We study material lines and passive vectors in a model of turbulent flow at infinite-Reynolds number, the Kraichnan-Kazantsev ensemble of velocities that are white-noise in time and rough (Hoelder continuous) in space. It is argued that the phenomenon of ``spontaneous stochasticity'' generalizes to material lines and that conservation of circulations generalizes to a ``martingale property'' of the stochastic process of lines.
Kelvin's Theorem on conservation of circulations is an essential ingredient of G. I. Taylor's theory of turbulent energy dissipation by the process of vortex-line stretching. In previous work, we have proposed a nonlinear mechanism for the breakdown of Kelvin's Theorem in ideal turbulence at infinite Reynolds number. We develop here a detailed physical theory of this ``cascade of circulations''. Our analysis is based upon an effective equation for large-scale ``coarse-grained'' velocity, which contains a turbulent-induced ``vortex-force'' that can violate Kelvin's Theorem. We show that singula…
We study intermittency of circulation moments in turbulent superfluid helium by using experimental grid turbulence and numerical simulations of the Hall-Vinen-Bekarevich-Khalatnikov model. More precisely, we compute the velocity circulation $Γ_r$ in loops of size $r$ laying in the inertial range. For both, experimental and numerical data, the circulation variance shows a clear Kolmogorov scaling $\langle Γ_r^2 \rangle \sim r^{8/3}$ in the inertial range, independently of the temperature. Scaling exponents of high-order moments are comparable, within error bars, to previously reported anomalous…
We report the experimental study of the bifurcations of a large-scale circulation that is formed over a turbulent flow generated by a spatially periodic forcing. After shortly describing how the flow becomes turbulent through a sequence of symmetry breaking bifurcations, we focus our study on the transitions that occur within the turbulent regime. They are related to changes in the shape of the probability density function (PDF) of the amplitude of the large scale flow. We discuss the nature of these bifurcations and how to model the shape of the PDF.
We discuss the surprising connection between turbulent circulation statistics and minimal surfaces, as recently established by Iyer et al. [Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 118(43), e2114679118 (2021)].
The circulation around any closed loop is a Lagrangian invariant for classical, smooth solutions of the incompressible Euler equations in any number of space dimensions. However, singular solutions relevant to turbulent flows need not preserve the classical integrals of motion. Here we generalize the Kelvin theorem on conservation of circulations to distributional solutions of Euler and give necessary conditions for the anomalous dissipation of circulations. We discuss the important role of Kelvin's theorem in turbulent vortex-stretching dynamics and conjecture a version of the theorem which m…
Statistical properties of circulation encode relevant information about the multi-scale structure of turbulent cascades. Recent massive computational efforts have posed challenging theoretical issues, as the dependence of circulation moments upon Reynolds numbers and length scales, and the specific shape of the heavy-tailed circulation probability distribution functions. We address these focal points in an investigation of circulation statistics for planar cuts of three-dimensional flows. The model introduced here borrows ideas from the structural approach to turbulence, whereby turbulent flow…
A model for the large-scale circulation (LSC) dynamics of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection is presented. It consists of two stochastic ordinary differential equations motivated by the Navier-Stokes equation, one each for the strength and the azimuthal orientation of the LSC. Stochastic forces represent phenomenologically the action of the turbulent fluctuations on the LSC. Without adjustable parameters, the model yields a meandering LSC with occasional rotations, and with more rare cessations that occur a few times per day -- differing only by about a factor of two from experiment. Also as…
Recent numerical explorations of extremely intense circulation fluctuations at high Reynolds number flows have brought to light novel aspects of turbulent intermittency. Vortex gas modeling ideas, introduced alongside such developments, have led to accurate descriptions of the core and the intermediate tails of circulation probability distribution functions (cPDFs), as well as the scaling exponents associated to statistical moments of circulation. We extend the predictive reach of the vortex gas picture of turbulence, by emphasizing that multifractality breaking, one of its salient phenomenolo…
In turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection, a large-scale circulation (LSC) develops in a nearly vertical plane, and is maintained by rising and falling plumes detaching from the unstable thermal boundary layers. Rare but large fluctuations in the LSC amplitude can lead to extinction of the LSC (a cessation event), followed by the re-emergence of another LSC with a different (random) azimuthal orientation. We extend previous models of the LSC dynamics to include momentum and thermal diffusion in the azimuthal plane, and calculate the tails of the probability distributions of both the amplitude an…
Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in slender cylindrical cells exhibits rich dynamics of the large-scale circulation (LSC), with several rolls stacked on top of each other. We propose that the elliptical instability is the mechanism which causes the twisting and breaking of the LSC into multiple rolls and that the volume-averaged heat and momentum transport, represented by the Nusselt number and Reynolds number, is generally weaker for larger number $n$ of the LSC rolls. This is supported by direct numerical simulations for $Ra=5\times10^5$, $Pr=0.1$, $H=5D$ and $1\leq~n\leq4$.
