an inviscid invariant of the hydrodynamic equations. In contrast to energy, a measure of the turbulent intensity, turbulent helicity, representing right- and left-handed twist associated with a fluctuating motion, provides a measure of the structural or topological property of the fluctuation. The helicity effect on the turbulent transport can be analytically obtained in the framework of the multiple-scale renormalized perturbation expansion t…
The effect of the helicity on the dynamics of the turbulent flows is investigated. The aim is to disentangle the role of helicity in fixing the direction, the intensity and the fluctuations of the energy transfer across the inertial range of scales. We introduce an external parameter, $α$, that controls the mismatch between the number of positive and negative helically polarized Fourier modes. We present the first set of direct numerical simulations of Navier-Stokes equations from the fully symmetrical case, $α=0$, to the fully asymmetrical case, $α=1$, when only helical modes of one sign surv…
To predict the mean temperature profiles in turbulent thermal convection, the thermal boundary layer (BL) equation including the effects of fluctuations has to be solved. In Shishkina et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114 (2015), the thermal BL equation with the fluctuations taken into account as an eddy thermal diffusivity has been solved for large Prandtl-number fluids for which the eddy thermal diffusivity and the velocity field can be approximated respectively as a cubic and a linear function of the distance from the plate. In the present work we make use of the idea of Prandtl's mixing length mode…
In this paper we investigate the dynamics of magnetic helicity in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulent flows focusing at scales larger than the forcing scale. Our results show a nonlocal inverse cascade of magnetic helicity, which occurs directly from the forcing scale into the largest scales of the magnetic field. We also observe that no magnetic helicity and no energy is transferred to an intermediate range of scales sufficiently smaller than the container size and larger than the forcing scale. Thus, the statistical properties of this range of scales, which increases with scale separation, i…
We develop a mean-field theory of compressibility effects in turbulent magnetohydrodynamics and passive scalar transport using the quasi-linear approximation and the spectral $τ$-approach. We find that compressibility decreases the $α$ effect and the turbulent magnetic diffusivity both at small and large magnetic Reynolds numbers, Rm. Similarly, compressibility decreases the turbulent diffusivity for passive scalars both at small and large Péclet numbers, Pe. On the other hand, compressibility does not affect the effective pumping velocity of the magnetic field for large Rm, but it decreases i…
Solutions of the forced Navier-Stokes equation have been conjectured to thermalize at scales larger than the forcing scale, similar to an absolute equilibrium obtained for the spectrally-truncated Euler equation. Using direct numeric simulations of Taylor-Green flows and general-periodic helical flows, we present results on the probability density function, energy spectrum, auto-correlation function and correlation time that compare the two systems. In the case of highly helical flows, we derive an analytic expression describing the correlation time for the absolute equilibrium of helical flow…

We present numerical and theoretical results concerning the properties of turbulent flows with strong multi-scale helical injection. We perform direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations under a random helical stirring with power-law spectrum and with different intensities of energy and helicity injections. We show that there exists three different regimes where the forward energy and helicity inertial transfers are: (i) both leading with respect to the external injections, (ii) energy transfer is leading and helicity transfer is sub-leading and (iii) both are sub-leading and …
A cylindrical and inclined jet in crossflow is studied under two distinct velocity ratios, $r=1$ and $r=2$, using highly resolved large eddy simulations (LES). First, an investigation of turbulent scalar mixing sheds light onto the previously observed but unexplained phenomenon of negative turbulent diffusivity. We identify two distinct types of counter gradient transport, prevalent in different regions: the first, throughout the windward shear layer, is caused by cross-gradient transport; the second, close to the wall right after injection, is caused by non-local effects. Then, we propose a d…
The excitation and further sustenance of large-scale magnetic fields in rotating astrophysical systems, including planets, stars and galaxies, is generally thought to involve a fluid magnetic dynamo effect driven by helical magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. While this scenario is appealing on general grounds, it however currently remains largely unconstrained, notably because a fundamental understanding of the nonlinear asymptotic behaviour of large-scale fluid magnetism in the astrophysically-relevant but treacherous regime of large magnetic Reynolds number $Rm$ is still lacking. We explore thi…
The conventional approach to the turbulent energy cascade, based on Richardson-Kolmogorov phenomenology, ignores the topology of emerging vortices, which is related to the helicity of the turbulent flow. It is generally believed that helicity can play a significant role in turbulent systems, e.g., supporting the generation of large-scale magnetic fields, but its impact on the energy cascade to small scales has never been observed. We suggest for the first time a generalized phenomenology for isotropic turbulence with an arbitrary spectral distribution of the helicity. We discuss various scenar…
The distributed chaos driven by Levich-Tsinober (helicity) integral: $I=\int \langle h({\bf x},t)~h({\bf x}+{\bf r}, t)\rangle d{\bf r}$ has been studied. It is shown that the helical distributed chaos can be considered as basis for complex turbulent flows with interplay between large-scale coherent structures and small-scale turbulence, such as Cuette-Taylor flow, wake behind cylinder and turbulent flow in the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) with inserted limiters. In the last case appearance of the helical distributed chaos, caused by the limiters, results in improvement of radial particle confin…
