We studied experimentally the effect of turbulent thermal diffusion in a multi-fan turbulence generator which produces a nearly homogeneous and isotropic flow with a small mean velocity. Using Particle Image Velocimetry and Image Processing techniques we showed that in a turbulent flow with an imposed mean vertical temperature gradient (stably stratified flow) particles accumulate in the regions with the mean temperature minimum. These experiments detected the effect of turbulent thermal diffusion in a multi-fan turbulence generator for relatively high Reynolds numbers. The experimental results are in compliance with the results of the previous experimental studies of turbulent thermal diffusion in oscillating grids turbulence (Buchholz et al. 2004; Eidelman et al. 2004). We demonstrated that turbulent thermal diffusion is an universal phenomenon. It occurs independently of the method of turbulence generation, and the qualitative behavior of particle spatial distribution in these very different turbulent flows is similar. Competition between turbulent fluxes caused by turbulent thermal diffusion and turbulent diffusion determines the formation of particle inhomogeneities.
We present a numerical study of Rayleigh-Bénard convection disturbed by a longitudinal wind. Our results show that under the action of the wind, the vertical heat flux through the cell initially decreases, due to the mechanism of plumes-sweeping, and then increases again when turbulent forced convection dominates over the buoyancy. As a result, the Nusselt number is a non-monotonic function of the shear Reynolds number. We provide a simple model that captures with good accuracy all the dynamical regimes observed. We expect that our findings can lead the way to a more fundamental understanding …
We present two models for turbulent flows with periodic boundary conditions and with either rotation, or a magnetic field in the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) limit. One model, based on Lagrangian averaging, can be viewed as an invariant-preserving filter, whereas the other model, based on spectral closures, generalizes the concepts of eddy viscosity and eddy noise. These models, when used separately or in conjunction, may lead to substantial savings for modeling high Reynolds number flows when checked against high resolution direct numerical simulations (DNS), the examples given here being run o…
Rotating fans are the prevalent forced cooling method for heat generating equipment and buildings. As the concentration of atmospheric pollutants has increased, the accumulation of microscale and nanoscale particles on surfaces due to advection-diffusion has led to adverse mechanical, chemical and electrical effects that increase cooling demands and reduce the reliability of electronic equipment. Here, we uncover the mechanisms leading to enhanced deposition of particle matter (PM$_{10}$ and PM$_{2.5}$) on surfaces due to turbulent axial fan flows operating at Reynolds numbers, $Re \sim 10^5$.…

Large eddy simulations and three-dimensional proper orthogonal decomposition were used to study the interaction between a large stationary and moving bluff body and a high Reynolds number stably-stratified turbulent boundary layer. An immersed boundary method is utilized to take into account the effect of the bluff body on the boundary layer flow and turbulent inflow conditions upstream of the bluff body are imposed by employing a concurrent precursor simulation method both because a pseudo-spectral method is utilized in the horizontal directions. The dominant POD mode type was observed to occ…
(abridged) Context: Turbulent diffusion of large-scale flows and magnetic fields play major roles in many astrophysical systems. Aims: Our goal is to compute turbulent viscosity and magnetic diffusivity, relevant for diffusing large-scale flows and magnetic fields, respectively, and their ratio, the turbulent magnetic Prandtl number, ${\rm Pm}_{\rm t}$, for isotropically forced homogeneous turbulence. Methods: We use simulations of forced turbulence in fully periodic cubes composed of isothermal gas with an imposed large-scale sinusoidal shear flow. Turbulent viscosity is computed either from …
The effect of domain anisotropy on the inverse cascade occurring within the geostrophic turbulence regime of rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RRBC) is investigated. In periodic domains with square cross-section in the horizontal a domain-filling dipole state is present. For rectangular periodic domains a Kolmogorov-like flow consisting of a periodic array of alternating unidirectional jets with embedded vortices is observed, together with an underlying weak meandering transverse jet. Similar transitions occurring in weakly dissipative two-dimensional flows driven by externally impo…
The Variable Density and Speed of Sound Vessel (VDSSV) produces subsonic turbulent flows that are both compressible and observable at all scales with existing instrumentation including hot wires and particle tracking. We realize this objective by looking at the flow of a heavy gas (sulfur hexafluoride $SF_6$), with a speed of sound almost three times lower than for air. By switching between air and $SF_6$, we isolate the influence of the turbulent Mach number (up to $M_t$ = 0.17) on turbulence statistics from the influences of changes in the Reynolds number (up to $R_λ$ = 1600), and boundary c…
Direct numerical simulations are carried out to study flow structure and transport properties in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical cell of aspect ratio one with an imposed axial magnetic field. Flows at the Prandtl number 0.025 and the Rayleigh and Hartmann numbers up to $10^9$ and 1400 are considered. The results are consistent with those of earlier experimental and numerical data. As anticipated, the heat transfer rate and kinetic energy are suppressed by strong magnetic field. At the same time, their growth with the Rayleigh number is found to be faster in flows at high …