The small-scale statistical properties of velocity circulation in classical homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flows are assessed through a modeling framework that brings together the multiplicative cascade and the structural descriptions of turbulence. We find that vortex structures exhibit short-distance repulsive correlations, which is evidenced when they are "tomographically" investigated, by means of planar cuts of the flow, as two-dimensional vortex gases. This phenomenon is suggested from model improvements which allow us to obtain an accurate multiscale description of the intermittent…
We present measurements of the orientation theta_0(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in cylindrical cells of aspect ratio 1. theta_0(t) undergoes irregular reorientations. It contains reorientation events by rotation through angles Delta theta with a monotonically decreasing probability distribution p(Delta theta), and by cessations (where the LSC stops temporarily) with a uniform p(Delta theta). Reorientations have Poissonian statistics in time. The amplitude of the LSC and the magnitude of the azimuthal rotation rate have a negative correlation.
It is shown that helicity dynamics dominates spectral distribution of the velocity fluctuations in turbulent thermal convection at moderate and large values of the Rayleigh number (distributed chaos and scaling respectively). The large-scale circulation (wind) in the turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is especially sensitive to the helicity dynamics and its chaotic reversals can be associated with the reversals of the mean helicity sign (the ergodic restoration of the reflectional symmetry in a long run). Results of the laboratory experiments and measurements in the free atmospheric convecti…
We investigate the effect of weak rotation on the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, using the theory for cessations in a low-dimensional stochastic model of the flow previously studied. We determine the cessation frequency of the LSC as a function of rotation, and calculate the statistics of the amplitude and azimuthal velocity fluctuations of the LSC as a function of the rotation rate for different Rayleigh numbers. Furthermore, we show that the tails of the reorientation probability distribution function remain unchanged for rotating systems, while the di…

The Kelvin-Helmholtz theorem on conservation of circulations is supposed to hold for ideal inviscid fluids and is believed to be play a crucial role in turbulent phenomena, such as production of dissipation by vortex line-stretching. However, this expectation does not take into account singularities in turbulent velocity fields at infinite Reynolds number. We present evidence from numerical simulations for the breakdown of the classical Kelvin theorem in the three-dimensional turbulent energy cascade. Although violated in individual realizations, we find that circulations are still conserved i…
We present a broad range of measurements of the angular orientation theta_0(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection as a function of time. We used two cylindrical samples of different overall sizes, but each with its diameter nearly equal to its height. The fluid was water with a Prandtl number of 4.38. The time series theta_0(t) consisted of meanderings similar to a diffusive process, but in addition contained large and irregular spontaneous reorientation events through angles Delta theta. We found that reorientations can occur by two distinct mechanism…
Recent studies of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection at high rotation rates and strong thermal forcing have shown a significant discrepancy in total heat transport between experiments on a confined cylindrical domain on the one hand and simulations on a laterally unconfined periodic domain on the other. This paper addresses this discrepancy using direct numerical simulations on a cylindrical domain. An analysis of the flow field reveals a region of enhanced convection near the wall, the sidewall circulation. The sidewall circulation rotates slowly within the cylinder in anticyclonic direction…
In agreement with a recent experimental discovery by Xia et. al. (2009), we also find a sloshing mode in experiments on the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio one. The sloshing mode has the same frequency as the torsional oscillation discovered by Funfschilling and Ahlers (2004). We show that both modes can be described by an extension of a model developed previously [Brown and Ahlers (2008)] which consists of permitting a lateral displacement of the LSC circulation plane away from the vertical center line of the sample…
We present a direct numerical simulation on the dynamics of large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection of air (Pr = 0.7) contained in a cubic cell for Rayleigh number range 2X10^6 < Ra < 10^9 . The strength and orientation of LSC are quantified by the amplitude and phase of the first Fourier mode of the vertical velocity. The plane containing LSC is generally aligned along one of the diagonals of the box accompanied by a four-roll structure in the other. However, an abnormal single-roll state with substructures is noted at the face planes for low Ra. In addition to t…
Experimental measurements of properties of the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent convection of a fluid heated from below in a cylindrical container of aspect ratio one are presented and used to test a model of diffusion in a potential well for the LSC. The model consists of a pair of stochastic ordinary differential equations motivated by the Navier-Stokes equations. The two coupled equations are for the azimuthal orientation theta_0, and for the azimuthal temperature amplitude delta at the horizontal midplane. The dynamics is due to the driving by Gaussian distributed white noise tha…
