We solve an inverse problem for fluid particle pair-statistics: we show that a time sequence of probability density functions (PDF's) of separations can be exactly reproduced by solving the diffusion equation with a suitable time-dependent diffusivity. The diffusivity tensor is given by a time-integral of a conditional Lagrangian velocity structure-function, weighted by a ratio of PDF's. Physical hypotheses for hydrodynamic turbulence (sweeping, short memory, mean-field) yield simpler integral formulas, including one of Kraichnan and Lundgren. We evaluate the latter using a spacetime database from a numerical Navier-Stokes solution for driven turbulence. This diffusion theory reproduces PDF's well at rms separations, but growth rate of mean-square dispersion is overpredicted due to neglect of memory effects. More general applications of our approach are sketched.
The role of initial separation for inertial range scaling of turbulent two-particle dispersion is reassessed in light of recent results. (slightly expanded version of Comment published in Physical Review Letters).
Chaotic and turbulent dispersion of passive heavy inertial particles in homogeneous two-dimensional turbulence with Ekman drag has been studied using notions of the effective diffusivity and distributed chaos. Results of recent direct numerical simulations have been used for this purpose. Effect of the Stokes number value on the applicability of these notions to the dispersion of passive heavy inertial particles has been briefly discussed.
One of the most enigmatic science question concerning inertial particle transport by a turbulent boundary layer flow is the value of the turbulent Schmidt number as the ratio of particle diffusivity and turbulent eddy viscosity. Using direct acoustic measurement of turbulent particle flux profile, and two-phase flow turbulence-resolving numerical simulation, it is demonstrated that turbulent dispersion of particles is reduced rather than enhanced when predicted with existing literature model. The explanation lies in the misleading assumption of settling velocity in quiescent water to estimate …
We present a generalization of turbulent pair dispersion to large initial separations ($η< r_0 < L$), by introducing a new time scale, $τ_{v_0}$, that reflects the persistence of initial conditions at time $τ=0$. Results of 3D Lagrangian tracking experiments at moderate Reynolds numbers show that pairs, for which the new time scale is shorter than the eddy turnover time scale, separate as in the Richardson superdiffusive regime, $\langle Δr^2 \rangle \propto τ^3$. The analysis of delay times (time interval to cross $Δr = ρ\, r_0$) of these conditionally sampled pairs exhibit $ρ^{2/5}$ scaling.
Due to large scale flow inhomogeneities and the effects of temperature, turbulence small-scale structure in thermal convection is still an active field of investigation, especially considering sophisticated Lagrangian statistics. Here we experimentally study Lagrangian pair dispersion (one of the canonical problems of Lagrangian turbulence) in a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell. A sufficiently high temperature difference is imposed on a horizontal layer of fluid to observe a turbulent flow. We perform Lagrangian tracking of sub-millimetric particles on a large measurement volume including part …
In Taylor's theory, the longitudinal dispersion in turbulent pipe flows approaches, on long timescales, a diffusive behavior with a constant diffusivity $K_L$, that depends \emph{empirically} on the Reynolds number $Re$. We show that the dependence on $Re$ can be determined from the turbulent energy spectrum. By using the intimate connection between the friction factor and longitudinal dispersion in wall-bounded turbulence, we predict different asymptotic scaling laws of $K_L(Re)$ depending on the different turbulent cascades in two-dimensional turbulence. We also explore numerically the $K_L(…
Lagrangian tracking of particle pairs is of fundamental interest in a large number of environmental applications dealing with contaminant dispersion and passive scalar mixing. The aim of the present study is to extend the observations available in the literature on relative dispersion of fluid particle pairs to wall-bounded turbulent flows, by means of particle pair tracking in direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a turbulent channel flow. The mean-square change of separation between particle pairs follows a clear ballistic regime at short times for all wall distances. The Eulerian structure …
Experimental observations of turbulent buoyant plumes, produced by a constant source of buoyancy, have been described with great success using a horizontally averaged model for the conservation of mass, momentum and buoyancy flux. However, experimental observations of plumes with time-dependent buoyancy fluxes has proved more challenging for quantitative models. At each level in the plume, the horizontal variation in velocity leads to an along-axis shear and hence dispersive transport relative to the mean. With a time-dependent source, axial dispersion of the dynamic properties of the plume ha…
We study experimentally turbulent thermal diffusion of small particles in inhomogeneous and anisotropic stably stratified turbulence produced by one oscillating grid in the air flow. The velocity fields have been measured using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). We have determined various turbulence characteristics: the mean and turbulent velocities, two-point correlation functions of the velocity field and an integral scale of turbulence from the measured velocity fields. The temperature field have been measured with a temperature probe equipped with 12 E thermocouples. Spatial distributions…
Implementing multicomponent diffusion models in numerical combustion studies is computationally expensive; to reduce cost, numerical simulations commonly use mixture-averaged diffusion treatments or simpler models. However, the accuracy and appropriateness of mixture-averaged diffusion has not been verified for three-dimensional, turbulent, premixed flames. In this study we evaluated the role of multicomponent mass diffusion in premixed, three-dimensional high Karlovitz-number hydrogen, n-heptane, and toluene flames, representing a range of fuel Lewis numbers. We also studied a premixed, unsta…
Turbulent mixing is a physical process of fundamental importance in high-speed premixed flames. This mixing results in enhanced transport of temperature and chemical scalars, leading to potentially large changes in flame structure and dynamics. To understand turbulent mixing in non-reacting flows, a number of classical theories have been proposed to describe the scaling and statistics of dispersing fluid particle pairs, including predictions of the effective, or turbulent, eddy diffusivity. Here we examine the validity of these classical theories through the study of fluid particle pair disper…