A semi-empirical acoustic model for self-noise was adapted to predict the sound radiated from an axial fan featuring rotating controlled diffusion blades (RCDB). Experimental data for wake velocity, mass flow rate across the fan, and fan rotational speed were obtained. These experimental data along with typical characteristics of turbulent boundary layers were used to predict the noise of the axial fan. Hot-wire wake measurements were made in the near region downstream of the fan plane. The fan noise was measured upstream of the fan. The experimentally obtained self-noise was then compared to …
We study experimentally temperature fluctuations in stably stratified forced turbulence in air flow. In the experiments with an imposed vertical temperature gradient, the turbulence is produced by two oscillating grids located nearby the side walls of the chamber. Particle Image Velocimetry is used to determine the turbulent and mean velocity fields, and a specially designed temperature probe with sensitive thermocouples is employed to measure the temperature field. We found that the ratio $\big[(\ell_x \nabla_x \bar{T})^2 + (\ell_y \nabla_y \bar{T})^2 + (\ell_z \nabla_z \bar{T})^2\big] / <θ^2…
With the increased application of large eddy simulation techniques, the generation of realistic turbulence at inflow boundaries is crucial for the accuracy of a simulation. The Control Forced Concurrent Precursor Method (CFCPM) proposed in this work combines an existing concurrent precursor method and a mean flow forcing method with a new extension of the controlled forcing method to impose turbulent inflow boundary conditions primarily, although not exclusively, for domains that require periodic boundary conditions. Turbulent inflow boundary conditions are imposed through a region of body for…
Due to large scale flow inhomogeneities and the effects of temperature, turbulence small-scale structure in thermal convection is still an active field of investigation, especially considering sophisticated Lagrangian statistics. Here we experimentally study Lagrangian pair dispersion (one of the canonical problems of Lagrangian turbulence) in a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell. A sufficiently high temperature difference is imposed on a horizontal layer of fluid to observe a turbulent flow. We perform Lagrangian tracking of sub-millimetric particles on a large measurement volume including part …
Closure models for the turbulent scalar flux are an important source of uncertainty in Reynolds-averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations of scalar transport. This paper presents an approach to quantify this uncertainty in simulations of complex engineering flows. The approach addresses the uncertainty in modeling the pressure scrambling (PS) effect, which is the primary mechanism balancing the productions in scalar flux dynamics. Inspired by the two classical phenomenological theories of return-to-isotropy (RI) and isotropization-of-production (IP), we assume that the most likely directions o…
Environmental pollutants are a source for reliability issues across data center and telecommunications equipment. A primary driver of this is the transport and deposition of particle matter (PM$_{2.5}$, PM$_{10}$) on printed circuit boards, electronic components and heat exchange surfaces. This process is enhanced by turbulent air flows generated from cooling fans. Particle pollutants can persist after contemporary filtering, highlighting the importance of elucidating particle transport mechanisms and utilising this information to design robust equipment. This study investigates particle trans…
In the current study, model expressions for fifth-order velocity moments obtained from the truncated Gram-Charlier series expansions model for a turbulent flow field probability density function are validated using data from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a planar turbulent flow in a strained channel. Simplicity of the model expressions, the lack of unknown coefficients, and their applicability to non-Gaussian turbulent flows make this approach attractive to use for closing turbulent models based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The study confirms validity of the model e…
Turbulent boundary layers over flat walls in the presence of a hill are frequently found in nature and industry. Some examples are the air flows over hills and desert dunes, but also water flows over aquatic dunes inside closed conduits. The perturbation of a two-dimensional boundary layer by a hill introduces new scales in the problem, changing the way in which velocities and stresses are distributed along the flow. When in the presence of sediment transport, the stress distribution along the hill is strongly related to bed instabilities. This paper presents an experimental study on the pertu…
The transport of sediments by a fluid flow is commonly found in nature and in industry. In nature, it is found in rivers, oceans, deserts, and other environments. In industry, it is found in petroleum pipelines conveying grains, in sewer systems, and in dredging lines, for example. This study investigates experimentally the transport of the grains of a granular bed sheared by a turbulent liquid flow. In our experiments, fully developed turbulent water flows were imposed over a flat granular bed of known granulometry. Under the tested conditions, the grains were transported as bed load, i.e., t…
Turbulent motions enhance the diffusion of large-scale flows and temperature gradients. Such diffusion is often parameterized by coefficients of turbulent viscosity ($ν_{\rm t}$) and turbulent thermal diffusivity ($χ_{\rm t}$) that are analogous to their microscopic counterparts. We compute the turbulent diffusion coefficients by imposing large-scale velocity and temperature gradients on a turbulent flow and measuring the response of the system. We also confirm our results using experiments where the imposed gradients are allowed to decay. To achieve this, we use weakly compressible three-dime…
Direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is carried out to investigate the interaction of a conical shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer developing over a flat plate at free-stream Mach number $M_\infty = 2.05$ and Reynolds number $Re_θ\approx 630$, based on the upstream boundary layer momentum thickness. The shock is generated by a circular cone with half opening angle $θ_c = 25^\circ$. As found in experiments, the wall pressure exhibits a distinctive N-wave signature, with a sharp peak right past the precursor shock generated at the cone apex, followed by an extended …
Three-dimensional laminar flow structures with mixing, chemical reaction, normal strain, and shear strain qualitatively representative of turbulent combustion at the small scales are analyzed. A mixing layer is subjected to counterflow in the transverse y- and z-directions. Both non-reactive and reactive flows are examined. Reduction of the three-dimensional boundary-layer equations to a one-dimensional similar form is obtained allowing for heat and mass diffusion with variations in density and properties. In steady configurations, a set of ODEs governs the three velocity components as well as…
In the presence of large-scale vortical motions and/or magnetic-field strains, the turbulent cross helicity (velocity--magnetic-field correlation in fluctuations) may contribute to the turbulent electromotive force and the Reynolds stress. These effects of cross helicity are considered to balance the primary effects of turbulence such as the turbulent magnetic diffusivity in magnetic-field evolution and the eddy viscosity in the momentum transport. The cross-helicity effects may suppress the enhanced transports due to turbulence. Physical interpretation of the effects is presented with special…
Studies in the literature on plane turbulent wall jets on flat surfaces, have invariably considered either the nozzle initial conditions or the asymptotic conditions far downstream, as scaling parameters for the streamwise variations of length and velocity scales. These choices, however, do not square with the notion of self similarity which is essentially a "local" concept. We first demonstrate that the streamwise variations of velocity and length scales in wall jets show remarkable scaling with local parameters i.e. there appear to be no imposed length and velocity scales. Next, it is shown …
The transport of solid particles by a fluid flow is frequently found in nature and industry. Some examples are the transport of sand in rivers and hydrocarbon pipelines. When the shear stresses exerted by a fluid flow on a granular bed remain moderate, some grains are set in motion without fluidizing the bed; the moving grains form a layer, known as bed load, that moves while maintaining contact with the fixed part of the bed. Under bed load conditions, the granular bed may become unstable, generating ripples and dunes. Sand ripples are commonly observed in closed conduits and pipes such as in…
The relevance of the vortex-gas model to the large scale dynamics of temporally evolving turbulent free shear layers in an inviscid incompressible fluid has recently been established by extensive numerical simulations (Suryanarayanan et al, Phys. Rev. E 89, 013009, 2014). Here, the effects of the velocity ratio across a spatially evolving 2D free shear layer are investigated by vortex-gas simulations, using a computational model based on Basu et al (1992, 1995), but with a crucial improvement that ensures conservation of global circulation. These are carried out for a range of values of the ve…
A Lagrangian fluctuation-dissipation relation has been derived in a previous work to describe the dissipation rate of advected scalars, both passive and active, in wall-bounded flows. We apply this relation here to develop a Lagrangian description of thermal dissipation in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a right-cylindrical cell of arbitrary cross-section, with either imposed temperature difference or imposed heat-flux at the top and bottom walls. We obtain an exact relation between the steady-state thermal dissipation rate and the time for passive tracer particles released at the top …
A shear flow of liquid metal (Galinstan) is driven in an annular channel by counter-rotating traveling magnetic fields imposed at the endcaps. When the traveling velocities are large, the flow is turbulent and its azimuthal component displays random reversals. Power spectra of the velocity field exhibit a $1/f^α$ power law on several decades and are related to power-law probability distributions $P(τ)\simτ^{-β}$ of the waiting times between successive reversals. This $1/f$ type spectrum is observed only when the Reynolds number is large enough. In addition, the exponents $α$ and $β$ are contro…
Turbulent boundary layers under adverse pressure gradients are studied using well-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) with the goal of assessing the influence of the streamwise pressure development. Near-equilibrium boundary layers were identified with the Clauser parameter $β$. The pressure gradient is imposed by prescribing the free-stream velocity. In order to fulfill the near-equilibrium conditions, the free-stream velocity has to follow a power-law distribution. The turbulence statistics pertaining to cases with a constant Clauser pressure-gradient parameter ? were compared with cases w…
Turbulent thermal diffusion is a combined effect of the temperature stratified turbulence and inertia of small particles. It causes the appearance of a non-diffusive turbulent flux of particles in the direction of the turbulent heat flux. This non-diffusive turbulent flux of particles is proportional to the product of the mean particle number density and the effective velocity of inertial particles. The theory of this effect has been previously developed only for small temperature gradients and small Stokes numbers (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 224, 1996). In this study a generalized theory of t…