We present measurements of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in water-filled cylindrical samples of heights equal to their diameters. The orientation of the LSC had an irregular time dependence, but revealed a net azimuthal rotation with an average period of about 3 days for Rayleigh numbers R > 10^10. On average there was also a tendency for the LSC to be aligned with upflow to the west and downflow to the east, even after physically rotating the apparatus in the laboratory through various angles. Both of these phenomena could be explained as a result o…

Two types of spontaneous breaking of the space translational symmetry in distributed chaos have been considered for turbulent thermal convection at large values of Rayleigh number. First type is related to boundaries and second type is related to appearance of inertial range of scales. The first type is dominated by vorticity correlation integral: $\int_{V} \langle {\boldsymbol ω} ({\bf x},t) \cdot {\boldsymbol ω} ({\bf x} + {\bf r},t) \rangle_{V} d{\bf r}$ and is characterized by stretched exponential spectrum $\exp-(k/k_β)^{β}$ with $β=1/2$. The second type is dominated by energy correlation…
In this paper, we present results from an experimental study into turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection forced externally by periodically modulated unidirectional rotation rates. We find that the azimuthal rotation velocity $\dotθ$(t) and thermal amplitude $δ$(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) are modulated by the forcing, exhibiting a variety of dynamics including increasing phase delays and a resonant peak in the amplitude of $\dotθ$(t). We also focus on the influence of modulated rotation rates on the frequency of occurrence $η$ of stochastic cessation/reorientation events, and on the …
We present a direct numerical simulation to investigate the dynamics and statistics of reorientations of large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RRBC) for air ($Pr=0.7$) contained in a cylindrical cell with unit aspect ratio. A wide range of rotation rates ($0\leq Ro^{-1}\leq 30$) is considered for two different Rayleigh numbers $Ra=2\times10^6$ and $2\times10^7$. Using the Fourier mode analysis of time series data obtained from the different probes placed in the azimuthal direction of the container at the mid-plane, the orientation and associated dynami…
We report an experimental study of the large-scale circulation (LSC) in a turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell with aspect ratio unity. The temperature-extremum-extraction (TEE) method for obtaining the dynamic information of the LSC is presented. With this method, the azimuthal angular positions of the hot ascending and cold descending flows along the sidewall are identified from the measured instantaneous azimuthal temperature profile. The motion of the LSC is then decomposed into two different modes: the azimuthal mode and the translational or off-center mode. Comparing to the previous…
We present observations of oscillations in the shape of the temperature profile of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection. Temperature measurements are broken down into Fourier moments as a function of $θ-θ_0$, where $θ$ is the azimuthal angle in a horizontal plane at mid-height, and $θ_0$ is the LSC orientation. The oscillation structure is dominated by a 3rd order sine moment and 3rd order cosine moment in a cubic cell. In contrast, these moments are not found to oscillate in a cylindrical cell. This geometry-dependent behavior can be explained by a model…
We experimentally test the effects of tilting a turbulent Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection cell on the dynamics of the large-scale circulation (LSC) orientation $θ_0$. The probability distribution of $θ_0$ is measured, and used to obtain a tilt-induced potential acting on $θ_0$, which is used in a low-dimensional model of diffusion of $θ_0$ in a potential. The form of the potential is sinusoidal in $θ_0$, and linear in tilt angle for small tilt angles, which is explained by a simple geometric model of the vector direction of the mean buoyancy force acting on the LSC. However, the magnitude of the …
We present measurements of the orientation $θ_0$ and temperature amplitude $δ$ of the large-scale circulation in a cylindrical sample of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection (RBC) with aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 1.00$ ($D$ and $L$ are the diameter and height respectively) and for the Prandtl number $Pr \simeq 0.8$. Results for $θ_0$ revealed a preferred orientation with upflow in the West, consistent with a broken azimuthal invariance due to Earth's Coriolis force [see \cite{BA06b}]. They yielded the azimuthal diffusivity $D_θ$ and a corresponding Reynolds number $Re_θ$ for Rayleigh numbers o…
Previously we published a dynamical model (E. Brown and G. Ahlers, Phys. Fluids, 20, 075101 (2008)) for the large-scale-circulation (LSC) dynamics of Rayleigh-Benard convection in cylindrical containers. The model consists of a pair of stochastic ordinary differential equations, motivated by the Navier-Stokes equations, one each for the strength delta and the orientation theta_0 of the LSC. Here we extend it to cases where the rotational invariance of the system is broken by one of several physically relevant perturbations. As an example we present experimental measurements of the LSC dynamics…
Coherent large-scale circulations of turbulent thermal convection in air have been studied experimentally in a rectangular box heated from below and cooled from above using Particle Image Velocimetry. The hysteresis phenomenon in turbulent convection was found by varying the temperature difference between the bottom and the top walls of the chamber (the Rayleigh number was changed within the range of $10^7 - 10^8$). The hysteresis loop comprises the one-cell and two-cells flow patterns while the aspect ratio is kept constant ($A=2 - 2.23$). We found that the change of the sign of the degree of…