An experimental Lagrangian study based on particle tracking velocimetry has been completed in an incompressible turbulent round water jet freely spreading into water. The jet is seeded with tracers only through the nozzle: inhomogeneous seeding called nozzle seeding. The Lagrangian flow tagged by these tracers therefore does not contain any contribution from particles entrained into the jet from the quiescent surrounding fluid. The mean velocity field of the nozzle seeded flow, $\langle \boldsymbol{U_φ} \rangle$, is found to be essentially indistinguishable from the global mean velocity field …

We present results from a numerical study of particle dispersion in the weakly nonlinear regime of Rayleigh-Bénard convection of a fluid with Prandtl number around unity, where bi-stability between ideal straight convection rolls and weak turbulence in the form of Spiral Defect Chaos exists. While Lagrangian pair statistics has become a common tool for studying fully developed turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers, we show that key characteristics of mass transport can also be found in convection systems that show no or weak turbulence. Specifically, for short times, we find Richardson-like…
Experimental results for passive tracer dispersion in the turbulent surface layer under convective conditions are presented. In this case, the dispersion of tracer particles is determined by the interplay of two mechanisms: buoyancy and advection. In the atmospheric surface layer under stable stratification the buoyancy mechanism dominates when the distance from the ground is greater than the Monin-Obukhov length, resulting in a different exponent in the scaling law of relative separation of lagrangian particles (deviation from the celebrated Richardson's law). This conclusion is supported by …
In this paper, phenomenological developments are used to explore several aspects of the relative particle dispersion (RPD) in different physical fully-developed turbulence (FDT) situations. The role played by the FDT cascade physics underlying this process is investigated. Many of these aspects are motivated by previous laboratory experiment and numerical simulation results. These are, * spatial intermittency effects exhibiting, * [(a)] reduction of RPD in 3D FDT, corroborating the numerical simulation results (Boffetta and Sokolov [11]); *[(b)] prevalence of power-law scaling of RPD in 2D FDT…
We study turbulent diffusion of chemically reacting gaseous admixtures in a developed turbulence. In our previous study [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 69 (1998)] using a path-integral approach for a delta-correlated in time random velocity field, we demonstrated a strong modification of turbulent transport in fluid flows with chemical reactions or phase transitions. In the present study we use the spectral tau approximation, that is valid for large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, and show that turbulent diffusion of the reacting species can be strongly depleted by a large factor that is the ratio of…
A deterministic multi-scale dynamical system is introduced and discussed as prototype model for relative dispersion in stationary, homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. Unlike stochastic diffusion models, here trajectory transport and mixing properties are entirely controlled by Lagrangian Chaos. The anomalous "sweeping effect", a known drawback common to kinematic simulations, is removed thanks to the use of quasi-Lagrangian coordinates. Lagrangian dispersion statistics of the model are accurately analysed by computing the Finite-Scale Lyapunov Exponent (FSLE), which is the optimal measure of…
The theory of turbulent diffusion of chemically reacting gaseous admixtures developed previously (Phys. Rev. E {\bf 90}, 053001, 2014) is generalized for large yet finite Reynolds numbers, and the dependence of turbulent diffusion coefficient versus two parameters, the Reynolds number and Damköhler number (which characterizes a ratio of turbulent and reaction time scales) is obtained. Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a finite thickness reaction wave for the first-order chemical reactions propagating in forced, homogeneous, isotropic, and incompressible turbulence are per…
We propose a unified framework to study the turbulent transport problem from the perspective of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. By combining Krarichnan's turbulence thermalization assumption and Ruelle's recent work on nonequilibrium statistical mechanics settings for fluids, we show that the equation for viscous fluid can be viewed as the non-canonical Hamiltonian system perturbed by different thermostats. This allows an analogy between the viscous fluid and the nonequilibrium heat conduction model where the Fourier modes can be regarded as the ''particles''. With this framework, we ref…
In the present study, soot formation in the turbulent lifted diffusion flame, consisting of ethylene-air is numerically investigated using three different soot modeling approaches and is comprehensively reported. For turbulence-chemistry interaction, Flamelet generated manifold (FGM) model is used. A detailed kinetics is used which is represented through POLIMI mechanism (Ranzi et al. 2012). Soot formation is modeled using two different approaches, semi-empirical two-equation approach and Quadrature methods of moments approach, where both the approaches consider various sub-processes such as n…
Radiation transport plays important roles in stellar atmospheres, but the effects of turbulence are being obscured by other effects such as stratification. Using radiative hydrodynamic simulations of forced turbulence, we determine the decay rates of sinusoidal large-scale temperature perturbations of different wavenumbers in the optically thick and thin regimes. Increasing the wavenumber increases the rate of decay in both regimes, but this effect is much weaker than for the usual turbulent diffusion of passive scalars, where the increase is quadratic for small wavenumbers. The turbulent deca…
Local regions of anomalous particle dispersion, and intermittent events that occur in turbulent flows can greatly influence the global statistical description of the flow. These local behaviors can be identified and analyzed by comparing the growth of neighboring convex hulls of Lagrangian tracer particles. Although in our simulations of homogeneous turbulence the convex hulls generally grow in size, after the Lagrangian particles that define the convex hulls begin to disperse, our analysis reveals short periods when the convex hulls of the Lagrangian particles shrink, evidence that particles …