Turbulent convection processes in nature are often found to be organized in a hierarchy of plume structures and flow patterns. The gradual aggregation of convection cells or granules to a supergranule which eventually fills the whole horizontal layer is reported and analysed in spectral element direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection at an aspect ratio of $60$. The formation proceeds over a time span of more than $10^4$ convective time units for the largest accessible Rayleigh number and occurs only when the turbulence is driven by a constant heat…
We present an experimental investigation of the dynamics and flow-coupling of convective turbulent flows in a cylindrical Rayleigh-Benard convection cell with two immiscible fluids, water and fluorinert FC-77 electronic liquid (FC77). It is found that one large-scale circulation (LSC) roll exists in each of the fluid layers, and that their circulation planes have two preferred azimuthal orientations separated by $\simπ$. A surprising finding of the study is that cessations/reversals of the LSC in FC77 of the two-layer system occur much more frequently than they do in single-layer turbulent RBC…
This article shows the importance of flow compressibility on the heat transfer in confined impinging jets, and how it is driven by both the Mach number and the wall heat-flux. Hence, we present a collection of cases at several Mach numbers with different heat-flux values applied at the impingement wall. The wall temperature scales linearly with the imposed heat-flux and the adiabatic wall temperature is found to be purely governed by the flow compression. Especially for high heat-flux values, the non-constant wall temperature induces considerable differences in the thermal conductivity of the …
Air cavities, i.e. air layers developed behind cavitators, are seen as a promising drag reducing method in the maritime industry. Here we utilize the Taylor-Couette (TC) geometry, i.e. the flow between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders, to study the effect of air cavities in this closed setup, which is well-accessible for drag measurements and optical flow visualizations. We show that stable air cavities can be formed, and that the cavity size increases with Reynolds number and void fraction. The streamwise cavity length strongly depends on the axial position due to buoyancy for…
We use direct numerical simulations to compute turbulent transport coefficients for passive scalars in turbulent rotating flows. Effective diffusion coefficients in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the rotations axis are obtained by studying the diffusion of an imposed initial profile for the passive scalar, and calculated by measuring the scalar average concentration and average spatial flux as a function of time. The Rossby and Schmidt numbers are varied to quantify their effect on the effective diffusion. It is find that rotation reduces scalar diffusivity in the perpendicular d…
This paper report on the design of an experiment to establish an experimental self-similar adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) flow at the verge of separation in order to characterise its statistical structure and the contribution of the Reynolds stresses to the wall shear stress via quadrant analysis decomposition in conjunction with the Renard & Deck (RD) decomposition of the mean skin friction. In this study high-spatial-resolution (HSR) two-component - two-dimensional (2C-2D) particle image velocimetry (PIV) is employed to measure the self-similar APG-TBL flow. T…

We examine the structure of the turbulence boundary of a temporal plane jet at $Re=5000$ using statistics conditioned on the enstrophy. The data is obtained by direct numerical simulation and threshold values span 24 orders of magnitude, ranging from essentially irrotational fluid outside the jet to fully turbulent fluid in the jet core. We use two independent estimators for the local entrainment velocity $v_n$ based on the enstrophy budget. The data show clear evidence for the existence of a viscous superlayer (VSL) that envelopes the turbulence. The VSL is a nearly one-dimensional layer with…
Liquid metals play a central role in new generation liquid metal cooled nuclear reactors, for which numerical investigations require the use of appropriate thermal turbulence models for low Prandtl number fluids. Given the limitations of traditional modelling approaches and the increasing availability of high-fidelity data for this class of fluids, we propose a Machine Learning strategy for the modelling of the turbulent heat flux. A comprehensive algebraic mathematical structure is derived and physical constraints are imposed to ensure attractive properties promoting applicability, robustness…
This paper presents an experimental study on the transition from smooth to rough walls, and back to the smooth one, in turbulent closed-conduit flows. These transitions cause a shift on flow velocity profiles that changes their parameters when compared to the flow over a smooth wall. Different water flow rates were imposed in a closed conduit of rectangular cross section, where rough elements consisting of cavities of d- and k-type were positioned covering a part of the bottom wall of the test section. Reynolds numbers based on the channel half-height were moderate, varying between 7800 and 96…
An oscillating spanwise pressure gradient is imposed numerically to control the flow separation and reduce the drag of a turbulent flow in a channel with square bars. The transverse flow produces a maximum drag reduction of 25\%, due to lower pressure and skin-friction drag forces. The pressure drag reduction reaches a maximum of 22\% and is due to a decrease of the positive high pressure in front of the bars and an increase of the low negative pressure behind the bars. The skin-friction drag reduction is caused by a lower wall-shear stress along the cavity between the bars where the flow is f…