It is shown that the Truncated Euler Equations, i.e. a finite set of ordinary differential equations for the amplitude of the large-scale modes, can correctly describe the complex transitional dynamics that occur within the turbulent regime of a confined 2D Navier-Stokes flow with bottom friction and a spatially periodic forcing. In particular, the random reversals of the large scale circulation on the turbulent background involve bifurcations of the probability distribution function of the large-scale circulation velocity that are described by the related microcanonical distribution which dis…
We studied the properties of the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection by using results from direct numerical simulations in which we placed a large number of numerical probes close to the sidewall. The LSC orientation is determined by either a cosine or a polynomial fit to the azimuthal temperature or azimuthal vertical velocity profile measured with the probes. We study the LSC in Γ=D/L=1/2 and Γ=1 samples, where D is the diameter and L the height. For Pr=6.4 in an aspect ratio Γ=1 sample at $Ra=1\times10^8$ and $5\times10^8$ the obtained LSC orientation …
We investigate the application of artificial neural networks to stabilize proper orthogonal decomposition based reduced order models for quasi-stationary geophysical turbulent flows. An extreme learning machine concept is introduced for computing an eddy-viscosity closure dynamically to incorporate the effects of the truncated modes. We consider a four-gyre wind-driven ocean circulation problem as our prototype setting to assess the performance of the proposed data-driven approach. Our framework provides a significant reduction in computational time and effectively retains the dynamics of the …
The statistics of Lagrangian particles in turbulent flows is considered in the framework of a simple vortex model. Here, the turbulent velocity field is represented by a temporal sequence of Burgers vortices of different circulation, strain, and orientation. Based on suitable assumptions about the vortices' statistical properties, the statistics of the velocity increments is derived. In particular, the origin and nature of small-scale intermittency in this model is investigated both numerically and analytically.
The understanding of turbulent flows is one of the biggest current challenges in physics, as no first-principles theory exists to explain their observed spatio-temporal intermittency. Turbulent flows may be regarded as an intricate collection of mutually-interacting vortices. This picture becomes accurate in quantum turbulence, which is built on tangles of discrete vortex filaments. Here, we study the statistics of velocity circulation in quantum and classical turbulence. We show that, in quantum flows, Kolmogorov turbulence emerges from the correlation of vortex orientations, while deviations…
We test the ability of a low-dimensional turbulence model to predict how dynamics of large-scale coherent structures such as convection rolls change in different cell geometries. We performed Rayleigh-Bénard convection experiments in a cubic container, in which there is a single convection roll known as the large-scale circulation (LSC). The model describes the motion of the orientation $θ_0$ of the LSC as diffusion in a potential which is predicted as a function of the shape of the cell from an approximate solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. The model predicts advected oscillation modes…
We discuss the role of particular velocity field configurations -- instantons, for short -- which are supposed to dominate the flow during the occurrence of extreme turbulent circulation events. Instanton equations, devised for the stochastic hydrodynamic setup of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, are applied to the interpretation of direct numerical simulation results. We are able in this way to model the time evolution of extreme circulation events for a broad range of scales, through the combined use of eddy viscosity phenomenology and exact creeping instantons. While this approach work…
Numerical simulations of atmospheric circulation models are limited by their finite spatial resolution, and so large eddy simulation (LES) is the preferred approach to study these models. In LES a low-pass filter is applied to the flow field to separate the large and small scale motions. In implicitly filtered LES the computational mesh and discretization schemes are considered to be the low-pass filter while in the explicitly filtered LES approach the filtering procedure is separated from the grid and discretization operators and allows for better control of the numerical errors. The aim of t…
Dissipating of disorder quantum vortices in an annular two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate can form a macroscopic persistent flow of atoms. We propose a protocol to create persistent flow with high winding number based on a double concentric ring-shaped configuration. We find that a sudden geometric quench of the trap from single ring-shape into double concentric ring-shape will enhance the circulation flow in the outer ring-shaped region of the trap when the initial state of the condensate is with randomly distributed vortices of the same charge. The circulation flows that we created are…
We present results of the study of a turbulent air flow with a large scale circulation in Rayleigh-Benard rectangular convective cell with a heated bottom wall and a cooled top wall. The mean horizontal velocity of the main roll and the mean vorticity of eddy rings are almost aligned in a large part of the flow. The helicity of the mean flow is quite high, and is the source of turbulent helicity. Since helicity of the mean flow and turbulence is quite large, the flow in Rayleigh-Benard convective cell is well suited to study properties of helical turbulence.
We analyse the long-time evolution of the three-dimensional flow in a closed cubic turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell via a Koopman eigenfunction analysis. A data-driven basis derived from diffusion kernels known in machine learning is employed here to represent a regularized generator of the unitary Koopman group in the sense of a Galerkin approximation. The resulting Koopman eigenfunctions can be grouped into subsets in accordance with the discrete symmetries in a cubic box. In particular, a projection of the velocity field onto the first group of eigenfunctions reveals the four stabl…
The boundary layer flow in a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell of rectangular shape has been visualized in this fluid dynamics video. The experiment has been undertaken in air at a Rayleigh number $Ra=1.3\times 10^{10}$ and a Prandtl number $Pr=0.7$. Various sequences captured at selected positions of the heating plate show that the boundary layer is a very transient flow region characterized by coherent structures that permanently evolve. It becomes fully turbulent in the areas where the large-scale circulation impinge or leave the bottom plate.
An analytic, asymptotic approximation of the nonlinear steady-state equations for viscoelastic creeping flow, modeled by the Oldroyd-B equations with polymer stress diffusion, is derived. Near the extensional stagnation point the flow stretches and aligns polymers along the outgoing streamlines of the stagnation point resulting in a stress-island, or birefringent strand. The polymer stress diffusion coefficient is used, both, as an asymptotic parameter and a regularization parameter. The structure of the singular part of polymer stress tensor is a Gaussian aligned with the incoming streamline …
We studied experimentally the effect of turbulent thermal diffusion in a multi-fan turbulence generator which produces a nearly homogeneous and isotropic flow with a small mean velocity. Using Particle Image Velocimetry and Image Processing techniques we showed that in a turbulent flow with an imposed mean vertical temperature gradient (stably stratified flow) particles accumulate in the regions with the mean temperature minimum. These experiments detected the effect of turbulent thermal diffusion in a multi-fan turbulence generator for relatively high Reynolds numbers. The experimental result…
We study experimentally and theoretically transition phenomena caused by the external forcing from Rayleigh-Benard convection with the large-scale circulation (LSC) to the limiting regime of unstably stratified turbulent flow without LSC whereby the temperature field behaves like a passive scalar. In the experiments we use the Rayleigh-Bénard apparatus with an additional source of turbulence produced by two oscillating grids located nearby the side walls of the chamber. When the frequency of the grid oscillations is larger than 2 Hz, the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent convection is…
For rapidly rotating turbulent Rayleigh--Bénard convection in a slender cylindrical cell, experiments and direct numerical simulations reveal a boundary zonal flow (BZF) that replaces the classical large-scale circulation. The BZF is located near the vertical side wall and enables enhanced heat transport there. Although the azimuthal velocity of the BZF is cyclonic (in the rotating frame), the temperature is an anticyclonic traveling wave of mode one whose signature is a bimodal temperature distribution near the radial boundary. The BZF width is found to scale like $Ra^{1/4}Ek^{2/3}$ where the…
We study experimentally turbulent thermal diffusion of small particles in inhomogeneous and anisotropic stably stratified turbulence produced by one oscillating grid in the air flow. The velocity fields have been measured using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). We have determined various turbulence characteristics: the mean and turbulent velocities, two-point correlation functions of the velocity field and an integral scale of turbulence from the measured velocity fields. The temperature field have been measured with a temperature probe equipped with 12 E thermocouples. Spatial distributions…
Implementing multicomponent diffusion models in numerical combustion studies is computationally expensive; to reduce cost, numerical simulations commonly use mixture-averaged diffusion treatments or simpler models. However, the accuracy and appropriateness of mixture-averaged diffusion has not been verified for three-dimensional, turbulent, premixed flames. In this study we evaluated the role of multicomponent mass diffusion in premixed, three-dimensional high Karlovitz-number hydrogen, n-heptane, and toluene flames, representing a range of fuel Lewis numbers. We also studied a premixed, unsta…
